Egypt And Kenya Claim First Gold At FIVB Competitions

2015 in review

After many years of development and technical work, 2015 featured great achievements for African Volleyball when giants Egypt and Kenya stood on the gold medal podium at the FIVB Group 3 World League and Grand Prix respectively.

Egypt edged Montenegro in the Final match of World League Group 3 to clinch a ticket for Group 2 in 2016, but more important to boost African Volleyball at the international level after a 5 year absence from the prestigious event.

The win for Kenya came barely a week after the Egypt (men) national team lifted the men’s version of the competition (world League) Group Three, a clear indication that Africa Volleyball is on steady rise at the world stage.

Nigeria’s Black Stallions In Top Eight As Kenya Sevens Qualifies for 2016 Olympics

Nigeria’s Black Stallions finished in eight place at The Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Olympic Qualifiers at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, on Sunday.

Speaking from their Southern Sun hotel in Johannesburg, Coach Fabian Juries says 5 players picked up a series of injuries and knocks and it affected the team’s overall performance. Our captain; Azeez Ladipo injured his shoulder in the early minutes of the first game and we had to manage him through some matches. Nuhu Samaila, Ike Onwukanjo, Onyinye Onwukanjo, Hafis Ayinla; were also injured leaving us with just one substitute in the last two games.

Fabian Juries further explained that the team improved from last year’s outing where they placed eleventh and says there is room for more improvement. “We set a quarter final target and the boys met it but going forward, we need to work on strength and conditioning of the team and ensure they play together in more tournaments”. Kenya and Zimbabwe invest a lot in their team’s strength and conditioning and it was evident in their performance. However, if you watch the Nigeria vs Zimbabwe match, you wouldn’t notice much difference as we completely matched their game. Strength and Conditioning requires a bigger budget moving forward.

CCSF Tournament To Be Considered As WTF G-1 Event

The annual Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) International Taekwondo Opens may become a World Taekwondo Federation may (WTF) Grade 1 event in 2016.

With this status, the tournament would become a point hauling event for athletes across the globe as taekwondists are expected to use the tournament to up their world ranking.

Being the first tournament in Africa to use the electronic head gear, the CCSF championship has continued to attract the best fighters on the continent with countries like Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger Republic, Togo, Cameroun and Senegal taking part in this year’s tournament.

Efforts are on by the organizers of the CCSF Open to apply for the status from the world taekwondo ruling body.

Mali’s Golden Star, Karamoko Soumare, stands heads above Silver Medallist, Temitope Oyo [Nigeria National Team] and Bronze Medallists, Sunday Onofe [Nigeria National Team] and [MALI] during the medal ceremony for the +80kg category at the just concluded 3rd CCSF Opens

For the best athlete of this year’s tournament, Mali’s Karamoko Soumare (+80kg), attending the tournament has really exposed him to world class equipment which would aid him in subsequent tournaments.

“Having attended series of tournament across Africa, I realized that CCSF tournament stands out in terms of organization and quality of equipment. The atmosphere was also superb. Being my first time of taking part in the competition, I think the knowledge I acquired would be helpful to me in other international tournaments and I look forward to taking part in more CCSF tourneys,” the Malian star said.

Soumare who won gold in the men’s heavyweight category believes the quality of athletes in Nigeria is enormous while blaming their under-achievement on lack of exposure of most of their athletes. “I respect Nigerian athletes particularly with the pedigree of their athletes, but they have not been able to use this to their advantage at international tournaments. We attend a lot of international tournaments but I hardly see Nigerians competing and this has really affected their rating globally. But attending international competition is vital for any nation to improve her athletes,” he added.

Also silver medalist at the CCSF Opens, Cameroun’s Kamgue Silvre hailed the organizers for putting the colourful tournament together, which he described as a world class championship. “I am surprised with the quality of organization as well as the atmosphere which is of international standard. I am indeed looking forward to the next edition because I have been able to up my skills as well as improve my rating among the best fighters in Africa. Winning silver will surely improve my chance of representing my country at the Olympics qualifiers come 2016. When the tournament gets the WTF G-1 rating, I believe more athletes within and outside Africa will be part of the tournament,” Kamgue, winner of the fair play award said.

Kenya Names Youthful Squad For Olympic Volleyball Qualifiers

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has overhauled the national men’s squad ahead of the forthcoming Olympics qualifiers. Newly appointed National men’s volleyball team head coach Paul Gitau who took over from Geoffrey Omondi overlooked experienced players when he named his provisional 22-man squad over the weekend.

Gitau who won gold with the junior women’s team at this year’s African Games in Congo, Brazzaville seems to have drawn inspiration from working with young players when he dropped a dozen of player who took part in the last Africa Nations Championship in Egypt.

Those who faced the axe are Captain Philip Maiyo who joined Qataris champions-Al Rayyan Sports Club from Al-Arabi this season. His former assistant and first setter Elisha Aliwa of Kenya Defence Forces was not spared either by the new coach who also chopped Mike Chemos, fresh from signing with a Finnish club. The only ‘big wig’ who won Gitau’s heart is Jame Ontere who is based in Japan. Ontere’s contribution to his local side Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) who top the men’s national league standing heading into the playoffs plays pro-Volley with Oita Miyoshi in Japanese V-League.

Nairobi Water trio, setter Elijah Bosire, left attacker James Mwaniki and libero Fredrick Mwangi who steered the side to a fifth finish in national league regular season in their debut season in the top tier league lead the young crop of players drafted in the squad as Kenya seek to build a squad for future assignment after several years of poor result in the men’s competition.

While Gitau’s selection may be questionable considering the importance of the assignment ahead, that unfamiliar decision can be interpreted as a step by the local federation’s attempt to try and keep up with the likes of Rwanda and Egypt who have given them tough times at the continental or regional stage.

It was almost a complete overhaul in the setter position with only Kenya Prisons youthful Nicholas Lagat making a return to the squad. Both Aliwa and his Kenya Prisons’ mate Daniel Kiptoo were shown the door. Bosire and Tom Wanjala from Bungoma County took their places.

David Kirwa and Maiyo were axed on the right attackers position with Solomon Bitok being recalled back to the team alongside Ontere, Martin Kiptoo of Coop Bank and Nafula Chumba from Kenya Defence Force.

Kenya men's Volleyball team

Only Cooperative Bank’s Ronald Bitok was reconsidered in the Centre blocking position. Both Hudson Chesoli, Wesley Rono, Ronald Kirwa, Dennis Mokua were shown the door. The new faces for that position include Prisons Mombasa’s Jimmy Ngala who was chopped from the last squad by coach Geoffrey Omondi and Gideon Kirwa of Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Ports Authority’s Sammy Ngeny, Rodgers Kipkirui and Shadrack Misiko

On the left, the sword fell on Nicolas Kiplagat, Bonventry Wekesa and Michael Njoroge. The position however saw the return of Cornelius Kiplangat (GSU) who will be fighting for the same place with Mwaniki, David Thuita (Forest Rangers), Sila Kipruto and Jairus Kipkosgei both of Prisons.

Gitau also did away with liberos Peter Kibata and Faustine Baraza but handed Muiruri, one of the best upcoming liberos a chance alongside James Mutero and Sam Juma.

CCSF. Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation, taekwondo

“I am convinced beyond any doubt that CCSF has done a lot to promote and develop taekwondo in Nigeria. For us at the NSC, we want to partner organizations like this because they are doing things that are in line with our vision. The atmosphere at this year’s tournament is what obtains globally in terms of international standard and I don’t think any reasonable person will not be impressed with what they have seen here tonight. Apart from the tournament, they have had workshops and other developmental activities to support the upcoming athletes. With this, NSC will be entering into a four-year strategic partnership with CCSF to champion the development and promotion of taekwondo which is an Olympic sport in Nigeria. So from 2016, the collaboration will take off with NSC fully supporting the foundation in all its activities,” Alhassan said.

After two days of competitive action, NSCDC confirmed why it is committed to sports in Nigeria when its athletes dominated the medals table at the 3rd CCSF Open concluded at the weekend.

NSCDC amassed four gold, one silver and four bronze medals to beat Mali and Niger Republic to second and third places on the medal table.

Mali again showed why it remains of the taekwondo power house in Africa when the two inspired by Soumare Karamoko won two gold and two bronze medals while Niger Republic won same number of gold with one silver and one bronze medals.

From the 284 athletes that featured in the competition which has the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)-certified referees handling proceedings, Mali’s Karamoko was voted the best male athlete while NSCDC’s Chinazum Nwosu won the best female diadem.

Cameroun’s sole representative who fought his way into the final in the men’s -80kg to clinch silver medal won the fair play award for his sportsmanship during the final match, which he lost to NSCDC’s Segun Olushola. Youthful Thursdaline Peter was adjudged the most outstanding referee of the championship.
