Top Talents From Asia And Oceania Ready To Compete For Rio 2016 Quota Places At Olympic Boxing Qualification Event

The best boxers from Asia and Oceania are making final preparations for the AIBA Asian/Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Qian’an, China, from 25 March to 2 April. The ultimate goal for each of the 279 boxers registered is securing one of the 30 men’s and 6 women’s quota places for Rio 2016, and the chance to represent their country in August on the world’s greatest sporting stage.

”Having nearly 300 boxers participating to the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualification event is a remarkable proof of the vitality of our sport in these 2 continents. The Local Organizing Committee and the City of Qian’an have done a tremendous work and I look forward to witnessing our boxers competing to fulfil their dreams and qualify for Rio 2016 in a state of the art venue.” declared AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.

Among the big names taking part in the women’s competition will be India’s five-time AIBA World Champion Mary Kom, China’s three-time World Champion Ren Cancan and Kazakhstan World Champion Nazym Kyzaybay, firmly underlining the strength of the field.

Uzbekistan boxing has gone from strength to strength in recent months and the men’s team will be looking to secure all six possible quota spaces for Rio with WSB star Hasanboy Dusmatov, AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Bakhodir Jalolov and 2014 Asian Games silver medallist Shakhobiddin Zoirov the strong favourites to book their Olympic places.

Kazakhstan will also be expecting great things from their side which includes rising star and Youth World Champion Abylaykhan Zhussupov, AIBA World Championship runner-up Ivan Dychko, 2013 AIBA World Champion Zhanibek Alimkhanuly and London 2012 Olympic Games silver medallist Adilbek Niyazymbetov.

The Mongolian boxers looked impressive at the recent Chemistry Cup in Germany, taking three golds at the lighter weight classes, while New Zealand will be sending a twelve-strong team to Qian’an, including the Nyika brothers who both won at the Trans Tasman Tournament last month.

”The joint Qualification Event with Oceania is the first time in AIBA history and it would be a great experience for our athletes before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Asia had 62 qualified athletes in London four years ago and we are hoping to improve this number in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games demonstrating the continuous development of our continent” said ASBC President and AIBA Vice-President Mr. Serik Konakbayev

Hosts China will be looking to flyweight Hu Jianguan for inspiration, although Thailand’s Chatchai Butdee will also be pushing hard for a place. Butdee’s female teammates Peamwilai Laopeam and Tassamalee Thongjan also have great chances of qualification.

Australia’s excellent women’s team includes Commonwealth Games winner Shelley Watts and 2014 Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist Caitlin Parker, while for the men, Daniel Lewis and Joseph Goodall also have the potential to qualify.

“This Olympic Qualification tournament will be a testing event for all boxers as every boxer in the tournament is a National Champion and some could very well be among the best in the world. I wish good luck to all Oceanian boxers and remind them, in all their endeavours, to always be true to yourself by doing as best as you can because then, in the future, you will have no regrets as to what might have been” added Ted Tanner, President of the Oceania Boxing Confederation.

Brazil And Britain Deliver Perfect Olympic Preview With Hat-Trick Of Golds Apiece As Rio 2016 Tester Draws To A Close

Brazil’s boxing fans were given a mouthwatering preview of next year’s Olympic boxing competition as the finals of the Rio 2016 test event played out on Sunday afternoon in Barra da Tijuca. And it was the home boxers who stole the limelight, with three of the six Brazilian finalists winning gold.

“I’m very confident that boxing will be one of the most exciting sports to follow in August 2016 for the enjoyment of fans from all over the world”, said AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu after the tournament. “It will no doubt be one of the most spectacular Olympic Games of all time and we look forward to welcoming the spectators to Rio.”

The Olympic venue was put through its paces with ten men’s and three women’s finals, and fittingly it was Brazil’s Robson Conceição who first lit up the crowd with an inspired victory over Uzbekistan’s APB champion Hurshid Tojbaev to take the men’s lightweight gold in the day’s first bout.

His team-mate Joedison Teixeira also managed to produce a winning performance as he swept aside Britain’s Samuel Maxwell. The Brazilian duo will be hoping that their strong form will take them all the way to next year’s Olympics, where gold would make them household names.

“We are delighted to have been able to deliver the Aquece Rio Boxing Test Event on time, which demonstrates the capacity and readiness of Rio for the upcoming Olympic Games this summer”, said Breno Pontes, Boxing Competition Manager for Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as the event drew to a close.

British boxers featured in five finals, two of them in the women’s competition. Chanetelle Cameron succeeded where compatriot Lisa Whiteside could not, bringing home lightweight gold against French star Estelle Mossely.

Japan’s Ryomei Tanaka and Uzbek hero Hasanboy Dusmatov both defeated Brazilian opponents to claim flyweight and light flyweight gold respectively, but any disappointment soon evaporated as Chatchai Butdee and Murodjon Akhmadaliev conspired to deliver the bout of the day. Uzbekistan’s Akhmadaliev emerged the deserving victor, taking a hard-earned bantamweight gold.

That contest was nearly matched by the last final of the day as German super heavyweight Erik Pfeifer took gold against Frazer Clarke, sealing a superb day’s boxing in fitting style.

“I would like to thank the Rio 2016 Organising Committee on delivering an excellent Aquece Rio Test Event. Our athletes, officials and National Federations worked very closely with Rio 2016 Organising Committee and we had a chance to test the key components of how our boxing competition is going to run”, said AIBA Sports Director Kristin Brynildsen.

Boxers From Brazil Delight Home Fans On Route To Rio 2016 Test Event Finals

The semi-finals of the Rio 2016 test event offered a mouthwatering taste of what is to come at next August’s Olympic Games, with some of the world’s best boxers lighting up RioCentro’s Pavilion 4 in Barra da Tijuca.

There was plenty for the home fans to cheer as Brazil’s rising star Robson Conceição won a tight match against Britain’s Luke McCormack, setting up a final against Uzbek lightweight Hurshid Tojibaev. Fellow Brazilian Joedison Teixeira also progressed after seeing off the challenge of Thailand’s Wuttichai Masuk, and he will now face Britain’s Sam Maxwell in Sunday’s light welterweight final.

Brazil’s former AMBC American Confederation Champion Juliao Henriques Neto also rose to the occasion, defeating Morocco’s Achraf Kharroubi in their flyweight semi-final. Japan’s newly crowned National Champion Ryomei Tanaka now stands between him and the gold medal, while in the bantamweight semi, Thailand’s AIBA Worlds bronze medalist Chatchai Butdee went through by beating Japan’s 19-year-old Arashi Morisaka.

Uzbekistan’s WSB star Hasanboy Dusmatov defeated Shyam Kumar Kakara in their light flyweight semi-final and will now meet Brazil’s latest APB hope Patrick Lourenco.

“The Rio test event is very competitive but after my WSB season and main AIBA Boxing events I feel I can win the gold medal here in Brazil. It is great that our International Federation has staged this competition in Rio and to be able to acclimatise for next year’s competition,” said Dusmatov.

Doha 2015 finalist Murodjon Akhmadaliev had to be in top form to see off Carlos Andre Rocha, and Morocco’s defending AIBA World Champion Mohammed Rabii just did enough to scrape through against Mexico’s Juan Pablo Romero.

Netherlands’ EUBC silver medalist Peter Mullenberg’s stamina and spirit saw him through a tough encounter with crowd favourite Michel Borges to reach the light heavyweight final where he will face Britain’s Joshua Buatsi.

“It was a really close fight today against the young Brazilian boxer and I probably fought too much from my heart, but I knew I had to work hard to beat Borges in his home ring,” said Mullenberg after his semi-final.

Germany’s APB star Erik Pfeifer eliminated Brazilian veteran Rafael Duarte Lima in their super heavyweight semi, and he will be confident going in to a tough final against another Brit, Frazer Clarke.

In the women’s competition, India’s five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Mary Kom couldn’t overcome a spirited Virginia Fuchs. The American now goes on to face Great Britain’s AIBA Worlds silver medalist Lisa Whiteside after she defeated Brazil’s Grazieli Jesus De Souza in Saturday’s second flyweight semi-final.

Chantelle Cameron was too strong for another home favourite, three-time AMBC American Confederation Women’s Champion Taynna Cardoso, and will meet French rival Estelle Mossely in the lightweight final. Brazil’s Flavia Figueiredo found success against Australia’s 2014 Youth Olympic Games bronze medalist Caitlin Parker, however, and she faces Khadija Mardi in Sunday’s hotly anticipated middleweight gold-medal match.

Big Names Dominate The Opening Day Of Rio 2016 Boxing Test Event

Pavilion 4 at the RioCentro complex of Olympic venues in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, hosted the opening day of boxing action at the Rio 2016 boxing Test Event yesterday, offering a glimpse of the talent set to perform on sport’s biggest stage next year.

The Great Britain team had a successful day, with AIBA Women’s World silver medalist Lisa Whiteside leading the way after edging through against Morocco’s Zohra Ez-Zahraoui in their flyweight bout.

“I really enjoyed getting in there today and it was a fantastic experience. She was an awkward opponent so I had to keep my shots straight and my guard tight and I finished strongly with a good last round. I look forward to boxing in the semi-finals tomorrow and am fit and ready to go,” said the experienced British boxer afterwards, who will be joined by team-mate Chantelle Cameron in the next round.

India’s five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Mary Kom was too strong for Venezuela’s former AMBC American Women’s Champion Karlha Magliocco and advanced to the semi-finals of the flyweight along with Estelle Mossely of France, after the lightweight defeated Mexico’s AMBC American Women’s Champion Victoria Torres.

In the men’s competition, Morocco’s current AIBA World Champion and WSB star Mohammed Rabii dug deep to beat his closest rival Araik Marutjan of Germany in an explosive welterweight match.

Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov dominated his bout with Venezuela’s Angelino Cordova in the flyweight category and Wuttichai Masuk – Thailand’s great hope for boxing gold having already qualified for Rio 2016 – was equally convincing against Swaziland’s Thabiso Dlamini.

Great Britain’s Galal Yafai and Luke McCormack both progressed, while the Netherlands’ Peter Mullenberg looked in good form against another unlucky Venezuelan, Argenis Espana.

“I won each round in my opening bout and felt I dominated the contest without any trouble. I boxed from my own distance and tried to land clear punches, so I am still fresh, injury-free and looking forward my next contest,” said the Netherlands’ EUBC silver medalist afterwards.

Rio Test Event sees a five-time AIBA World Champion returning to the ring in Rio

The 2015 boxing calendar draws to a close in style this weekend with a taste of what is to come next year with the Rio 2016 Olympic Boxing Test Event in Barra da Tijuca from 4-6 December. Top boxers from the men’s and women’s competition will get the chance to sample Rio’s unique atmosphere and give local boxing fans their own glimpse of what to expect inside the ring come August.

The draw was made on 3 December, with 16 female boxers taking part in the women’s Olympic flyweight, lightweight and middleweight classes, and 53 men competing across all ten of the male Olympic classes, from light flyweight to super heavyweight.

Among the big names on show is India’s five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom. The living legend returns from injury to face Venezuela’s AMBC American Women’s Champion Karlha Magliocco in her opening bout, while France’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Estelle Mossely will take on Mexico’s AMBC American Women’s Champion Victoria Torres in the pick of the lightweight action.

Morocco’s defending AIBA World Champion and WSB favourite Mohammed Rabii will be among the star attractions of the men’s competition, along with Uzbekistan’s own unbeaten WSB hero Hasanboy Dusmatov, who faces Venezuela’s Angelino Cordova in the first round of the light flyweight class.

Great Britain’s former AIBA Junior World Champion Luke McCormack might be one the most promising lightweight boxers in the world at the moment, but he will have a stern opening test in the form of Carlos Balderas, the sole American boxer to have already qualified for Rio 2016.

Also qualified is Thailand’s AIBA World Boxing Championship bronze medallist Wuttichai Masuk. The light welterweight will be able to get a precious first-hand preview of next year’s big event when he takes to the ring in the RioCentro venue against Swaziland’s Thabiso Dlamini.

World’s top boxers set to ignite 2016 Rio Olympic boxing Test Event

Some of the world’s greatest boxers will make their way to Rio de Janeiro from December 4th till 6th to compete in what is set to be a mouthwatering appetiser for the 2016 Olympic Games in August.

Of the 60 men competing in the ten Olympic weight categories, will be World Series of Boxing and AIBA Pro Boxing stars, including Brazil’s hopeful Robson Conceicao and Kazakhstan’s legendary Vassiliy Levit. Among the women competing in the three female weight categories are two major middleweight talents – AIBA Women’s World Champion Claressa Shields and Netherlands’ 2015 European Games winner Nouchka Fontijn.

“As we draw nearer to 2016 and what is likely to be one of the most spectacular Olympic Games of all time, this is the perfect moment for the boxers and organisers to take part in a test event held by Rio 2016 Organising Committee,” said AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu. “The boxers and the city alike are entering the final stages of preparations for the world’s biggest sporting event, and we want to give men’s and women’s boxing the perfect platform for the enjoyment of fans around the world.”

The event will provide Brazilian sports fans with a sneak preview of the kind of talent they can expect to see in the ring in Rio next year. Thirteen of those taking part in the men’s test event have already secured their place to compete on the world’s biggest stage in 2016. Among those who will be hoping to make a swift return are Cuba’s London 2012 gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez and Kazakhstan’s super-heavyweight hero Ivan Dychko.

The women’s flyweight competition will see the return of India’s five-time World Champion Mary Kom, returning to the ring after injury. Brazil’s own Olympic medalist Adriana Araujo will be hoping to put in a confidence-boosting performance in front of the home fans, with Estelle Mossely and England’s Chantelle Cameron looking to leave their mark in the city.

“Our preparations have gone well and we are excited not just to stage the Olympic Boxing competition, but to have such a strong team ready to compete,” said Brazil Boxing Federation President Mauro Silva. “Our sport is enjoying huge popularity at the moment in Brazil, and if the home fans inspire our athletes to gold medals it will be an experience that nobody will ever forget.”
