ICC’s Digital Initiatives Continue To Scale New Heights

ICC announces ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier digital statistics with record numbers for an ICC qualifying event and global interest expanding to millions around the world

Giles Clarke: “The continued growth of the ICC’s digital properties is part of an ongoing effort to expand the reach of the sport around the world”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced strong growth in digital consumption following the successful ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 held in July across Ireland and Scotland.

There was unparalleled coverage for the event on ICC digital and social media channels, with overall traffic numbers making it the second largest ICC digital event in recent years, surpassing both the ICC World Twenty20 in 2014 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. The dedicated event website attracted 3.75 million unique users, more than double that figure for the ICC World Twenty20 2014 in Bangladesh. These visitors created nearly 20 million page views, which is more than treble the figure of the ICC World Twenty20 in 2014.

The digital coverage was particularly well received in many of the competing nations with fans from Afghanistan, Kenya, Nepal, Netherlands and USA combining to make up over 20 per cent of all website traffic.

For the first time at an ICC qualifying event, 20 matches were broadcast globally and short form match clips were hugely popular right across the world on ICC’s digital channels. The video content reached fans in over 200 countries, with over 13 million video views and over 12 million minutes of online video content consumed.

Another first was the launch of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 App, which aimed to build on the success of the record-breaking ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 App. The ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 App was available for free on both Android and iOS, it had over 2.2 million users from more than 200 countries. The App was very well picked up in the participating countries, and it topped the charts as the Number 1 downloaded sports App in 6 countries whilst reaching the Top 10 list in the same category in 22 other countries.

On ICC social media channels, there was also huge interest in the tournament as fans were given their opportunity to get involved with the global broadcast and interact with the players and commentators in Ireland and Scotland. The reach of ICC’s posts on Facebook topped over 129 million people in July, whilst there was 35 million impressions of ICC tweets during the tournament.

Fans also got their chance to vote for both the Play of the Day video and the Play of the Tournament video, which attracted over two million votes. One video alone attracted over 750,000 views. The eventual winner of the inaugural Play of the Tournament at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 was Nepal’s Siddhant Lohani for his remarkable helicopter shot.

The Chairman of the ICC’s Financial and Commercial Affairs Committee, Mr Giles Clarke, said: “The ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 digital statistics show the ever-growing interest in Associate cricket across the globe. The acceleration in growth is such that the numbers of fans engaged from the Associate sides competing in the event this July matched the number of fans engaged from Full Member nations at the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, 2014. I was hugely impressed with the quality of the cricket from all the competing nations I saw in Ireland and Scotland, and cricket fans worldwide have made their voices heard with the sheer scale of numbers that interacted with the tournament online.

“The continued growth of the ICC’s digital properties is part of an ongoing effort to expand the reach of the sport around the world and the ICC intend to be at the forefront of innovation as we enter a new ICC Digital Strategy from 2016 onwards. The ICC will continue to try and grow the game into new markets by using the ICC’s substantial digital presence at both of the important upcoming ICC events, the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2016, and the ICC World Twenty20 2016.”

Hosts Australia and New Zealand were congratulated on their successful staging of an event described by the ICC Chairman, Mr. Narayanaswami Srinivasan as the ‘most popular in history’.

The ICC CWC 2015 set a new attendance record of 1.1 million spectators with 10 matches attended by crowds in excess of 40,000 and over 94,000 people attending the final.

It was broadcast by 44 licensees in seven languages across 220 territories and covered in the host countries by 1,210 rights holding media and 1385 non-rights holding media.

The event website attracted 36.1 million unique visitors accumulating 304 million page views and the official app attracted 4.51 million downloads, making it the number one ranked sports app in 48 countries.

Mr Srinivasan also thanked the ICC staff, Match Officials, Local Organising Committee and all of the participating teams for their contributions to the event and congratulated Australia on its victory.

A more detailed report on all aspects of the ICC Cricket World Cup will be considered at the next ICC Board meeting in June.

Sri Lanka Cricket

The ICC Board considered the implications of the appointment of an Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) by the Government of Sri Lanka and whether this may be a breach of the ICC’s constitution which requires free and fair elections for office-bearers within Member boards.

After considerable discussion, and without making a final decision on the matter, the ICC Board supported a recommendation of the ICC Governance Review Committee that it should write to the Sports Minister of Sri Lanka seeking a full and proper explanation of its intervention that prima facie puts SLC in breach of the ICC’s constitution.

Cricket in the USA

Following a report on recent correspondence and discussions between the ICC and the USA Cricket Association (USACA), the ICC Board decided that it was not satisfied that USACA is compliant with all of its obligations under the ICC membership criteria and constitution.

It was decided that there was a significant amount of further work that needed to be carried out in order to complete a full and proper assessment. In support of this, a Task Force headed by the ICC Chief Executive David Richardson will travel to the USA to meet relevant stakeholders in USA cricket in order to prepare a comprehensive report for further consideration by the ICC Executive Committee and ICC Board at its next meeting.

Illegal bowling actions

Revised procedures for dealing with bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling actions were approved, including provisions that:

· shorten the turnaround time from a bowler being reported to the test results being announced (35 days reduced to 24 days); and
· enable the ICC to recognise suspensions from domestic competitions, as long as the bowler has been assessed by the Member using the ICC testing protocol at an ICC-accredited testing centre.

The revised procedures will take effect immediately.

Other matters

The Board meeting commenced with Mr Srinivasan noting the immense contribution to the global game of the former Australia captain and iconic commentator Richie Benaud who passed away earlier this month.

A new rankings system has been approved for women’s cricket, incorporating results in all three formats into a single rankings system.

Nepal has been approved as host of the ICC U-19 CWC Qualifier 2015, however, this approval is conditional on the ICC being satisfied with the Cricket Association of Nepal’s (CAN) administrative capacity to deliver the event successfully.

The Board ratified the appointment of the former United Nations and International Criminal Court investigator Peter Nicholson as the new independent ICC Ethics Officer.

The Board also received reports on anti-corruption and anti-doping and approved the 2014 accounts.

Throughout the course of the week’s meetings, the various committees considered the post-2015 strategy of the ICC and provided input into a draft that will be further considered in June.

The ICC Board consists of the nominated representatives of each of the 10 Full Members plus three elected Associate Member representatives. The meeting is chaired by Mr Narayanaswami Srinivasan. Also present is the ICC Chief Executive.

Proven Formula Proposed For ICC Champions Trophy 2017

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have recommended that the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 follow the successful formula of the 2013 event with The Oval, Edgbaston and Cardiff being the venues proposed.

Steve Elworthy, the ECB’s Head of Global Events, said: ‘The format and the venues in 2013 proved extremely popular and the fans turned out in record numbers for the event.

‘All three venues will be keen to repeat their success from the last tournament and I am sure they will have learnt from the experience which will lead to the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 being even more memorable.’

Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, added: ‘There has never been such a concerted period of high class international cricket in England and Wales. ECB will host three global events with the Champions Trophy 2017, the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2017 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 within two years.

‘This is a golden time for spectators to watch cricket in our country and we know from the experiences of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 that the tournament appeals to fans from all ethnic backgrounds and they are most welcome in our grounds.’

In 2013 Edgbaston held the 50-over final between India, the eventual winners, and hosts England while in 2017 it is planned that The Oval will host its second ICC Champions Trophy final – the other being in 2004 when West Indies beat England.

All venues are subject to ICC approval.
