The former FIA president Max Mosley believes the crash Fernando Alonso suffered in Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix would have killed the driver had it happened 20 years ago.
Alonso’s McLaren clipped the Haas car driven by Esteban Gutiérrez while travelling at close to 200mph, crashed into a trackside wall at Albert Park and barrel-rolled twice before Alonso crawled out of the wreckage.
Mosley’s time as head of motor sport’s governing body saw a push for increased safety measures, with the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994 helping to inspire that movement.
Frenchman Jules Bianchi also died from accidents suffered in a crash at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix but this time around,
Mosley could afford to refer to Alonso’s crash as “impressive” as he paid tribute to the efforts of his former FIA chief medical officer Sid Watkins.
“You wouldn’t know for sure without a detailed analysis but generally speaking those sorts of accidents resulted in serious injury or death,” said Mosely.
“Happily that seems to have stopped. There are still freak accidents, like Jules, but those sort of serious racing accidents, you do expect the driver to walk away. That wouldn’t have been the case 20 years ago. This was thanks to Sid Watkins and a team of really competent people and the teams themselves. It needed to be looked at scientifically and that was the big change after Ayrton Senna’s death at Imola in 1994.”

Formula 1 bosses have agreed to drop the controversial new elimination qualifying system for the next race.
The previous system will be re-introduced for the Bahrain Grand Prix from 1-3 April after criticism of the new knock-out format at the season’s first race in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday.
The teams made a unanimous decision at a meeting in Melbourne on Sunday.
“We wanted to improve the show and we went in the wrong direction,” Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said. “It shows there is common sense in F1.”
The decision to change qualifying was initiated by F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone.
The 85-year-old voted in favour of the new system, although he had wanted to introduce a more radical approach that would see the fastest drivers after qualifying demoted on the grid to try to promote closer racing.
But Wolff said that Ecclestone would fall in line with the teams’ decision.
“He agreed to it,” Wolff said. “I spoke to him and he sees it was the wrong decision. You can’t blame anybody because we really tried to optimize the show and we got it wrong. I am not quite sure he is happy to go back to the old
format because he’d like to shake things up, understandably. But it is better to go back to the old format rather than staying with what we’ve invented yesterday.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: “It was done with the best intentions, to try to shuffle the grid around and create more excitement and to help the promoters. and unfortunately that didn’t happen. We gave it a go. The responsible thing has happened, the teams collectively have agreed it didn’t work and to go back with immediate effect.”
Wolff said it was likely changes to the format of grand prix weekends would be discussed again ahead of the 2017 season.
“We shouldn’t wipe it completely off the table that there isn’t a more attractive format,” he said, “but it needs consideration and structure so this will not happen during 2016. And over the winter we will revisit it.
“There is for sure ways of optimising qualifying and maybe even the race. But what we need is to properly assess what is right and wrong and not have erratic decision making. I think we should have more tyres and we should let them drive flat out, provide a great show, make it less complicated, the fastest man is on pole. That’s what counts.”

Mercedes Benz’s British Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton has kicked against plans to introduce heavier cars in 2017. The FIA on Wednesday published a list of proposed changes to the bodywork of cars with bigger tyres which will bring the weight of the car from 702kg to 722kg.
The FIA plans to make the cars, wider, louder and faster in its bid to livening up the sport, But the Formula one champion believes that the drivers should have been consulted also.
“I think the drivers should be consulted more. We have a feeling in the car and what could be made better. We do know what does not feel good and what to improve,” he said.
The 3 time F1 Champion believes that rather than make the cars heavier they should be made lighter for more speed.

A £13million loss of sponsorship and a not so good season meant the team also missed out on prize money and it now put has put the Mclaren Group who earlier on in the year changed its name to Maclaren Technology Group in the red.
The Future However seems bright for the Group with one of its subsidiaries Mclaren Automotive set to launch a sports series model that is bound to be a sell-out.
