NPFL MATCH DAY 6 : Tornadoes subdue Rivers United in thriller

A late fight back from Rivers United fail to yield dividends as Nigeria Tornadoes prevailed by the odd goal in five in a tempestuous but hugely-entertaining Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) contest decided at the Lokoja Stadium on Sunday.

The big news from the United camp before kick off was the demotion to the bench, of former Super Eagles goal keeper, Sunday Rotimi with Godwin Anyalogu preferred in his place.

In Rotimi’s absence, United conceded three, for the first time this season but Anyalogu was not culpable for any.

In a first half that ebbed and flowed, both sides traded goal scoring chances with the hosts finally taking the lead in the third minute of stoppage time.

United defender, Gabriel Olalekan, who had proved to be his side’s best player of the half, inexplicably attempted a bicycle kick at the edge of his own half but inadvertently caught Ammeh Wilfred in the face.

Olalekan’s carelessness was to cost United as Ismaila Gata stepped up and curled home a beauty from 25 yards past a diving Anyalogu with what proved to be the last kick of a brilliant half of football.

The goal on the stroke of half time was a psychological blow which the United players failed to recover from as the luckless Olalekan diverted Gabriel Wassa’s long range effort past a stranded Anyalogu in the 58th minute for the hosts’ second goal.

Two-nil quickly became three-nil and remarkably, Olalekan was again at fault.

The former Sharks man mistimed a defensive header and Jackson Daniel smacked home at the second time of asking despite Anyalogu’s best efforts to keep out the strike.

The United trainer, Eguma responded by throwing in attacking substitutions which delivered rich and dramatic late rewards.

Daniel Israel and Guy Kuemian were thrown into the fray and they repaid their trainers’ faith with late goals that threw the cat among the pigeons among the Tornadoes faithful.

It proved to be too little, too late though an Ayobami Asekunowo expulsion, at the death, for a second bookable offence saw United’s late fight back end in yet another away defeat.

Tornadoes’ assistant coach, Bala Mohammed blamed ‘tactical mistakes’ for his side’s near capitulation of monumental proportions late on in the contest.

“We had some minor tactical errors especially from the action of our players when they lost the ball.

“After we got the third goal, our player got carried away; most of them.

“They only played when they had the ball and stopped playing when they did not.

“Rivers United then began dominating the midfield with four midfielders playing against our three and that was how they got their goals within a five-minute period,” Mohammed told RIVERS UNITED MEDIA.

On his part, the United technical manager, Stanley Eguma said he will try to ‘correct mistakes’ from their next league fixture.

“We started quite well but we conceded that goal from a free kick at the stroke of half time.

“In the second half, we conceded two quick goals as my players lost their heads.

“The good thing was the fight back but we will try to correct our mistakes from our next match,” Eguma said.

Overall, the game was a brilliant advert for Nigerian football with Tornadoes moving up four places up the standings to 11th place with seven points from six matches while United dropped two places and now occupy seventh place with nine points from six matches

Dikko Canvasses Greater Awareness For The Women’s Game

NFF 2nd Vice President and Chairman of the League Management Company, Mallam Shehu Dikko has given kudos to the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons, after they defeated All Stars team 2-1 in a friendly game played at the FIFA Goal Project, Abuja.

Dikko told thenff.com: “I think they are coming up well because I saw them when they got to the camp at the beginning. There is a huge difference from what I saw here today. It looks as if they are really progressing. This means that the coaches are doing what they are suppose to do.”

He said that the Falcons are definitely getting into competitive shape. According to him: “It is really amazing for them to play against men and come out winners,” adding that the expected overseas–based professionals would enhance the team by adding the needed experience.

“The only thing is that the foreign based players will add a little bit of experience and maybe motivation for the other home based players to give their best. Anyway, it is always good to have your best legs for any competition. But from what I saw today, if they continue this way, I am sure that they are going to do well.”

Dikko urged the media to create more awareness for the women’s game: “Yes! There is always very little awareness of the women’s games. We urge the media to help in promoting the women’s game better.

“If it were to be the Super Eagles playing here today, you would have seen hundreds of people coming out to watch them. That’s the area we need to be working on. On the part of the NFF, we are always taking the Super Falcons very serious and we will continue to treat them specially.”

The Falcons won the very interesting game 2-1 through goals from Chioma Wogu and Ijeoma Obi. Evaristus Eriobu scored for the All Stars.

NTTF Fixes March 21 Deadline For U-16 National League

To give states a chance to be part of the maiden U-16 national league, the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has fixed March 21 as registration deadline.

According to the Secretary General of NTTF, Chinedu Ezeala-Ogundare, it becomes necessary to give the participants ample time to perfect their registration for the championship.

“With the success recorded by the senior national team at the ITTF World Team Championship in Malaysia, we want to ensure that we groom players that will come through the rank and that is why the U-16 National League becomes necessary and we have decided to give the states the opportunity finish their registration for the competition. We will not allow late registration because we want to give the teams chance to be part of the tournament which will help us to unearth new talents,” she added.

The U-16 national league will involve players across the country and it is meant to give new players the opportunity to make national junior teams as well as work their way into the senior team.

It will hold on March 29 to April 8 at the National Training Centre at the National Stadium Surulere, while the grand finale which is known as Super League will hold on May 14 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Each state across the country is expected to present two male and two female players, while the top eight players in the boys and girls event will qualify for the Super League.

According to the prospectus of the tournament, states wishing to participate will register with the NTTF, while only the first 20 boys teams and the first 16 girls teams to register for the League shall be accepted to participate while only players registered by states that are affiliated to NTTF are eligible to participate, while all players shall hold the current NTTF Player’s License, which must be produced on demand.

For the President of NTTF, Wahid Oshodi, more talented players would be given the opportunity to showcase their skills to the national handlers.

“I think our focus in 2016 as in 2015 is that we must continue to develop the junior and cadet players. We must give our most talented young players the right atmosphere for them to grow. This of course means giving them the best coaching and affording them the opportunity to play in tournaments internationally so we can assess how well they are doing against the best young players in the world. We have done quite well in this regard in the last two years but there are a lot more gifted players all over the country and we must do our best to discover and harness them. We hope to be able to create new tournaments outside Lagos and Abuja. If we can find the right partnerships with the private sector this will assist greatly in boosting the spread of the game all over the country,” Oshodi said.

Russian Boxing Team Defeats Rafako Hussars Poland 4-1 In Moscow To Take Their Place At The Top Of Group C

After three wins on the road so far this season, Russian Boxing Team made a triumphant return to Moscow on Saturday night, defeating Rafako Hussars Poland 4-1 in the Druhzba Sport Palace. The win puts the Russians top of their group just ahead of Venezuela Caciques, with Poland still chasing their first win of the season.

In the opening bout, former Russian National Champion Belik Galanov enjoyed his season debut against Rafako Hussars’ AIBA World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Dawid Jagodzinski. Unable to repeat his form of Season V, Jadodzinski was in trouble early on and a series of lethal Galanov right hands soon gave the Moscow crowd a TKO win to cheer.

Also making his first appearance this campaign was the hosts’ Vladimir Nikitin, and he picked up where his impressive 2015 left off with a showcase of boxing prowess to defeat Hussars’ Italian draft pick Riccardo D’Andrea by unanimous decision. At 2-0 down, Poland’s Mateusz Kostecki then delivered an inspired performance to overcome Russian U22 National Champion Grigorii Lizunenko, the referee ending their match in the third round to give the visitors hope of a turn-around.

Step forward Russian Boxing Team’s Petr Khamukov and Rafako Hussars Poland’s Tomasz Jablonski, two middleweight greats repeating their dramatic final of the 2015 EUBC European Confederation Boxing Championships. The result was to be the same as that gold medal epic despite Jablonski’s WSB pedigree, with Khamukov in imperious form to take all five rounds and ensure the Russians of the match win.

The two heavyweights Islam Tekeev and Poland’s Michal Olas then rounded off the night in fitting style, the Russian Tekeev on the attack throughout before surviving a late surge to take the points win and secure a 4-1 in front of the delighted Moscow fans. The Russians will host Venezuela Caciques on 1 April in a match that could decide who tops the group.

China Dragons Conjure Up Superb 4-1 Home Win Over Group A Leaders Ukraine Otamans In Sanya

Group A leaders Ukraine Otamans travelled to China high on confidence after a thrilling win over Group A rivals Cuba Domadores a fortnight ago, but the China Dragons carved out one of the performances of the season so far to win 4-1 on Saturday night to the delight of the home crowd. The hosts leap-frogged Turkiye Conquerors to go third in the group after the European side lost 5-0 in Havana, a result that sent the Cubans top.

In the first bout of the day, China Dragons’ He Junjun was in determined mood against Nazar Kurotchyn, his well-timed jabs repeatedly finding their target early on. The Dragons’ star grew stronger as the bout wore on and the crowd erupted as Kurotchyn was floored in the fifth round and counted out of the contest.

At 1-0 up, the WSB Athlete of Week 1, Xu Boxiang, looked composed in front of his home fans against Otamans’ Oleh Dovhun. An even contest exploded into life in the fifth and the Dragons’ man powered through to take the round 10:8 on all three scorecards and give the hosts a commanding 2-0 lead.

China Dragons’ light welterweight Meng Caicheng then delivered a superb performance against Ukraine Otamans’ 20-year-old Denys Pesotskyy to earn his first WSB win and give his side an unassailable 3-0 lead. Working from distance in the tight early rounds, Meng then found his rhythm closer in during the fourth, and despite a concerted fight back from Pesotskyy in the fifth, the Dragons’ hero had already done enough to earn the judges’ decision and a precious win for the team.

Dragons’ inexperienced Hanati Ayiben then had a tough challenge in the form of Otamans’ 2015 European Games competitor Valerii Kharlamov, but the southpaw’s stamina saw him through to record a memorable victory. At 4-0 down, the visitors finally got on the scoreboard in the final bout of the night as Ukrainian heavyweight Dmytro Lisovyi turned up the heat against Dragons’ debutant Zhang Zhe, but the victory was already assured and the China Dragons had caused the upset of the weekend on a night to remember for their home fans.

NIGER TORNADOES VS RIVERS UNITED NPFL WEEK 6 MATCH PREVIEW

Niger Tornadoes and Rivers United go head to head in a match day six Nigeria Professional Football League game that should be special for many reasons.

Tornadoes currently sit in 15th place on the NPFL standings with four points from five matches but this is a side that can score goals.

Abdullahi Biffo’s charges have scored in all but one of their opening five fixtures this season but they come up against a United side that sit in fifth place on the log and have netted in all five of their games this term.

Biffo has no injury concerns and says his side is ready to put the Port Harcourt club to the sword on Sunday.

“The fans want victory and that is what the players want too. Our position on the log is not encouraging so to improve it, we have to go all out for an outright win against Rivers United,” Biffo told RIVERS UNITED MEDIA.

Tornadoes currently play their home fixtures away from their traditional home ground; the Minna Township Stadium due to refurbishment work at their home lair.

They have since made the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, their home ground where they have amassed four points from a possible six.

Biffo does not think playing home games away from Minna is a problem for his side.

“That we play in Lokoja does not affect our results. It is quite clear that in the Nigerian league today, if you have a good team, you can play anywhere (and get a good result).

“We don’t really miss playing in Minna (from a footballing perspective).

“The only thing we miss are the fans who will always come out in their numbers to cheer us to victory when we play in Minna,” he said.

The visitors, Rivers United have been peerless at home but notoriously poor travellers this season.

They have shipped in four goals in just two matches and failed to amass even a single point on their travels this season.

Rivers United Coach Stanley Eguma
Rivers United Coach Stanley Eguma

Technical manager, Stanley Eguma has no injury worries but has surprisingly excluded Benjamin Ovoke from the match day squad.

He insists the losing streak in away games will be snapped on Sunday.

“We have yet to pick up a single point on the road this season. We have prepared for this game against Niger Tornadoes.

“Our preparations are aimed at seeing us pick maximum points (here in Lokoja) but we know we are going to face a very good side.

“From their days in the second division, they have kept the core of their tem even after gaining promotion (to the elite division) so they have continuity as an important factor going for them,” he said.

The fixture kicks off at 4pm at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja.

NBBF RESCHEDULES 2015/2016 LEAGUE FIXTURES

Following the elimination of Union Bank, Dodan Warriors and Lagos Islanders from the DSTV Basketball League, the Nigeria Basketball Federation has re-organised the fixtures for the forthcoming DSTV Basketball 2015/2016 League season.

This decision was taken due to the participation of the three Lagos teams in the Africa Basketball League which the NBBF considers as illegal.

For that reason, it has been confirmed that only five teams will slug it out in the Atlantic Conference of this season’s DSTV Basketball League: Rivers Hoopers, Delta Force, Oluyole Warriors, Kwara Falcons and the only Lagos side left, Nigeria Customs. This means, a team will be placed on standby every week with the others playing against each other twice in the same week.

To this end, Rivers Hoopers have been scheduled to play their first two games away at Customs in Lagos on Friday, March 18 and Sunday March 20, 2016.

nbbf logo, Basketball,

Reacting to the new fixtures, Rivers Hoopers coach, Ogo Odaudu gave his full backing to the initiative by the NBBF.

“It is better for the teams to play two games a week a total of 16 games rather than the 14 previously and so we won’t wait too long in between games. It was also done that way because of the Olympics so we could finish on time. We will cope and I strongly support it,” said Odaudu

“It also reduces the risk of travelling when we play two games before coming back.” he added.

On the likelihood of the teams faced with problems arising from fatigue, he retorted:

“Fatigue? We are bound to play every day in the play offs, one day rest is good for us and that is why you are allowed to register 15 or more players so another player can step in when a player gets injured‎.”

Cuba Domadores Return To Winning Ways With Resounding 5-0 Win Over Türkiye Conquerors In Havana

WSB Season IV champions Cuba Domadores bounced back from their defeat to Ukraine Otamans a fortnight ago with a comprehensive 5-0 whitewash of Turkiye Conquerors on Friday night. It was the Cubans’ first home match of the current campaign, and Havana provided a predictably testing atmosphere for a Turkish side now with just one win in five.

The tone was set for a difficult evening for the visitors as the hosts’ 24 year-old light flyweight Santiago Amador dazzled Conquerors’ Tolgahan Ozturk in the opening bout with some trademark fast footwork and rapid combinations. Debutant Ozturk, a last-minute replacement for Hamza Kartal, could find no answer across the five rounds, and a unanimous points decision gave Cuba the 1-0 lead.

The Domadores’ AIBA Youth World Champion Javier Ibanez Diaz, standing in for London 2012 Olympic Champion Robeisy Ramirez, then made a spectacular WSB debut. The bantamweight looked nervous during a tactical opening exchange with Turkey’s Nurettin Ovat, but grew in stature as the contest wore on, and with Ovat first on the floor and then on the ropes in the third round, his corner had no choice but to end the bout early and the hosts found themselves 2-0 up.

The match was put out of reach when Domadores’ London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Yasniel Toledo Lopez out-manoeuvered Yakup Sener with a controlled points win. What followed proved even more emphatic, with Cuban middleweight Arlen Lopez’s landing a perfect left jab early in the second round to secure a quick TKO win over Evren Tibukoglu and have his team cruising at 4-0.

A superb duel between two tough heavyweights rounded off the night in Havana, with Domadores’ Frank Sanchez and Conquerors’ Seyda Keser both going into the ring undefeated in Season VI. The Cuban, one of the hardest hitters in the weight class, managed to keep Keser’s attacks at bay and his stamina ultimately proved decisive, earning a deserved points win and Cuba a third whitewash of the season. All eyes will now be back on Havana on 31 March, when the city welcomes Ukraine Otamans for a decisive top-of-the-table clash.

Team Nigeria Shines At ITF/CAT Junior Championships

Team Nigeria underlined an intention for a memorable outing at the 39th ITF/CAT African Junior Championships taking place in Pretoria, South Africa with five of the seven players in action on Saturday bagging impressive wins.

The duo of Gabriel Friday and Barakat Quadri progressed to the last 16 following wins over Assil Boussairy of Morocco and Finatrina Andriamadison of Madagascar.

Sixth-seeded Gabriel, who defeated Cameroun’s Paul Wamba 6-2, 6-3 in his first match in the boys 14&under battled hard to beat Boussairy 7-6, 6-4 while Quadri made light work of Andriamadison 6-2, 6-2 in the girls 14&under.

Other Nigerians that bagged impressive wins on Saturday are Christopher Itodo, who defeated Fabrice Toyishime of Rwanda 6-4, 6-4 in the boys 16&under, while Christopher Bulus also brusshed aside Shaun Adriamaro of Seychelles 6-2 6-0 in the same category.

Michael Osewa also enhanced his chances of progressing to the knockout stage in the boys 14&under by beating Salum Mutabazi of Burundi 6-2 , 6-3. As it stands, Itodo, Bulus and Osewa all need to win their final group matches to qualify to the last 16.

However two Nigerians were forced to swallow the bitter pill of defeats as Marylove Edward and Adetayo Adetunji stumbled 6-2, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-0 against Makayla Lousber and Corin De Waal both of South Africa.

Gabriel and Osewa paired to beat Rushdi/Joseph Cyzia of Sudan 6-1, 6-1 to berth to the quarterfinals of the doubles while Itodo/Bulus will confront Philip Henning and Thando Longwe-Smit of South Africa.

“It was a very good day for Nigeria; most of our players were very impressive in their matches especially Gabriel who played top-class tennis to beat the Moroccan. Even the ITF team are very impressed by his performance,” Nigeria’s coach Mohammed Ubale stated.
