Angola hold Eagles in Pretoria

Angola’s Palancas Negras held the Super Eagles B to a 1-1 draw in a pre-African Nations Championship friendly in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Midfield Trojan Paul Onobi was an early substitute as he sustained a knock in the 35th minute and was replaced by U-23 ace Usman Mohammed.

The Negras, silver medallists at the 2nd African Nations Championship in Sudan five years ago, tried to pile pressure on the Eagles in the second half, but five substitutions made by Coach Sunday Oliseh kept the 2014 bronze medallists in the ascendancy.

Nigeria took the lead in the 84th minute when Ibrahim Attah Salau was upended in the Angolan box, with midfielder Bartholomew Ibenegbu making no mistake from the spot.

FCT SWAN Salutes D’Tigers

The FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, has congratulated Nigeria senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, for lifting the 2015 AfroBasket trophy and also qualifying for the basketball event of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Chairman of the body, Kayode Adeniyi said all SWAN members in Abuja are full of joy for the D’Tigers and the leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF, for emerging as African champions.

“We really rejoice with D’Tigers and the NBBF board for spearheading the team that brought back basketball glory to Nigeria. We congratulate them and the entire basketball family in Nigeria.”

Nigeria beat Angola 74-65 in the Final of AfroBasket 2015 in Rades, Tunisia on Sunday to claim their first-ever continental championship.

In being crowned African champions, Nigeria also qualified for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Meanwhile, second-place Angola joined third and fourth place Tunisia and Senegal in booking their places for the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

Seychelles, Mauritius Lament Nigeria’s Absence At ITTF African Junior Championships

Contingents from Seychelles and host – Mauritius are not happy that Nigeria will not be present at the ITTF Africa Junior and Cadet Championships (AJC), which served off on Wednesday April 8 in Mauritius.

Coaches of Seychelles and Mauritius lamented that the absence of the West Africa giant will surely deny the tournament the expected glamour envisaged.

Nine teams including Nigeria’s arch-rival Egypt will compete for the 11 titles at stake in the competition.

Other teams listed for the tournament are Seychelles, South Africa, Algeria, Madagascar, Tunisia, Morocco, Angola and host – Mauritius.

Coach Jimmy Vel of Seychelles said the inability of Nigeria to be part of the tournament will give Egypt the chance to mop up all the titles.

He however took solace in the fact that the tournament would help his players to improve their game.

“I don’t know why a nation like Nigeria will not be at this tournament considering their contribution to the sport in the continent and worldwide. There is no doubt that their inability to be part of this year’s AJC has indeed denied the competition the expected glamour and excitement that the team is known for. We in Seychelles wanted to come here and learn from nations like Nigeria because to me they are the best. But not seeing them here alone psychologically has affected most of the teams. My players have been asking whether Nigeria is coming because some of them are fans of Aruna Quadri and they are eager to see his compatriots perform in Mauritius,” Vel said.

For the Coach Patrick Sahajasein of Mauritius, the absence of Nigeria has really dampened the spirit of his team for the AJC.

Sahajasein, who is familiar with the quality of Nigerian players said they are all looking forward to seeing the team in Mauritius.

“I know that if Nigeria has been here, Egypt will not be having a field day at the AJC. It is disappointing that Nigeria is not coming and even before the commencement of the tournament, the feeling among all the participating teams is that the tournament is for Egypt to win. But this will not discourage my players from giving their best because from what I saw at the WJC, the Egyptians are beatable,” Sahajasein said.

Mark Mentors started it campaign on a bright note when it pip Abidjan Basket Club of Cote d’Ivoire in it group-B opening game by 68-65 points last Thursday only to succumbed to the defending champion Agosto by 88-74 points on Friday and lost again to Etoile Sportive Rades basketball club of Tunisia by a single digit of 73-65 points a pointer that the Coach Peter Ahmedu tutored Nigerian side can still make it to the knock-out stage if it raises it game against the Tunisian and Congolese sides.

Angola and Zimbabwe men teams proceed to the second phase (Zonal) at CAVB Continental Cup Pool 11 of the Sub- Zonal phase December 5 to 7, 2014 at the DTS Beach Volleyball Arena in Olympia over 3 days in a country vs country competition.

Zambia had a last minute withdrawal from the Olympic Qualifier competition.

Powerhouses Angola, No 2 on the African Continent, showed their skill by beating both Namibia and Zimbabwe moving top of the group in both genders.

In the men’s competition it was a hard fight for second place between Namibia and Zimbabwe. Namibia’s no 1 team, Tin Hlupic/Brendon de Jager lost both their matches, while the no 2 team, Roman von Ludwiger/Jan Eric Sack, beat Zimbabwe’s no 1 team, Takawira/Sibanda in 2 sets. Zimbabwe’s no 2 team, Choto/Sibangani was then too strong for von Ludwiger/Sack, which resulted in a 3-1 defeat for the Namibian men. An injury by von Ludwiger made it impossible for Namibia to beat Angola as Namibia had to forfeit 2 matches. Hlupic/de Jager lost both their matches against Angola’s teams, losing out on the qualification for the next round as only the top 2 countries qualify.

In the Women’s competition both Namibia and Angola had no problems to overcome Zimbabwe in straight matches to meet in the match for top of the log.

Namibia’s no 1 team Simone von Wietersheim/Rosi Hennes took Namibia to the lead by beating Angola’s no 2 team Alburquerque/Cardosa in straight sets. Angola’s no 1 team, Kunga/Magalhaes showed their exceptional skill and made sure to move 2-1 ahead by beating both Namibias no 1 and no 2 team. It was all up to Namibia’s second team, Juniors Kim Seebach/Stephanie Palmhert to beat Angola’s no 2 team to equalize.

In a thrilling match Angola won the first set and with the support of the local spectators Seebach/Palmert fought back to win the second set. In the third set tie break the Namibian Junior team were quickly running behind and could not manage to keep up with the experienced Angolan team, losing the set 15-8, giving Angola the overall victory. As runners up Namibia’s ladies have therefore qualified for the next round, which will be held between April and September 2015, and the teams will most probably meet the qualified teams from the other sub zonal group, South Africa and Mozambique.

“The competition went very well, except for the rain that disturbed play on Saturday”, says Heiko Kesselmann, who is Director of Beach Volleyball in Namibia and local organizer of this competition. “Next year we have to continue to train hard in order to survive the next group phase”, added James Verrinder, Namibia’s National Coach.
