Cricket followers in the USA will have the chance to watch some of the greatest players in the world this summer in the HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved the staging of Twenty20 (T20) fixtures in the forthcoming 2016 season.
Six fixtures are planned to take place in July, with full fixture and ticket information for the coming season to be announced in due course.
Commenting on the announcement, CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe said: “Today is a landmark day for the CPL and a massive boost for cricket followers across the USA ahead of the CPL Player Draft in Barbados on Thursday.
“This project has been in discussion for many months and we are grateful to the ICC for supporting this move which enables us to step up our planning and open up opportunities for the cricket-hungry American public.
“I would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Dave Cameron and our partners in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in this process. The participation of the ICC Americas team in the recent Nagico Super 50 has proven to be a hugely important step forward and we are committed to providing more opportunities for players and that experience will certainly count for those six ICC Americas players who will be selected in this year’s Draft.
“The CPL has already had a positive impact in the Caribbean and we are excited about bringing top quality cricket to the USA. We are committed to developing the next generation of cricketers and we believe that by exposing the best talent from across the Caribbean and the Americas region in the CPL, we can inspire a new generation of cricketers in the USA.”
ICC Head of Global Development, Tim Anderson, said: “In partnership with the US cricket community the ICC has recently established a strategic framework for the future development of cricket in the USA.
“The staging of high level international cricket is a key part of this strategy, therefore we see the approval of several CPL matches in the USA as a positive step forward for all cricket followers in the US.
“We are also delighted that a number of development activities will take place around the matches, ensuring that the expertise and experience of the CPL players, coaches and officials contributes to the exciting growth of the game in the USA.”
The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that former West Indies captain Richie Richardson has been appointed to the Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. He will replace Sri Lanka’s Roshan Mahanama, who stepped down last week.
Mr Richardson will take over the match referee’s role after he has finished his current assignment as the West Indies cricket team manager, which will end with the Sydney Test against Australia starting on 3 January 2016.
Following his appointment, Mr Richardson said: “I am excited and honoured to have been selected for one of the most important jobs in cricket.
“Having been on either side of the fence, first as a player and then as an administrator, I think I have the experience and insight to help me contribute positively alongside some of the finest and most experienced match officials. Obviously, I look forward to working and learning from my colleagues as we all continue to strive for excellence.
“Until the end of the Australia tour, I will remain fully committed and focused on my current assignment as the West Indies cricket team manager and I would like to thank the West Indies Cricket Board for its support over years as well as the encouragement it provided to me in taking up this new role.”
Mr Richardson, 53, represented the West Indies in 86 Tests and 224 One-Day Internationals from 1983 to 1996 in which he scored 5,949 and 6,248 runs, respectively. He captained his side in 24 Tests and 87 ODIs. He played in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1987, 1992 and 1996.
He has been the West Indies cricket team manager since January 2011.
Congratulating Mr Richardson on his appointment, ICC General Manager – Cricket, Geoff Allardice, said: “Richie is one of the greats of the game, who is admired for not only his accomplishments as a batsman but also the way he captained the West Indies when he embodied traits such as integrity, leadership and sportsmanship in his dealings both on and off the field. He is very familiar with the demands of international cricket through his experiences as a player, captain and now team manager, and he will bring a fresh perspective to the role.
“On behalf of the ICC, I congratulate Richie on his appointment and look forward to working with him. We have no doubt that he will make a strong and important contribution to ensuring the game continues to be played in the right spirit.”

Pathway for the region’s best players to play in the WICB’s Nagico Super50 and the Caribbean Premier League
The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that a cricket Combine will take place in Indianapolis, USA, in September to select an ICC Americas representative team.
This team will play in the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Nagico Super 50 tournament during January 2016, with an opportunity for the best performing players to then trial for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
The Combine will have two phases, with Phase 1 being an open trial. All eligible players* in the Americas region can apply online by clicking here for the opportunity to be selected to attend the trial that will take place at the World Sports Park in Indianapolis from 18 to 21 September.
The best players from Phase 1 will then be invited to attend Phase 2 of the Combine from 24 to 27 September, after which the ICC Americas team will be selected. Some players identified through previous ICC Americas events will be invited to attend Phase 2 automatically.
“It’s exciting that the ICC, in cooperation with the WICB, is able to provide this opportunity to the best cricketers in the Americas region,” said ICC’s Head of Global Development, Tim Anderson.
“The region is full of talented cricketers, with many in the USA and Canada, and through the innovative open trial we hope to uncover some stars of the future.”
WICB President Dave Cameron said: “The WICB takes its role to assist the development of cricket in the Americas region seriously, and therefore we are delighted to be supporting this initiative.
“The Nagico Super50 and the CPL are important events on our annual calendar, and to extend opportunities to the best players in the Americas to compete in them is the right thing to do in-line with ICC’s strategy to grow cricket beyond its traditional boundaries.”

The ICC Americas region is part of the ICC’s Development Programme, which aims to grow and improve cricket with ICC’s 95 Associate and Affiliate Member countries.
* Only players that meet the ICC eligibility criteria to play for Associate and Affiliate Member countries within the Americas Region will be considered for selection in the open trial and regional team.
