Ex-International Okenla Set To Launch The Biggest Cultural Carnival In Africa

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has given former green Eagles winger Folorunsho Okenla the mandate to run the biggest cultural festival in Africa, the Abuja Carnival, now known as the Nigeria National Carnival for the next three years.

The Morroc 88 star who is now an accomplished marketing expert has been told to change the face of the festival and take it back to the summit of cultural events celebrated across the world.

While revealing this in Abuja, Okenla who is renowned for his mesmerizing wing-plays in his playing days says his new mandate is a national assignment that will be given optimum attention and insists that the Nigeria National Carnival should be the biggest carnival in Africa.

“The Nigeria National Carnival is an annual event that showcases the rich cultural values of the most populous country in Africa, reflects the diversity of ethnic expressions in Nigeria and by its name should be the biggest in Africa.

It is a carnival that is supported by the Nigerian Ministry of Culture and Tourism and this year’s event will take place between November 21 and 24.

Just like sports, the Carnival seeks to unite Nigerians by bringing together young adults from different cultural divides and providing an atmosphere where cultural values could be appreciated, not only by Nigerians but by the world.

It will be a rich blend of cultural and ethnic events to show the wealthy heritage of the people of Nigeria. It features traditional music and dance, cultural parades, indigenous circus shows among others.

It is also important to note that corporate giants like Glo, Turkish Air, Dangote Group among others have signified interest to be part of the carnival.” The former Birmingham City of England player said.

Okenla who was a roommate to late midfielder, Samuel Okwaraji also shared his thoughts on the Super Eagles 0-0 draw against Tanzania.

“I think Nigerians should give Oliseh a chance, the Super Eagles cannot be transformed in a day or with just one match. He needs the nation’s total support to succeed.

We need to focus on the assignments at hand because it will be unbearable to miss out of AFCON again.”

LMC to Display ‘Protect the Goal’ Banners at Match Venues

Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) Hon. Nduka Irabor has pledged the support of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) partnership of the global AIDS awareness initiative ‘Protect the Goal’ campaign launched by the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan on Monday.

A December 2013 report on the AIDS pandemic show that 3.1% of the about 119m youths and young adult population aged between 15-49 years are infected by the HIV virus.

Irabor said the LMC will be support the NFF to drive the awareness on the dangers of and preventive measures to curb HIV, at all Glo Premier League matches which attract this critical segment of the vulnerable demographic with signage that will be displayed on perimeter boards at all live broadcast of star matches every week

“We support the NFF’s involvement in this initiative for several reasons starting with the importance of taking this message to our players, their peers and fans who represent a critical demographic group for which this message is even more urgent. LMC is also aligning with the NFF on this campaign because football league venues attract the critical and highly vulnerable groups in the society made up of the biggest clusters of sexually active youth population and others who due to limited education are not being adequately exposed to HIV campaigns that run largely on mediums like television and the new social media etc”, remarked Irabor.

He said in recognition of new age communication trends, the LMC would also carry the campaign message on all its social media platforms, which has become a

premium engagement and contact point with the bulging youth and young adult population.

Irabor said, “to support the campaign and take the message to the millions of football fans that now see the league on television across the country and the others that watch physically at the stadium in the 20 cities that host Glo League games as well as the millions of others who track the league on the web, the LMC will in the days ahead display messages from the campaign on perimeter boards during live broadcast matches of the Glo Premier League and on the league social media platforms including facebook, twitter and on our website”.

A resurgent interest in the League has seen young Nigerians daily following the fortunes of their favorite clubs and players at match venues and on official and independent social media sites devoted to the league. It has led to heightened debates with passion running high among this segment of the population who are largely young men and women under 30 years of age, the catchment age bracket of the campaign.

Glo NPFL Super 4: Red cards fly, as Enyimba defeat Wolves

Two players were sent off as Enyimba went clear at the top of the Pre Season Super Four table with six points, after securing a
2-0 win over Warri Wolves in the first game of Match Day Two of the tournament.

Musa Najere of Warri Wolves, and Markson Ojobo of Enyimba both received their marching orders in a rough encounter.

Abdulrahman Bashir, who plundered a hat trick on opening day, broke the deadlock when he stooped to nod in an Mfon Udoh pull out in the 11th minute. Wolves were reduced to 10 men in the 23rd minute when Musa Najare was sent off following a rash challenge. The game then almost degenerated into a slugfest, as Warri Wolves resorted to rough tackles in a bid to limit the damage.

Efe Yarhere, who came on for injured Daddy Bazuaye was lucky not to have been sent off, as he was involved in several
altercations despite receiving a caution moments after coming on.

Enyimba were also reduced to 10 men after Markson Ojobo was sent off six minutes into the second half.

Ageless striker, Emeka Nwanna came off the bench for Enyimba in place of Sokari in the 82nd minute, and seven minutes later,
sealed the deal for the Aba Millionaires as he shook off his marker to score the second goal.

Enyimba now need only a draw against Kano Pillars, or lose by less than six on the final day, to emerge Super Four champions

GLO CAF Awards fallout…Eagles Salute Maigari Over Awards Sweep…Tip Mikel For Future

GLO CAF Awards fallout…Eagles Salute Maigari Over Awards Sweep…Tip Mikel For Future

Despite Super Eagles and Chelsea midfield maestro, John Mikel Obi not being named the African Footballer of the Year at Thursday’s awards ceremony in Lagos, it was plaudits galore for the NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maiagari, his executive committee and all Nigerians over the near clean sweep of awards at the Eagles camp in Cape Town on Thursday night.

From Assistant Coach, Dan ‘the bull’ Amokachi, Team Administrator, Dayo Enebi Achor to other officials and indeed the players it was clapping and praises galore as award after award was named after Nigeria. Even the Protocol Official attached to the team, Lawrence Kentu and other security personnel in the team were not left out of the praise for the NFF and its leadership.

“It’s simply the best era in Nigerian football and we pray and hope that it will be sustained in the coming years”, declared an obviously elated Emmanuel Attah, who is the team’s Coordinator. Gangling defence ace, Azubuike Egwuekwe, said he was not too disappointed at Mikel’s loss because head or tail, Nigeria was the champion of the night. “We are sure that Mikel or a Nigerian will win the next award”, he said excitedly.

Team Psychologist, Dr Robinson Okosun spoke in a similar vein, declaring that with the clean sweep of awards, the year 2014 will be a better one for Nigeria. “Yes we may be a little disappointed that Mikel did not win but are assured that we will do better in the New Year, starting with the CHAN tournament and we will return again next year to take what rightly belongs to us”.

Amokachi, who is normally not used to emotions said there was a lot to cheer from the award ceremony. “We had a clean sweep and we must comment President Maigari and his board but the message is for us to work harder and remain the dominant force in African football”, he said. Team’s Media Officer Ben Alaiya, simply said he could not agree more with the deluge of accolades that were poured on Nigerian football and the Maigari led NFF. “Its congratulations and more work to be done”.

Former Nigeria captain Sunday Oliseh will anchor the event alongside renown South African broadcaster Carol Tshabalala.
