David Richardson Says ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Will Be “Bigger And Better” Than Ever

ICC Chief Executive talks about player behaviour and bowlers with suspected illegal bowling actions

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson believes that “there has been no stone left unturned” as preparations continue ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, but stressed the need for players to remember their responsibilities to uphold the sport’s integrity at all times.

In a candid and wide-ranging interview, Mr Richardson, who featured in the Proteas squad that reached the semi-finals of the competition the last time the event was staged by Australia and New Zealand, in 1992, believes that this will be the best World Cup to date.

And on the eve of the 11th edition of the tournament, Mr Richardson has also strongly reinforced the ICC’s expectations on player behaviour and maintaining the game’s integrity at all times, on and off the field of play.

ICC Cricket world Cup

“Over the last six months, or even going back further to the last Ashes series, there have been too many examples of player behaviour going too far and overstepping the boundaries of acceptabilities. The amount of sledging and disrespect shown by players to each other was bad. Since then, we have done a lot of work with our Umpires and Match Referees to ensure that they are much more pro-active in terms of policing behaviour on the field and when players do over-step the mark, taking appropriate action.

“Over the last three or four months you have seen 12 ICC Code of Conduct charges laid against people for exactly that; disrespectful behaviour on the field. For the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, it will be no different and at all pre-event briefings with the teams, the Match Referees will be making sure that that message is delivered loud and clear.”

In outlining the ICC’s recent worldwide clampdown in dealing with suspected illegal bowling actions, Mr Richardson also outlined the ICC’s position for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

“We want to make sure that we don’t lose ground on what I think has been significant progress over the last few months,” he said. “The game realised that we had a significant problem and there were just too many bowlers, from all teams, bowling with suspected actions. So, I think we have made very good progress in identifying those bowlers, sending them off to be tested and, where necessary, suspending them until they can remedy their actions.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

“There might be one or two (bowlers) who were suspended and who are now coming back into international cricket and the challenge for them will be to make sure that they maintain their remedied action. The instructions to the Match Officials will be no different and these matches will be treated exactly the same as any other international match. And if there are bowlers who are bowling with suspect actions, they might be reported,” he continued.

“The ICC-accredited testing centre in Brisbane is on stand-by so that if somebody is reported early on in the tournament, he can go straight off to Brisbane, get tested within five or six days, and we can have the report so that he can either continue bowling if he’s found to be legal, or if he’s illegal, then he will be suspended.”

With corruption and match-fixing spectres that loom over world sport, Mr Richardson has credited the work of the local agencies, as well as the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), and he believes that the ICC is well-equipped to deal with these threats.

“On the corruption side, it’s safe to say we’re the best prepared we’ve ever been. Our Anti-Corruption personnel have done a lot of work in entering into agreements, associations and arrangements with the local police and law enforcement agencies in both New Zealand and Australia.

“As the years have gone by,” he continued, “Our intelligence and information on who these corruptors are, and who may try and fix matches around the world, has grown. We know exactly where these people are and we have got a list of more than a hundred names that we will be passing on to these law enforcement agencies. It will be very difficult for anybody outside of the game to come and even attempt to try and corrupt players, umpires or anybody involved in the World Cup, to try and fix a match.

“In addition, the New Zealand and Australia governments have introduced specific legislation which makes attempting to fix, or fixing matches, a criminal offence. This enables, not only us (ICC ACSU) but the police themselves to take much more specific and direct action against these people who are trying to corrupt the game.”

Sting Helps John Cena Secure Return Of Fired Trio To WWE

Today we introduce our pro wrestling column, and Shehu Bello has got that covered, you can also follow @Newfanzone on twitter or send us your feed back or sports related write ups and/or press releases to fanzone.fans@gmail.com.

It was an exciting finale to Raw on Monday night. The Evening began with WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar taking to the ring and demanded a fight with Seth Rollins after the Authority favourite son Curb Stomp the champion on Raw last Monday.

However, he was interrupted by John Cena who suffered the same fate in the hands of Rollins. The Cenation leader reiterated his determination to win the WWE World Heavyweight championship match at Royal Rumble and hold it hostage until the Trio of Dolph Ziggler, Ryback and Erick Rowan were reinstated.

WWE World WRESTLING

However, Triple H stated that Cena will get the chance to help his fired colleagues get their jobs back if he won the nights main event, if he failed to triumph, his friends will not only remain fired, but he will also lose the chance to compete for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble.

The night’s main event happened to be a triple threat match which pitched Cena against the trio of Seth Rollins, Kane and Big Show. The fight was more of a beat down than a wrestling match. The Authority trio took turns to dish out punishment to Cena but just as Rollins was about to Curb Stump the powerless former WWE champion, Sting appeared on the giant screen.

WWE WRESTLING

The former WCW icon later appeared on the entrance ramp and distracted the Big Show and Kane long enough for Cena to secure a rollup win on Rollins and help reinstate his fired colleagues.

However, just has Triple H demanded that Sting returned to the Ring, an angry looking Brock Lesnar matched down the entrance and laid waste to the Kane and Big Show but Rollins managed to escape the beast’s rage.

ITF Lists Eight Nigerians for AJC…As 13-year-old McCleod Bags Scholarship To Morocco

As part of rewards for their outstanding performances at 2015 West & Central Africa Junior Circuit which was concluded over the weekend in Togo, eight Nigerians have been listed by the International Tennis Federation for the Africa Junior Championship scheduled for March in Tunisia.

The players that will be flying Nigeria’s flag at the Mediterranean nation are Martins Abamu, Godsgift Timipre, Ayoola Michael and Michael Oshewa (all boys); while the girls’ team will comprise Adetayo Adetunji, Angel McCleod, Barakat Quadri and Timpre Maxwell.

Nigeria topped the medals table of the tournament that featured nine countries with seven gold, four silver and three bronze medals and the nation’s all-round successful campaign was made more colourful by the month-long training scholarship to Morocco awarded to McCleod due to her eye-catching display in the girl’s 16&under category.

“It’s a plus to Nigerian tennis because McCleod has been a shinning example of how our efforts at re-engineering tennis at the junior level is yielding instant dividends,” Nigeria Tennis Federation President, Engr. Sani Ndanusa said in reaction to the development.

Ndanusa pointed that regular tournaments from NNPC, Chevron, SNEPCO, Midwestern Oil & Gas among others, is giving Nigeria an edge over most other African countries.

The 13-year-old McCleod, who recently moved from her base in Dubai to Lagos, was registered for the 16&under category as a way of fast-tracking her development in the game. She is scheduled to travel to Kenya on Friday for the ITF 18&under Circuit which will serve off on Sunday.

Super Falcons

A sports journalist has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to do more for the good of the female football teams in the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Ms Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, a female football aficionado and Change Agent said the Nigeria Football Federation should pay more attention to all the female national teams.

The Award winning journalist implored the Amaju Pinnick led NFF to open the Super Falcons camp within the shortest period of time to enable adequate preparations for the FIFA World Cup which will start on June 6 in Canada; and also expose them to international friendly matches.

“The NFF should please organize as many friendly matches as possible for the women national team, these girls need to start playing competitive matches together as early as possible, they need to bond together and work as a team, ensure a better location for the team to camp for acclimatization, let us start early, the world cup starts in less than five months” Ms Ogunleye-bello said

Aderonke Ogunleye

“I want to plead with the NFF to concentrate more on women’s football, increase their allowance and get them a better welfare package; The Super Falcons who won the Cup of Nations are yet to be hosted by the Nigerian President unlike their male counterpart” she added

“For example, in all of the Super Falcons six world cup appearances, they have made it to group stage five times and quarter finals once and even won the African Cup of Nations nine times above the male team so what we are saying here, they should be celebrated and applauded”

“Maureen Madu was not celebrated when she won the most capped player for the team with 101 caps above Joseph Yobo that was widely celebrated and many more” she concluded

FEI World Cup™ Vaulting 2014/15: Simone Jäiser In Leipzig Fast Lane

Switzerland and Germany dominated the fourth and last qualifier of the FEI World Cup™ Vaulting 2014/15 at Leipzig’s famous Partner Pferd (GER) last weekend, with Simone Jäiser (SUI), Thomas Brüsewitz (GER) and pas-de-deux stars Pia Engelberty and Torben Jacobs (GER) celebrating outstanding victories.

A total of 17 athletes from seven countries battled it out in front of a sold out crowd to score vital selection points for the series Final, which takes place in Graz, Austria’s second largest city after the capital Vienna, on 19-22 February.

Jumping Jäiser

Simone Jäiser, the national Swiss champion and businesswoman by day, celebrated her first win of the series in Leipzig, after placing second at the opener in Munich (GER) and third leg in Salzburg (AUT).

The crowd went wild at her interpretation of a Chinese fighter. “I’m a huge fan of Simone Jäiser, but with this freestyle she has really surpassed herself. She was outstanding,” said German television commentator and former lunger Susanne Wahl.

On her horse Luk, lunged by her mother Rita Blieske, Jäiser finished on 9,003 points, the highest score in Leipzig, with a healthy 168-point lead on reigning FEI World Cup™ Vaulting champion Anna Cavallaro (ITA) lunged by Nelson Vidoni on Harley (8,835), with Christine Kuhirt (GER) placing third on Fuzzy with lunger Stefan Lotzmann (8,310).

With the Final in Graz now just less than a month away, Jäiser is now second in the series standings behind Austria’s Lisa Wild. “The first three places at the Final will be very tight. Everyone will be in top condition. I’m aiming to show clear rounds and now I have no doubts that this will be possible,” said the confident Jäiser, after her spectacular winning performance in Leipzig.

FEI World Cup™ Vaulting

German triple

German vaulters, all protégés of national coach Ulla Range, filled the podium in Leipzig led by Thomas Brüsewitz, twice European Junior Champion (2010 and 2011), who scored 8,686 points on the 24-year-old chestnut gelding Airbus, lunged by Irina Lenkeit.

“Leipzig is my absolute favourite leg of the World Cup,” Brüsewitz said after giving the audience a glimpse of his new 2015 routine. “Before the competition I was unsure if I should go ahead with my new elements, but it worked really well!”

Dresden-born Erik Oese, bronze medalist at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 (FRA), on Down Under, which he borrowed from fellow Wild Card competitor and close friend Daniel Kaiser, finished just 0,008 points behind Brüsewitz with lunger Andreas Bäßler (8,678), with Kaiser securing third place (8,400).

Tarzan and Jane

Austria’s Stefan Csandl and Theresa Thiel slotted into second place in Leipzig behind Germany’s Pia Engelberty and Torben Jacobs, the pas-de-deux silver medalists at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 (FRA). The pair won over the Leipzig crowds with their striking Tarzan and Jane choreography on Danny Boy, lunged by Switzerland’s former world champion Patric Looser, who also won this exciting series twice in a row in 2011 and 2012 before retiring as a vaulter (8,856 points).

Much to the disappointment of this brilliant team, they will unfortunately not be lining up at the series Final next month because the 24-year-old Engelberty has to sit Sports Studies exams at the University of Cologne.
