Union Bank FC wins Metro Pro League title

Union Bank Football Club of Lagos have been crowned as the winners of the inaugural edition of the Metro Pro League.

The Ayo Filani-led Bankers defeated their Remo Stars counterparts 2-1 at the Agege Stadium, yesterday, to finish on 38 points after 18 Weeks of hostilities.

Bridge FC and Apapa Golden Stars were placed second and third with 32 and 30 points respectively.

Meanwhile, Union Bank’s prolific midfielder, Oghenovo Uzezi won for himself the Metro Pro League’ Players Award for the Month of May.

Uzezi’s brilliant display in May accounted largely for Union Bank FC’s winning the Metro Pro League title.

In a chat with the media men after the trophy presentation to the winners, the Metro Pro League, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Victor Akinyooye congratulated Union Bank FC for winning the title, just as he assured that the standard of the league will be sustained in the new season.

“Let me use this opportunity to commend Union Bank Football Club and other clubs for putting up a great display in the inaugural edition of the Metro Pro League. We hope the Champions will be given a great fight in the new season,” he concluded.

Metro Pro League Ends June 9th 2014

Metro pro league week 18 fixtures will also mark the end of the inaugural season of this Private initiative.

The League Kicked off on Wednesday the 19th of February 2014 at Agege Stadium, Agege, Lagos with a match between Bridge FC and 36 Lion FC both of Lagos amidst some fanfare.

Week in Week out as seen the above named teams alongside teams like Union Bank, Remo Stars of Shagamu, Yobo FC, Collin Edwin Sports Club, Apapa Golden Stars, Nath Boys FC, AS Racine FC and Bolowotan FC, all battle it out for who would carry the crown.

Speaking to Pressmen before the kick off of the Tournament in february Chief Executive Officer of Metro Pro League Victor Akinyooye said “The idea of Metro Pro League is to administer football in Lagos state by international standards as it is being done in developed nations.

“Ten privately owned -clubs have come together to establish the Metro Pro League, matches will be played in four venues across Lagos State He said.

And this has been the case, but there is always room for improvement.

speaking to our reporter via telephone General Manager AS Racine Mr Mojeed Adegbidin said “We must state that its been an interesting first season and we already looking forward to the next season.

Also Lending his voice to this project is Keye Onadeko General Manager Union Bank FC, whose team has opened an unassailable 7 point lead and are actually “champions in waiting”

Onadeko said the Metro Pro League is a League that as come to stay, while also using the opportunity to call on Corporate bodies to come onboard Metro Pro League train as opportunities for Branding are abound.

Incidentally the last game of the Season will be Remo Stars FC v Union Bank FC at the Agege Stadium, Kick off time is 4 o’clock and presentation of trophies will take place immediately after.

Union Bank Football Club of Lagos are in pole position to take over the mantle of leadership of the Metro Pro League with an outright win over their Nath Boys counterparts in a Week 12 tie of the league.

The mouth-watering clash is billed to hold at the Onikan Stadium on Wednesday at 4pm. With an outright win over Nath Boys FC, the Bankers will go past Remo Stars who are currently topping the table with 20 points.

Expectedly, Nath Boys who were knocked out of the Lagos State FA Cup quarterfinal on Monday will also give the homers a run for their money in order to improve their current standing on the log. They are the highest scoring team in the league with 25 goals to their credit and have conceded 19 goals since the commencement of the Metro Pro League.

Top class performers, Apapa Golden Stars will slug it out with Yobo FC at Teslim Balogun Stadium, just as Remo Stars will also attempt to compound the woes of Collins Edwin Sports Club at the Agege Stadium on Thursday. Both games kick off at 4pm.

In Saturday’s early kick off games, AS Racine FC will have their hands full against Bridge Football Club at Agege Stadium while 36 Lion FC will try Bolowotan FC for size at the Onikan Stadium. Both games kick off at 9am.

Meanwhile, the Metro Pro League management has offered to reward the 500th ‘Like’ on the official Metro Pro League Facebook page and the 100th follower on the official Twitter handle @metroproleague with N1,500 worth of airtime each.

The League management led by Chief Executive Officer Victor Akinyooye, would like to thank everyone for the continued support and feedback from the social media. Metro Pro League: AS Racine’s Lasisi wins Player of the Month award

AS Racine’s frontman, Gafar Adekunle Lasisi has been named as Metro Pro League’ player of the month in March.

The younglad, Lasisi, earned himself this honour as his outstanding displays caught the attention of the Metro Pro League management and fans alike to be adjudged the best player in the ten-team league in the month of March.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the Agege Township Stadium on Thursday, the Metro Pro League, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Victor Akinyooye said the idea to honour outstanding players on a monthly basis is to recognize, encourage, reward hard work, performance and results on the pitch.

He then assured that honours shall be bestowed on the most outstanding player of every month.

Lasisi, born on 19th of August 1996 is the last born of a family of seven siblings. He hails from Aiyetoro in Ogun State. The 177cm right footed center forward weighs 70kg and wears jersey number 9 for his club.

The talented player started playing football at a tender age and developed a keen interest in primary school. He honed his skills at Mageeco Football Academy in Agege before joining AS Racine FC.

Lasisi banged in 5 goals in as many matches in the month of March enoug to earn him the first ever Metro Pro League Player of the Month Award.
