Nwakamma Hits Record 44 Points, As Dolphin Set Single Game League Record Of 127…,

Back to back league runners up, Dolphins basketball club of Lagos set the indoor sports hall of the Ilorin Township stadium alight on Friday by setting a new Zenith Bank Female Basketball league record of 127 points, in their 127-33 win over Zamfara Babes.

The FIBA Africa Zone 3 champions were powered by point guard Amaka Nwakamma who set a record for points made in a game, this season with 42points, shooting over 50% from the field and 60% from the freethrow line. Dimunitive guard Tokunbo Olaosebikan and Juliet Currency both combined for 38 points in the commanding performance over the Zamfara Babes.

Amaka Nwakamma after the victory said the victory was bold statement from Dolphins to Zamfara and other teams .
“ I heard the Zamfara Babes made some unguarded comments about us after we met in Abuja, so we decided to show them how ruthless we can be”.

“This is also a statement to all other teams that we are ready to win the championship this year”.
Concerning her record breaking scoring feat, Amaka said it is a product of team work.

“My performance was impressive but I want to thank my team mates for creating the room for me to express myself offensively”.

Dolphins continue to sit top of the Group B with 22 points and a perfect 11 wins from 11 games from the first phase in Abuja.

…Taraba Hurricane Pull off Immigration Upset.

Taraba Hurricane’s search for a first win of the season ended on Day 4 of the Zenith bank Women basketball League as they upset out of form old power house Immigration 52-46.

Jane Alabi and Sarah Stanley combined for 22 points for the Hurricanes as they held on from a spirited fight back from the immigration Ladies who fought back from a 12 point deficit to tie 44-44 in the final quarter, only to eventually capitulate in the final minutes of the game.

Coach Ahmedu Abba of Taraba said his girls fought for the win .
“ We lost to immigration by 1 point in Abuja, so we vowed we will beat them today and that’s we managed to do. We hope to get a couple more wins under our belt for the end of the league”.

In other results of the day FCT Queens came from behind to get their 2nd win in Ilorin with a 44-37 points win over GT2000 of Kaduna, while Nasarawa Amazon beat Coal City Queen 31-18. And AHIP Queens bagged their 4th win in the 2nd phase with a 53-45 points win over the Oluyole Babes.

After missing out on the title for four straight seasons to First Deepwater basketball. First Bank basketball club Saturday return to winning ways with a 65-51 points victory over hard fighting Dolphins basketball club to win its sixth Zenith Bank Women League title out of ten editions of the league.

The epic final which drew a large crowd a keenly contested in first half with First Bank winning by just 2 points (35-33). The third quarter saw First bank extend her lead by 8 (51-43) before blowing out Dolphins in the final quarter with a 14-8 run to claim the top spot of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF organized Zenith Bank league.

Amaka Nwakamma of Dolphins lead the floor with 22 points and 7 rebounds in the losing effort while First Bank’s offence was powered by duo of Nkem Akaraiwe and Oluchi Nnzekwe with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 10 points respectively.

However, the intricate rebounding and defense of Chioma Udeaja who had a finals record 16 rebounds with 6 points to go with it, was the tonic that got the elephant girls the much needed victory and herself the Most valuable Player Award.

Former champion First Deepwater basketball club settled for third place with a 96-45 points win over FCT Angels basketball club.

The duo of Dolphins basketball club Bintu Badmus and Amaka Nwakama claimed the league top rebound and highest scorer award, while the league Top-5 players went to Upe Atosu (First Deepwater), Patience Okpe (Dolphins), Nkechi Akashili (First Deepwater), Chioma Udeaja (First Bank) and Amaka Nwakama (Dolphins). FCT Angels who came 4th won the fair-play trophy

Amaka Nwakama Leads Sea Waves Past Ocean Breeze in First Female League All Star Game.

It was a spectacle to behold at the inaugural Zenith Female Basketball League All Star game on Friday at the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium in Lagos. As Team Sea Waves beat Ocean Breeze 54-46 to win the much anticipated exhibition game.

The Sea Waves conquest was lead by Nigerian international and First Deepwater guard Atosu Upe who lead the floor with 15 points and 4 rebounds. Dolphins guard Amaka Nwakamma added 12 points and 6 assists as her 6’7 Togolese team Kodjo Nadege made an impressive defensive showing with an all star record of 7 blocks and 8 rebounds despite just adding 2 points.

The Adewunmi Aderemi tutored Sea Waves trailed Lateef Erinfolami’s Ocean Breeze in the first 2 quarters 12-17, 31-34 only to come out guns blazing in the 3rd quarter with an 11-3 run to take a 42-37 points lead. From that point the Sea Waves never looked back as they extended their lead by 8 points and held on for victory.

The Ocean Breeze team who gave a good account of themselves in the loss was lead by First Bank’s Nigerian international Forward Chioma Udeaja who scored 12 points, picking 8 rebounds and 2 steals and the trio of Nancy Romeo Irabor (IGP Queens), Eva Atunuwa (Sunshine Angels) and Ebere Okeke (FCT Angels) all adding 8 points apiece in a colourful display.

The Skills Challenge had 4 teams of a player, a coach and a retired female basketball player compete for the 2014 Skills challenge crown. Team D comprising of Opeyemi Lawal (FCT Angels), Chioma Udeaja who was a late replacement for Gloria Edward and Lateef Erinfolami won the challenge in tie breaker ahead of Team B, who had Customs and Gombe Bulls Coach Abdulrahman Muhammed, Shola Ogunade and Mary Chimweokwu (First Deepwater).
