38 Youth Olympic Games Players Line up at World Junior Championships

The most important international junior table tennis event of the year, the Wisdom 2014 World Junior Table Tennis Championships, has kicked off today in Shanghai, China.

The prestigious event, sees 192 players from 41 countries battle for the 7 gold medals on offer: boy’s and girl’s team, boy’s and girl’s singles, boy’s and girl’s doubles, and mixed doubles over the next 8 days.

For 38 of these players, high-level competition is no stranger for them, as they competed in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games earlier in the year just down the road in Nanjing, China.

Within these 38 players, are five out of the six singles medalists, with only the men’s singles Champion FAN Zhendong (CHN) missing from the stellar field of under 18 year olds.

18 year old Lily ZHANG (USA), who created history at the Youth Olympic Games by winning bronze, which was the first ever table tennis (Youth) Olympic medal for a North American country will be playing in her last ever junior event here in Shanghai.

ZHANG, who was one of the stars in the recently released Top Spin documentary stated:

“Winning a medal in Nanjing was my goal and my dream, and achieving it has given me a lot of confidence and allowed me to set higher goals for myself in the future.”

“One of these goals is to win a medal in both the teams and singles events here, which I believe I have a good chance. I just need to fight, and have a bit of luck and hopefully I will be making more history, by winning the first World Junior Championships medal for a North American country.”

The gold and silver medalists at the Youth Olympic Games, LIU Gaoyang (CHN) and DOO Hoi Kem (HKG), will again be the favorites in the girl’s singles to add more medals to their 2014 collection next Sunday.

The silver medalist in Nanjing, defender Yuto MURAMATSU (JPN) has had a stellar year, and not just at the ITTF Junior events. The 18 year old has also had some breakthrough results on the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour, and has qualified for the US$1,000,000 grand finals to be held in Bangkok, Thailand on 11-14 December 2014.

KIM Minhyeok (KOR) will be hoping to follow in 2013 boys singles champion JANG Woojin (KOR) and become Korea’s third World Junior Champion. Hugo CALDERANO (BRA) will be pushing both MURAMATSU and KIM to the limit in his quest to become the first World Junior Champion from Latin America.

NEC WHEELCHAIR TENNIS MASTERS, LONDON, GREAT BRITAIN RESULTS – 30 NOVEMBER 2014

Shingo Kunieda won the men’s title, and Aniek van Koot the women’s title at the 2014 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London on Sunday 30 November. Eight men, eight women and four quad players competed in the ITF’s year-end wheelchair tennis event on 26-30 November.

The NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters was initiated in 1994 to honour the top players who have shown dedication and professionalism to the sport, and forms the climax to the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, that consists of over 160 events in more than 40 countries. In the men’s and women’s events, eight players compete in two round-robin groups, with the top two players in each group reaching the semifinals. In the quad event, four players compete in one round-robin group, with the top two players contesting the final.

FEI World Cup™ Driving: Sensational Start Of Season For Koos De Ronde

Dutch driver Koos de Ronde won his first FEI World Cup™ Driving qualifier of the season in Budapest (HUN) today. Thanks to his wonderful fast and clear round, De Ronde put fellow countryman IJsbrand Chardon, who was just under two seconds ahead of him, under pressure. Chardon recorded the fastest time in the Laszlo Papp Arena, but had two knockdowns and finished second, ahead of home driver József Dobrovitz.

New team

De Ronde started in Budapest for the first time with his new four-in-hand and put his foot down straight away. The FEI World Cup™ Driving 2013 champion used to drive his father’s team of piebald geldings but as the horses were getting older, he attempted to gradually renew his four-in-hand during the previous seasons. De Ronde was not pleased with the changes and at the end of last season he decided to go for a completely new team of indoor horses. His leader horses Joep and Kasper were previously part of fellow Dutch driver Theo Timmerman’s indoor team. The new wheeler Sarasko was formerly owned by US driver Misdee Wrigley-Miller who used him in her horse pair. His other wheeler Celina has been part of De Ronde’s indoor team since 2013.

De Ronde’s team went through the course built by Hungarian world championship course designer Gábor Fintha in a confident way. The course proved challenging and turned out to be more difficult than it had initially appeared. It included technical parts along with fast lines and mistakes were made in different places. The spectacular fireworks that went off as the drivers crossed the bridge gave an extra dimension to the competition.

The member of the gold-winning Dutch team at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy had one knockdown in the first round, but kept clear in the very fast Winning Round which took place over a shortened course. This is the first time that Koos de Ronde has won the FEI World Cup™ Driving competition in Budapest.

Risky business

IJsbrand Chardon was last to go in the Winning Round and used one different wheeler horse in comparison to last week’s competition in Stuttgart (GER). Chardon knew that De Ronde had driven a fast and clear round and that he only held a 1.82-second advantage over his teammate. Unfortunately, the lack of experience of his wheeler horse caused one knockdown at the start of the course. Chardon decided to take more risks and went even faster. A second ball fell which caused him to drop to second place.

Home driver

For József Dobrovitz Budapest is always a very special show as he lives only 20 km away in Vecsés, where he organises a four-star international outdoor driving event each year. In Stuttgart he felt his horses were too strong, so he changed one leader horse and one wheeler horse. His left leader Kinzhal is an Orlov trotter, which he also uses outdoors in the marathon and cones. His other leader Alex was previously owned by Jozsef Bozsik (HUN) and has been at Dobrovitz’s horse farm since April. Dobrovitz performed two good rounds in front of his home crowd, but a knockdown in each round prevented him from winning. Dobrovitz, whose father Dobrovitz Sr was honoured in the arena in Budapest for his 75th birthday and his contribution to the carriage driving sport, finished in third place.

Wildcards

German driver Georg von Stein was pleased with his fourth place. The reigning national champion competed on home ground in Stuttgart with a wildcard where he finished in fifth place. His team, with two Lipizzaner geldings in the lead, remained unchanged and led him to fourth place in Budapest today.

Wildcard driver József Dobrovitz Jr used two new horses in his team and realised how difficult it was to take part in indoor competitions with an inexperienced team. ‘Joci’ was nevertheless pleased with his wild card and with his fifth place.

The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 marathon winner Christoph Sandmann (GER) changed one leader horse after the first competition in Budapest, but lacked the necessary speed for a high placing and finished sixth.

Second wildcard driver, Dobrovitz’s cousin Márk Ozstertág (HUN), completed the family’s dominance in Budapest and finished seventh. Mark and his brother Krisztóf, who was navigating for his uncle József Dobrovitz, both drove a six-in-hand during an impressive demonstration alongside Dobrovitz and Dobrovitz Jr.

Koos de Ronde (NED): “It takes some time to get the settings right for my new team. I made changes to the bits of my leader horses and they were fantastic in the arena. I knew that I could not afford a bad placing because I only have three competitions, so I did a steady first round and went for it in the second round. I also realise that you sometimes also need a bit of luck. It is a big thrill to make it to the Winning Round and I am very happy that I won.”

Ijsbrand Chardon (NED): “I liked the course a lot, Fintha is the best course designer in my opinion. I always compete to win and if you want to win, you sometimes have to take risks. I had the same split times as Koos and my team is very fast in the obstacles, but when the first ball fell I had to take more risks and this did not turn out well for me.”

József Dobrovitz (HUN): “My wheeler horses are both very experienced. The feeling on the first night was much better than in Stuttgart, I could turn them any way I wanted. For this team, it doesn’t matter if the course is technical or fast, they do well in both. I did not have a specific tactics for the World Cup competition, I just tried to drive fast and clear. Unfortunately I made a mistake but I am nevertheless happy with my third place.”

2nd CAVB Beach VB Continental Cup – Dates And Organizers Announced

CAVB

The African Volleyball confederation “CAVB” announced the dates and organizers of the second edition of the CAVB Continental Cup due to start on December 4, 2014, when Mozambique and Namibia host the first pool stages of the Sub Zonal phase.

In the competition phase 1 (Sub- Zonal), the Continental countries will be divided into 12 pools covering all the continental 7 zones, where Zones 1 and 7 will have one pools , while the other zones 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will have 2 preliminary pools.

The Sub-Zonal phase will within the period between December 2014 and March 2015 and the qualifiers will proceed to the zonal phase of the 2016 Olympic Games qualification.

The winner of the CAVB Continental Cup will earn a direct ticket to the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016.

The Medal Race places in the ten Olympic and open kiteboarding events were decided at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates after a tense day of competition.

The top ten in each fleet will advance to the Medal Race in a do or die battle for ISAF Sailing World Cup Final glory and a share of the $200,000 prize fund.

It was another beautiful day in Abu Dhabi with clear blue skies, a north westerly breeze at 10-13 knots with the Emirati waters filled with the sails of 270 sailors from 38 nations.

Nestle Milo Schools Basketball Championship-Fiba Africa Zone 3 Targets Outstanding Players

As the stage is being set for the finals of the Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championships in Lagos, FIBA Africa Zone 3 the Basketball body controlling the zone sees the championship as a good platform for Nigeria’s budding talents to hit stardom.

The Administrative Secretary of FIBA Africa Zone 3 Joe Apu stated that the Nestle Milo Basketball Championships for Secondary Schools remains Nigeria’s flagship event for talent identification. “Some products of the Nestle Milo Championships have done the nation proud at international competitions’’. He recalled names like Mohammed Bukar now based in the United States and Canada based Edwin Jerry who were products of the championship.

Other national team players like Olumide Oyedeji, Anyebe Ujo and Nkechi Akashiele and others also had their foundation in the Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championships.

The FIBA Zone 3 Scribe, Joe Apu commends the Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball programme as very outstanding in the zone which has Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger and Liberia.

The qualifying teams will arrive in Lagos on the 1st of December 2014. The players’ accreditation starts on Tuesday 9am at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium Lagos while the championship starts with the Round Robin games at 1 o’clock in the afternoon.

LBA announces 2014 nominees

The League Bloggers Awards (LBA), on Friday, released the shortlists for its 2014 end-of-the-season award for the just-concluded Glo Premier League campaign.

The nominees are vying for awards in 16 categories including the highest goalscorer award, which will go to Enyimba striker, Mfon Udoh.

However, top among the categories is the Player of the Season. The quartet of Peter Ebimobowei of Bayelsa United, Mfon Udoh of Enyimba, Emem Eduok of Dolphins and Kingsley Bobby Sokari of Enyimba are the nominees in that category.

There is also the category for Manager of the Season. Four coaches, Paul Aigbogun of Warri Wolves, Ladan Bosso of Abia Warriors, Okey Emordi of Kano Pillars and last season’s winner, Mohammed Baba Ganaru,
now with Nasarawa United, will vie for the Manager award.

Other categories include Fair Play Award, Best Use of Social Media (for clubs), Best Website, Best Designed Jersey, Best New Goalkeeper (NPFL), Best Draft from Development Team, Best Development Team, Best New Player, Best Goalkeeper, Best Foreigner, Best Promoted Team and Best National Team Player.

LBA Business Manager, China Acheru, explained that the organisation consulted independent persons, journalists, players and coaches as well as administrators in reaching the list of final nominees.

“It was a process where we had to talk to players and coaches personally and sample who and who they believe deserved to be on the shortlist. Of course, these are the major actors in the league and we
got divert views. We also had to talk to some of journalists with vast knowledge and experience in covering the league and a handful of administrators before on the nominees.

“After the process we also had to look at performances and disciplinary records of players, coaches and clubs during the season to arrive at our final shortlist,” Acheru said.

The 2014 LBA will take place at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Lagos on December 15.

2014 Davis Cup By BNP Paribas By The Numbers

A total of 566 players from 122 nations contested the 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas in another memorable year for the competition. Switzerland, led by Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, became only the 14th nation to win the 115-year-old event after defeating France 3-1 in the Final in Lille on 21-23 November.

The Final attracted a record number of spectators for an officially-sanctioned tennis event with a crowd of 27,448 on Sunday in Lille. This brought the total attendance for Davis Cup in 2014 to 600,000 spectators.

Davis Cup was played in 58 countries in 2014, with a total of 82 home-and-away ties and seven group events held in the World Group and three regional zones: Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe/Africa.

It was another successful year for Davis Cup on television, with the Final shown by 41 broadcasters in 158 territories. The Swiss broadcaster SRG saw market shares of over 50 per cent on its three television channels, while France Television recorded a 25 per cent market share on Saturday. Throughout 2014, a total of 76 broadcasters showed Davis Cup in 168 territories.

The Davis Cup websites in English and Spanish have shown a 30 per cent growth in 2014, with 6.8 million visits, 3.5 million unique visitors and over 30 million page views achieved by the end of the Final. The 2014 Final saw a record website audience with almost 1.4 million visitor sessions. The competition’s social media properties in English, Spanish and Chinese have seen a 90 per cent increase in users this year, with 180,000 Twitter followers and 300,000 Facebook likes.

A key factor in the success of Davis Cup in 2014 has been the launch of Show Your Colours, a new fan-focused campaign to promote Davis Cup and Fed Cup as the world cups of tennis, and already used by over 60 nations globally. Building on the unique team nature of both competitions, Show Your Colours uses branding elements for promotion, in-stadium activities and all of the ITF’s website and social media activity.

Mixed Fortunes For Nigeria At CAR Rugby 7’s Tournament

At the end of day 1 of proceedings at the championship, Nigeria played 4 games in the group widely referred to by many as ” the group of death” recording one win and 3 losses against african rugby’s power houses.

The Black Stallions battled hard against Zimbabwe despite the massive support enjoyed by the home team.

The Fabian Juries tutored lads fought hard but were so unlucky as they lost by 19 to 26 against the host nation. This was the Nigerian Team’s first match experience after 2 weeks of intense camping, the team led by Azeez Ladipo caused an upset as they romped to a 28-0 win over Ivory Coast in the second game despite many observers and keen followers not giving the Nigerian team a chance.

After expending so much energy in the 2nd game, the team fell to Kenya by 38points, then later suffered another 49points loss to Namibia.

Speaking after the end of day one of the tournament, Technical Adviser of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, Dele Coker said “it is encouraging to see the home based players compete well against top African Nations which justifies the federation’s resolve to stick with home grown players and give them the necessary exposure.

“He further affirmed that there is hope for rugby in Nigeria as the home based players proved that if well groomed and nurtured they can be a force to reckon with in Africa and beyond, despite the limited time to train coupled with limited international experience as the team exhibited true courage and understanding of the game.

The competition enters day 2 today as Nigeria will face Uganda in the last match of pool A, the outcome of which will determine if Nigeria will compete for the plate or bowl.

ISAF SAILING WORLD CUP FINAL, ABU DHABI – DAY 2 VIDEO ALERT

The leaderboards across the ten Olympic and open kiteboarding event at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi, UAE are shaping up ahead of the penultimate day of racing.

A lighter breeze in the region of 9-12 knots with gusts up to 13 knots made for an intriguing day of racing in the Emirati capital. At the midway stage of the regatta there is minimal separation of the top racers. The level has been raised and every competitor is aiming to put in their best display as they bid to for glory and a share of the USD $200,000 prize fund.

LLTC launches Youth Tennis Foundation

The Lagos Lawn Tennis Club(LLTC) will host its Annual Gala Night tonight at the club house with a Business Lecture and a fund-raising for a proposed Youth Tennis Foundation to kick start the celebration.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Barr. Rotimi Edu, stated that the Breakfast Business Lecture will be delivered by the Managing Dirsctor of First Bank, Mr Bisi Onasanya, today.

The Lecture according to Edu doubles as the flag-off of the launch at the fund-raising for the LLTC Youth Tennis Academy which will produce future tennis stars for the club and country.

Expected to grace the occasion is the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, while the Royal Father of the day is the Olugbo of Ugboland, Ondo State, Oba (Dr.) Federick Obateru Akinruntan.
