Brazil And Britain Deliver Perfect Olympic Preview With Hat-Trick Of Golds Apiece As Rio 2016 Tester Draws To A Close

Brazil’s boxing fans were given a mouthwatering preview of next year’s Olympic boxing competition as the finals of the Rio 2016 test event played out on Sunday afternoon in Barra da Tijuca. And it was the home boxers who stole the limelight, with three of the six Brazilian finalists winning gold.

“I’m very confident that boxing will be one of the most exciting sports to follow in August 2016 for the enjoyment of fans from all over the world”, said AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu after the tournament. “It will no doubt be one of the most spectacular Olympic Games of all time and we look forward to welcoming the spectators to Rio.”

The Olympic venue was put through its paces with ten men’s and three women’s finals, and fittingly it was Brazil’s Robson Conceição who first lit up the crowd with an inspired victory over Uzbekistan’s APB champion Hurshid Tojbaev to take the men’s lightweight gold in the day’s first bout.

His team-mate Joedison Teixeira also managed to produce a winning performance as he swept aside Britain’s Samuel Maxwell. The Brazilian duo will be hoping that their strong form will take them all the way to next year’s Olympics, where gold would make them household names.

“We are delighted to have been able to deliver the Aquece Rio Boxing Test Event on time, which demonstrates the capacity and readiness of Rio for the upcoming Olympic Games this summer”, said Breno Pontes, Boxing Competition Manager for Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as the event drew to a close.

British boxers featured in five finals, two of them in the women’s competition. Chanetelle Cameron succeeded where compatriot Lisa Whiteside could not, bringing home lightweight gold against French star Estelle Mossely.

Japan’s Ryomei Tanaka and Uzbek hero Hasanboy Dusmatov both defeated Brazilian opponents to claim flyweight and light flyweight gold respectively, but any disappointment soon evaporated as Chatchai Butdee and Murodjon Akhmadaliev conspired to deliver the bout of the day. Uzbekistan’s Akhmadaliev emerged the deserving victor, taking a hard-earned bantamweight gold.

That contest was nearly matched by the last final of the day as German super heavyweight Erik Pfeifer took gold against Frazer Clarke, sealing a superb day’s boxing in fitting style.

“I would like to thank the Rio 2016 Organising Committee on delivering an excellent Aquece Rio Test Event. Our athletes, officials and National Federations worked very closely with Rio 2016 Organising Committee and we had a chance to test the key components of how our boxing competition is going to run”, said AIBA Sports Director Kristin Brynildsen.

Boxers From Brazil Delight Home Fans On Route To Rio 2016 Test Event Finals

The semi-finals of the Rio 2016 test event offered a mouthwatering taste of what is to come at next August’s Olympic Games, with some of the world’s best boxers lighting up RioCentro’s Pavilion 4 in Barra da Tijuca.

There was plenty for the home fans to cheer as Brazil’s rising star Robson Conceição won a tight match against Britain’s Luke McCormack, setting up a final against Uzbek lightweight Hurshid Tojibaev. Fellow Brazilian Joedison Teixeira also progressed after seeing off the challenge of Thailand’s Wuttichai Masuk, and he will now face Britain’s Sam Maxwell in Sunday’s light welterweight final.

Brazil’s former AMBC American Confederation Champion Juliao Henriques Neto also rose to the occasion, defeating Morocco’s Achraf Kharroubi in their flyweight semi-final. Japan’s newly crowned National Champion Ryomei Tanaka now stands between him and the gold medal, while in the bantamweight semi, Thailand’s AIBA Worlds bronze medalist Chatchai Butdee went through by beating Japan’s 19-year-old Arashi Morisaka.

Uzbekistan’s WSB star Hasanboy Dusmatov defeated Shyam Kumar Kakara in their light flyweight semi-final and will now meet Brazil’s latest APB hope Patrick Lourenco.

“The Rio test event is very competitive but after my WSB season and main AIBA Boxing events I feel I can win the gold medal here in Brazil. It is great that our International Federation has staged this competition in Rio and to be able to acclimatise for next year’s competition,” said Dusmatov.

Doha 2015 finalist Murodjon Akhmadaliev had to be in top form to see off Carlos Andre Rocha, and Morocco’s defending AIBA World Champion Mohammed Rabii just did enough to scrape through against Mexico’s Juan Pablo Romero.

Netherlands’ EUBC silver medalist Peter Mullenberg’s stamina and spirit saw him through a tough encounter with crowd favourite Michel Borges to reach the light heavyweight final where he will face Britain’s Joshua Buatsi.

“It was a really close fight today against the young Brazilian boxer and I probably fought too much from my heart, but I knew I had to work hard to beat Borges in his home ring,” said Mullenberg after his semi-final.

Germany’s APB star Erik Pfeifer eliminated Brazilian veteran Rafael Duarte Lima in their super heavyweight semi, and he will be confident going in to a tough final against another Brit, Frazer Clarke.

In the women’s competition, India’s five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Mary Kom couldn’t overcome a spirited Virginia Fuchs. The American now goes on to face Great Britain’s AIBA Worlds silver medalist Lisa Whiteside after she defeated Brazil’s Grazieli Jesus De Souza in Saturday’s second flyweight semi-final.

Chantelle Cameron was too strong for another home favourite, three-time AMBC American Confederation Women’s Champion Taynna Cardoso, and will meet French rival Estelle Mossely in the lightweight final. Brazil’s Flavia Figueiredo found success against Australia’s 2014 Youth Olympic Games bronze medalist Caitlin Parker, however, and she faces Khadija Mardi in Sunday’s hotly anticipated middleweight gold-medal match.

Big Names Dominate The Opening Day Of Rio 2016 Boxing Test Event

Pavilion 4 at the RioCentro complex of Olympic venues in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, hosted the opening day of boxing action at the Rio 2016 boxing Test Event yesterday, offering a glimpse of the talent set to perform on sport’s biggest stage next year.

The Great Britain team had a successful day, with AIBA Women’s World silver medalist Lisa Whiteside leading the way after edging through against Morocco’s Zohra Ez-Zahraoui in their flyweight bout.

“I really enjoyed getting in there today and it was a fantastic experience. She was an awkward opponent so I had to keep my shots straight and my guard tight and I finished strongly with a good last round. I look forward to boxing in the semi-finals tomorrow and am fit and ready to go,” said the experienced British boxer afterwards, who will be joined by team-mate Chantelle Cameron in the next round.

India’s five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Mary Kom was too strong for Venezuela’s former AMBC American Women’s Champion Karlha Magliocco and advanced to the semi-finals of the flyweight along with Estelle Mossely of France, after the lightweight defeated Mexico’s AMBC American Women’s Champion Victoria Torres.

In the men’s competition, Morocco’s current AIBA World Champion and WSB star Mohammed Rabii dug deep to beat his closest rival Araik Marutjan of Germany in an explosive welterweight match.

Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov dominated his bout with Venezuela’s Angelino Cordova in the flyweight category and Wuttichai Masuk – Thailand’s great hope for boxing gold having already qualified for Rio 2016 – was equally convincing against Swaziland’s Thabiso Dlamini.

Great Britain’s Galal Yafai and Luke McCormack both progressed, while the Netherlands’ Peter Mullenberg looked in good form against another unlucky Venezuelan, Argenis Espana.

“I won each round in my opening bout and felt I dominated the contest without any trouble. I boxed from my own distance and tried to land clear punches, so I am still fresh, injury-free and looking forward my next contest,” said the Netherlands’ EUBC silver medalist afterwards.

Nigeria holds first Red Ball Tennis Tournament

Nigeria’s commitment to justify ITF’s identification as one of Africa’s leading hubs for talents was boosted over the weekend as the first Red Ball tournament in the country took place at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja.

Over a dozen kids featured in the programme tagged MP Tiger Tennis 8&Under Red Ball Mini Round-Robin Tournament which was supported by the London Tennis Association through its top oficial Patrick Hughesman.

The Red Ball programme according to the ITF is the foremost basic teaching of tennis as the ball has low pressure which makes it stay longer in the air thus allowing kids time to make more rallies and keeping them longer in the game.

“It makes tennis more fun for the kids because it helps them to work on the ethics and its motivating to see kids of about five years rallying up to 30 times unlike the normal ball with which you can hardly see them rally five times. They want to stay longer in the game and that is good to keep their interest in the sport,” Paul Moses, a Professional Tennis Registry UK-certified coach said.

The mixed event saw Tobi Ayoola defeat Sheni Oshikoya in the final of the 5&6 category while Toluwashe Dele-Oshiga made good use of his experience he gathered at the LTA Red Ball Tournament in Roehampton, London in August as he beat Sarah Chebli to emerge champion in the 7&8 category.

The programme has already caught the attention of the Nigeria Tennis Federation which has also declared its full support.

NTF boss, Sani Ndanusa thanked the initiator noting that in the last few years, MP Tennis in conjunction with the Lagos Country Club has been playing a big role in the growth of Nigerian tennis through its numerous developmental programmes.

“In the past few years, some of our junior national players featured in the clay court tournaments at the club as part of preparation for an African Championship in Tunisia which they did very well. An attestation to this fact is the ITF scholarship which is being enjoyed by Oyinlomo Qaudri in Morocco,” Ndanusa pointed.

Qaudri beats Burundi opponent, battles South African for Semifinal place…

Nigeria’s Oyinlomo Qaudri underlined her status as one of Africa’s star prospect on Wednesday as she rallied from a set down to beat Burundi’s Aisha Niyonkuru to enhance her chance of a semifinal place at the ongoing Africa U14 Junior Tennis Masters in Rabat, Morocco. The tournament is for the top 8 junior players in Africa.

The 14-year-old, who is the top ranked player in the West and Central African Zone, stumbled against her opponent 6-3 in the opening set but kept her composure to win the second set 6-3 before recording another 6-3 in the final set to end the dream of the Southern African’s quest of having a share of the ITF grant for the top finishers in the five-day championship which will end on Saturday.

It was an improved performance from Qaudri who was out rallied by Morocco’s Aziz Oumaima in her opening match on Tuesday. The Moroccan enjoy full support of the home fans but she was given a tough time by Quadri, who won the second set 6-4 having fell 6-2 in the first set. Oumaima’s exposure and quality eventually saw her claiming a 6-0 win in the deciding set but the Nigerians was widely applauded by the home fans who are surprised to see the standard of play of the Nigerian teenager.

ITF Junior Masters

“Today she (Quadri) raised her game. There is a lot of improvement in her game. For her to play three sets with Oumaima she is on top of her game because Oumaima, who is also 14 years old, just won two ITF tournaments in Morocco,” Nigeria’s coach Mohammed Ubale said.

Standing between Quadri, who incidentally is on a year-long ITF scholarship in Morocco, is Fichardt Carmen of South Africa. They will face-off in a winner-takes-all contest by noon on Thursday.

Quadri’s compatriot, Micheal Osewa crashed out in the race for the top prizes as he lost to El Mesbahi Soufiane of Morocco 6-2, 6-3. He will be playing for the 6th and 7th classification match on Thursday.

“Micheal is a bit rusty and it shows in his performance. All the other boys have been playing tournaments to prepare for this championship,” Ubale stated.

CCSF Tournament To Be Considered As WTF G-1 Event

The annual Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) International Taekwondo Opens may become a World Taekwondo Federation may (WTF) Grade 1 event in 2016.

With this status, the tournament would become a point hauling event for athletes across the globe as taekwondists are expected to use the tournament to up their world ranking.

Being the first tournament in Africa to use the electronic head gear, the CCSF championship has continued to attract the best fighters on the continent with countries like Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger Republic, Togo, Cameroun and Senegal taking part in this year’s tournament.

Efforts are on by the organizers of the CCSF Open to apply for the status from the world taekwondo ruling body.

For the best athlete of this year’s tournament, Mali’s Karamoko Soumare (+80kg), attending the tournament has really exposed him to world class equipment which would aid him in subsequent tournaments.

“Having attended series of tournament across Africa, I realized that CCSF tournament stands out in terms of organization and quality of equipment. The atmosphere was also superb. Being my first time of taking part in the competition, I think the knowledge I acquired would be helpful to me in other international tournaments and I look forward to taking part in more CCSF tourneys,” the Malian star said.

Soumare who won gold in the men’s heavyweight category believes the quality of athletes in Nigeria is enormous while blaming their under-achievement on lack of exposure of most of their athletes. “I respect Nigerian athletes particularly with the pedigree of their athletes, but they have not been able to use this to their advantage at international tournaments. We attend a lot of international tournaments but I hardly see Nigerians competing and this has really affected their rating globally. But attending international competition is vital for any nation to improve her athletes,” he added.

Also silver medalist at the CCSF Opens, Cameroun’s Kamgue Silvre hailed the organizers for putting the colourful tournament together, which he described as a world class championship. “I am surprised with the quality of organization as well as the atmosphere which is of international standard. I am indeed looking forward to the next edition because I have been able to up my skills as well as improve my rating among the best fighters in Africa. Winning silver will surely improve my chance of representing my country at the Olympics qualifiers come 2016. When the tournament gets the WTF G-1 rating, I believe more athletes within and outside Africa will be part of the tournament,” Kamgue, winner of the fair play award said.

Morocco’s Mohammed Rabii Named AIBA October Boxer Of The Month

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has named Moroccan welterweight Mohammed Rabii its Boxer of the Month for October. The 22 year old became Africa’s first ever gold medallist at the AIBA World Boxing Championships held in Doha earlier in the month, continuing an impressive run of form that included an unbeaten World Series of Boxing Season V with Morocco Atlas Lions team.

“It was an incredible feeling to win the gold in Doha after a lot of hard work and an intense training schedule, and I am honoured that AIBA have recognised that effort, too”, said Mohammed Rabii following the announcement.

An AIBA panel created the shortlist of boxers all of whom had put in exceptional performances in Doha, with the responsibility passed to AIBA’s social media followers to vote for their Boxer of the Month. Irish star Michael Conlan and French super heavyweight champion Tony Yoka were close seconds, but Rabii’s efforts had clearly captured the public’s imagination.

“Congratulations to Mohammed Rabii on his achievements in Doha and winning AIBA Boxer of the Month for October. It is with great pleasure that we saw the reaction of Morocco’s boxing fans to his gold medal win, which I have no doubt will help inspire Africa’s boxers to further success”, said AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.

Tennis: Nigeria battles 7 countries in Africa Junior Masters

Nigeria will slug it out with seven other African countries as the best junior tennis players across the continent converge in Rabat, Morocco for the Africa U14 Junior Tennis Masters.

Rising sensation, Oyinlomo Quadri and Micheal Oshewa will lead Nigeria’s challenge at the five-day event which will feature players from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Burundi, Egypt, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. The draw for the event is scheduled for Tuesday.

Nigeria’s coach, Mohammed Ubale and Oshewa, left the Lagos airport in the early hours of Monday to team up with Quadri, who is on a year-long ITF scholarship in Morocco.

13-year-old Quadri has been one of the most consistent junior players in Africa a fact highlighted by her dominance of the West and Central African Circuits. The same could be said of Oshewa, 13, whose remarkable performance at the ITF Circuit in Nairobi, Kenya and the African Junior Tennis Championship in Tunisia this year surprised many.

“We stand a very good chance because the two players have been on top of their game throughout the year,” Oshewa has been under my watch and he is set to go and Oyin’s game must have appreciated since she moved to Morocco last month and I believe she will be under no pressure; she should feel at home,” Ubale said.

Ubale pointed that the incentives for players that distinguished themselves at the championship is too huge such that the nation’s representatives will not want to miss.

Nigeria’s best outing at the tournament was in 2012 when Candy Idoko proved to be the best rising talent in Africa by winning the Boy’s U14 title while Sarah Adegoke capped a remarkable outing for Nigeria by clinching the Girl’s title to put Nigeria on the front burner in African Junior tennis.

Stand-out performers at the event will be entitled to an ITF grant which will be used to feature in junior tournaments across the world.

NSC To Partner CCSF On Taekwondo Development As NSCDC Dominates Tourney

Impressed with the ingenuity and immense contribution of Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) to taekwondo development and promotion, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has promised to enter into a four-year strategic partnership with the foundation.

However, the 3rd CCSF International Taekwondo Open witnessed a large turnout of athletes across the continent with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) dominating the eight events competed for at the two-day championship.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the championship held at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, Director General of NSC, Alhassan Yakmut said with what CCSF has been doing in terms of its programmes, it is clear that the foundation’s has been able to champion the ideals of the commission.

CCSF. Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation, taekwondo

“I am convinced beyond any doubt that CCSF has done a lot to promote and develop taekwondo in Nigeria. For us at the NSC, we want to partner organizations like this because they are doing things that are in line with our vision. The atmosphere at this year’s tournament is what obtains globally in terms of international standard and I don’t think any reasonable person will not be impressed with what they have seen here tonight. Apart from the tournament, they have had workshops and other developmental activities to support the upcoming athletes. With this, NSC will be entering into a four-year strategic partnership with CCSF to champion the development and promotion of taekwondo which is an Olympic sport in Nigeria. So from 2016, the collaboration will take off with NSC fully supporting the foundation in all its activities,” Alhassan said.

After two days of competitive action, NSCDC confirmed why it is committed to sports in Nigeria when its athletes dominated the medals table at the 3rd CCSF Open concluded at the weekend.

NSCDC amassed four gold, one silver and four bronze medals to beat Mali and Niger Republic to second and third places on the medal table.

Mali again showed why it remains of the taekwondo power house in Africa when the two inspired by Soumare Karamoko won two gold and two bronze medals while Niger Republic won same number of gold with one silver and one bronze medals.

From the 284 athletes that featured in the competition which has the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)-certified referees handling proceedings, Mali’s Karamoko was voted the best male athlete while NSCDC’s Chinazum Nwosu won the best female diadem.

Cameroun’s sole representative who fought his way into the final in the men’s -80kg to clinch silver medal won the fair play award for his sportsmanship during the final match, which he lost to NSCDC’s Segun Olushola. Youthful Thursdaline Peter was adjudged the most outstanding referee of the championship.

African, Commonwealth Champions Brace Up For 3Rd CCSF International Taekwondo Open In Abuja

With the equipment meant for the third Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) International Taekwondo Open already in the country, medalists at the 2015 African Games are eagerly waiting to taste action when the tournament begins on October 24 in Abuja.

From the only gold medalist in Nigeria in taekwondo at the 2015 African Games, Uzoamaka Otuadinma to the Silver medalist Nwosu Chinazum, the CCSF Open would surely afford them the opportunity to rub shoulders with the continent’s best fighters ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics Qualifiers in Morocco next year.

“I am indeed looking forward to the CCSF Open because it will afford us the opportunity to test our strength against some of the best athletes in Africa. Apart from aiming for the gold, it will help most of us to be focused ahead of the Olympics qualifiers particularly the use of the electronic head gear which we will be using for the first time as athletes. I know it is not going to be easy but I am eager to do better than the bronze medal I won in 2014 when the second edition of the championship was held,” 25 year-old Otuadinma said.

Chinazum believes the tournament would provide the right platform for them to hone their skills. “CCSF International championship Open has been the best championship and I confess it is perfect for Nigerian athletes,” she said.

For Otuadinma, making it to the Rio 2016 Olympics remains her priority but competing at the CCSF Opens would have put her in good shape as well as the right frame of mind for the Olympics qualifiers holding in Morocco next year.

Commonwealth silver medalist, Adaeze Asigbe opines that the presence of athletes from other African countries would give Nigeria athletes the chance to test their might against the continental best. “A very good tournament that has thrown a bigger challenge to Nigerian competitors owing to the fact that they had the chance to face good athletes from other countries,” she said.

Also athletes from Niger Republic explained that the tournament has become the best in Africa. “The most fantastic tournament in Africa,” said Mohammed Toure.

Meanwhile, Daedo Electronic Head Gear and body gear System expected to be used for the tournament have arrived from Spain, while Dartfish Video Replay System and a foreign technician will be flown in from Egypt to handle the system.

To inspire the athletes, free taekwondo uniforms which have been imported from South Korea will be given to first 100 persons to register as a way to empower athletes through equipments. The medals and trophies have also arrived from South Korea.

Morocco Make History And France, Cuba And Russia Celebrate Champions On Golden Finals Night Of AIBA World Boxing Championships Doha 2015

The final night of the 2015 World Boxing Championships brought Doha’s boxing fans to their feet as five world champions – at flyweight, lightweight, welterweight, light heavyweight and super heavyweight – were crowned on a historic night in Qatar.

AIBA DOHA OPEN-header

Cuba Domadores’ flyweight Yosbany Veitia and Baku Fires’ European Games Champion Elvin Mamishzada displayed similar game-plans early on, but it was the Azeri who’s patient tactics paid off. Veitia was left chasing the match, and Mamishzada chose his moments well to precision counter and take the title.

Defending World Champion Lazaro Alvarez started cautiously against unbeaten Azeri Albert Selimov. With the Selimov struggling to get close enough to the Cuban to threaten, he was cut at the end of the second round, leaving the referee no choice but to award a technical knockout – and deserved third World Championship gold – to Alvarez.

In the welterweight final, Morocco’s newly crowned WSB Boxer of the Year Mohammed Rabii dominated defending champion Daniyar Yeleussinov from the centre of the ring. The Kazakh star tried to launch his usual aggressive attacks, but as he struggled to hit the target, a delighted Rabii struck gold.

Irish light heavyweight Joe Ward presented Julio la Cruz with the biggest test of his Doha campaign so far, but the AIBA Boxer of the Year looked focused on a third successive world title. After the Cuban captain took the first two rounds, Ward’s late rally wasn’t enough, and la Cruz, every bit the champion throughout the tournament, retained the gold in style.

Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko was looking to go one better than his silver medal two years ago, but was unable to raise his energy levels after a gruelling tournament, leaving Tony Yoka – the man who overcame Joe Joyce in the semi-finals – to be France’s first World Champion since Willy Blain in 2003.

Earlier in the session, the box-off for a place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games between Elnur Abduraimov and Brazil’s Robson Conceicao saw a delighted Uzbekistan lightweight qualify, along with China’s Wei Liu, who had a walkover against Aerbaijan’s Parviz Baghirov.

The 2015 World Boxing Championships ended with 4 golds for Cuba, 2 for Russia and one apiece for Azerbaijan, France, Ireland and Morocco, with the latter two making history with their first ever AIBA World golds.
