Keshi Thanks NFF, Players For Bronze Effort…Tips CHAN Four For Brazil 2014

20140202-080848.jpg

After a memorable six weeks with home-based Super Eagles players culminating in a bronze medal effort at the just concluded SA 2014 CHAN African Nations Tourney, team’s Head Coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi has anchored the success story of the team on the support he has received from the Nigeria Football Federation, and by extension the Sports Ministry, the players and members of staff of the team.

Addressing the team and its officials late Saturday night, Keshi says the NFF have been very supported, the players have opportunity to lay a claim to the World Cup place in Brazil and the staff of the team have been totally committed to the job of uplifting Nigerian football.

From the players he singled out Ejike Uzoenyi, the Most Valuable Player of the CHAN 2014 for special mention, noting that at a point the player’s form dropped drastically but he listened to advise to improve and today, he has become the MVP of a major championship in world and particularly African football calendar.

He thanked all his technical assistants for their invaluable advise. “From Amokachi to Shorunmu and Coach Valere, we spent hours together after dinner or games just strategizing and most times I come out to speak but they have been too supportive and I want to thank them.” Dayo Enebi Achor, team’s administrator got the plaudits on the part of the staff, with Keshi insisting that but for the near perfect professionalism of the staff and their self denial for nearly two months, success no matter how little would never have been achieved.

Keshi then made the following remarks, “It will be to my delight if four players from this team we have taken to CHAN can make it to the World Cup in Brazil, but you must be dedicated, respect your club coaches and make discipline your watchword”.

Uzoenyi Dedicates MVP To God, Teammates…Gets Plaudits From Mates

South Africa CHAN 2014 Player of the Tournament, Chrisantus Ejike Uzoenyi of Rangers International of Enugu, has attributed his feat to his strong believe in God, the immense support of his teammates and family members.

He also promised to ginger his teammates to battle for shirts in the coming summer World Cup in Brazil, because he believes that many of them are equal if not better than those who ply their trade outside the shores of Nigeria. He promised that the win of the MVP will not get him distracted, because he wants to eke a name for himself in Nigeria’s football annals.

All his 22 other teammates also believed that he was deserving of the title as many of them refused to acknowledge the petit playmaker, when he was named the tournament’s best.

His teammates however were full of praises for the Nigerian side, with Keshi himself noting the suddenly we are losing our heads again, because those we dashed drinks are now coming to ask for more.

Eagles Return Home After CHAN…Team Sorry For Trophy Miss…As Envoy Preaches Humility

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will return home on Sunday night after a hectic three weeks of participation at the CHAN African Nations Tourney. The first timers emerged with a bronze medal at the tourney, with skipper of the side, Chigozie Agbim, pleading with Nigerian for coming short.

“We came here with the intention to win the championship, but we could not make it, but we remain thankful to God that we came away with the bronze medal, the fair play trophy and we produced the Player of the Tournament.

The Nigerian side will depart Cape Town venue of the final on Sunday morning, head to Johannesburg and from there connect Lagos, from where the. team will leave for its final destination in Abuja on Tuesday morning after sleeping over in Lagos.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Ambassador Sunday S. Yusuf, has counseled the CHAN 2014 Super Eagles to make humility their watchword as they aspire for higher football challenges, with big money moves for some of the p[layers already looming.

The envoy who visited the team at dinner time at the Garden Court Hotel, said he was totally convinced at the prowess of the team and will stop at nothing to keep advertising the team to the highest level of governance in Nigeria. “President Goodluck Jonathan, whom I represent here is proud of you and all Nigerians are proud of this team also but we must allow the little success we have here to get into our heads”, he said.

Zimbabwean Coach: My Penalties’ Plot Failed…Salutes Eagles Work Rate

Zimbabwe National team coach, Ian Gorowa, says because one of his players was red carded in the first half of the third place game against Nigeria at the CHAN tournament, he planned for a penalty shoot-out to oust the Eagles but the plan failed him.

“When you are down in the first quarter of a game like that and against a strong side like Nigeria you will want to make a statement by being cautious and then eventually waiting for a penalty shoot-out. But we defended and defended and at a point we have to cave in to the fire-works. But I was really looking forward to a penalty shoot-out that never was.

He thereafter praised the resilience of the Nigerian side, while declaring that Zimbabwe as a country has garnered immeasurable knowledge for playing in the semi-final of the CHAN tourney, urging other SADC member nations to keep pushing for the top in African and world football.

My Defenders Shocked Me With Tackles-Konadu

…Eagles, Blackstars Co-habit In Cape Town

Black Stars of Ghana Coach, Maxwell Konadu, says he was shocked at the attitude of his defenders in the semi-final game against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Wednesday and had to call them to order at a point if they were to avoid a second red card.

Speaking at Cape Town’s Garden Court hotel on Thursday afternoon, Konadu, said while he desires victory against Nigeria he never wanted to use unorthodox methods to achieve that. “Honestly, my defenders shocked me and I had to call them quickly to order, because it seems at a point they were losing their heads and it would have been very bad for us. But we are still very happy that we won the match at the end of the day.”

The coach said his side was not in any way better than the Eagles but were the luckier side on the night of the encounter. “We were the luckier side today and we have to savour it now until the Nigerians find an opportunity to take a revenge on us”, he said.

The Super Eagles returned to Cape Town on Thursday evening to commence preparation for the third place game against Zimbabwe. The team is returning to its abode at the Green Court hotel De Waal, where the Ghana Black Stars are also staying for the final day hostilities.

Minister Hails Eagles, Redeems Pledge…Maigari Doles Out $10,000 Promises Better Brazil 2014

…Team Back In Cape Town For Warriors

Sports Minister, Hon Bolaji Abdulahi on Thursday morning hailed the resilience of the Super Eagles at the ongoing CHAN African Nations tournament in South Africa, declaring that Nigerians from President Goodluck Jonathan to the common man on the streets appreciate the team.

Speaking when he addressed the team at their President Hotel and Conference Centre in Bloemfontein, Abdulahi, said despite the Eagles losing via penalty shootout to Ghana in the semi-final of the CHAN tournament he was totally satisfied with the performance of the players and will continue to support the team to achieve more.

The Minister who was in company of NFF President Alhaji Aminu Maigari, Technical Committee Chairman, Barr Chris Green, and the Senate Committee Chairman on Sports, Adamu Gumba praised the leadership of the NFF and the technical crew for raising a team that has made Nigerians proud at the CHAN tourney. He thereafter redeemed his pledge of $100,000 to the team for defeating Morocco in the quarter final and another $100,000 for its sterling performance against Ghana despite losing on penalties.

He also urged the team to go ahead and win the third place match against Zimbabwe on Saturday, assuring that they will get the reward of the government when they do that.

NFF President Aminu Maigari, who himself personally doled out $10,000 to the team before the Ghana game on Wednesday, assured the Minister that the team will get better as it prepares for the Brazil 2014 World Cup. He said earnest preparations are already in place for an outstanding outing by the team at the championship.

According to media officer of the Ben Alaiya team Coach, Stephen Keshi and Captain Chigozie Agbim, assured that the team will not disappoint in the third place game to be played on Saturday in Cape Town. Keshi thanked the youthful Minister for his support for the team and assured that the team will get better with every opportunity on offer.

WILL THE EAGLES SOAR TONIGHT? Or will the Stars shine so bright it’s Ghana vs Nigeria at CHAN 2014- Sola Rogers

20140129-094556.jpg

Keshi

The first edition of the CAF CHAN Tournament was hosted by Ivory Coast in 2009 the final was played between Congo DR and Ghana and it ended Congo DR 2 – 0 Ghana, the 3rd place play-off Between Zambia and Senegal ended Zambia 2 – 1 Senegal.

Then came the next edition of the CAF CHAN tournament in 2011 hosted by Sudan, the host nation made it to the 3rd place play-off where they faced Algeria, the Sudanese pipped the Algerians by a lone goal, and in the final of that year’s tournament Tunisia walloped Angola 3-0 to carry the day.

Fast forward to 2014 and it’s the turn of the Rainbow nation South Africa. The host nation started on a bright note winning their first game and playing a draw in the second while Nigeria faltered at the start of their debut at CHAN.

A must win for both nations ended up in favour of the Nigerians who ran the Bafana Bafana ragged and this led to the South Africa minister tongue-lashing the team and calling for a complete overhaul of the entire football system, it was even hinted that a change of name might be in the offing.

The Super Eagles however moved on the quarter-final stage to face African football powerhouse Morocco in an epic battle. Two goals in quick succession in the first half of the game was surely going to be enough to sent the boys from Nigeria packing ! But wait a minute, isn’t this the same coach that won the AFCON trophy in the same country around this time last year? Well some pep-talk by Stephen Keshi was all it took as the Eagles came out Guns blazing in the 2nd half of the match to give us one of the finest moments in football history as the Super Eagles eventually triumphed over the Atlas Lions of Morocco to book a place in the Semi-final of the tournament.

The Blackstars of Ghana also won their quarter final match to book a place in the Semi-final against their brothers from West-Africa Nigeria. The Ghanians tutored by Maxwell Konadu have arguably got the meanest defence at this years CHAN, letting only two goals in the four games they have played so far.

The Nigerians on the other hand have got serious issues at the back and this is evident in the way they have been letting in goals. Captain and goalkeeper of the team Chigozie Agbim has been largely singled for blame but we all forget that a goalkeeper is only as good as his back line.

So today when the home Blackstars of Ghana take on the Home Super Eagles of Nigeria it will be a battle between the team with the “best” defence against the team with the “worst” defence. But that’s not all while the Ghanians have not conceded much they haven’t scored much either, a miserly 4 goals from 4 games is not altogether “daunting” .

The Super Eagles on the other hand have scored a whopping twelve goals in four matches (that’s an average of three per match) so in contrast to their West African brothers the Eagles have been extremely prolific.

So today in Bloemfontein it’s the “Meanest” Defence versus the “Greatest” offence, and believe me when I say “something’s gotta give” this match will be good for the image of the African game and hopefully help attract more attention to the Local Leagues that have suffered much in the hand of foreign football leagues.

Can the Ghanians make it to their second CHAN final?

Will the Stars shine bright tonight?

Will the Eagles soar into the finals on their debut at CHAN

Can Keshi make history by making it to the final of 2 CAF tourneys back to back in the same country ?

All questions will be answered tonight at 7pm when the SUPER EAGLES take on the BLACKSTARS

Today it’s Konadu vs Keshi,

it’s Godfrey Saka vs Ejike Uzoenyi,

it’s Ghana vs Nigeria. And may the best team win

Eagles Arrive Bloemfontein, Starts Training For Ghana…Kwambe Happy To Return

20140127-141043.jpg

The Super Eagles of Nigeria arrived Bloemfontein, venue of their semi-final clash against the Black Stars of Ghana on Sunday night to the warm embrace of Nigerians and residents of the city. Media Officer of the team Ben Alaiya reports that the first person to enquire about the team’s welfare on arrival was National Women’s teams coordinator, Aisha Falode, who is there in South Africa on CAF assignment.

The Nigerian team was split into two on the trip to Bloemfontein, with the first team made up of officials, arriving the city by 7pm, while the other half of players and coaches came into town at about 9:30pm.

The team is quartered at the President Hotel and Conference Centre, alongside the Zimbabwean national team who will be playing the first semi-final at the Free State Stadium against their Libyan opponents also on Wednesday. Residents of the city are already predicting a Nigeria-Zimbabwe final, as they think Southern Africa’s only pride remaining in the tournament are the Robert Mugabe boys.

The team will resume training on Monday evening in the city, while it is expected that it will be given a chance to feel the stadium for the game on Tuesday evening. There are lots of Nigerians here in Bloemfontein, because of its proximity to Johannesburg and other factors. “We don’t expect to lack support here because of the huge population of Nigerians and the fact that the Supporters Club is on ground”, declared team administrator, Dayo Enebi AChor.

Meanwhile returnee full back, Solomon Kwambe was full of smiles when asked about his return to the first team for the game against Ghana after seeing out his one match ban following two bookings against Bafana Bafana. “I thank my mates for keeping us in the tournament in my absence and I promise that if I am picked for the semi-final game I will make up for my absence in the previous game”.

Maigari: Memorable weekend signposts memorable year for Nigeria football

20140126-163959.jpg

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari posited at the weekend that memorable wins for Nigerian National Teams has signposted the making of a memorable year in the offing for the country’s game.

At the Dobsonville Stadium, Johannesburg, the U-20 Women National Team, Falconets, pipped their South African counterparts 1-0 for a 7-0 aggregate in the final African qualifying series for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, due in Canada in August.

At the Cape Town Stadium, the Super Eagles B literally rose from the dead, coming from a 0-3 deficit to draw level and eventually edge out Morocco’s Atlas Lions 4-3 in extra time, in what remains the most extraordinary match in the history of the African Nations
Championship.

Maigari says the victories not only confirm South Africa as a happy hunting ground for the present NFF, but also presages what is set to be an extraordinary year for Nigeria football.

“It has been an amazing weekend, in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Falconets concluded their fixture against Basetsana (South Africa’s U-20 girls) in emphatic fashion and the Super Eagles fully underscored the ever-unyielding spirit of the Nigerian.

“It’s a long time that the football world witnessed such a dramatic comeback, with all the thrills and frills. Our U-20 boys did something
like this against then USSR, in their quarter final duel at the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship, which people still refer to as Dammam Miracle. The Super Eagles B have given us a Cape Town Wonder and they certainly look very good for the trophy.”

Maigari will lead the Nigeria delegation to Bloemfontein on Wednesday for the semi final cracker, against the winner between Ghana and Democratic Republic of Congo, which was playing out on Sunday night.

The Free State Stadium hosted the clash between the Super Eagles A and Greece at the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals, which Nigeria lost 1-2 after taking a first half lead.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday evening congratulated the Eagles for an amazing comeback and charged them to fly all the way to the trophy.

Nigerian Minister of Sports commends Super Eagles; offers team another incentive of 100,000USD

Abdullahi commends Super Eagles; offers team another incentive of 100,000USD

An extremely elated Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has applauded the fighting spirit of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, which beat the Atlas Lions of Morocco yesterday to qualify for the semi final of the ongoing African Nations Championship in South Africa.

The Super Eagles came back from three goals down to defeat the Moroccans 4-3 in a thrilling quarterfinal match in Cape Town, which went into extra time.

Abdullahi said the team showed passion, discipline and commitment, which are hallmarks of the Nigerian spirit. “With the kind of overwhelming joy that followed the victory across our country, one cannot but feel that perhaps, these players are destined to win the trophy.”

He also disclosed that the NSC would offer the team the princely sum of 100,000USD if they beat their next opponent and qualify for the final of the CHAN tournament, which is for players in the domestic leagues of participating countries.

The NSC had earlier offered the team an incentive of 100,000USD if they beat Morocco and qualify for the semi final, which they did in a dramatic manner yesterday. The minister said the team would get the money before their next match on Wednesday.

Abdullahi stated the incentives are Government’s way of motivating the players to give their best and triumph over their opponents. He added that if the “boys qualify for the final and go ahead to win the trophy, they can be confident that a grateful nation will remember for a long time to come that they, with typical Nigerian grits and determination, have extended our dominance of African football.”

He however urged the team not to be lulled by its present victory but to focus on the ultimate prize, which is the CHAN trophy. “I have no doubt in my mind, that with the Almighty God on our side and with the same commitment and will to succeed, the home-based Super Eagles will continue to excel

Uzoenyi Now Mr. Double Three …Says Victory Is Ordained…Morocco Captain Salutes Eagles Resilience …Team Relaxes In Cape Pool

Uzoenyi Now Mr. Double Three …Says Victory Is Ordained

After winning three Man of the Match Awards back to back, CHAN Super Eagles talisman, Ejike Uzoenyi is now known as double three by teammates even as he says he did not win the awards alone but with the support of his mates.

“Its like am still dreaming because when we were down by 3-0, it was like the world has ended and finally we started to come back and many said it may be impossible but see what God has done. Na God ooo, no be man”, he declared in local parlance.

Uzoenyi, said while he gave the lasy award to his little son who was four years old the day Nigeria defeated Bafana Bafana 3-1, he was dedicating the latest award to God. “If not for God, how can a team recover from 3-0 to come back and win 4-3. It was only God that did it and I want Nigerians to hold fast to him for the betterment of their lives”, he said.

Morocco Captain Salutes Eagles Resilience …Team Relaxes In Cape Pool

Moroccan captain, Brahim El Bahri, has described the Super Eagles team at the ongoing CHAN African Nations tourney as one of the best teams he has had to face in his playing career, even as he tipped the Nigerian side for victory.

Speaking at the end of the hair raising encounter between both sides, Bahri, said Nigerians simply refused to give up even when they thought they had won the match, and at the end of the day their indomitable spirit won it for the Super Eagles.

Bahri said the team has learnt quite a lot from their performance in South Africa and will now go back to the drawing board to prepare for the 2015 African Cup of Nations which Morocco will host. “The lessons are great and we will see how far we can go to win the confidence of the people and regain our selves for Afcon 2015, which we will host in Morocco. We are sure we will go very far in the tournament”, he declared.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles had an early morning splash at their Garden Court Hotel abode before their departure for Bloemfontein, for the semi-final encounter. All the players led by Assistant Coach, Dan the Bull Amokachi swam and had every exciting moment at the pools for nearly two hours, just to relax the nerves of the encounter against Morocco. “It was good but I never made any mistake of going to the deep part of the pool after my experience in Niger Republic”, Ejike Uzoenyi said.
