England Needs To Beat West Indies To Retain Third Test Spot

Anderson set to become 13th Englishman to complete century of Tests, four wickets shy of becoming leading wicket-taker for his country

After an enthralling and exciting ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, the focus now shifts to the traditional format of the game when the West Indies and England go head to head in a three-Test series which starts in Antigua on Monday.

England is currently sitting in third place on 104 ratings points, while the West Indies is in eighth spot on 76 ratings points. This gap of 28 ratings points means England is expected to win the series convincingly, and because the rankings are weighted to reflect this difference, failure to win comfortably will mean Alastair’s Cook’s side will drop points.

A 1-0 series win for England will only help it to retain its pre-series ranking but a 1-1 draw will mean it will drop behind Pakistan in fourth position. A 2-0 win will earn England one ratings point, while it will move to 106 ratings points in case of a 3-0 series win.

In contrast, eighth-placed West Indies, currently 17 ratings points adrift of seventh-ranked India, will be aiming to narrow the gap with Virat Kohli’s side. A 3-0 whitewash will help the West Indies close the gap by eight ratings points on the rankings table with England dropping to fifth and just one ratings point ahead of sixth-ranked Sri Lanka (96).

A 2-0 series win will advance Denesh Ramdin’s men up seven rankings points to 83, with England slipping to fifth position on 98 ratings points. A 1-0 series win for the West Indies will mean it will move to 82 ratings points, while the West Indies will join England on 99 ratings points but will be ranked above the Black Caps when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

Reliance ICC Player Rankings

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is the highest-ranked batsman in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen. The 40-year-old currently sits in seventh position on 834 points, five points adrift of New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Chanderpaul’s highest Test ranking came in July 2008 when he occupied the top spot in the summit.

England’s Joe Root is on a career-high 10th position and will be looking to close the 16-point gap on Australia’s David Warner. Ian Bell (20th) is the only other batsman from either side inside the top 20, while the next highest-ranked batsmen from either side, who are likely to feature in the series are Cook (25th), Gary Ballance (29th), Marlon Samuels (31st) and Darren Bravo (32nd).

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, fourth-ranked James Anderson will become the 13th Englishman to complete a century of Tests when he will take the field for the Antigua Test. Anderson is just three wickets shy of equaling Ian Botham’s Test record haul of 383, a feat which the legendary all-rounder achieved in 102 Tests from 1977-92.

Anderson is currently on 806 points, one behind Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath, and will be aiming to celebrate the Test by returning inside the top three.

Anderson is joined in the top 10 by his team-mate Stuart Broad who is sitting in eight position and will be eyeing to leapfrog South Africa’s Vernon Philander.

West Indies’ Kemar Roach is ranked ninth, 15 ratings points behind Broad, while left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn (20th) is the next highest-ranked bowler in the series.

Broad in fourth spot is the leading all-rounder on either side in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test All-rounders heading into the three-match series.

Australia Puts Its Number-one Ranking On The Line As ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Starts On Saturday

Only 26 ratings points separate the top eight-ranked ODI sides

De Villiers enters as the top-ranked batsman, Steyn as highest-ranked bowler and Shakib as number-one all-rounder in cricket’s pinnacle 50-over tournament

Australia will launch its campaign to win its fifth ICC Cricket World Cup title when it enters the 11th edition of the game’s pinnacle 50-over tournament as the number-one-ranked side on the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings.

Australia will feature on the opening day of the tournament on 14 February in Melbourne when it locks horns with England, which currently sits in fifth position. Earlier on the same day in Christchurch, co-host and sixth-ranked New Zealand will go head to head with former champion and fourth-placed Sri Lanka, with just five ratings points separating the two sides.

Australia enjoys a comfortable six-point advantage over its closest rival and defending champion India, which squares off against traditional rival and seventh-ranked Pakistan in Adelaide. Also on Sunday, 15 February in Hamilton, third-ranked South Africa takes on continental rival Zimbabwe, which is currently sitting in 10th position and trailing the title favourites by 55 ratings points.

Two-time former champion and eight-ranked West Indies will meet 12th-ranked Ireland in Nelson on Monday, 16 February with 60 ratings points separating the two sides.

Australia had also started as the top-ranked side in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in the subcontinent. However, it was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side that lifted the trophy in Mumbai after entering the competition in second position and 12 ratings points behind Australia.

Australia not only has the home advantage this time around, it is also enjoying a winning momentum, having won 17 ODIs with just five defeats and one no-result since January 2014. However, this dominance is not as strongly reflected in the Reliance ICC ODI Players Rankings which includes five Australia batsmen (George Bailey (11th), Aaron Finch (12th), Glenn Maxwell (17th), Shane Watson (19th) and James Faulkner (22nd)) and two bowlers (Mitchell Johnson (fifth) and Mitchell Starc (seventh)) inside the top 25.

Australia batsmen sitting just outside the top 25 are captain Michael Clarke (27th), David Warner (28th) and Steven Smith (29th).

Virat Kohli and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are India’s highest-ranked batsman and bowler in third and 13th positions, respectively. Other India batsmen to feature inside the top 25 include Shikhar Dhawan (seventh), Dhoni (ninth), Rohit Sharma (13th) and Suresh Raina (25th). Apart from Kumar, India boasts Ravindra Jadeja (14th), Ravichandran Ashwin (21st) and Mohammad Shami (24th) inside the top 25.

South Africa also has a notable presence in the Reliance ICC ODI Player Rankings.

Captain AB de Villiers leads the batting table, closely followed by Hashim Amla with Quinton de Kock (10th) and Faf du Plessis (20th). Dale Steyn will start as the highest-ranked bowler in the bowler in tournament in third position, followed by Morne Morkel (10th) and Imran Tahir (11th).

New Zealand has played 14 ODIs in the past couple of months and has won nine matches. This is also reflected in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings with Kane Williamson (sixth) and Ross Taylor (eighth) featuring the top 10 of the batting table and Kyle Mills (20th) and Daniel Vettori (23rd), who is playing in his fifth Cricket World Cup, occupying positions inside the top 25 bowlers.

Joe Root is England’s highest-ranked batsman in 14th position, while James Anderson is sitting in fifth position on the bowlers’ chart. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq is his country’s highest-ranked batsman in 14th position, while 15th-ranked Mohammad Irfan will spearhead the bowling attack.

Sri Lanka’s old war horses, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena, who will retire at the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, will begin in fourth and 22nd position, respectively, with Tillakaratne Dilshan (fifth) and captain Angelo Mathews (16th) sitting between the two batting stars. Rangana Herath (eighth), Sachithra Senanayake (17th) and Mathews (22nd) are the top-ranked Sri Lanka bowlers.

Among the four qualifiers, Ireland’s Paul Stirling will start as the highest-ranked batsman in 36th position, while Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi is the highest-ranked bowler and all-rounder in 31st and eighth spots, respectively.

Sangakarra Returns To Top Of ICC Test Batting Rankings…

Sri Lanka star Kumar Sangakarra has returned to the top of the Reliance ICC Test Players Rankings following the completion of the second Test in Wellington, which host New Zealand won by 193 runs.

Despite 2-0 series defeat, Sangakarra’s knocks of 203 and five have seen him replace South Africa’s AB de Villiers at the top of the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen, where he is one point clear on 909 points.

Kane Williamson of New Zealand has jumped seven places to a career-best ranking of seventh in the batting rankings following his scores of 69 and 242 not out. In achieving his highest Test score to date, Williamson also passed the 3,000 runs mark, reaching 3,034 runs in 39 Tests.

Following South Africa’s eight-wicket victory over West Indies in Cape Town, Marlon Samuels has vaulted seven places to 31st in the batting rankings after knocks of 43 and 74. Dean Elgar has also moved up two places to a career high 48th, while other upwards movers following this Test, which helped the Proteas secure a 2-0 series win, include Denesh Ramdin (up three places to 59th) and Leon Johnson, who is the highest climber, moving up 25 places to a career-high 70th after scores of 54 and 44.

Meanwhile, following Saturday’s drawn Test in Sydney that ensured a 2-0 series victory over India, Australia captain Steven Smith has leap-frogged Angelo Mathews into a career-high fourth place in the batting table after scores of 117 and 71. For India, Virat Kohli moved up three places to 12th after scores of 147 and 46, while Australia opener Chris Rogers has moved up six places into 18th position after scores of 95 and 56.

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, New Zealand’s Trent Boult returned match figures of four for 130 runs to help his side to victory over Sri Lanka and improve his ranking by one place to sixth on 795 points, nine adrift of Australia’s Mitchell Johnson.

India’s Mohammed Shami has risen seven places to a career-high 31st place after taking match figures of six for 145 runs, while Australia’s Mitchell Starc has moved up nine places to 33rd after returning five wickets for 142 runs. New Zealand’s Doug Bracewell has moved up nine places to 39th, with Sri Lanka’s Seranga Lakmal moving up two places to a career-high 48th. South Africa’s Dale Steyn still heads the bowling rankings and holds a commanding 79 points lead over second-placed Ryan Harris.

Smith And Mccullum Lead Batsmen’s Charge In Latest ICC Player Rankings

Smith and McCullum lead batsmen’s charge in latest ICC player rankings…Harris, Yadav, Shami and Hazlewood also on the move

ICC

Australia captain Steven Smith has led the batsmen’s charge in the latest Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen following the conclusion of Boxing Day Tests.

New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in Christchurch, while Australia and India Test in Melbourne and South Africa and West Indies Test in Port Elizabeth ended in draws.

Smith, who scored a Test best 192 in the first innings, has gained two places to claim fifth spot for the first time in his career. He now trails number-one ranked AB de Villiers, who has regained the top spot from Kumar Sangakkara, by 40 ratings points.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum and Virat Kohli are the other batsmen inside the top 20 to make upward movements. McCullum, who scored 195, has achieved a career-best 12th position by climbing two places. Kohli’s contributions of 169 and 54 have earned him four places and has put him in 15th place.

Also moving in the right direction are Chris Rogers of Australia (24th, up by four places), Ajinkya Rahane (26th, up by 15 places), Kraigg Brathwaite (37th, up by 11 places), Marlon Samuels (37th, up by seven places) and Dean Elgar (50th, up by 13 places).

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, Australia’s Ryan Harris has moved up two places to second following his six wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), while Trent Boult has achieved a best-ever ranking of seventh after rising two places. Boult had figures of three for 25 and four for 100.

Bowler outside the top 20 and moving in the right direction include Neil Wagner (22nd, up by two places), Umesh Yadav (36th, up by eight places), Mohammad Shami (38th, up by eight places), Josh Hazlewood (53rd, up by 16 places) and Imran Tahir (58th, up by six places).

Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings,

Dale Steyn has retained his number-one ranking and is ahead of Harris by 54 ratings points.

There is no change to the top five in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test All-Rounders. Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh leads the field, followed by Vernon Philander of South Africa and India’s Ravichandran Ashwin.

Meanwhile, South Africa is just a draw away from retaining the Reliance ICC Test Championship mace and with it winning a cash award of USD500,000. If South Africa draws the Cape Town Test and Australia wins in Sydney, then South Africa will finish on 122 ratings points, compared to Australia’s 119 ratings points.

However, if the West Indies wins in Cape Town Test and Australia wins in Sydney, then Australia will finish ahead of South Africa by a fraction of a point (0.2).

The side that will finishes second will pocket USD390,000, while England and Pakistan have been guaranteed USD280,000 and USD170,000 after sealing third and fourth positions, respectively, following the Christchurch Test result.

The annual cut-off for the Reliance ICC Test Championship is 1 April 2015. But with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 to be played from 14 February to 29 March 2015, the current Test series are the last for the season.
