Barewa RFC have been stripped off their title as the 2015 northern rugby union league champions following their demand for the sum of N0.6million to participate in the inaugural Super Cup.
The announcement was made following the outcome of an emergency meeting called by Honorable Mustafa Allahdey subcommittee chairman on technical issues of the NRFF, a verdict was reached in accordance to the NRFF constitution governing its tournament which says ‘any team who forfeits its place in a tournament for any reasons will automatically be replaced by a next inline team’
the Honorable expressed his displeasure saying ‘The Super Cup is an NRFF event captured in its calendar and It is highly disappointing and unacceptable of Barewa RFC to try and hold the federation to ransom despite having been offered a subsidy. If they do not see the Super Cup as a step forward and honor our invitation, then someone is sending a wrong signal around to the entire Rugby world that they are not ready to advance our sport to the next level”
The Nigeria Ruby Football Federation announced the Super cup which will be staged annually to determine the national champions from the various regional leagues as part of its calendar in 2015 at its 2014 annual general assembly and chose Lagos State as the inaugural host for the event.
Kaduna RFC who were the runners up of the 2015 northern league will replace Barewa RFC to face Cowrie RFC whom are the southern champions.
The Nigeria Rugby Super Cup 2015 is scheduled to hold on the 27th of February 2016 in Lagos.
