Sunshine Queens coach, Kayode Olujohungbe said he is “proud” to be in charge of the 2015 Nigeria Women Federation Cup champions after watching them beat Bayelsa Queens 3-1 in the finals at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The Bayelsa girls got the opener in the early second half through Patience Kalu but Sunshine Queens forward, Shola Oyewusi who came in for Tina Oyateleme in the 60th minutes scored the equaliser to end it 1-1.

And the game went straight to penalty shootout, Sunshine and Falcons keeper, Tochukwu Oluhie saved three to win the highly contested encounter 3-1 which made it the first major trophy for Ondo State since 1976.

“The girls made me proud as their head coach and I want to say congratulations to them and our fans.

“They were disciplined and determined on the pitch. We lost several scoring chances in the first half but with God, we were able to come back and equalise. Its a great display by the team.

“The girls are wonderful and good to win the first major trophy for the state under my care”, Olujohungbe said.

Also, Chairman, Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Akin Akinbobola hailed the wonderful spirit of the girls saying the team has made Mr. Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and good people of the state proud.

“I’m very proud of the girls and I’m sure the people of Ondo State will be happy. It’s a God win and well battle fought”.

….Tina Oyateleme Dedicates Golden Boot Award To God, Mum

Sunshine Queens FC attacking midfielder, Tina Oyateleme has dedicated her highest goal scorer award in the 2015 Nigeria Women Federation Cup to God and her mother, Mrs. Agnes Oyateleme.

She won the 2015 edition with three goals from all matches played in the competition.

The skillful player was quick to devote the award to her creator who has kept her moving in her promising career.

“I am happy for the award but most importantly happy for the team that we won the trophy for the first in the history of the state. I’m so happy to write my name in the history book of the state.

“I will like to dedicate the personal award to my creator; I owe Him everything in life and my mum who has been my source of inspiration and support.

“It is a great award for me and personally it is something very important as a player to achieve this award and I’m very proud and honoured to have received it”, she said.

Oyateleme also gave credit to her teammates saying that it was their contribution that made it possible.

“I don’t want to forget my teammates because without them it would have been difficult to get this award”.

At the league level, she also played a key role in ensuring that the Akure based team came second in their group.

Akwa United wins First Major Trophy… As Sunshine Queens Win Women’s Fed Cup

NPFL side Akwa United were crowned Champions of the Federations Cup after defeating their counterparts 2-1 in the Final at the main bowl of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The game started pretty slowly with both teams trying to size each other up, but it was Akwa United who drew the first blood when Namso Edo curled in a delightful free-kick to the left hand of Ekoi the Lobi stars Goalie who couldn’t make a save to put the Uyo team ahead in the game after 36 minutes. Akwa United would have doubled their lead in the first 45th if not for their lackluster nature in front of goal.

Lobi Stars expectedly, started the second half with so much intent as they looked to claw their way back into the game but it was not to be as MOTM award winner Abdulhafeez Awakan blasted home the second of the night off a corner kick, to further assure the fans of Akwa United that the federations cup will be going to Akwa Ibom.

Substitute Barnabas Imenga scored what proved to be a consolation goal as Lobi Stars lost out on a place to represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederations Cup.

Akwa United have now won their first major trophy since inception, and alongside Nassarawa United, they will now represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederations Cup.

It was also good news for people in Akure as Sunshine Queens on the back of their defeat last season to Rivers Angels, won this year Federations Cup women’s final with 3-1 via penalty kicks against Bayelsa Queens after they both played 1-1 after regulation time.

Crowd control has been a major issue in the recent Federations Cup Finals but this year was different entirely as all security agents alongside the LSFA worked assiduously to ensure Nigeria had a hitch free Federations Cup Final and also worthy winners.

“I thank God for the result, I needed the three points just for Rivers Angels to remain on top and I am happy”

“If I can get this kind of officiating, I learnt that people say that I and Stanley complain so much, we complain because we travel and we see a lot of things, am thanking goodness the media that is attached to this team, is one of the best thing that has happened to this team, Rivers Angels, if I’ve been complaining, at least the media can as well tell the truth, so I think if I can get this officiating just like what we saw here over there, I think we will still remain top of the table” Edwin Okon said.

Coach of Sunshine Queens, Kayode Olujohungbe on his part, faulted the penalty awarded to Rivers Angels

“Very fine game, both sides did well but the first goal you know wasn’t a fair penalty, in a million years that’s not a penalty but the second goal was okay, my goalkeeper was very careless, the second goal was fair, that was a good goal but the first goal, that was no penalty, so we lost concentration a bit, we would have equalized if we had concentrated more, so that dubious goal really destabilized us a bit but am not giving excuses” said the gaffer.

RIVERS ANGELS UNBEATEN RUN HALTED

A late penalty from former Rivers Angels player, Amenze Aighewi was all it took to end the 2014 Nigeria Women Football League champions seven matches unbeaten run in the NWFL as they lost 0-1 to Edo Queens in a rescheduled match day 5 clash.

The 2014 NWFL champions who came from a defeat to Confluence Queens in the quarter finals of the Federation Cup on Wednesday were almost leaving with a point when center referee Adeyemi Christiana from Ondo State pointed to the spot in the 90th minute after goalkeeper Bidemi Aluko was trying to clear a cross from defender Uju Joseph.

The visiting team had gone 1-0 up in the 16th minute through Rosemary Okezie but assistant referee ruled it off.

After the game, head coach of Edo Queens, Kenneth Aigbe expressed his delight

“I feel great because the players played to instructions and we’re playing a good side; Rivers Angels, they’re no push over at all, and the girls played to instruction, we need support for the girls so that they can step up their game,

Rivers Angels

Meanwhile head coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon had this to say on officiating:

“There’re people that threaten referees every year and as well the referees must as well do what they want, we can’t grow like this in female football, we can’t grow like this”

“Look at the penalty, look at the officiating, look at the ones we had, look at the ignorance, so they’re kill joys; you take time to train your team, take time to walk up your team but once you step into the pitch, the referees becomes the only player on the pitch, they decide whatever they want, so these ones are not even qualified to handle the female league”

“The league is dying; I am crying the league is dying, the referees that are into the league do not even qualify to even step on the side of the pitch, they don’t even qualify” lamented Okon.

Rivers Angels are now 2nd with 19 points on the league table with one outstanding match while Sunshine Queens top group B with 22 points.

NWFL TITLE: SLEEPING TIME IS OVER-OKON

Head coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon says his team has put the loss they encountered in the quarter finals of the Women’s Federation Cup against Confluence Queens on Wednesday behind them.

The six times federation cup holders hopes of clinching a double this year were shattered when they fell 2-1 to the Kogi based club, however coach of the Port Harcourt side said their attention is now on retaining the NWFL title.

Rivers Angels will be away to Edo Queens in a rescheduled week 5 game of the NWFL on Sunday.

The game which was earlier billed for Saturday was moved to Sunday due to Bendel Insurance National League game same day.

“The Federation Cup has come and has gone and there’s no way we can repeat it this year, all we need is to forge ahead, that date will not come back again for the year or for the season, so our focus now is on the league”

“We’ve lost one of the trophies which is the FA Cup and we do hope by the grace of God that we’re back to the drawing board to see how we can as well defend the league and we wouldn’t want to sleep again so that what happened to us in Enugu will not happen to us” Okon said.

OKON: TOMORROWS GAME AS SERIOUS AS THE FINALS

Defending Champions of the Women’s Federation Cup title, Rivers Angels are ready to defend the title which they clinched last year when they defeated Sunshine Queens at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, by 2 goals to nothing.

The NWFL champions who so far have won this competition five consecutive times will be aiming to retain the cup as they lock horns with new comers, COD Ladies of Lagos in the round of 16 to book a place in the last eight of the oldest football competition.

Head Coach of the title holders and former coach of the senior women national football team, the Super Falcons, Edwin Okon has tagged tomorrow’s encounter as a crucial one for his team.

Okon in a chat with the media officer of the club said the tournament is one that springs up surprises and it will be taken with all seriousness.

“It’s a different ball game altogether, challenge cup is different from the league and I think we just need to approach the game with all amount of seriousness because anything can happen in football and as defending champion we just have to prepare ourselves, prepare our minds to make sure we defend the cup” said Okon.

“Especially the first match against COD, it’s too important to the team; we’ll not let the state down, we always put them first before every other thing, so we won’t let the state down and at that level, I think we only need the state, our fans to equally pray for the team in as much as I know the players and officials of the team will not let them down”

“So it’s the first match and it’s as serious as the finals” He added.

The game kicks off tomorrow by 2pm at the Area 3 Pitch in Abuja.
