Kenya Overwhelm Egypt In Zone 5 All Africa Games Volleyball Qualifiers

Kampala, Uganda, April 22, 2015- Kenya issued a statement of intent at the Zone V All Africa Games Qualifiers when they defeated Egypt 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20) at the MTN Arena in Kampala, Uganda on Tuesday.

Kenya took early control of the game with a 25-16 lead after Egypt faltered on the back court defence. Monica Biama, Ruth Jepngetich and Edith Mukuvulani didn’t only show their attacking prowess but were vital on net defence.

Biama’s reception and court cover with libero Elizabeth Wanyama provided good cover. With Kenya trailing 14-11 in the second set, Jepngetich had back to back killing blocks, moments later Egypt’s Aya Shams attacked out (14-12), With Kenya leading 15-14, captain Janet Wanja served to the net (15-15) while Mohamed Doaa served out to give Kenya the advantage again, 15-15. Moments later, Kenya surrendered a three point lead 15-18 as Lydia Maiyo had a quiet evening: She rarely troubled the Egyptians.

Egypt got to the 20-point mark as Kenya’s reception deserted them. Trailing 19-21, coach David Lung’aho brought on Noel Murambi for Jepbgetich, but that didn’t stop the Egyptian attack and cover to operate (20-23). Esther Wangeci served in the net (20-23) before Mercy Moim attacked out (20-24) and later Egypt leveled the game with a 25-21 win.

The third set was end-to-end as Kenya tried to gain the lead, but were also let down by Wanja’s short in position two that Egypt on so many occasions used as a scapegoat. Egypt led by one (16-15) going into the second technical timeout of the set. Jepngetich faltered on her block, as on several occasions, net fouls by her were called by the first referee. Lung’aho substituted her for Biama.

Kenya were three points away from gaining the lead at 22-20 when Ramze Fazah hit out (23-20) Egypt pulled one back but good net defence from Mukuvulani made it 24-21. Amine Sara hit as Kenya gained the lead again 25-21.

The Wanja-led side was required to hold its nerves going into the fourth and they did as they built a five-point lead (13-8). It was excellent services and cover that frustrated the Egyptian reception and cover respectively.

The lead was later stretched to eight (20-12) and from then on, won the set 25-20. Kenya play Ethiopia today in their second game of the campaign as Uganda takes on Egypt.

Ugandan Vision Volleyball Camp players celebrating

At 32 years, Ugandan Vision Volleyball Camp’s (VVC) Josephine Nammanda is contemplating retirement from the sport. Actually 2015 could be her last season on the big stage.

Yet, her performance at the just-concluded Women’s African Club Championship in Cairo, Egypt is one that makes many believe she still has a lot to offer. Nammanda (56 points), Peace Busingye (66 points) and Zaina Kagoya (52 points) were the best performers in the six games VVC played on their way to finishing seventh out of 13 teams in the Cairo event.

That is the best ever position by any Ugandan club at the women and men’s championships combined. “After losing the first set against Injis below 15 points, we realised that our Ugandan version of volleyball wouldn’t take us anywhere,” Coach Hannington Nsubuga said. “And we needed to step up as a team, that’s when Jose (Nammanda) Zaina, and Peace decided to lead to by example,” he added. Nammanda top scored for VVC with 16 points with Busingye (13), Nabbuto (10) and Vivian Adeke (10) all managing double figures as they recovered from the first set setback to defeat Injis 3-1 (13-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-15) in their opening fixture.

Nammanda top scored with 14 points, four of those off the block, as she inspired VVC to a 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11) win over ARSU of Seychelles to make the last eight.

Nammanda’s nine points weren’t enough to see VVC past Al Shams in the quarterfinals but Busingye led in that encounter with nine as they lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-10).

VVC defeated Cameroonian outfit FAP 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24) to finish seventh overall with Nammanda managing 11 points, Nabbuto 13 and Busingye 16 as Kagoya led with 18 points.

Papua New Guinea Claims Top Prize In Pepsi ICC Development Programme Annual Awards 2014

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has taken the top prize in the Pepsi ICC Development Programme Annual Awards 2014, claiming the Best Overall Cricket Development Programme award.

PNG had a tremendous 2014, with its senior men’s team achieving One-Day International (ODI) status, while the PNG Women’s side qualified for its first ever ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier. This on-field success has, however, been underpinned by a highly successful domestic development programme that has resulted in significant participation growth over the past decade. There are now close to 200,000 cricket participants in PNG.

Keith Dennis, former chairman of Jersey Cricket Board, was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement award thanks to his efforts in developing cricket in Jersey dating back to the 1950’s. Mr Dennis sadly passed away during 2014 whilst supporting Jersey in its successful ICC World Cricket League Division 5 campaign.

The Spirit of Cricket Award was given to Thailand to acknowledge its work with underprivileged Hill tribe children and orphans in Northern Thailand, providing them with education alongside cricket activities.

This picture was taken during a coaching session at Villa 21/24 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This session was part of the ICC’s Social Responsibility Project - "Caacupe". The picture illustrates how cricket can be used as a tool for integration by bringing the sport to the underprivileged and providing them with options to maintain a healthy life. This particular picture shows an attempted run out in the streets of Barracas.

Argentina picked up the photo of the year award (see attached) for its photo capturing street cricket being played in Buenos Aires.

Other winners were Ahmad Feisal Tajuddin of the Malaysia Cricket Association, who won the Volunteer of the Year award thanks to his work growing cricket at all levels in Malaysia and Habib Mugalula from the Uganda Cricket Association who won the Women’s Cricket ‘Behind the Scenes’ award for her work developing Women’s cricket in Jinja, Uganda.

The judging panel featured ICC Chairman Mr Srinivasan and former Presidents Mr Alan Isaac and Mr Mustafa Kamal.

ICC’s Head of Global Development Tim Anderson said: “I’m pleased to be able to congratulate the 2014 Award winners who have all demonstrated incredible dedication to growing our sport. It’s particularly encouraging that PNG’s rise is being driven by outstanding local development structures, alongside strong local partnerships.”

“It’s also important to note the diversity of this year’s winners, who, together with the Associate Members who recently competed in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, are demonstrating the strength of cricket’s development outside its traditional territories.”

All Pepsi ICC Development Programme Annual Awards 2014 winners receive a cricket equipment grant to its national cricket body.

The prizes are as follows:

· Best Overall Cricket Development Programme ($5,000)
· Lifetime Service Award ($2,000)
· Volunteer of the Year ($2,000)
· Women’s Cricket Behind the Scenes Award ($2,000)

Coach Nsuguba Confident Uganda’s VVC Will Leave A Mark At Women’s African Club Champs

Since their inception last year, Uganda’s Vision Volleyball Camp’s (VVC) coach Hannington Nsubuga has publicly confessed that the team’s target is not only to compete locally but also internationally.

The NSSF Volleyball League and National Clubs Championship holders leave Wednesday evening for their maiden appearance at the African Clubs Championship in Cairo Egypt slated for March 26-April 5.

The team seems to be in fine form, they have lifted all the championship they have participated in with too much ease this year.

Of course riding on last year’s form that saw the club win nine title in 11 finals, VVC have this term defended the Joan Cox Memorial Championship and won the Ndejje Open last month.

VVC vs Ndejje
VVC vs Ndejje

Last weekend in Jinja they also defended the Jinja Open after defeating former superpower KAVC 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-14) in the finals.

“I believe the team is in fine form and in the right state of mind to compete,” Nsubuga told cavb.org after the final in Jinja.

“Playing at such an event will expose the team to ta totally new kind of volleyball and that should elevate us to greater heights,” he added.

VVC will be banking on players like Prossy Alobo, Shamim Makongoro and Peace Busingye who have played at this stage before.

Alobo played for Nkumba and Ndejje Elites in the past just like the latter two did with Ndejje.

“Those three should be able to help the team stand firmly since they know what to expect at this stage.”

But also Josephine Nammanda and Milly Laker boast of vast experience gained from their involvement with the national team since 2013.

VVC will be looking at emulating Ndejje who defied odds to reach the last eight of the competition in 2013 in Antananarivo Madagascar in their maiden appearance.

ONE MONTH TO GO – IAAF WORLD CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, GUIYANG 2015

There is little more than a month to go to the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Guiyang 2015 on Sunday 28 March when the spotlight will be shone on the Chinese city.

The oldest of the IAAF World Athletics Series competitions, this year’s event will be the 41st staging of the global cross-country contest. It will also be the third time the championships have been held in Asia, following the 2006 edition in Fukuoka and the 2009 event in Amman.

Preliminary entries suggest this year’s championships will be bigger than the past three editions. An expected 460 athletes from 56 countries are set to compete in Guiyang, surpassing the numbers from 2013 (400 athletes from 41 countries), 2011 (423 athletes from 51 countries) and 2010 (437 athletes from 51 countries).

On Sunday 28 March athletes will compete in four races over the conventional distances for the championships: senior men – 12km, senior women and junior men – 8km, junior women – 4km.

In 2013 Kenya won three of the four individual team titles, but seven nations made it on to the medals table; the last time more countries made it on to the podium was back in 2004.

Kenya has topped the medals table at the past four editions of the World Cross Country Championships, but throughout the years Ethiopia has proved to be their toughest opposition and that trend looks set to continue this year.

Uganda and Eritrea are also expected to pose a formidable threat, but the hunt for medals is not restricted to African countries. In 2013, USA took team silver in the senior men’s race, finishing ahead of Kenya. Meanwhile, Japan and Great Britain traditionally field strong teams in the junior women’s race and could challenge for a podium place.

The championship course, which is located in a mountainous area approximately 30km away from the city and is set in and around a horse racing circuit, is a well-known facility which since 2000 has hosted Asian and national cross-country championships.

The start and finish areas are situated in the flat centre of the horse racing circuit and benefit from permanent spectator tribunes. However, the vast majority of the course is undulating, set on and around the sides of a large hill which dominates one side of the track. With the addition of man-made obstacles, the course will be true test of endurance over a traditional cross-country running terrain.
