Terrific Uzbek Tigers Halt Astana Arlans Kazakhstan With Outstanding 4-1 Victory in Tashkent

World Series of Boxing newcomers Uzbek Tigers underlined their Season VI huge potential on Saturday night as they defeated the reigning champions Astana Arlans Kazakhstan in a stunning display in Tashkent. The Sport Complex of Uzbekistan was lit up by a brilliant show of boxing from the home side, who now have two crucial matches left in Group D including the return match at the start of April.

The Tigers’ Asian Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov got the hosts off to the perfect start with the speed of his attacks proving too much for Arlans’ Temirtas Zhussupov. With the crowd firmly behind him, Dusmatov was able to withstand Zhussupov’s late fightback and the hosts took a crucial 1-0 lead.

Abdulkhay Sharakhmatov had a tough challenge in the second bout in the shape of two-time WSB Team Champion Meirbolat Toitov, and the southpaw duo were soon locked in to a fascinating contest. After five gripping rounds the bout was decided by Sharakhmatov’s superior speed and powerful right jabs, earning a unanimous decision from the judges and doubling the home advantage.

Tigers’ Fazliddin Meliboev and Askhat Ualikhanov’s light welterweight bout proved equally tight, but the Uzbek National Champion took charge early on and refused to concede the upper hand, earning the judges’ decision and sealing the home side’s win in unexpectedly comfortable fashion.

Kazakhstan’s rising star Meirim Nursultanov managed to halt the home side’s dominance in the fourth bout with the narrowest of wins over the Tigers’ Hurshidbek Normatov. With the contest tied at 38:38 after four rounds, Nursultanov turned up the heat and put the Arlans’ first point on the board, but the recovery proved short-lived. Former AIBA Junior World Champion Mirzobek Khasanov rallied after a poor start against Yerkin Mukhametzhan, edging another close encounter between the two exquisite WSB teams and rounding off a superb night of boxing with a 4-1 home win.

Brazil And Britain Deliver Perfect Olympic Preview With Hat-Trick Of Golds Apiece As Rio 2016 Tester Draws To A Close

Brazil’s boxing fans were given a mouthwatering preview of next year’s Olympic boxing competition as the finals of the Rio 2016 test event played out on Sunday afternoon in Barra da Tijuca. And it was the home boxers who stole the limelight, with three of the six Brazilian finalists winning gold.

Conceicao_Rio-Test-Event.jBoxers from Brazil delight home fans on route to Rio 2016 test event finals

“I’m very confident that boxing will be one of the most exciting sports to follow in August 2016 for the enjoyment of fans from all over the world”, said AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu after the tournament. “It will no doubt be one of the most spectacular Olympic Games of all time and we look forward to welcoming the spectators to Rio.”

The Olympic venue was put through its paces with ten men’s and three women’s finals, and fittingly it was Brazil’s Robson Conceição who first lit up the crowd with an inspired victory over Uzbekistan’s APB champion Hurshid Tojbaev to take the men’s lightweight gold in the day’s first bout.

His team-mate Joedison Teixeira also managed to produce a winning performance as he swept aside Britain’s Samuel Maxwell. The Brazilian duo will be hoping that their strong form will take them all the way to next year’s Olympics, where gold would make them household names.

“We are delighted to have been able to deliver the Aquece Rio Boxing Test Event on time, which demonstrates the capacity and readiness of Rio for the upcoming Olympic Games this summer”, said Breno Pontes, Boxing Competition Manager for Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as the event drew to a close.

British boxers featured in five finals, two of them in the women’s competition. Chanetelle Cameron succeeded where compatriot Lisa Whiteside could not, bringing home lightweight gold against French star Estelle Mossely.

Japan’s Ryomei Tanaka and Uzbek hero Hasanboy Dusmatov both defeated Brazilian opponents to claim flyweight and light flyweight gold respectively, but any disappointment soon evaporated as Chatchai Butdee and Murodjon Akhmadaliev conspired to deliver the bout of the day. Uzbekistan’s Akhmadaliev emerged the deserving victor, taking a hard-earned bantamweight gold.

That contest was nearly matched by the last final of the day as German super heavyweight Erik Pfeifer took gold against Frazer Clarke, sealing a superb day’s boxing in fitting style.

“I would like to thank the Rio 2016 Organising Committee on delivering an excellent Aquece Rio Test Event. Our athletes, officials and National Federations worked very closely with Rio 2016 Organising Committee and we had a chance to test the key components of how our boxing competition is going to run”, said AIBA Sports Director Kristin Brynildsen.

The 2015 boxing calendar draws to a close in style this weekend with a taste of what is to come next year with the Rio 2016 Olympic Boxing Test Event in Barra da Tijuca from 4-6 December. Top boxers from the men’s and women’s competition will get the chance to sample Rio’s unique atmosphere and give local boxing fans their own glimpse of what to expect inside the ring come August.

The draw was made on 3 December, with 16 female boxers taking part in the women’s Olympic flyweight, lightweight and middleweight classes, and 53 men competing across all ten of the male Olympic classes, from light flyweight to super heavyweight.

Among the big names on show is India’s five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom. The living legend returns from injury to face Venezuela’s AMBC American Women’s Champion Karlha Magliocco in her opening bout, while France’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Estelle Mossely will take on Mexico’s AMBC American Women’s Champion Victoria Torres in the pick of the lightweight action.

Great Britain’s former AIBA Junior World Champion Luke McCormack might be one the most promising lightweight boxers in the world at the moment, but he will have a stern opening test in the form of Carlos Balderas, the sole American boxer to have already qualified for Rio 2016.

Also qualified is Thailand’s AIBA World Boxing Championship bronze medallist Wuttichai Masuk. The light welterweight will be able to get a precious first-hand preview of next year’s big event when he takes to the ring in the RioCentro venue against Swaziland’s Thabiso Dlamini.

AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu welcomed the 243 boxers taking part in the 10-day competition, which begins with the preliminary rounds running from Tuesday to Friday.

Opening proceedings with the 49kg class, the first round highlight for Tuesday afternoon sees India’s Commonwealth Games silver medalist Laishram Devendro Singh take on Britain’s young hope Harvey Horn. As with all the weight classes, the four top seeds join the action in the last 16, with Uzbekistan’s ASBC Asian Champion and second seed Hasanboy Dusmatov looking to have the best run to the final.

In the 56kg class, Ireland’s WSB number one boxer and EUBC European Championship winner Michael Conlan has a golden opportunity to bring home his country’s first ever AIBA World Championship gold medal. The pick of the first preliminary round sees Thailand’s defending ASBC Asian champion Chatchai Butdee face the Ukrainian AIBA World Championship bronze medalist Mykola Butsenko.

In a 60kg class loaded with big bouts, Cuba’s two-time AIBA World Champion Lazaro Alvarez has a good chance of reaching the semi finals, while the first round highlight sees Russia’s WSB star Adlan Abdurashidov face Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Championship silver medalist and WSB Team Champion, Zakir Safiullin.

The ever-strong Cuban team brings no fewer than five top seeds to Doha; Yosbany Veitia, Lazaro Alvarez (60kg), Yasnier Toledo (64kg), Arlen Lopez (75kg) and Erislandy Savon (91kg). Two years ago in Almaty, however, it was Kazakhstan who topped the team rankings, and in Doha they have four top-ranking boxers competing. AIBA Boxer of the Year for the last two years Daniyar Yeleussinov is a strong contender for gold in the 69kg category, and he is joined by fellow top seeds Kayrat Yeralyev (56kg), Adilbek Niyazymbetov (81kg) and Ivan Dychko (+91kg).

Uzbekistan’s talented young Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games winner Bektemir Melikuziev is undefeated since joining the elite 75kg class in January. The 19-year-old middleweight star’s Doha campaign begins with an intriguing match against Georgian veteran Zaal Kvachatadze.

In the welterweight category, Lithuania’s EUBC European Champion Eimantas Stanionis faces Ireland’s London 2012 Olympian Adam Nolan in the preliminary round. “Nothing has changed after the draw, and as a new European Champion I have got great expectations in Doha. You can’t change the draw so I will do my best to win in the ring against everybody. I know my Irish opponent well enough, but I am also well prepared,” said Lithuania’s Stanionis following the official draw.

WSB Regular Season Week 8 (06 March) Preview

Can British Lionhearts tame China Dragons away in Sanya?

After the British Lionhearts defeated China Dragons in week one of the World Series of Boxing (WSB), few would have expected the Franchise to only have won one more match before the second phase of the Regular Season.

That is exactly the case however, and the British team sit sixth in Group A, just one place above China who could go above them with a win at home.

The Chinese Franchise only have a single victory to their name this season, but the Lionhearts have failed to win in all of their four away matches.

One fact which will play into the favour of the British team is that none of China’s five fighters competing in Sanya have a WSB victory to their name.

Jun Shan and Lightweight (60 kg) Lionheart Oualid Belaoura also both lost their only WSB contest in Season V to Lazaro Alvarez, which makes their match in Sanya a crucial one for the confidence of either fighter.

Chinese Welterweight (69 kg) Liu Wei then looks for his first victory in his third match of the campaign against Britain’s 2-1 Haizel Ekow Tabiri-Essuman who is edging near the top five of their weight class.

The action follows at Light heavyweight (81 kg) where China’s Yibulayin Abudureyimu makes his debut when he fights Britain’s 1-1 John Newell, whose lone win this season came via walkover.

One of the most exciting boxers in all of WSB competes in the last fight at Super heavyweight (91+ kg) when the number three ranked 3-0 Lionheart Joseph Joyce puts his undefeated record on the line against Serbia’s 0-1 Vladan Babic.

Rafako Hussars Poland plan return to form against confident Puerto Rico Hurricanes

The Regular Season in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) has been excellent so far, and the second phase of the competition begins with an exciting match between Rafako Hussars Poland and Puerto Rico Hurricanes.

It has been a troubling season for the Polish Franchise who have shown glimpses of magic, but have lost six of their seven fixtures.

Puerto Rico on the other hand have been a revelation during their debut campaign, winning half their matches including a win over neighbours USA Knockouts last week.

The evening finishes with a Super heavyweight (91+ kg) shootout, where Mantas Valavicius seeks to become the first Hussars representative to win at the weight in four attempts against Puerto Rico’s 1-0 Clayton Laurent Jr.

After a marvelous start to Season V in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), USA Knockouts came crashing down to Earth last week after losing to neighbours Puerto Rico Hurricanes.
