Senegal Are New Champions Of Rugby Africa Cup 1B

A tedious game saw Senegal win Tunisia, even if they did not start as favourites for this Africa Cup final. Sadly the spirit and values of rugby were absent from this final. The Senegalese created a big surprise, for the enjoyment of Jean Marc Foucras, national team’s coach. He had just announced recently that this […]

Pinnick ecstatic as Nigeria U23 Team lifts U-23 Afcon trophy

NFF President Amaju Pinnick was in ecstasy on Saturday night after the U-23 National Team, won the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Dakar, Senegal.

“This is another reason to celebrate. We are delighted. But we give a lot of credit to the players and the officials led by Coach Samson Siasia. They showed exceptional perseverance and unyielding spirit to do the nation proud.

“The NFF as a Federation has special praise for Coach Siasia. He was strong mentally and never lost focus, even in the face of odds. He is deserving of every encomium.”

The triumph was the fourth major trophy in the 14-month life of the Amaju Pinnick administration, with the Super Falcons’ 2014 African Women Championship title, the Flying Eagles’ Africa U-20 Cup of Nations win in Senegal earlier in the year and the Golden Eaglets’ successful retention of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile in November being the others.

The Nigeria U23 Team had already made of sure of a place in the men’s football tournament of the 2016 Olympics before the final, when a well –placed penalty by Oghenekaro Etebo condemned host Senegal to defeat in Wednesday’s semi final at the same venue.

Nigeria’s player of the tournament, Etebo, set the Nigeria U23 Team on the way in Saturday’s final, with a goal from the penalty spot in the 14th minute. The forward himself had been double–teamed by two Algerian defenders but picked himself up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Algeria drew level in a most bizarre manner, when Nigerian defender Segun Oduduwa headed past his own goalkeeper and into the net from a delicate pull–out by an Algerian forward in the 31st minute.

Etebo, who rained shots at the Algerian goal from every angle, was strong and purposeful all through, and five minutes to interval, picked up the ball in the centre circle and ran past a horde of Algerian defenders before firing low into the net past the Algerian goalkeeper.

In the 69th minute, the brilliant Nigeria goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel saved his second penalty in as many matches. After foiling Sory Keita in the first half of Wednesday’s semi final, Daniel again rose to the occasion to stop Algeria’s dangerman Ferhat after Oduduwa, who had a game to forget, had fouled an Algerian striker in the box.

The Nigeria U23 Team weathered the expected final 20–minute onslaughts of the North Africans very well, even creating chances of their own, and were fully worth the African title at the end.

NFF 1st Vice President, Barr. Seyi Akinwunmi, who was also leader of delegation when the U-20 boys lifted the African title in Senegal in March, was among the dignitaries at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor on Saturday night.

South Africa picked the third African ticket, condemning host Senegal to misfortune with 3-1 penalty shoot–out defeat in the third place match.

Pinnick Tells U-23 Boys To Take No Prisoners

NFF President Amaju Pinnick has charged players of the Nigeria U-23 squad to fire from all cylinders when they clash with hosts Senegal in the first semi final of the 2nd Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Dakar on Wednesday.

Head Coach Samson Siasia believes his boys improved in their last game against Algeria by not conceding a goal, but Pinnick wants the players to show no mercy when launching onslaughts and do everything to keep the rearguard tight against the rampaging Senegalese.

Both teams clashed at the men’s football event of the 11th All-Africa Games in Brazzaville in September, with Nigeria scoring a last –minute goal to tie the match 1-1.

“It is not going to be easy playing against the host nation that is high on confidence, having won all their three group phase matches. Extra effort will be needed in all departments; hardwork and courage are critical virtues that the U-23 boys must take to heart on Wednesday.

“Our country is on a run of excellent results in international competitions. We are determined that run must continue and that is why the U-23 boys must defeat Senegal to assure of a place in Rio de Janeiro next year.”

Nigeria, 1996 champions and 2008 vice champions, missed the 2012 Olympics as Coach Austin Eguavoen’s Class of 2011 lost out at the inaugural Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Siasia’s group will miss team captain Azubuike Okechukwu, who is suspended after receiving a second yellow card in the game against Algeria on Saturday. But Siasia says there is no reason to panic.

“We would have loved to have Azubuike because he is the captain and a big motivator, and you have to have a leader on the field. But he’s suspended, so we have to live with that. There is no need crying over spilt milk. In life, you always have to make adjustments in several areas. Azubuike’s absence will give another player the opportunity to prove himself.”

He added: “We are not going back home empty –handed; it’s no retreat, no surrender. We have to get ourselves ready for tomorrow’s game; it’s going to be a difficult one. It’s going to be eleven players against eleven, so we have our chances to qualify.”

Reacting on his rearguard that has conceded four goals in three games, Siasia said: “We have learnt our lessons. Two games in which the first half looked good and the last half didn’t. We made our corrections and you can see from how we played in the last game.” Coach Siasia added that for now, he is using FIFA U-17 World Cup sensation Victor Osimhen sparingly, so that the boy doesn’t get consumed by the occasion.

Wednesday’s clash will take place at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor, where Siasia scored Nigeria’s first goal in a 2-1 defeat of host Senegal in the opening match of the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations.

CCSF Tournament To Be Considered As WTF G-1 Event

The annual Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) International Taekwondo Opens may become a World Taekwondo Federation may (WTF) Grade 1 event in 2016.

With this status, the tournament would become a point hauling event for athletes across the globe as taekwondists are expected to use the tournament to up their world ranking.

Being the first tournament in Africa to use the electronic head gear, the CCSF championship has continued to attract the best fighters on the continent with countries like Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger Republic, Togo, Cameroun and Senegal taking part in this year’s tournament.

Efforts are on by the organizers of the CCSF Open to apply for the status from the world taekwondo ruling body.

Mali’s Golden Star, Karamoko Soumare, stands heads above Silver Medallist, Temitope Oyo [Nigeria National Team] and Bronze Medallists, Sunday Onofe [Nigeria National Team] and [MALI] during the medal ceremony for the +80kg category at the just concluded 3rd CCSF Opens
Mali’s Golden Star, Karamoko Soumare, stands heads above Silver Medallist, Temitope Oyo [Nigeria National Team] and Bronze Medallists, Sunday Onofe [Nigeria National Team] and [MALI] during the medal ceremony for the +80kg category at the just concluded 3rd CCSF Opens

For the best athlete of this year’s tournament, Mali’s Karamoko Soumare (+80kg), attending the tournament has really exposed him to world class equipment which would aid him in subsequent tournaments.

“Having attended series of tournament across Africa, I realized that CCSF tournament stands out in terms of organization and quality of equipment. The atmosphere was also superb. Being my first time of taking part in the competition, I think the knowledge I acquired would be helpful to me in other international tournaments and I look forward to taking part in more CCSF tourneys,” the Malian star said.

Soumare who won gold in the men’s heavyweight category believes the quality of athletes in Nigeria is enormous while blaming their under-achievement on lack of exposure of most of their athletes. “I respect Nigerian athletes particularly with the pedigree of their athletes, but they have not been able to use this to their advantage at international tournaments. We attend a lot of international tournaments but I hardly see Nigerians competing and this has really affected their rating globally. But attending international competition is vital for any nation to improve her athletes,” he added.

Also silver medalist at the CCSF Opens, Cameroun’s Kamgue Silvre hailed the organizers for putting the colourful tournament together, which he described as a world class championship. “I am surprised with the quality of organization as well as the atmosphere which is of international standard. I am indeed looking forward to the next edition because I have been able to up my skills as well as improve my rating among the best fighters in Africa. Winning silver will surely improve my chance of representing my country at the Olympics qualifiers come 2016. When the tournament gets the WTF G-1 rating, I believe more athletes within and outside Africa will be part of the tournament,” Kamgue, winner of the fair play award said.

“I am convinced beyond any doubt that CCSF has done a lot to promote and develop taekwondo in Nigeria. For us at the NSC, we want to partner organizations like this because they are doing things that are in line with our vision. The atmosphere at this year’s tournament is what obtains globally in terms of international standard and I don’t think any reasonable person will not be impressed with what they have seen here tonight. Apart from the tournament, they have had workshops and other developmental activities to support the upcoming athletes. With this, NSC will be entering into a four-year strategic partnership with CCSF to champion the development and promotion of taekwondo which is an Olympic sport in Nigeria. So from 2016, the collaboration will take off with NSC fully supporting the foundation in all its activities,” Alhassan said.

Mali, Others Arrive As 3rd CCSF International Taekwondo Open Begins In Abuja

Power house in taekwondo in Africa, Mali, Togo and Niger Republic are among the first teams to arrive as the city of power, Abuja comes alive for the 3rd Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) International Opens which begins on Saturday October 24.

The Malian team was the first foreign continent to arrive for the two-day tournament while Togo and Niger Republic have also continued their training in Abuja in readiness for the competition while others are expected to arrive on Friday October 23.

Also, the invited World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)-certified referees from Kenya, Egypt, Ghana, Niger Republic, Mali and Senegal are expected to arrive on Friday for the draw.

Registration of athletes commenced on Thursday October 22 at the Korean Cultural Centra in Abuja.

Over 300 athletes across Africa and Nigeria are taking part in the competition with Olympics equipment expected to be deployed for the tournament.

“At this year’s CCSF Open, there are lots of innovation and first is the technology being used – the Daedo Electronic Head Gear. The 1st edition of this tournament was the first tournament ever in Nigeria to use the Daedo Electronic Body gear, which inspired all other tournaments to follow suit in Nigeria. Now this will be the first event in Africa to use the Electronic Head Gear.

This gear was not even used in the just concluded All Africa Games. Thus, the fact that we are using the latest technology is a huge pull for Africa countries, especially given the fact that the Olympic qualification tournament to be held in February 2016 in Morocco will be using this same equipment,” said the founder of CCSF, Chika Chukwumerije.

CCSF. Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation, taekwondo

To make the tournament a mixture of sports and entertainment, the Beijing 2008 Olympics medalist said: “The entire ambience of the competition venue will be such that persons who have never seen or done taekwondo before will have a lot to talk about long after the event is finished. The ambience of diversity of activities planned around the hall will be major talking point for spectators and participants alike.”

According to the triple Olympian, “This event has been designed to be a truly unique sports entertainment event, as against being just a taekwondo event. Other events planned to run concurrently is a mini table tennis event, and a Play Station 4 FIFA Football event to make it a truly family event. It would be capped off with a musical concert on the third day that would take place alongside an award ceremony for the medalists.”
