World Series of Boxing Regular Season Week 12 (10.04.2015): Preview

Can Morocco Atlas Lions make it three wins in a row against China Dragons?

Morocco Atlas Lions host China Dragons in week 12 of the World Series of Boxing (WSB), and though neither team are likely to reach the knockout stages of the competition, there are boxers competing who are capable of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games through WSB.

The Moroccan team will be full of confidence after winning their last two matches, while China Dragons defeated Morocco in week five of the competition.

Hyatt Regency, Casablanca is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Friday 10th April fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 22:00 (GMT +1) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

All eyes will be on Morocco’s Mohammed Rabii in Casablanca, as the undefeated 5-0 star is second in the Welterweight (69 kg) rankings, and on the cusp of qualifying for Rio 2016.

The African boxer is one point behind top placed Radzhab Butaev, but five points ahead of Ireland’s third ranked Steven Donnelly in the Welterweight rankings, which means a home win here will make him a huge favourite to reach Rio.

His penultimate match of the Regular Season comes against China’s 1-2 Liu Wei who beat Britain’s Haizel Ekow Tabiri-Essuman in his last match.

Rabii has been one of the best boxers in Season V of WSB however, and has already beaten the likes of Marvin Cabrera and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo in the competition.

Moroccan Flyweight (52 kg) Achraf Kharroubi is ranked fifth in his weight class, but is only two points behind the second placed Jeyvier Cintrón Ocasio.

With two Olympic quotas available for Flyweights, the 3-2 Kharroubi can stay in the qualification mix if he defeats China’s 1-1 Chang Yong at home.

0-1 Lightweight (60 kg) Hamza Rabii then meets 0-2 Dragon Wang Lei, while Dutch Light heavyweight (81 kg) Peter Mullenberg looks for his second successive WSB win against China’s Aolin Zhang.

The night closes with a Super heavyweight (91+ kg) battle between 1-2 home star Abouhamada Abdeljalil and 19-year-old Chinese debutant Haipeng Mu.

Commanding Cuba Domadores and Masterful Mexico Guerrero meet in Havana

Two of the form teams in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) meet this week in Havana as Cuba Domadores face Mexico Guerreros.

Season IV Champions Cuba have won all of their eleven fixtures in this campaign, while the Mexican Franchise are on a six match winning streak.

While there is plenty of team glory to be had, there is also individual success ahead for many fighters appearing, as this is the penultimate match for these weight classes in the Regular Season.

With Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification in sight for those competing in this fixture, the concentration levels and hard work will be at an all time high.

Ciudad Deportiva, La Habana is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Friday 10th April fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:30 (GMT -4) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Cuba’s Yosbany Veitia is the number one ranked Flyweight (52 kg) in WSB, and will qualify for Rio 2016 if he defeats Mexico’s fourth ranked Orlando Huitzil Ahuatl.

Mexico Guerreros vs Morocco Atlas Lions
Mexico Guerreros vs Morocco Atlas Lions

Veitia is 5-0 this season, and is six points ahead of Puerto Rico’s Jeyvier Cintrón Ocasio who is his nearest rival.

The Cuban is also eight points ahead of third ranked Brent Venegas III, and his Mexican opponent, which means if he succeeds here then nobody will be able to catch him in the last match of the Regular Season.

Orlando Huitzil Ahuatl is a very tough competitor however, and is on a three fight winning streak with his lone loss a split decision defeat against Vasiliy Vetkin.

Mexico’s exciting star knows that if he loses then his Olympic dreams are all but over, so the opening match of the night is one of the most important of the entire WSB weekend.

5-0 Cuban Lightweight (60 kg) Lazaro Alvarez sits second in his weight class rankings three points behind Albert Selimov, but crucially four points ahead of Algeria’s Reda Benbaziz.

A victory for Alvarez against Mexico’s 0-1 William Zepeda Segura will ensure that his destiny remains in is his own hands ahead of the last match of the Regular Season.

Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo is a current Olympic Games gold medalist, but the Welterweight (69 kg) has lost his last two WSB matches.

The 2-2 fighter faces another tough contest this week with Mexico’s 1-0 Héctor Andrés Reyes Anguiano his opponent.

Julio Cesar La Cruz has been one of the most dominant boxers in Season V of WSB, and the Domadores is on course to qualify for Rio 2016 through WSB.

Ranked joint-first at Light heavyweight (81 kg) after five straight victories, La Cruz is level on points with Italian Valentino Manfredonia and two points ahead of third ranked Croatian Hrvoje Sep.

He will meet one of his toughest opponents of the season in Havana, as Ecuador’s 2-0 Carlos Mina takes to the ring.

Mina has won both of his matches at home this season, but the entertaining Guerrero will have no fears in fighting the two-time AIBA World Champion away.

The last fight of the evening is at Super heavyweight (91+ kg) where third ranked 4-1 Lenier Eunice Pero battles 2-1 Mexican Edgar Ramirez.

Although Eunice Pero is unlikely to reach Rio 2016 via WSB due to only one Super heavyweight quota and the imposing form of Filip Hrgovic and Joseph Joyce, the Cuban must win to maintain any hopes of qualifying, and to help his Franchise defeat the mercurial Mexican team.

Who will return to victory when Ukraine Otamans and Algeria Desert Hawks meet?

WEEK 1 Match Ukraine Otamans vs Mexico Guerreros
WEEK 1 Match Ukraine Otamans vs Mexico Guerreros

Ukraine Otamans host Algeria Desert Hawks in a must win World Series of Boxing (WSB) match for both Franchises.

The European team have slipped to fourth in the Group A table, while Algeria have yet to win away from home this season.

Both teams are capable of brilliance, which makes this clash a very intriguing proposition.

Ukraine lost to African opposition in their last match as they were defeated by Morocco Atlas Lions, while this is Algeria’s second match in a week after they faced Russia on Tuesday night.

Additionally, this is the penultimate match in the Regular Season for the weight classes in action, so those in the hunt for Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification through WSB need to maintain their momentum.

Sports Palace, Kiev is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Friday 10th April fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 21:30 (GMT +3) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Algerian Lightweight (60 kg) Reda Benbaziz is on a four fight winning streak in WSB, and has never been beaten in the ring this season as his lone loss was a walkover defeat in week two of the competition.

Benbaziz is third in the Lightweight rankings, four points behind second placed Lazaro Alvarez and seven points behind top ranked Albert Selimov.

Only two Lightweights will reach Rio 2016 via WSB, so Benbaziz needs a victory against Ukrainian debutant Viktor Slavinskyi to keep his Olympic dreams alive.

The evening begins at Flyweight (52 kg) where Kyrgyzstan’s 2-2 Azat Usenaliev meets Algeria’s 0-3 Abdelhakim El Barka.

Usenaliev has won both of his home matches this season, while El Barka will be hoping to become the first Desert Hawk Flyweight to win in Season V.

1-2 Ukrainian Welterweight (69 kg) Oleg Zubenko then faces Algeria’s 2014 National Champion Zohir Kedache who makes his first appearance of the campaign for his Franchise.

Oleksandr Khyzhniak has achieved success in all three of his home matches this season for the Otamans, and the fourth ranked Light heavyweight (81 kg) competes against 1-3 Nabil Kassel in Kiev.

Although fourth in the Light heavyweight standings, Khyzhniak is nine points behind the top two fighters in the weight class, which means that even a win this weekend could see him lose his hopes of Olympic qualification through WSB.

The beauty of WSB however is that every match is important for the team, and his match against Kassel could be crucial on the night in terms of which Franchise ultimately proves victorious.

A Super heavyweight (91+ kg) fight closes proceedings in Ukraine as 1-1 Ihor Shevadzutskyi battles Algeria’s 0-2 Hamza Beguerni.

Olympic Dreams On The Line As British Lionhearts Host Russian Boxing Team

After defeating Algeria Desert Hawks on Tuesday night, Russian Boxing Team compete in their second match of the week as they face British Lionhearts in London.

This very important fixture will emanate from East London’s The Brewery in a special Black Tie event.

A resplendent audience at the venue will be treated to a wealth of excellent boxing headlined by British Super heavyweight (91+ kg) Joseph Joyce who is currently engaged in a ferociously tight battle to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games through WSB.

The Brewery, London is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Thursday 9th April fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:00 at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Joseph Joyce vs Leunier Eunice Pero (WSB Week 6)
Joseph Joyce vs Leunier Eunice Pero (WSB Week 6)

5-0 Joseph Joyce has been one of the most impressive boxers in all of WSB, and the power puncher has stopped three opponents so far in Season V.

Unlike the majority of the weight classes in the competition, only one Super heavyweight will qualify for Rio 2016 through WSB, and with just two matches to go, Joyce is a single point behind the number one ranked Filip Hrgovic.

The slight points discrepancy means that Joyce needs a convincing victory over Gasan Gimbatov to keep track with Hrgovic, but such a win may be difficult against the undefeated Russian fighter .

Radzhab Butaev tops the Welterweight (69 kg) rankings this season, and the 5-0 star could qualify for Rio if he achieves success in his penultimate match of the Regular Season.

With two Welterweight quotas for the Olympic Games available, Butaev is six points ahead of third ranked Steven Donnelly, which means that a win for the Russian star over British debutant Scott Fitzgerald could see him become the first man to reach Rio this season through WSB.

Fitzgerald is the reigning Welterweight Commonwealth Games gold medalist however, and the Lionheart will be keen to perform well in his WSB debut.

Joseph JOYCE (British Lionhearts)
Joseph JOYCE (British Lionhearts)

The action begins in London at Flyweight (52 kg) when 0-3 José Kelvin de la Nieve Linares meets 3-0 Vasiliy Vetkin.

Russia’s Vetkin has impressed in all three of his matches this season, while his Spanish opponent has been on the losing side of two split decision verdicts in recent weeks.

Oualid Belaoura has yet to find success for the Lionhearts in Season V, and the Lightweight (60 kg) will be keen to earn his first win of the campaign against 3-1 Adlan Abdurashidov.

The Russian Abdurashidov lost his last bout to Algeria’s Reda Benbaziz, so will be eager to return to winning ways in this bout.

British Light heavyweight (81 kg) Joshua Buatsi received a lot of plaudits despite losing his first WSB match against Peter Mullenberg via split decision, while his week 12 opponent is Pavel Silyagin, a split decision specialist who has won all three of his matches this season by that verdict.

Expect a close match between the two men in a match which could define the overall scoring of the evening.

WSB Regular Season Week 11: Results

Morocco Atlas Lions continue winning streak after home win over Ukraine Otamans

MOROCCO-ATLAS-LIONS_WSB

A classic in Casablanca eventually resulted in a second successive World Series of Boxing (WSB) victory for Morocco Atlas Lions after they defeated Ukraine Otamans 3-2.

Uzbekistan’s second ranked Light flyweight (49 kg) Hasanboy Dusmatov took his season record to 6-0, and put immense pressure on number one ranked Patrick Barnes after he won every round against Moroccan debutant Yassine Zaher.

Mohamed Hamout then evened up the scoring in the second fight of the night when he beat Ukraine’s 3-2 Mykola Butsenko.

Hamout won the first three rounds on every scorecard, before Butsenko was forced to pull out through injury in round four.

5-0 Uzbek Hurshidbek Normatov restored Ukraine’s lead on the night, and earned crucial points for himself in the Middleweight (75 kg) race for Rio.

After comprehensively outpointing 1-3 Atlas Lion Said Harnouf, Normatov keeps his Olympic hopes alive.

Morocco pulled back the scoring to 2-2 after Heavyweight (91 kg) Amine Azzouzi won by unanimous decision over Ukrainian debutant Arsenity Azizov.

The last fight of the night was at Light welterweight (64 kg), a divison Ukraine had failed to win a single match in this season, and where Morocco’s representative Hamza El Barbari had also lost all five of his outings throughout the campaign.

After over 20 rounds without a victory in Season V, El Barbari finally achieved success when he earned a unanimous points verdict against 0-2 Dmytro Grynchenko.

An emotional El Barbari was close to tears after the match, and he deserves all the platitudes after a remarkable performance.

Morocco Atlas Lions host China Dragons next week, while Ukraine Otamans welcome Algeria Desert Hawks.

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan magnificent in Miami as they defeat USA Knockouts

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan, WSB

An excellent away performance in Miami resulted in a 5-0 whitewash victory for Astana Arlans Kazakhstan against USA Knockouts.

This is Kazakhstan’s eleventh successive win in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) while the American team have now lost four of their last five matches.

The first bout of the evening was a close one, and had huge significance for the rest of the match,

Temirtas Zhussupov was awarded the fight on two scorecards by just one point, while American Light flyweight (49 kg) Joshua Franco edged the bout by a solitary point on the third card.

Meirbolat Toitov then temporarily headed to the top of the Bantamweight (56 kg) rankings after defeating USA’s Francisco Martinez on points.

Martinez began the weekend second in the Bantamweight rankings, and won the first round in Miami, but Toitov took control of the action from then on and sealed the victory.

The win for Toitov hugely increases his chances of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games via WSB, though with just one match of the Regular Season to go, Martinez may have lost his opportunity.

Kazakhstan’s win was secured at Light welterweight (64 kg) as Samat Bashenov moved up the WSB rankings when he earned a split decision verdict over Tyrek Irby.

Meiirim Nursultanov then moved to third in the Middleweight (75 kg) standings after beating American debutant Kalvin Henderson who displayed a lot of potential in their bout.

Nursultanov is just one point behind Arlen Lopez and Hurshidbek Normatov with one match to go for the Middleweights.

The closest division in WSB is the Heavyweight (91 kg) weight class, where only one fighter will qualify for Rio 2016 via the competition.

After Cuba’s Erislandy Savon won on points in China, Kazakh Vasiliy Levit sealed his sixth win of the campaign to stay level with the Domadore in the rankings.

For the first time this season Levit went the distance with an opponent, as USA’s Adrian Taylor performed well in the first and last rounds.

In two weeks time the Olympic qualification for all of these weight classes will be determined, and the mayhem in Miami has set everything up perfectly for an entertaining end.

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan visit Puerto Rico Hurricanes next week, while USA Knockouts meet Azerbaijan Baku Fires.

Mexico Guerreros clinch sixth successive win after beating Russian Boxing Team

WSB, Mexico Guerreros defeat British Lionhearts in London
WSB, Mexico Guerreros defeat British Lionhearts in London

A superb home performance in Aguascalientes resulted in a 3-2 victory for Mexico Guerreros over Russian Boxing Team.

This was the sixth straight victory for Mexico in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), while Russia slip to their second consecutive defeat.

Mexican Light flyweight (49 kg) Joselito Velázquez Altamirano enjoyed his fifth win of the season by convincingly outpointing 3-1 Vasilii Egorov.

4-0 Russian Vladimir Nikitin was on the right side of a split decision verdict after his Bantamweight (56 kg) bout with Sergio Alfredo Chirino Sánchez, despite losing the majority of the first two rounds.

The win for Nikitin moves him up the Bantamweight rankings, while Sánchez will take heart from pushing a very accomplished boxer very close.

Third ranked WSB Light welterweight (64 kg) Raúl Curiel García then won his fifth match of Season V to stay in the hunt for Rio 2016 Olympic qualification via WSB.

After snapping the undefeated streak of Vitaliy Dunaytsev, the Mexican star is now just one point behind Vincenzo Mangiacapre and Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev with a single match to go in the Regular Season.

Russia’s Petr Khamukov is perhaps pound for pound the most powerful puncher in WSB, and the Middleweight (75 kg) earned his fourth successive stoppage victory when he finished Mexican debutant Héctor Octavio Aguirre Martínez in round four of their bout.

Khamukov’s win not only evened up the scoring on the night for his team, but it also kept him in touch with the top ranked Middleweights in the competition.

The Guerreros eventually achieved their 3-2 success at Heavyweight (91 kg) when 2-0 Julio Cesar Castillo gave Evgeny Tishchenko his first loss of the season.

Mexico Guerreros next travel to Cuba Domadores, while Russian Boxing Team host Algeria Desert Hawks.

Buoyant British Lionhearts seal away win against Algeria Desert Hawks

WSB, Desert Hawks, ALGERIA

British Lionhearts enjoyed their first away victory of Season V in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) as they defeated Algeria Desert Hawks 3-2 in Blida.

Harvey Horn won his first WSB match in the opening bout as he outpointed Algerian Light flyweight (49 kg) Zoheir Toudjine.

Lionheart Bantamweight (56 kg) Sean McGoldrick then became the first Welsh boxer to achieve a victory this season with a split decision win over Fahem Hammachi.

McGoldrick won the fight by a single round according to two judges, while the third awarded it to Hammachi.

The overall British victory was secured at Light welterweight (64 kg) when Samuel Maxwell earned his fourth win of the campaign as he edged another split decision verdict against Ahmed Boudiaf.

Algeria’s Boudiaf won the first round, but Maxwell responded well and did enough to impress two of the watching judges at ringside.

A third split decision occurred in the fourth fight of the evening, and this time home star Ilyas Abbadi upset Britain’s highly rated 3-2 Anthony Fowler.

Although one judge gave every round to Fowler, the other two felt that Abbadi had won by a single point.

The last fight of the night saw Desert Hawk Samir Maslouh enjoy his first WSB win against Aboulaye Diane at Heavyweight (91 kg).

Italia Thunder masterful in Milan after thrashing Argentina Condors 5-0

Argentina Condors vs Puerto Rico Hurricanes
Argentina Condors vs Puerto Rico Hurricanes

An excellent performance in Milan from Italia Thunder resulted in a 5-0 whitewash victory over Argentina Condors.

Ireland’s Patrick Barnes has been one of the best boxers in the entire World Series of Boxing (WSB) this season, and the Thunder representative won his sixth fight of the campaign against Junior Zarate.

Barnes won every round in the match, and remains at number one in the Light flyweight (49 kg) rankings with just one bout to go.

The Irish star is two points ahead of nearest rival Hasanboy Dusmatov who also won this weekend, and if Barnes wins his last match of the Regular Season he is all but guaranteed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Another Irish fighter who has put himself in position to reach Rio through WSB is Michael Conlan, who moved to second in the Bantamweight (56 kg) rankings after dominating Argentina’s 0-3 Ignacio Perrin.

Two Bantamweights will qualify for the Olympic Games, and after Francisco Martinez lost on Friday night, Conlan will be confident of his chances to compete in Rio next year.

Italy’s Vincenzo Mangiacapre is also on the cusp of Olympic qualification, and his win over Ronan Nahuel Sanchez took him back to the top of the Light welterweight (64 kg) rankings.

Mangiacapre’s victory also secured the overall success for Italy which is important for their chances of qualifying from Group B.

Another Italian triumph took place at Middleweight (75 kg) when Raffaele Munno outpointed Christian Zarate.

The Thunder whitewash was confirmed in the last bout of the evening as Italian Heavyweight (91 kg) Fabio Turchi beat Dario Alcapan.

Italia Thunder host Rafako Hussars Poland next, while Argentina Condors welcome Caciques Venezuela.

Azerbaijan Baku Fires defeat Rafako Hussars Poland 3-2 in Gdansk

An enthralling, tense and fascinating World Series of Boxing (WSB) battle in Gdansk was eventually won by Azerbaijan Baku Fires who defeated Rafako Hussars Poland 3-2 in Gdansk.

Although the Polish Franchise narrowly missed out on the overall victory, they displayed their excellent potential against the Season IV runners-up.

Poland’s Dawid Sebastian Jagodzinski enjoyed his second win of the season at Light flyweight (49 kg) as he beat Rasul Saliyev on points.

Azerbaijan bounced straight back at Bantamweight (56 kg) when Magomed Gurbanov achieved his fifth consecutive WSB victory over Sylwester Kozlowski.

The Pole won the first round against the top ranked Bantamweight, but Gurbanov’s class shined as the bout progressed.

With just one match to go in the Regular Season, Gurbanov is well on course to qualify for Rio 2016 through WSB.

Light welterweight (64 kg) Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev is also a favourite to reach Rio via this competition, and the WSB veteran lived up to his high ranking with a supreme win against Damian Tadeusz Kiwior.

Just one point separates the top three Light welterweights, and second placed Gadzhialiyev has his destiny in his own hands.

The Middleweight (75 kg) division is even closer, as one points separates the top four fighters in the weight class.

Poland’s third ranked 5-1 Tomasz Jablonski kept his Rio chances alive as he defeated Jaba Khositashvili via split decision.

Two judges awarded Jablonski every round of the fight, while the third had Khositashvili winning by a point.

Jablonski’s win evened up the scoring in Gdansk, and with just one match to go in the Regular Season for the Middleweights, he remains in the hunt for Olympic qualification.

The Baku Fires ultimately secured their fifth triumph in six WSB matches at Heavyweight (91 kg) after third ranked Abdulkadir Abdullayev stopped Rain Karlson in round two of their bout.

Rafako Hussars Poland travel to Italia Thunder next, while Azerbaijan Baku Fires host USA Knockouts.

Caciques Venezuela continue impressive home form with win over Puerto Rico Hurricanes

A marvelous World Series of Boxing (WSB) American derby in Maiquetía was won by the South American Franchise Caciques Venezuela 3-2 over Puerto Rico Hurricanes.

This was Venezuela’s fifth home win of the Regular Season, and they will be delighted in the manner of the victory.

Yoel Finol enjoyed his fourth win of the season at Light flyweight (49 kg) after dominating every round against Anthony Chacon Rivera.

The Hurricanes evened up the scoring in the second fight of the night when Bantamweight (56 kg) Hector Luis Garcia Mora defeated José Vicente Azocar.

Venezuelan Light welterweight (64 kg) Luis Arcón then outpointed Jan Rivera which enabled his team to retake the lead.

2-0 French Middleweight (75 kg) Christian M’Billi Assomo enjoyed his second successive stoppage in the competition when he stopped Jose Endry Saavedra Pinto in round four of their bout.

M’Billi Assomo has been a superb acquisition for Puerto Rico, and his star is shining after another impressive performance.

Heavyweight (91 kg) Alfonso Flores secured Venezuela’s fifth home win of the campaign by stopping Gabriel Richards in the third round of their meeting.

Caciques Venezuela next visit Argentina Condors, while Puerto Rico Hurricanes host Astana Arlans Kazakhstan.

WSB Regular Season Week 11 (28.03.2015): Previews

Algeria Desert Hawks and British Lionhearts battle for success in Blida

WSB, Desert Hawks, ALGERIA

The bottom two teams of Group A in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) compete in an important match which could ultimately determine who suffers the wooden spoon at the end of the Regular Season.

Algeria are the eighth and last team in the group, but have competed in one less match than seventh placed British Lionhearts who have lost all five of their away matches this season.

Week four of the campaign was the last time the British Franchise won a WSB match, a 4-1 victory against Algeria in London.

Chalane Hocine, Blida is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Saturday 28th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 19:00 (GMT +1) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

The action begins at Light flyweight (49 kg) where both Algeria and Britain have failed to win a match in the weight class this season.

0-2 Desert Hawk Zoheir Toudjine meets 0-1 Harvey Horn in a fight which could shape the rest of the evening.

Fahem Hammachi makes his first appearance of the season at Bantamweight (56 kg) for Algeria, but will he win against Lionheart Sean McGoldrick?

McGoldrick will hope to become the first Welsh fighter to win in Season V, and the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist achieved three victories in Season III of the competition.

Britain’s 3-2 Samuel Maxwell responded well to losing two WSB matches in a row by putting on his best performance of the season two weeks ago against Ukraine’s Mger Oganisian.

This week he faces Light welterweight (64 kg) Ahmed Boudiaf who has achieved success in both of his home matches for Algeria.

3-1 British Middleweight (75 kg) Anthony Fowler lost his first match of the season two weeks ago, and his top five ranking, so a victory over Ilyas Abbadi is essential if he is to have any chance of qualifying for Rio 2016 via WSB with just two matches to go.

Abbadi was stopped in one round by Cuba’s Arlen Lopez a fortnight ago, but prior to that had won his first two matches of the season.

The last bout in Blida is a Heavyweight (91 kg) clash between 0-1 home favourite Samir Maslouh and 0-1 Lionheart Aboulaye Diane.

Who will produce magic in Maiquetía when Caciques Venezuela host Puerto Rico Hurricanes?

VENEZUELA-CACIQUES wsb

A South vs North American derby is one of the many highlights in week 11 of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) as Caciques Venezuela host Puerto Rico Hurricanes.

Both of these teams debuted this season, and each has acquitted themselves very well in the competition.

Venezuela have won four of their five home matches, while Puerto Rico are just one point behind third placed USA Knockouts in the Group B table.

Estadio Polideportivo José María Vargas, Maiquetía is the venue for this Group B clash, where on Saturday 28th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:00 (GMT -4.5) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Two exciting Light flyweights (49 kg) open the action as 3-1 home star Yoel Finol, who has won all three of his home matches, meets 2-1 entertainer Anthony Chacon Rivera.

After two away defeats to begin his WSB career, Caciques Bantamweight (56 kg) José Vicente Azocar has earned victory in his two home matches, including a first round knockout over Argentina’s Elias Nahuel Gonzalez.

This week he meets Dominican fighter Hector Luis Garcia Mora who makes his debut for the Hurricanes.

1-3 Venezuelan Light welterweight (64 kg) Luis Arcón’s last victory was against Poland’s Damian Tadeusz Kiwior a month ago, and he will aim to continue the momentum against 3-2 Puerto Rican Jan Rivera who has lost both of his away matches in Season V.

France’s Christian M’Billi Assomo is one of the most exciting prospects in all of boxing, and the Middleweight (75 kg) performed exceptionally in his WSB debut a fortnight ago when he stopped Argentina’s Sergio Alberto Lebensztajn.

The Hurricane may face a difficult task in achieving a second successive stoppage however, as his week 11 opponent is the undefeated Jose Endry Saavedra Pinto who memorably defeated USA’s Anthony Campbell in week two.

Caciques Heavyweight (91 kg) Alfonso Flores was stopped in his first two matches of the campaign, but returns after an eight week absence to fight Gabriel Richards who is on a two fight winning streak.

Mexico Guerreros look for sixth successive win against Russian Boxing Team

Mexico Guerreros, WSB

Mexico Guerreros are one of the form teams in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) with the North American Franchise undefeated in five matches.

This week they meet Russian Boxing Team whose own unbeaten run was snapped last week by Cuba Domadores.

Many of the fighters competing in this fixture have aspirations to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games via WSB, and with just two matches to go in the Regular Season for the Mexican competitors in action this is a very important match for all concerned.

The Russian fighters actually have three more matches in the Regular Season however, following the postponement of their week one clash against Algeria Desert Hawks.

Gimnasio Olimpico De Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Saturday 28th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:30 (GMT -6) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

4-1 Mexican Light flyweight (49 kg) Joselito Velázquez Altamirano is currently ranked third in the weight class, five points behind leader Patrick Barnes.

As only one Light flyweight will qualify for Rio through WSB, Altamirano needs an impressive win over Russia’s Vasilii Egorov who has won all three of his matches this season at home.

Russian Bantamweight (56 kg) Vladimir Nikitin is 3-0 in Season V, and could enter the rankings if he defeats Mexico’s 0-1 Sergio Alfredo Chirino Sánchez.

The Light welterweight (64 kg) division is incredibly close this season, and two Olympic quotas are available for that weight.

4-1 Guerrero Raúl Curiel García is ranked third, just one point behind the top two placed fighters Vincenzo Mangiacapre and Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev.

Garcia is also only one point ahead of fourth ranked Yasnier Toledo, and with all four of these boxers competing this weekend, a win for the Mexican is essential.

He has to defeat the unbeaten Vitaliy Dunaytsev to stay in Rio contention, and Dunaytsev has looked impressive this season defeating the likes of Samuel Maxwell and Hamza El Barbari.

Despite having only competed in three bouts so far in Season V, Russia’s Petr Khamukov is fifth in the Middleweight rankings, and he has a match in hand on his main rivals as well.

Khamukov has stopped all three of his opponents so far in the campaign, and a fourth against Mexican debutant Héctor Octavio Aguirre Martínez could catapult him up the Middleweight rankings.

The Heavyweights (91 kg) close the evening in Mexico as 1-0 home star Julio Cesar Castillo Torres meets 3-0 Evgeny Tishchenko.

Will Argentina Condors win their second consecutive match when they meet Italia Thunder?

Mexico Guerreros, WSB

Italia Thunder welcome Argentina Condors to Rome in week 11 of the World Series of Boxing (WSB).

The Argentine Franchise will be full of confidence after winning their first match of the season last week, and they also drew with Italy earlier on in the campaign.

Italy need a victory here to put pressure on the third placed USA Knockouts to give themselves a chance of qualifying from the group stages.

Additionally, three fighters from the Italian Franchise are strongly in contention to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games through WSB, and need to win their bouts in this fixture.

Discoteca Alcatraz, Milan is the venue for this Group B clash, where on Saturday 28th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:00 (GMT +1) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Ireland’s Patrick Barnes has won all five of his matches this season, and stands at the top of the Light flyweight (49 kg) rankings with 25 points.

Only one fighter will qualify for Rio 2016 via WSB at this weight class, but Barnes is in pole position to do so.

Two points ahead of nearest rival Hasanboy Dusmatov, if the Irish star defeats 2-1 Junior Zarate in Milan he will be on the cusp of qualification with one match to go

Another Irish fighter with Olympic dreams is Michael Conlan, who is third in the Bantamweight (56 kg) rankings.

Two quotas for Rio 2016 are available from this division, and the 3-2 Olympic medalist is just three points behind second placed American Francisco Martinez, with number one placed Magomed Gurbanov a further point ahead.

Conlan needs to win well against Argentina’s 0-2 Ignacio Perrin to remain in the hunt, but the Irish star usually performs very well when competing under pressure.

Light welterweight (64 kg) Vincenzo Mangiacapre is ranked number one in his weight class, but only one point separates the top four fighters.

Mangiacapre controls his own destiny however, and if he beats 1-2 Ronan Nahuel Sanchez he will head into the final match of the Regular Season with much confidence.

Both 0-1 Italian Raffaele Munno and 0-2 Christian Zarate look for their first win of the campaign at Middleweight (75 kg), while the night closes with a Heavyweight (91 kg) bout between 1-1 home star Fabio Turchi and 0-2 Condor Dario Alcapan.

Olympic dreams on the line as Rafako Hussars Poland meet Azerbaijan Baku Fires

Logo RAFAKO Hussars Poland. WSB

Rafako Hussars Poland host Azerbaijan Baku Fires this week in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) with much to fight for.

The Azeri Franchise have won four of their last five matches, and are looking to maintain second place in the Group B table.

Meanwhile, fighters on both teams have just two more matches to compete in the Regular Season, and many of the boxers on show in this match have a burning ambition to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games through WSB.

Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa AWFiS, Gdansk is the venue for this Group B clash, where on Saturday 28th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:30 (GMT +1) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Azerbaijan’s 4-0 Magomed Gurbanov tops the Bantamweight (56 kg) rankings by a single point over America’s Francisco Martinez, but crucially leads third placed Michael Conlan by four points.

If Gurbanov wins his penultimate Regular Season match over Poland’s Sylwester Kozlowski he will take a giant step towards qualifying for Rio 2016.

The Light welterweight (64 kg) weight class is one of the most intense divisions in WSB this season, and Azerbaijan’s 4-1 Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev is second in the rankings, level on points with top placed Italian Vincenzo Mangiacapre.

Gadzhialiyev’s other rivals including Raúl Curiel García and Yasnier Toledo are just a point behind, so the WSB veteran needs a convincing victory against 1-3 Damian Tadeusz Kiwior to give himself the best chances of staying in the top two heading into the final match of the group stages.

Poland’s Tomasz Jablonski lost his first bout of the campaign two weeks ago to Meiirim Nursultanov, but still stands at the top of the Middleweight (75 kg) rankings with his destiny firmly in his own hands.

Only two points separates the top four fights in the division however, so anything other than victory over Jaba Khositashvili would be a disaster for the talented 4-1 fighter.

A superb Heavyweight (91 kg) shootout will close the night in Poland, as Rain Karlson meets fourth placed Abdulkadir Abdullayev.

Only one Heavyweight will qualify for Rio 2016 through WSB, so a loss for either man in this fixture will definitely spell the end of their hopes.

The action begins in Gdansk with a Light flyweight (49 kg) contest between Poland’s 1-4 Dawid Sebastian Jagodzinski and 0-1 Rasul Saliyev.

WSB: Can Morocco Atlas Lions Maintain Their Momentum Against Ukraine Otamans?

Morocco Atlas Lions host Ukraine Otamans in week 11 of the World Series of Boxing (WSB).

The Moroccan team won their last match away in London against British Lionhearts, while Ukraine defeated China at home last week.

This is also the penultimate match for these weight classes in the Regular Season, so there is significance for boxers competing who are aiming for Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification via WSB.

Hyatt Regency, Casablanca is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Friday 27th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 22:00 GMT at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Uzbekistan’s 5-0 Hasanboy Dusmatov has been one of Ukraine Otamans’ best boxers this season, and is ranked number two at Light flyweight (49 kg) two points behind Ireland’s Patrick Barnes.

Only one Light flyweight will qualify for Rio via WSB, so a win for Dusmatov against Moroccan debutant Yassine Zaher is imperative for the Uzbek star to keep Barnes in his sights heading into the last part of the Regular Season.

Joseph Joyce vs Leunier Eunice Pero (WSB Week 6)
Joseph Joyce vs Leunier Eunice Pero (WSB Week 6)

Another undefeated Uzbek fighter is Middleweight (75 kg) Hurshidbek Normatov who is 4-0 for Ukraine this season.

Normatov is ranked third at the weight class, a solitary point behind Poland’s number one Tomasz Jablonski, and level with Cuba’s Arlen Lopez.

Two Middleweight fighters will qualify for Rio through WSB, so Normatov will need an impressive victory over 1-2 Atlas Lion Said Harnouf who won his last home match.

1-2 Bantamweight (56 kg) Mohamed Hamout has not competed for over a month, but returns to action when he faces Ukraine’s 3-1 Mykola Butsenko who could enter the Bantamweight rankings if he succeeds in Casablanca.

Ukraine have not won a match at Light welterweight (64 kg) this season in five attempts, but neither has Morocco’s 0-5 Hamza El Barbari, which makes his clash with 0-1 Dmytro Grynchenko a very interesting one.

The last match of the evening is a Heavyweight (91 kg) shootout between Amine Azzouzi who competes for the first time since week one against Ukrainian debutant Arsenity Azizov.

Individual and Team glory up for grabs as China Dragons host Cuba Domadores

World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season IV Champions Cuba Domadores have won all ten of their matches in Season V, and look for an eleventh win in a row away to China Dragons.

Six fighters competing in this match still harbour aspirations of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and with just two matches to go for each competitor in the Regular Season, victories are vital for all concerned.

Mangrovetree Convention Center, Sanya is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Friday 27th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 19:30 (GMT +8) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

The first bout of the evening is an intriguing Light flyweight (49 kg) contest where both participants know a loss will end their hopes of qualifying for Rio.

Just one Olympic quota is available from this weight class, and with Ireland’s Paddy Barnes leading the rankings with 25 points, Cuba’s fourth placed 3-2 Joahnys Oscar Argilagos Perez and China’s fifth ranked He Junjun are both ten points behind.

Because of the form of Barnes, and second ranked Hasanboy Dusmatov, a win for either the Chinese star or the Cuban might not be enough to keep their dreams alive, but the loser will definitely miss out, which makes victory essential.

Cuba’s Andy Cruz Gomez has only competed in three matches this season, but still stands fifth in the Bantamweight (56 kg) rankings, five points behind leader Magomed Gurbanov.

Two Bantamweights will qualify for Rio, and with second ranked Francisco Martinez facing fourth placed Meirbolat Toitov this week, a win for Gomez will send him up the rankings.

To achieve the victory however, he will need to defeat Diao Jianhao who has won both of his home matches in Season V.

4-0 Cuban Light welterweight (64 kg) Yasniel Toledo did not compete two weeks ago, which means the undefeated fighter is now ranked fourth in his weight class.

Valdimir NIKITIN vs Wang LONG (Russian Boxing Team vs China Dragons)
Valdimir NIKITIN vs Wang LONG (Russian Boxing Team vs China Dragons)

Only two points separate the top four fighters however, so a convincing win over 1-2 Sairike Tuoliaowutayi could launch Toledo back to the top of the rankings.

Middleweight (75 kg) is a similarly tight division, but Arlen Lopez has the advantage of being ranked second in the division.

Lopez is a point behind Poland’s Tomasz Jablonski in the rankings, but level with Hurshidbek Normatov who the Cuban lost his last away match to a month ago.

His opponent in Sanya is Chinese debutant Chao Gejiletu who will be looking to cause an upset in his first WSB appearance.

WSB Season IV Boxer of the Year Erislandy Savon is 5-0 this season, but is a point behind the number one ranked Heavyweight (91 kg) Vasiliy Levit.

Only one qualification spot for Rio 2016 is available for the Heavyweights, so Savon will need his fourth stoppage success of the season against 0-1 Jin Guo.

Savon was recently named the American Boxing Confederation’s Men’s boxer of 2014, and will take confidence from that accolade heading into this contest.

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan hunt for 11th successive win away to USA Knockouts

The irresistible force meets the immovable object in week 11 of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) as USA Knockouts host Astana Arlans Kazakhstan.

USA Knockouts have lost three of their last four WSB matches but still remain third in the Group B table, while group leaders Astana Arlans Kazakhstan are undefeated in Season V.

With just two matches to go for the weight classes in action for this fixture, there is also massive importance for those boxers who are hoping for Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification via WSB.

Miccosukee Resort & Gaming, Miami is the venue for this Group B clash, where on Friday 27th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:00 (GMT -4) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

For much of Season V, American Bantamweight (56 kg) Francisco Martinez was ranked number one, but after losing his undefeated record two weeks ago to Michael Conlan, he has slid down to second in the standings.

Two Bantamweights will qualify for the Olympic Games, but with the third ranked Conlan now breathing down his neck, and Azerbaijan’s Magomed Gurbanov a point ahead, Martinez needs to return to winning ways against Meirbolat Toitov.

The 3-0 Toitov is fourth in the WSB rankings, and a win could take him above Martinez going into the final match of the Regular Season.

Will home advantage enable Martinez to steady the ship with Rio 2016 almost in his sights? Or will Toitov, in his first away match of the campaign, put himself firmly in the qualification picture?

Middleweight (75 kg) is one of the closest divisions in WSB this season, with the top four boxers separated by just two points.

Levit vs Jakubowski (Astana Arlans Kazakhstan vs Raffako Hussars Poland
Levit vs Jakubowski (Astana Arlans Kazakhstan vs Raffako Hussars Poland

Kazakhstan’s Meiirim Nursultanov has amassed a 4-0 record across the campaign, and sits fourth in the rankings with two matches to go.

Although his Rio 2016 destiny is not currently in his hands, Nursultanov defeated the number one seed Tomasz Jablonski two weeks ago, and knows an away victory against American debutant Kalvin Henderson will greatly improve his chances of moving up the rankings.

Perhaps the most competitive weight class in all of the competition is Heavyweight (91 kg) where just one boxer will qualify for Rio through WSB.

5-0 Kazakh Vasiliy Levit leads the rankings but is just a single point ahead of Cuba’s Erislandy Savon.

All five of Levit’s fights this season have not gone past the third round, and he will need another early night this week when he meets Adrian Taylor who makes his first appearance for USA Knockouts.

The action begins in Miami at Light flyweight (49 kg) when Joshua Franco faces 1-1 Temirtas Zhussupov, while fifth ranked Light welterweight (69 kg) Samat Bashenov needs to defeat Tyrek Irby to maintain any chances of qualifying for Rio.

Ionut-Mirel Jitaru vs Denys Poyatsyka (British Lionhearts vs Ukraine Otamans)

Ukraine Otamans defeated China Dragons 4-1 in Kiev to solidify third place in Group A of the World Series of Boxing (WSB).

Flyweight (52 kg) Azat Usenaliev opened the night for Ukraine by winning his first bout in three matches as he outpointed China’s 1-2 Hu Jianguan.

Jun Shan evened up the scoring after fight number two when he won his second successive WSB match by defeating Ukraine’s Lightweight (60 kg) Oleg Prudkyi who suffered his third loss in a row.

The Otaman assault resumed when Oleg Zubenko won Ukraine’s first match of the season at Welterweight (69 kg) with a unanimous decision verdict over Chinese debutant Haishaer Taximaimaiti.

3-1 Ukrainian Light heavyweight (81 kg) Oleksandr Khyzhniak secured the win for Ukraine, and gave himself an outside chance of Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification through WSB by winning every round against 0-3 Shi Guojun.

Super heavyweight (91+ kg) Ihor Shevadzutskyi achieved his first match of the campaign in the last fight of the evening when he stopped China’s Wang Zhibao in round four of their contest.

Ukraine Otamans travel to Morocco Atlas Lions next week, while China Dragons host Cuba Domadores.

The perfect 10 secured for Astana Arlans Kazakhstan after beating Azerbaijan Baku Fires

Levit vs Jakubowski (Astana Arlans Kazakhstan vs Raffako Hussars Poland
Levit vs Jakubowski (Astana Arlans Kazakhstan vs Raffako Hussars Poland

An absorbing World Series of Boxing (WSB) Group B clash in Shymkent was won by Astana Arlans Kazakhstan 4-1 over Azerbaijan Baku Fires.

This was Kazakhstan’s tenth successive victory in Season V, and they are now just three fixtures away from going undefeated throughout the entire Regular Season.

Undefeated Flyweight (52 kg) Olzhas Sattibayev won every round of the opening match of the evening and subjected Azerbaijan’s Murad Rabadanov to his first defeat of the campaign.

The Baku Fires achieved their only success of the fixture at Lightweight (60 kg) when the number one ranked Albert Selimov earned his fifth consecutive win of the season by defeating 0-3 Zakir Safiullin.

Although Selimov won on all three scorecards, the fight was a close one and Safiullin should be proud of a courageous performance against a man who is on the cusp of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games via WSB.

After a victory for Cuba’s top ranked Light heavyweight (81 kg) Julio César la Cruz in Moscow on Friday night, third ranked Hrvoje Sep kept up the pressure on his rival with a resounding victory over Baku Fires representative Mikhail Dauhaliavets.

Kazakhstan’s overall victory was assured at Welterweight (69 kg) when debutant Kanagat Maralov enjoyed a split decision victory against the fourth ranked Parviz Baghirov whose Olympic qualification chances via WSB are perhaps over after this defeat.

Only one Super heavyweight (91+ kg) will qualify for Rio 2016 at the end of the Regular Season, and the top ranked Croatian Filip Hrgovic achieved his fifth win of Season V, and his fourth stoppage as he finished Haji Murtuzaliyev in the first round of their meeting.

The battle for the number one spot between Hrgovic and Britain’s Joseph Joyce is one of WSB’s most intriguing stories, and with just two matches to go for both, the race for Rio is on.

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan visit USA Knockouts next week, while Azerbaijan Baku Fires travel to Rafako Hussars Poland.

Mexico Guerreros make it five wins in a row following success in Algeria

The mercurial Mexico Guerreros accomplished their fifth successive World Series of Boxing (WSB) victory with a 3-2 away win against Algeria Desert Hawks.

This victory keeps the momentum going for the Mexican Franchise who are pushing third placed Ukraine Otamans all the way in Group A, while Algeria will take confidence from almost matching the North American team in Blida.

Mexican Flyweight (52 kg) Orlando Huitzil Ahuatl opened the scoring for his team after winning a tight bout against Algeria’s 0-3 Abdelhakim El Barka.

Lindolfo Delgado began the evening with a 3-0 record and ranked fourth in the Lightweight (60 kg) rankings, but lost his first match of the season to Algeria’s 4-1 Reda Benbaziz who won every round of the fight, and could take Delgado’s place in the WSB rankings after this win.

The Guerreros resumed the lead when Welterweight (69 kg) Marvin Cabrera won his second consecutive match as he outpointed Sofiane Tabi.

Light heavyweight (81 kg) Rogelio Romero earned his second win of Season V, and the overall victory for Mexico after defeating Algerian WSB veteran Hichem Kaalaour in an incredibly close match.

Another narrow bout occurred at Super heavyweight (91+ kg) when Desert Hawk Mohamed Grimes secured a split decision verdict over Irish debutant Dean Gardiner.

Mexico Guerreros host Russian Boxing Team next week, while Algeria Desert Hawks welcome British Lionhearts.

Composed Caciques Venezuela upset USA Knockouts in Caracas

USA Knocouts vs Italia Thunder
USA Knocouts vs Italia Thunder

Caciques Venezuela achieved their fourth home win in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) by defeating USA Knockouts 4-1 in Caracas.

This result reignites Venezuela’s chances of qualifying from Group B, while the American team will be disappointed by their second heavy loss in a row.

Venezuela began the night with a 1-0 advantage after USA’s Steven Nelson did not compete in his Light heavyweight (81 kg) match with Albert Ramon Ramirez Duran.

A huge upset occurred in the first match of the evening when Venezuela’s Eduard Johan Bermúdez Salas defeated the second ranked Flyweight (52 kg) Brent Venegas III by split decision.

Venegas III drops to 3-2 this season, and with just two matches to go in the Regular Season, how significant will this result be for his Rio 2016 qualification chances through WSB?

USA’s Maliek Dawnnell Montgomery then achieved his first victory of the campaign by stopping Venezuela’s 1-2 Fradimil Macayo in round four of their contest.

The Venezuelan victory was assured by 3-1 Gabriel Maestre Perez who impressed once again in WSB when he outpointed the fifth ranked Welterweight (69 kg) Brian Ceballo.

There was another surprise result in the last fight of the night as home star Edgar Ramon Munoz Mata earned his first WSB success in five matches by stopping Cam F. Awesome in round two of their bout.

Caciques Venezuela host Puerto Rico Hurricanes next week, while USA Knockouts welcome Astana Arlans Kazakhstan.

Argentina Condors defeat Rafako Hussars Poland to secure first win of Season V

After nine winless weeks in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB), Argentina Condors finally achieved their first victory of the campaign by defeating Rafako Hussars Poland 3-2 in San Luis.

Hamza Touba earned his second successive WSB in in the first fight of the evening at Flyweight (52 kg) when he beat Argentina’s Cristian Alan Choque Chambi on points.

Argentina’s Brian Ivan Nunez evened up the scoring, and achieved his first win in five matches this season as he edged a split decision verdict over 1-4 Dawid Michelus.

The momentum swung back to Poland in fight number three, when Ireland’s third ranked Welterweight (69 kg) Steven Donnelly kept his Rio 2016 qualification chances very much alive after winning by split decision against Alberto Ignacio Palmetta.

A Condors comeback resumed at Light heavyweight (81 kg) as home favourite Marcos Escudero outpointed Mateusz Jerzy Tryc to make the score 2-2.

With the weight of a proud boxing nation behind him, Argentine Super heavyweight (91+ kg) Leonardo Taborda kept his cool to earn a first victory of the season for himself, and his team with a wide points success over Roger Hryniuk.

Argentina Condors travel to Italia Thunder next week, while Rafako Hussars Poland host Azerbaijan Baku Fires.

Classy Cuba Domadores Stay Undefeated Away To Russian Boxing Team

Cuba Domadores stormed to their tenth consecutive victory in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) with a 4-1 win away to Russian Boxing Team.

This was Russia’s first home defeat of the season, and they will be disappointed to have fallen to the Group A leaders.

Number one ranked Flyweight (52 kg) Yosbany Veitia opened the night for Cuba with success over Russia’s Ovik Ogannisian.

Veitia won every round and took a giant step closer to qualifying for Rio 2016 through WSB.

Heavyweight (91kg) Erislandy Savon (R) Cuba Domadores vs Abdulkadir Abdullayev (L) Azerbaijan Baku Fires
Heavyweight (91kg) Erislandy Savon (R) Cuba Domadores vs Abdulkadir Abdullayev (L) Azerbaijan Baku Fires

A closer fight occurred at Lightweight (60 kg) but the result was still a Cuban victory as Lazaro Alvarez won by split decision against Artur Subkhankulov.

The number one ranked Welterweight (69 kg) Radzhab Butaev earned Russia’s sole win in Moscow, and accomplished his fifth win of the season as he defeated Olympic gold medalist Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo by a single point on all three scorecards.

Julio César La Cruz secured the overall victory for Cuba, and established his dominance at the top of the Light heavyweight (81 kg) division by winning on points against Russia’s Gamzat Gazaliev.

Domadores Super heavyweight (91+ kg) Lenier Eunice Pero reignited his chances of Rio 2016 in the last fight of the evening as he subjected Maxim Babanin to his first loss of the campaign on points.

Cuba Domadores travel to China Dragons next week while Russian Boxing Team visit Mexico Guerreros.

Morocco Atlas Lions Win Scintillating Clash With British Lionhearts In London

A hugely entertaining World Series of Boxing (WSB) evening at London’s legendary York Hall was won by visitors Morocco Atlas Lions who defeated British Lionhearts 3-2.

Each match was filled with excellent boxing and drama, and exemplified the world class action that has been showcased all throughout Season V of WSB.

This spirit was typified in the last fight of the evening at Super heavyweight (91+ kg) when second ranked Lionheart Joseph Joyce took his season record to 5-0 after defeating a very tough Abouhamada Abdeljalil on points.

Joseph Joyce vs Leunier Eunice Pero (WSB Week 6)
Joseph Joyce vs Leunier Eunice Pero (WSB Week 6)

Joyce showed excellent conditioning in the bout, and displayed his frightening power regularly, while Abdeljalil’s resilience and heart was clear to see across all five rounds.

The win for Joyce keeps his chances of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games very much alive, and puts huge pressure on top ranked Filip Hrgovic who competes later this weekend.

Another prospective Olympian is Moroccan Welterweight (69 kg) Mohammed Rabii who defeated Britain’s Haizel Ekow Tabiri-Essuman on points to keep his undefeated streak going.

Worryingly for the 5-0 Rabii however was the deep cut he suffered early on in the contest which caused the fight to be ended after the third round.

Rabii is ranked number two at Welterweight, but the division is one of the deepest in WSB and he will need to recover quickly to fight again in two weeks time.

The Atlas Lions won the first match of the evening at Flyweight (52 kg) when Achraf Kharroubi defeated Spain’s José Kelvin de la Nieve Linares by split decision in an entertaining contest.

19-year-old Lionheart Luke McCormack then enjoyed an impressive debut at Lightweight (60 kg) with a dominant performance over Abdellah Boudrar.

After Rabii’s success, a win for Dutch Light heavyweight (81 kg) Peter Mullenberg secured the overall victory for Morocco, although he was pushed all the way by the very impressive British debutant Joshua Buatsi.

The new Lionheart was the more powerful boxer, and clearly stunned Mullenberg on occasion, but though Buatsi clearly proved his undoubted potential, the Dutch fighter was busier throughout the contest and won the fight, and the evening for his African Franchise.

British Lionhearts travel away to Algeria Desert Hawks next week, while Morocco Atlas Lions host Ukraine Otamans.

Will Russian Boxing Team defeat Cuba Domadores for the second time in WSB history?

Valdimir NIKITIN vs Wang LONG (Russian Boxing Team vs China Dragons)
Valdimir NIKITIN vs Wang LONG (Russian Boxing Team vs China Dragons)

World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season IV Champions Cuba Domadores have lost just one match in WSB history, away to Russian Boxing Team in the Regular Season last year.

The two teams meet again in Moscow at the same stage this week and both are in tremendous form, with Russia enjoying a 25-0 record at home, while Cuba have won all nine of their fixtures this season.

Sports Palace “Wings Of The Soviets”, Moscow is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Friday 20th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 20:00 (GMT +3) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Cuba’s Yosbany Veitia tops the WSB Flyweight (52 kg) rankings after four consecutive victories, and meets Russia’s Ovik Ogannisian who makes his first appearance of the season.

The top two ranked Light flyweights at the end of the Regular Season will qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and with just two matches to go Veitia is four points ahead USA’s Brent Venegas III who is his nearest rival.

Lazaro Alvarez is ranked second at Lightweight (60 kg), and is two points behind the current leader Albert Selimov.

Cuba’s Alvarez is 4-0 this season, but all of his matches have finished either on points, or by walkover.

To catch Selimov, and definitely secure qualification for Rio, he will need an impressive performance against Russian debutant Artur Subkhankulov.

Russia’s Radzhab Butaev has dominated the Welterweight (69 kg) division this season, and sits at the top of the rankings in that weight class.

With nearest rival Mohammed Rabii competing on Thursday for Morocco Atlas Lions, Butaev will be keen to assert his dominance but faces a difficult challenge when he meets London 2012 Olympic gold medalist Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo.

Cuba Domadores WSB

The Cuban lost in Morocco two weeks ago to Rabii, and knows anything other than a win against Butaev will spell the end of his Olympic qualification dreams via WSB.

That fact makes this clash incredibly important for both Welterweights, with the winner taking a giant step towards Rio 2016.

Another aspiring Olympic star competes at Light heavyweight (81 kg), where the number one ranked Cuban and two-time AIBA World Champion Julio Cesar La Cruz meets Russia’s WSB veteran Gamzat Gazaliev.

La Cruz is level on points with the second ranked Italian Valentino Manfredonia, and just two points ahead of third ranked Hrvoje Sep so will be hunting a stoppage win in Moscow stay in control at Light heavyweight.

Number four ranked Super heavyweight (91+ kg) Lenier Eunice Pero will be keenly aware that there is only one Rio 2016 quota available from WSB in his weight class, and as he is four points away from top ranked Filip Hrgovic, he knows only a stoppage will do against Russia’s 2-0 Maxim Babanin if he is to have any chances of qualifying.

Can China Dragons win away in Kiev against Ukraine Otamans?

Fresh from defeating British Lionhearts in London last week, Ukraine Otamans host China Dragons in a World Series of Boxing (WSB) match they need to win to maintain third place in Group A.

Sports Palace, Kiev is the venue for this Group A clash, where on Friday 20th March fans across the world can watch the action free, live and on demand from 21:30 (GMT +2) at AIBABoxingTV.com.

Flyweight (52 kg) Azat Usenaliev has lost his last two WSB matches after memorably upsetting Andrew Selby earlier in the competition, and will look to resume winning ways against China’s 1-1 Hu Jianguan.

Oleg Prudkyi is also on a two fight losing streak for Ukraine, but faces a tough task when he meets China’s Lightweight (60 kg) Jun Shan who defeated Oualid Belaoura two weeks ago.

WEEK 1 Match Ukraine Otamans vs Mexico Guerreros
WEEK 1 Match Ukraine Otamans vs Mexico Guerreros

Ukraine have yet to win a match at Welterweight (69 kg) this season in four attempts, so 0-2 Oleg Zubenko will want to break the duck against 21-year-old Chinese debutant Haishaer Taximaimaiti.

2-1 Ukrainian Oleksandr Khyzhniak is just outside the Light heavyweight (81 kg) top five rankings, and a victory over 0-2 Shi Guojun may reignite his Rio 2016 ambitions with two matches to go.

The final match of the evening is at Super heavyweight (91+ kg) where home favourite Ihor Shevadzutskyi looks for his first win of the season against 1-1 Wang Zhibao.

Italia Thunder won their first World Series of Boxing (WSB) match in three weeks as they defeated USA Knockouts 5-0 in Roseto Degli Abruzzi.

Can Caciques Venezuela upset Azerbaijan Baku Fires again in WSB?

VENEZUELA-CACIQUES wsb

World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season IV runners up Azerbaijan Baku Fires have finally found form in the fifth edition of the competition having won their last three matches.
