NPFL MATCH DAY 6 : Tornadoes subdue Rivers United in thriller

A late fight back from Rivers United fail to yield dividends as Nigeria Tornadoes prevailed by the odd goal in five in a tempestuous but hugely-entertaining Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) contest decided at the Lokoja Stadium on Sunday.

The big news from the United camp before kick off was the demotion to the bench, of former Super Eagles goal keeper, Sunday Rotimi with Godwin Anyalogu preferred in his place.

In Rotimi’s absence, United conceded three, for the first time this season but Anyalogu was not culpable for any.

In a first half that ebbed and flowed, both sides traded goal scoring chances with the hosts finally taking the lead in the third minute of stoppage time.

United defender, Gabriel Olalekan, who had proved to be his side’s best player of the half, inexplicably attempted a bicycle kick at the edge of his own half but inadvertently caught Ammeh Wilfred in the face.

Olalekan’s carelessness was to cost United as Ismaila Gata stepped up and curled home a beauty from 25 yards past a diving Anyalogu with what proved to be the last kick of a brilliant half of football.

The goal on the stroke of half time was a psychological blow which the United players failed to recover from as the luckless Olalekan diverted Gabriel Wassa’s long range effort past a stranded Anyalogu in the 58th minute for the hosts’ second goal.

Two-nil quickly became three-nil and remarkably, Olalekan was again at fault.

The former Sharks man mistimed a defensive header and Jackson Daniel smacked home at the second time of asking despite Anyalogu’s best efforts to keep out the strike.

The United trainer, Eguma responded by throwing in attacking substitutions which delivered rich and dramatic late rewards.

Daniel Israel and Guy Kuemian were thrown into the fray and they repaid their trainers’ faith with late goals that threw the cat among the pigeons among the Tornadoes faithful.

It proved to be too little, too late though an Ayobami Asekunowo expulsion, at the death, for a second bookable offence saw United’s late fight back end in yet another away defeat.

Tornadoes’ assistant coach, Bala Mohammed blamed ‘tactical mistakes’ for his side’s near capitulation of monumental proportions late on in the contest.

“We had some minor tactical errors especially from the action of our players when they lost the ball.

“After we got the third goal, our player got carried away; most of them.

“They only played when they had the ball and stopped playing when they did not.

“Rivers United then began dominating the midfield with four midfielders playing against our three and that was how they got their goals within a five-minute period,” Mohammed told RIVERS UNITED MEDIA.

On his part, the United technical manager, Stanley Eguma said he will try to ‘correct mistakes’ from their next league fixture.

“We started quite well but we conceded that goal from a free kick at the stroke of half time.

“In the second half, we conceded two quick goals as my players lost their heads.

“The good thing was the fight back but we will try to correct our mistakes from our next match,” Eguma said.

Overall, the game was a brilliant advert for Nigerian football with Tornadoes moving up four places up the standings to 11th place with seven points from six matches while United dropped two places and now occupy seventh place with nine points from six matches

NIGER TORNADOES VS RIVERS UNITED NPFL WEEK 6 MATCH PREVIEW

Niger Tornadoes and Rivers United go head to head in a match day six Nigeria Professional Football League game that should be special for many reasons.

Tornadoes currently sit in 15th place on the NPFL standings with four points from five matches but this is a side that can score goals.

Abdullahi Biffo’s charges have scored in all but one of their opening five fixtures this season but they come up against a United side that sit in fifth place on the log and have netted in all five of their games this term.

Biffo has no injury concerns and says his side is ready to put the Port Harcourt club to the sword on Sunday.

“The fans want victory and that is what the players want too. Our position on the log is not encouraging so to improve it, we have to go all out for an outright win against Rivers United,” Biffo told RIVERS UNITED MEDIA.

Tornadoes currently play their home fixtures away from their traditional home ground; the Minna Township Stadium due to refurbishment work at their home lair.

They have since made the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, their home ground where they have amassed four points from a possible six.

Biffo does not think playing home games away from Minna is a problem for his side.

“That we play in Lokoja does not affect our results. It is quite clear that in the Nigerian league today, if you have a good team, you can play anywhere (and get a good result).

“We don’t really miss playing in Minna (from a footballing perspective).

“The only thing we miss are the fans who will always come out in their numbers to cheer us to victory when we play in Minna,” he said.

The visitors, Rivers United have been peerless at home but notoriously poor travellers this season.

They have shipped in four goals in just two matches and failed to amass even a single point on their travels this season.

Technical manager, Stanley Eguma has no injury worries but has surprisingly excluded Benjamin Ovoke from the match day squad.

He insists the losing streak in away games will be snapped on Sunday.

“We have yet to pick up a single point on the road this season. We have prepared for this game against Niger Tornadoes.

“Our preparations are aimed at seeing us pick maximum points (here in Lokoja) but we know we are going to face a very good side.

“From their days in the second division, they have kept the core of their tem even after gaining promotion (to the elite division) so they have continuity as an important factor going for them,” he said.

The fixture kicks off at 4pm at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja.

NNL: “We Were Unlucky” – Biffo.

NNL

Head Coach of Kogi United, Abdullahi Biffo has blamed ill luck for his side’s 0-2 loss to Adamawa United in the Week 26 Nigeria National League, NNL in Fufure.

The first half saw the Wada Boys putting in all, it ended goalless but they looked to have soft pedaled on the restart as they conceded a goal in the first minute of the second half.

Abubakar Haruna was released down the left in the box and his left foot shot went past keeper Innocent Ndem.

As they were surging forward to restore the parity, they conceded the second goal through a counter attack scored by substitute Awesu Mohammed in the 67th minute.

All effort for Kogi United to come back into the game was fruitless as they missed numerous chances.

Biffo, who said he’s saddened with the loss noted that positives were taken from the game.

‘Its unfortunate, we were so unlucky to loose this match, we conceded two easy goals which differentiated the match while we had our chances but unlucky to make them count.

“Above all, I’m really impressed with my players’ fighting spirit, they never relented even at 2-0, this is what we really need, I believe this will pay off in our subsequent matches,” Biffo said.

Coach of Adamawa United, Ibrahim Bariki admitted that his side were lucky with the victory adding that Kogi United really gave his side a real fight.

He however believed the Wada Boys have what it takes to end the season on a high.

Kogi United will return home to prepare for the next game against Wikki Tourists in Lokoja.

Head Coach of Nigeria National League, NNL side Abdullahi Biffo has disclosed that his boys were too complacent in their 3-2 home victory over bottom placed Prisons FC on Saturday.

It was a game expected to be one sided and for Kogi United to dominate based largely on the positions of both sides on the league table, but it proved not be as Prisons boys gave a good account of themselves throughout the entire duration of the game.

The Confluence state team took the lead in the 39th minute after captain Abiodun Afolabi converted a spot kick. Ebenezer Odeyemi doubled the lead for Kogi United with a fine header from Afolabi’s cross with just six minutes into the restart.

Prisons FC reduced the deficit to one when Endurance Ighahon capitalized on a communication error in Kogi United’s defense, sending goalkeeper Ndem Innocent to wrong side in the 71st minute.

Substitute Opeyemi Oketola restored the two goal advantage ten minutes later with a cool finish.

And just when Kogi United were celebrating their two goal margin, Sunday Emmanuel released a shot from outside the box that went straight into the net in stoppage time.

Biffo who queried his players for their poor performance, commended his opponent for their fighting spirit in the match, just as he promised to make amends for their mistakes in subsequent games.

“We got the maximum points, and I think that’s the most important thing in football, so we should be happy for that, but performance wise, we didn’t do well, may be my boys were looking down on Prisons, but of course we knew it won’t be that easy because a team in the position of Prisons will play like this, their performance really proved they didn’t deserve to be at the bottom of the league, for our shortcomings today, we would go back and correct that before our next match,” Biffo said.

Meanwhile, Technical Adviser of Prisons FC, Brown Zibiri admitted that Kogi United deserved to win, but was happy with the performance of his players.

“Kogi United showed maturity today, I think that’s what gave them the victory, they truly deserved it, but my boys did make me proud today, that’s my consolation, they didn’t show they are a team at the bottom of the league, and I still have hope and believe we can make it out,”

Kogi United have however accrued 38 points from 23 matches and their next match is against FRSC in Keffi on Saturday.

Biffo Lauds His Wards’ Labored Victory

Head Coach of Nigeria National League side, Kogi United FC, Abdullahi Biffo has commended his players’ performance for their 2-0 victory over Supreme Court FC in their Week 20 encounter at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja on Saturday despite his team could not play at their very best due to fatigue they suffered in their away trip to Sokoto mid week.

A goal in each half from Sanusi Pedro and Aminu Abdulkadir made it losing return for Osho, who was asked to step aside as the Head Coach of Wada Boys in mid-season, now in charge of visiting Supreme Court.

“I didn’t attached too much importance to this match until the blast of the whistle, you know we just returned from a 14 hour journey on Thursday, and that tell on us today, we could have done better, but I also like to commend the Supreme Court boys, they really suffered us, challenged us all through, we promise our next game (against DSS) will be better as we will have time to rest and prepare,” said Biffo.

Former Head Coach of Kogi United, Fata Osho also praises on his former club despite his new club’s loss to the Wada Boys.

“It was a fantastic game, I can’t expect anything less from Kogi United, this is a team that is destined and deserved to be at the top, I congratulate the boys of Kogi united, it will always remained in my heart as I enjoyed my stint here, but I also commend my boys for at least holding Kogi united to this extent, this is just a three week old team, we are building a new Supreme Court, and I hope we will get it right,” Osho Said.

Chairman of the Confluence State club, Abdul Adama said the players really showed their former handler how improved they are have just as he remained coy on the club’s promotion ambition.

Adama however, called on the supporters and fans of Kogi United to continue with their support for the club as each game will be dealt with as they come.

Kogi United have garnered 31 points from 19 games and will next host DSS FC on Saturday in Lokoja.
