2015 Nigerian Sports Award: Voting Closes Sunday November 15

…As organizers unveil nominees for the Journalists categories.

As the countdown for the 2015 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award continues, the organizers have announced that the voting phase will close as scheduled by midnight of Sunday November 15, 2013.

According to the spokesman for the award and the Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu, the voting phase, which started on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 is expected to close as stipulated in the timelines of the 2015 award.

Idowu urged sports loving Nigerians who still wish to vote for their Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year to take the opportunity of the remaining few days to do so before the deadline.

He noted that interested members of the public should send SMS SMOTY for Sportsman of the Year or SWOTY for Sportswoman of the Year and the name of the athlete to 33140 or nominate through twitter using the hashtag #SWOTY or #SMOTY and the name of choice winner to @ngrsportsaward.

In the meantime, the panel of the Nigerian Sport Award has released the list of shortlisted nominees for the media categories of 2015 Nigerian Sport Award.

For the Sport Journalist of the Year (Print) category, Oludare Shina of Goal.com, Tana Aiyejina of The Punch Newspaper, Johnny Edwards Complete Sports and Kayode Ogundare i-Soccer while Ganiyu Yusuf of the Complete Sport, Bola Omilabu of the Nation and SportingLife Newspaper battles John Ebota of The Nation, Segun Ogunfeyintimi and Akeem Salawu of The Vanguard Newspaper for the Photo Journalist of the year.

The Radio Sport Journalist of the Year, last year’s winner Godwin Enakhena, Top Radio was shortlisted alongside with Murphy Djemba of Brila FM, Chinasa Ibonye, City FM and Udeme George, Love FM,Abuja.

The nominees of 2015 Nigeria Sport Award include Miyen Akiri of Galaxy TV, Mosez Praiz of Supersports and Austin Okon-Akpan of Channels TV.

The 2015 Nigerian Sports Award event is schedule to hold on Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Marquee, Oceanview, Eko Hotel Lagos.

As the 2015 edition of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award enters its voting phase, the organisers of the award, Unmissable Incentives Limited has unveiled the list of the top three nominees in each category of the award.

Speaking at the press conference, the Chairman of the Award Panel, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo explained that the top nominees emerged having recorded highest frequency of nominations by the members of the public for their outstanding performances in their respective sports.

“The shortlisted nominees for the 2015 edition of the award is a true reflection of the majority wish of the Nigerians as expressed through nominations for the different categories during the nomination phase’’ he said.

Isiguzo reiterated that an athlete is only eligible to win the Nigerian Sports Award if members of the public nominate him or her during the nomination phase for the award during the year of the award.

Speaking shortly before announcing the top nominees, the Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu noted that the long list of nominations was painstakingly scrutinized by the panel to shortlist the top nominees.

Unveiling the nominees, Kayode Idowu noted that two times winner of the Ball Sports Person of the Year, Aruna Quadri was re-nominated for the category alongside the duo of Chamberlain Oguchi and Olumide Oyedeji who are members of the victorious National Basketball team, D’ Tigers that won the just concluded FIBA Africa tournament.

Idowu announced that the Coach of the National Men’s Basketball team, William Voight will be competing with Are Feyisetan, Nigerian Powerlifting Coach and the Women Cycling Coach, Bashir Mohammed for the Coach of the Year category.

Nigerian Wrestler, Boltic Sinivie, tackles Efe Ajagba (Boxing) and Henry Hendrix (Kungfu) are the top three nominees for the Combat Sport Person of the Year while Awoniyi Taiwo (Football), Kelechi Nwanaga (Javeline), Amusan Tobiloba (Hurdles) top nominations for the Discovery of the Year category.

In the football category, Asisat Oshoala, Desire Oparanozie and Ngozi Okobi are contesting for the Footballer of the Year (Women) category while Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa and the top scorer, in the ongoing 2015 professional football league, Tunji Adeniji are the top nominees for the Footballer of the Year (Men).

Idowu also revealed that World record breakers at the just concluded All African Games, Yakubu Adesokan, Loveline Obiji, will slog it out with Lovina Onyegbule for the Special Sport Person of the Year while the President of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali battles Director General of the National Sports Commission, Yakmut Alhassan for the Sports Administrators of the Year category.

Weightlifter, Balqis Otunla tackles Loveline Obiji and Lovina Onyegbule for the Sports Woman of the Year award while Yakubu Adesokan, Chamberlain Oguchi and Aruna Quadri are the top three nominees for the Sports Man of the Year.

For the School Sports Award, Eyeanugie Primary School, Edo state, winners of the Channels kid cup 2015, Rochas Okorocha Foundation College, winners of Shell cup 2015 battles the former winner of the category, Greensprings College for the award.

The Nigerian Men Basketball Award team, D’Tigers, the Women Cycling Team and Beach Volleyball team are the three top nominees for the Team of the Year category.

Kelechi Nwanaga (Javeline), Uke Claire (Discuss), Tosin Oke (Triple Jump) a gold medalist at the just concluded All African Games are the top three contenders for the Track and Field Star of the year while Mariam Usman battles Balqis Otunla for the weightlifter of the Year award.

The public voting for Sportsman and Sportswoman commences on Wednesday 7th of October 2015 and will end on Sunday 15th November 2015. Organizers of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award, Unmissable Incentives Limited have announced that the nominations of Sportsmen and Women for the different categories of awards for the 2015 edition would close on Saturday, September 26, 2015

Kayode Idowu, Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, disclosed this in Lagos on Monday while briefing the media on developments on the 2015 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award.

Idowu revealed that the nominations for this year’s edition of the award was deliberately prolonged to close after the just concluded All African Games to accommodate the different major sporting activities for the year.

“In the past, we have had instances where some Nigerian Sportsmen and Women recorded some outstanding performances during the course of the award year but couldn’t make it into nominations. This is why we decided to ensure that nominations for this year closes at the end of all the major sporting events” he said.

He then used the opportunity to commend and congratulate the Nigerian athletes to the just concluded All African Games for the outstanding performance and medal haul at the tournament.

He also commended the Nigerian Basketball Team, D’Tigers for winning the recently concluded FIBA Africa Basketball competition and picking the ticket to compete in the Basketball event at the next Olympic games billed to hold in Rio, Brazil.

Idowu called for Nigerians to seize the opportunity of the remaining few days to nominate their favourite Nigerian athletes who have recorded excellent performances in their various sports during the course of the year.

It would be recalled that the nominations phase of the 2015 edition of the award opened on June 4th, 2015. Verification of entries by the Auditors would hold between September 26th and 28th while the announcement of final shortlist would be made public on October 6th.

The nominations for the 2015 edition of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award are now open as the organizers- Unmissable Incentives Limited unfolds the plans for the 4th edition of the award.

Speaking at a press conference held in Lagos, on Thursday, the chairman of the award panel, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo disclosed that the 2015 edition of the award promises to be more eventful than the previous editions.
He noted that the panel is set to introduce some new activities which include the Nigerian Sports Dialogue and Legacy Project for the winners of the Lifetime Award to further promote sports development in the country.

Isiguzo who is also the chairman, editorial board of Vanguard Newspaper, described the proposed Nigerian Sports Dialogue which is scheduled to hold sometimes in August 2015 as an avenue for the Nigerian sports stakeholders to converge and deliberate on issues bothering on sports development in Nigeria.
Also speaking at the press conference, the General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Sope Durodola revealed that 19 categories will be awarded in the 2015 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award. He also hinted that the Award ceremony will be held in Lagos on the 13th of November at a yet to be disclosed venue.

According to Durodola, the categories includes; Ball Sports Person of the Year (Tennis, Table tennis, Basketball, handball) ,Coach of the Year, Combat Sports Person of the Year (Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Boxing ),Discovery of the Year, Footballer of the Year (Women),Footballer of the Year (Men) ,Special Sports Person of the Year, Sports Administrator of the Year and Sports Governor of the Year.

Others are; Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year (Radio), Sports Journalist of the Year (TV), Sports Journalist of the Year (Print), Sports Photo Journalist of the Year, School Sport Award, Team of the Year, Track and Field Star of the Year and Weightlifter of the Year.
On the nomination process for the 2015 edition, Durodola announced the inclusion of the social media platforms of Twitter and Facebook in addition to the nomination via the award website to enable more participation.

“In the last three editions of the award, the nominations were only through our website , but this year, we have expanded the platform for nominations to include Twitter and Facebook, while we will also print some hard copies of the nomination forms , which will be submitted at the Sport Ministry (State & Federal) and Sports Federations for the interest of people who may prefer hard copy nominations”.

The 2014 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award has entered the voting phase as the top three nominees for each of the different categories of the award have emerged. The list of the top three nominees for all the categories of the award was unveiled at a Press conference on Thursday by the organisers of the Award.

Addressing the media, the General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu noted that the panel received overwhelming nominations for the 2014 editions of the award from members of the public adding that it was a tough job for the collating to select the top 3 nominees for each category.

According to Idowu, Nigeria’s golden girl, Blessing Okagbare and Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama top the nomination chat as both of them were nominated in two categories.

In the Ball Sports category, high flying Table Tennis player Aruna Quadri, who won the award last year, is nominated alongside another sensational table tennis player: Segun Totiola and Onaolapo Ojo while Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume are the only two nominated for the track and field award.

Coach of the Falconets, Peter Dedevoh, Manu Garba and Stephen Keshi are the three nominees for the Coach of the Year Award.

For the Team of the Year Award The Falconet, Super Eagles and Golden Eaglets are the nominees.

Vincent Enyeama, Ogenyi Onazi and Osaze Odewinge are the three nominees for the Sportsman of the Year while Blessing Okagbare, Asisat Osoala and Courtney Dike are to slug it out for the Sportswoman of the Year Award.

The three Governors; Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State and Liyel Imoke of Cross River State who were nominated for the Sports Governor of the Year Award last year still emerged the nominees for the 2014 edition.

For Boxing Star of the Year Award, Ekpo Isaac, Efe Ajagba and Efetobor Akpochi are the top nominees.

Wrestler duo of Aminat Adeniyi and Odunayo Adekuroye were nominated with Teakwando Star- Chika Chukwumerije for the Combat Sports Star of the Year Award.

In the Discovery of the Year category Asisat Oshoala battles Ese Brume and Courtney Dike for the honour while Maryam Usman and Oluwatoyin Adesanmi were nominated for the Weightlifting award of the Year.

Nominees for other categories include Aminu Maigari, Solomon Ogba and Waheed Enitan Oshodi (Administrator of the Year), Green Springs School, Lekki, Toybat international school, Lagos and ST Barnabas, Ilorin (School Sports Award) while Esther Oyeama, Loveline Obiji, and AbdulAzeez Ibrahim made the shortlist for the Special Sports Person of the Year Award.

In his own remarks at the Press conference, the Chairman of the Award Panel, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo stated that public voting is open for the Sportsman and Sportswoman categories while other category winners would be decided by the panel.

Isiguzo explained that voting will be via SMS at the cost of N50 per SMS and for participants to vote, they would be required to text the abbreviation of the category to 33140.

For instance, the public will text SMOTY and SWOTY to 33140 Plus the name of their Favourite nominated sportsman or sportswoman award of the year respectively.

He announced that voting will commence on Thursday the 18th of September, 2014 and end on the 2nd November, 2014

The organizers of the Nigeria Spots Award (NSA), Unmissable Incentives Limited has commended the Nigeria Track and Field Queen, Blessing Okagbare for winning the 100m gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and setting a new game record of 10.85 seconds.

Okagbare, who won the Track and Field Star and Sports Woman of the Year awards at the 2013 edition of the Nigeria Sports Awards, has been in fantastic form this year with an outstanding performance at the IAAF Diamond League and other competitions preceding the Commonwealth Games.

According to the General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu, Blessing Okagbare has justified her place in history and also justified winning the Track and Field Star and the Sport Woman of the Year awards last year. She has also justified the investment of the Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan led Delta State Government.

Commonwealth Games 2014: NSA Charges Nigerian Athletes

Unmissable Incentives Limited-the organisers of the Nigerian Sports Award (NSA) has charged the Nigerian Athletes to the 2014 Commonwealth Games billed to hold between July 23 and August 3, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland to give their all and bring home as many gold medals as possible.

Kayode Idowu, General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited disclosed that Nigerians have great expectations from the Nigerian Athletes at the competition after the not too impressive performance of the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the just concluded World Cup.

‘’ After the lacklustre performance of our Football team at the World Cup, Nigerians have now turned their attention to the 2014 Commonwealth Games with high hopes that our athletes will do us proud by giving a good account of themselves” he said.

Idowu stressed further that Nigeria has a good track record in Athletics, Boxing, Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Paralympics having won several laurels at not only the African Games and the Commonwealth Games but also at the Olympics.

He declared that with the level of preparedness put in place by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the coaching crew and the Athletes for the 2014 Commonwealth Games is unprecedented and a clear indication that the country is poised for success at the Games.

“I must admit that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has really raised the bar with good planning and preparation for this competition. At least for the first time in our history, we have a robust and well thought out programme and as such we expect the best” he added.

Nigerian Athletes will be competing for honours in different sports including Athletics, Boxing, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Shooting, Wrestling, Power-lifting and Paralympics.

Nigerian Sports Award Hails Blessing Okagbare for Diamond League Triumph

Unmissables Incentives Limited – organisers of the Nigerian Sports Award has commended Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare for her outstanding performance at the ongoing Shanghai Diamond League.

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare who is also the reigning fastest woman in Africa displayed an excellent performance at the event setting new records and winning the Women’s Long Jump and 200 metres events.

Blessing Okagbare won the Sportswoman of the Year and the Track & Field Star of the Year awards at the 2013 edition of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award for her exploits and excellent performance in the world of sport.

In line with its main strategic thrust of rewarding and supporting excellence performance in sports, the organisers of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award has thrown its weight behind the 2014 edition of the Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Cup with the donation of all the medals and trophies that will be given out in the competition.

The Nigerian Sports Award (NSA) is donating a total of 120 medals; Trophies for the first, second and third placed teams, Trophies for the Most Valuable Player (MVP), the Highest Goal Scorer and the Best Goalkeeper as well as Plaques for the Best Coach and Best Supporters Club at the end of the competition.

Speaking on the development, the General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited, the organisers of the award, Mr. Kayode Idowu disclosed the Nigerian Sports Award is supporting the SWAN cup with Trophies as a way of rewarding sports excellence which is in line with its creed.

Mr. Kayode Idowu also stated that the drive to use Awards as a form of stimulating growth in Nigerian Sports is the key motivating factor for providing all the medals and trophies that will be won during the 2014 SWAN Cup competition.

He further explained that the gesture is also in recognition and a reward to the Sports Writers for their immense contribution and support for the Nigerian Sports Award and overall sports development in Nigeria.

The Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Cup is an annual competition organized by the association for its members to promote sporting activities and encourage bonding and build team spirit.

Lagos Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Week 2014 kicks off on the 24th of April 2014 with a Novelty match between Team LAGOS SWAN AND TEAM NOLLYWOOD at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium Surulere Lagos.

Nigerian Sports Award: 2014 Edition to Hold November 13

The organizers of the Nigerian Sports Award, Unmissable Incentives Limited has announced that the third edition of the prestigious award will hold on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the Muson Centre, Onikan Lagos.

According to the General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu, the 2014 edition of the award promises to be better than the two previous editions as the award is now widely recognized and a desirable recognition among Nigerian sports men and women.

Idowu noted that the 2014 award will be unprecedentedly and exceptionally exciting due to the fact that the year is a very busy sporting year with the Nigerian teams participating in several sporting competitions including Commonwealth Games, FIFA U-17 Women Football Championship and the Brazil 2014 World Cup taking place during the course of the year.

“This year’s edition of the award is expected to be very interesting not only because it is the year of the World Cup but also because of other competitions like the Commonwealth Games, the FIFA U-17 Women Football Championship and of course the performance of the Nigerian athletes in their respective clubs” he said.

Speaking on what to expect at this year’s event, Idowu stated that the 2013 edition has really raised the bar and set a standard which the organisers must not only match but exceed in terms of the setting and organization as well as free flow of the event which was described by many as world class.

“We must ensure we sustain the euphoria and the momentum generated by the 2013 edition of the award and the pouring commendations from all nooks and crannies. Hence, this year’s event must surpass the achievement of last year”.

A total of 14 categories of the award which includes the Sportsman of the Year Award, Sportswoman of the Year Award, Footballer of the Year Award (Male & Female), Ball Sports Person of the Year Award, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, Discovery of the Year, Track & Field Star of the Year, School Sports Award, Administrator of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year (Print & Electronic) and Sports Governor of the Year award would be on the offering for this year’s award.
