NBBF RESCHEDULES 2015/2016 LEAGUE FIXTURES

Following the elimination of Union Bank, Dodan Warriors and Lagos Islanders from the DSTV Basketball League, the Nigeria Basketball Federation has re-organised the fixtures for the forthcoming DSTV Basketball 2015/2016 League season.

This decision was taken due to the participation of the three Lagos teams in the Africa Basketball League which the NBBF considers as illegal.

For that reason, it has been confirmed that only five teams will slug it out in the Atlantic Conference of this season’s DSTV Basketball League: Rivers Hoopers, Delta Force, Oluyole Warriors, Kwara Falcons and the only Lagos side left, Nigeria Customs. This means, a team will be placed on standby every week with the others playing against each other twice in the same week.

To this end, Rivers Hoopers have been scheduled to play their first two games away at Customs in Lagos on Friday, March 18 and Sunday March 20, 2016.

Reacting to the new fixtures, Rivers Hoopers coach, Ogo Odaudu gave his full backing to the initiative by the NBBF.

“It is better for the teams to play two games a week a total of 16 games rather than the 14 previously and so we won’t wait too long in between games. It was also done that way because of the Olympics so we could finish on time. We will cope and I strongly support it,” said Odaudu

“It also reduces the risk of travelling when we play two games before coming back.” he added.

On the likelihood of the teams faced with problems arising from fatigue, he retorted:

“Fatigue? We are bound to play every day in the play offs, one day rest is good for us and that is why you are allowed to register 15 or more players so another player can step in when a player gets injured‎.”

Islanders Set To Make Marks At Landmark Centre…Host Oluyole In Week-8 Pairing

Islanders basketball club of Lagos is gradually returning to its age-long status as one of the most followed basketball teams in Nigeria with the way it has been promoting the slamming and dunking game with superb performance week-in week-out in the DStv Premier Basketball League.

Though under a new management led by telecommunications expert Oladamoye Oyesiku who took over the Islanders basketball club franchise in the wake of 2009 by relegating his former club Kennys’ Bullets basketball club by retaining the traditional name – Islanders basketball club and with the fusion with some goal driven young Nigerians who have added flair to the club image and partnering with the management of Landmark Event Centre, Victoria-Island, Lagos.

Islanders basketball club is on the verge of becoming the envy of other clubs in the Nigerian league.

With initial challenges in securing the basketball equipment which include a floor and uprights the club temporarily retained the national stadium as its home court where it has continued to build a solid fan-base which has seen it win six of its seven regular season games including great away results with an emphatic 86-62 points away win at Oluyole Warriors in Ibadan.

The Islanders will then host the Ibadan war-lords – Oluyole Warriors basketball club in a week-8 pairing at the Landmark Event Centre and has promised to give fans a worth-while first game at the Landmark by setting a mark that basketball fans will always look forward to returning to the Landmark to see the best of basketball mixed with entertainment to be provided by hip hop crooner Sound Sultan.

The May 29 week-8 game against Oluyole Warriors will be remarkable in the history of the league and the upward looking profile of Islanders basketball club at the Landmark Centre.

Club chairman, Damoye Oyesiku says plans have reached an advanced stage for the Islanders to host a hitch free first game at the Landmark by making a mark with the game against Oluyole Warriors.

NBBF hammer falls on Police Batons, coach, player

The Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF has fined the Police Batons Basketball Club and slammed a five-match suspension on one of its coaches and players for their conduct in a Week 5 game in Ilorin between them and the Kwara Falcons.

Those affected are Coach Dominic Dike and Malu Williams, a player who spots jersey number 9, whose overall conduct and behaviour during the said game the federation views as “short of the standard expected in our fast growing league.”

According to a press statement from the NBBF, coach Dike and Williams are each suspended for five league matches with immediate effect and with a warning that they use the suspension period to improve their behaviour.

The team was also fined N50,000, part of which will be used to replace the damaged plastic chairs in the Ilorin Sports Hall while it was strongly advised to learn to channel its grievances through the available appropriate structures.

The NBBF noted that “Although your team won the game, be on notice that the intimidation of game officials and opponents, use of abusive language and damage to property (plastic chairs in the hall) without recourse to available channels of protesting any observed or perceived shortcomings on the side of any game official(s), are actions capable of damaging the image of our game and league and taken together, are a bad example especially coming from a team of law enforcement officers.”

It added that the “uncontrollable outburst by your coach Dike Dominic and player, Malu Williams (both under observation for similar conduct in previous games), is totally unacceptable,” resulting in the sanctions meted out to them in order to remedy the situation.
