Gov’s Cup Lagos Tennis: Nigeria’s Paul upsets Mugabe, to battle S/A star in Quarterfinal

Nigeria’s Christian Paul battled his way to the quarter final of the 15th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship on Wednesday as he upsets Duncan Mugabe of Uganda in a second round match at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Paul, who is ranked number 2130 in the world shocked Mugabe, the 2014 finalist, who is ranked 1186 in straight set of 6-4, 6-4.

Paul was instrumental to Team Tombim’s winning of the NCC Team Tennis Cup at the same venue on Saturday, and his reward for the win over Mugabe, is a quarterfinal showdown with Llyod Harris of South Africa on Thursday. Harris, the number 3 seed, defeated David Pel of The Netherlands 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in their second round clash.

“I’m very happy to have played and defeated Mugabe, who is higher ranked than me. This has boosted my confidence that if I put in more effort I can make it in the competition this year,” said Paul, who played qualifying matches before making it to the Main Draws of the first leg (Futures 3) of the ongoing International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned tournament.

“I have come to realise that Nigerian players have the potential to make it big at the Governor’s Cup but we are faced with the problem of not playing circuits around the world to gain exposure and experience. I want to beg Nigerians to come to our aid by sponsoring some of us to play tournaments around the world,” he said.

Other Nigerians who played their second round matches Wednesday were not as lucky as Sylvester Emmanuel fell 6-2, 6-2 to number 2 seed Pere Riba of Spain. while top seed, Aidin Setkic of Bosnia crushed Albert Bikom in 6-1,6-0.

The Nigerian ladies also found the going tough as Ronke Akingbade and Osariemen Airhunmwunde were comprehensively beaten by number 6 seed, Ulrikke Eikeri from Norway and Frenchwoman Tessah Andrianjaftrimo 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-0 respectively.

In the women’s games, number 1 seed, France’s Sherazad Reix will battle Eikeri, Terziyska Julia will play against Andrianjaftrimo of France, Indianrarthana Thombare will keep a date with Conny Perrin of Switzerland as Tadeja Majeric of Slovakia will confront Ukraine’s Valeriya Strakhova.

“Uganda has many top boxers and I will prove it by putting Skoro where he belongs: On the canvass. Skoro is not an obstacle. I am the champion in waiting. 2016 Olympics Qualifiers Is Not Mission Impossible- Edward Pam Fom

The president of the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation, Sir Edward Pam Fom has assured Nigerians that the senior men’s national team will not disappoint Nigerians in South Africa as they seek their 1st ever Olympic ticket.

Fom told journalists that it will not be business as usual when the Black Stallions file out to represent Nigeria as he called for understanding.

According to him “This is a developing nation in rugby, this is a developing national team. At our very worst we are good and at our best, we can be dynamic”

“Nigerians should be patient with us, we hope to always churn out good results as we have always done”

Speaking before their departure for Johannesburg today for a 5 day training exercise before the competition slated for the 14th and 15th of November, the NRFF president thanked the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Dr Alhassan Yakmut for giving the federation an audience to discuss their plans and programs after which he promised to be fully supportive at every point in time.

Dipak Patel, the former New Zealand international and current Head Coach of Papua New Guinea hopes that his side can book its passage to India. “The PNG Garramuts are looking forward to the challenge in Kuala Lumpur. They have worked very hard in PNG with very limited resources and game-time.

One of the many players keen to make a positive mark and help his nation qualify for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is Ireland captain Jack Tector who is hopeful of a successful tournament in what he admits will be challenging conditions. “As a group we are massively excited for the tournament. A total of 350 players, 8 to 10 and 11-14 years old, took part in the two day training; about 400 people including players, coaches, teachers, and parents were involved in the event, which also provided some time for the National Federation to identify more strategies for implementing the project.

“Our major plan is to have these talents at an early age master the basics of the sport and we follow them up to high school,” said Karungi who led a team of coaches to St. James Primary School Nkumba Mpala for the training clinic.

“Yes we may have strong tall players, but there is no way we shall compete at international level when our boys don’t know the basics of volleyball at early age,” He added.

He explained the first beneficiary schools were identified because of their volleyball background and continued involvement in sports. “We looked at the active schools in Volleyball and we chose those that we felt could be assisted to improve on their performance,” Karungi added.

The Clinic had a great atmosphere as the participants and spectators had learnt some basic volleyball skills with included lead up games, the kids also played some 2 vs 2 and 4 Vs 4 matches.

It is also a defining moment for the Commonwealth Sports Movement, as we plan ambitiously for the future and develop and deliver Transformation 2022 in partnership with our members.”

Welcoming the delegation, Zambia’s Honourable Minister of Youth and Sport, Hon Vincent Mwale MP, said:

“African Commonwealth Games Associations have a vital role to play in achieving the Commonwealth Games Federation’s Strategic plan for 2022. The CGF provides a unique arrangement bringing diverse nations together for a common cause-sport.
