Dalong, Yakmut, Others Confirms for 2015 Nigerian Sports Award…As Supersports Beams Event Live

The newly appointed Honourable Minister of Youth & Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalong and the Director General, National Sports Commission, Alhassan Yakmut are among dignitaries that have confirmed to grace the 2015 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award slated for this Friday, November 20, 2015.

The spokesman for the award and the Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu, disclosed this immediately after the final meeting of the panel held on Tuesday November 17, 2015 in Lagos.

“I am very proud to announce to you that the new Minister of Youth & Sports Barrister Solomon Dalong and the Director General of the National Sports Commission have confirmed to be at the event on Friday” he said.

Idowu noted that the organizers and the award panel are very excited that the Honourable Minister has chosen the 2015 Nigerian Sports Award event as his first major official event.

He also revealed that several other dignitaries including State Governors, Commissioners, Captains of Industries, past and present athletes as well as Nigerian top celebrities have confirmed to attend the event.

Meanwhile, Idowu also hinted that the leading Sports TV Channel- Supersport is set to cover and broadcast the event live for two hours on Supersports 9 with several repeat broadcast.

2015 Nigerian Sports Award: Voting Closes Sunday November 15

…As organizers unveil nominees for the Journalists categories.

As the countdown for the 2015 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award continues, the organizers have announced that the voting phase will close as scheduled by midnight of Sunday November 15, 2013.

According to the spokesman for the award and the Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu, the voting phase, which started on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 is expected to close as stipulated in the timelines of the 2015 award.

Idowu urged sports loving Nigerians who still wish to vote for their Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year to take the opportunity of the remaining few days to do so before the deadline.

He noted that interested members of the public should send SMS SMOTY for Sportsman of the Year or SWOTY for Sportswoman of the Year and the name of the athlete to 33140 or nominate through twitter using the hashtag #SWOTY or #SMOTY and the name of choice winner to @ngrsportsaward.

In the meantime, the panel of the Nigerian Sport Award has released the list of shortlisted nominees for the media categories of 2015 Nigerian Sport Award.

For the Sport Journalist of the Year (Print) category, Oludare Shina of Goal.com, Tana Aiyejina of The Punch Newspaper, Johnny Edwards Complete Sports and Kayode Ogundare i-Soccer while Ganiyu Yusuf of the Complete Sport, Bola Omilabu of the Nation and SportingLife Newspaper battles John Ebota of The Nation, Segun Ogunfeyintimi and Akeem Salawu of The Vanguard Newspaper for the Photo Journalist of the year.

The Radio Sport Journalist of the Year, last year’s winner Godwin Enakhena, Top Radio was shortlisted alongside with Murphy Djemba of Brila FM, Chinasa Ibonye, City FM and Udeme George, Love FM,Abuja.

The nominees of 2015 Nigeria Sport Award include Miyen Akiri of Galaxy TV, Mosez Praiz of Supersports and Austin Okon-Akpan of Channels TV.

2015 Nigerian Sports Award: Organizers Unveil Nominees … As Voting Begins

As the 2015 edition of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award enters its voting phase, the organisers of the award, Unmissable Incentives Limited has unveiled the list of the top three nominees in each category of the award.

Speaking at the press conference, the Chairman of the Award Panel, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo explained that the top nominees emerged having recorded highest frequency of nominations by the members of the public for their outstanding performances in their respective sports.

“The shortlisted nominees for the 2015 edition of the award is a true reflection of the majority wish of the Nigerians as expressed through nominations for the different categories during the nomination phase’’ he said.

Isiguzo reiterated that an athlete is only eligible to win the Nigerian Sports Award if members of the public nominate him or her during the nomination phase for the award during the year of the award.

Speaking shortly before announcing the top nominees, the Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu noted that the long list of nominations was painstakingly scrutinized by the panel to shortlist the top nominees.

Unveiling the nominees, Kayode Idowu noted that two times winner of the Ball Sports Person of the Year, Aruna Quadri was re-nominated for the category alongside the duo of Chamberlain Oguchi and Olumide Oyedeji who are members of the victorious National Basketball team, D’ Tigers that won the just concluded FIBA Africa tournament.

Idowu announced that the Coach of the National Men’s Basketball team, William Voight will be competing with Are Feyisetan, Nigerian Powerlifting Coach and the Women Cycling Coach, Bashir Mohammed for the Coach of the Year category.

Nigerian Wrestler, Boltic Sinivie, tackles Efe Ajagba (Boxing) and Henry Hendrix (Kungfu) are the top three nominees for the Combat Sport Person of the Year while Awoniyi Taiwo (Football), Kelechi Nwanaga (Javeline), Amusan Tobiloba (Hurdles) top nominations for the Discovery of the Year category.

In the football category, Asisat Oshoala, Desire Oparanozie and Ngozi Okobi are contesting for the Footballer of the Year (Women) category while Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa and the top scorer, in the ongoing 2015 professional football league, Tunji Adeniji are the top nominees for the Footballer of the Year (Men).

Idowu also revealed that World record breakers at the just concluded All African Games, Yakubu Adesokan, Loveline Obiji, will slog it out with Lovina Onyegbule for the Special Sport Person of the Year while the President of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali battles Director General of the National Sports Commission, Yakmut Alhassan for the Sports Administrators of the Year category.

Weightlifter, Balqis Otunla tackles Loveline Obiji and Lovina Onyegbule for the Sports Woman of the Year award while Yakubu Adesokan, Chamberlain Oguchi and Aruna Quadri are the top three nominees for the Sports Man of the Year.

For the School Sports Award, Eyeanugie Primary School, Edo state, winners of the Channels kid cup 2015, Rochas Okorocha Foundation College, winners of Shell cup 2015 battles the former winner of the category, Greensprings College for the award.

The Nigerian Men Basketball Award team, D’Tigers, the Women Cycling Team and Beach Volleyball team are the three top nominees for the Team of the Year category.

Organizers of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award, Unmissable Incentives Limited have announced that the nominations of Sportsmen and Women for the different categories of awards for the 2015 edition would close on Saturday, September 26, 2015

Kayode Idowu, Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, disclosed this in Lagos on Monday while briefing the media on developments on the 2015 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award.

Idowu revealed that the nominations for this year’s edition of the award was deliberately prolonged to close after the just concluded All African Games to accommodate the different major sporting activities for the year.

“In the past, we have had instances where some Nigerian Sportsmen and Women recorded some outstanding performances during the course of the award year but couldn’t make it into nominations. This is why we decided to ensure that nominations for this year closes at the end of all the major sporting events” he said.

He then used the opportunity to commend and congratulate the Nigerian athletes to the just concluded All African Games for the outstanding performance and medal haul at the tournament.

He also commended the Nigerian Basketball Team, D’Tigers for winning the recently concluded FIBA Africa Basketball competition and picking the ticket to compete in the Basketball event at the next Olympic games billed to hold in Rio, Brazil.

Idowu called for Nigerians to seize the opportunity of the remaining few days to nominate their favourite Nigerian athletes who have recorded excellent performances in their various sports during the course of the year.

It would be recalled that the nominations phase of the 2015 edition of the award opened on June 4th, 2015. Verification of entries by the Auditors would hold between September 26th and 28th while the announcement of final shortlist would be made public on October 6th.

AAG: NSA Charges Team Nigeria To Go For Glory

As the 2015 All African Games gathers momentum with participating African countries intensifying training in preparation for the Games, organizers of the Nigerian Sports Award (NSA) have urged the Nigerian contingent to the Games to go for glory at the event by winning all available medals. The All African Games (AAG) also known as Pan-African Games or African Games which takes place every four years, will mark the 11th edition and its 50th anniversary as well as a return to Brazzaville which hosted the first edition in July, 1965, this edition. The 2015 All African Games (AAG) is scheduled to hold between 4th and 19th September 2015 in Brazzaville, Congo. According to Kayode Idowu, the Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives, promoters of the Nigerian Sports Award, the Nigerianathletes must give their all and stay focused, to outshine all comers and improve on previous performances at the Games, to compensate Nigerian Sports fans on the lackluster performance of the Flying Eagles and Super Falcons in recent tournaments.

‘’Nigerians are expecting so much from the Team Nigeria at the forthcoming All African Games, they want to see the team winning all available medals and dominating the different sports that they will be partaking in, to bring smiles to their faces’’ he said. He noted that, though the Nigerian U-23 Football Team under the tutelage of Coach Samson Siasia are drawn in the “group of death” with Ghana, Egypt and Senegal, the team must do everything everything possible to qualify from the group stage. Kayode Idowu also charged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to ensure that the country presents her best legs for the Games and enjoys the needed support from the Commission to excel. Team Nigeria’s participation at the Games would be in 21 out of the total of 32, covering Track & Field, Football, Basketball and Lawn Tennis. The country has participated in 10 editions of the games winning a total of 934 medals, comprised of 334 gold, 305 silver and 295 bronze. The country also emerged winner in 2008 when she hosted the games.

National Sport Commission Pledges Support for Nigerian Sport Award

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has pledged to throw its weight behind the organizers of the Nigerian Sports Award in its quest to inspire outstanding performances in Nigerian sportsmen and women through recognition and reward. The Director General, National Sport Commission, Al-Hassan Yakmut made this known in Abuja recently when he received members of the Award Panel who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

Addressing the members of the Award Panel during the courtesy visit, Yakmut commended the effort of the organizers for remaining steadfast and committed towards the objectives of the Award, which is to reward excellence performance among Nigerian athletes.

The Director General noted that the Nigerian Sports Award could be described as the outsourced aspect of the National Sports Policy, which has provision for Reward & Incentives. He added that the Commission needs to give its maximum support to the initiative especially in line with the Public-Private Partnership drive of the government.

Speaking earlier on the mission of the team to the National Sports Commission, the Chairman of the Award Panel, Ikeddy Isiguzo disclosed that the Panel was in Abuja to congratulate Yakmut on his recent appointment as the Director General and also to deepen the relationship between the Commission and the Nigerian Sports Award.

Isiguzo called for more participation and involvement of the National Sport Commission in the Nigerian Sport Award by making its presence felt during the award Gala Night ceremony which he described as the celebration of the achievements of the sports Ministry.

He used the occasion to announce to the Director General that the 2015 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award would hold at a yet to be made public date in November at the prestigious Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

“We want more presence from the Ministry and the reason is very obvious, whatever anybody says, the Ministry does a lot for the athletes and when we have an event of that magnitude, the presence of the Sports Ministry from the Minister of Sports to the Director General and other key office holders is very important because we are celebrating the achievement of the Ministry’’ he said.

While presenting the Nigerian Sports Award plaque to the Director General as a mark of honour, Mitchel Obi, a member of the Award Panel stated that the appointment of Yakmut is well deserved having come a long way in Nigerian sports from being a Volleyball player to an administrator.

Nigerian Sports Award Set to Honour KAB Olowu, George Ogan, Awoture Elayae

In recognition of their giant strides and contribution to sports development in Nigeria, the Nigerian Sports Award is set to honour three Nigerian sports legends with the life time achievement award at the 2014 edition of the Award scheduled to hold on Thursday 13th of November 2014 at the Muson center Onikan, Lagos.

The three legends to be honored at the Nigerian Sports Award are Pa Karim Ayinla Babalola Olowu fondly called KAB, Dr George Ogan and Dr Awoture Elayae.

KAB Olowu was a member of the first official Nigerian team to participate in the Commonwealth Games, (then called British Empire Games), 1950, Auckland, New Zealand. He featured for Nigeria at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games where he participated in the long jump event and the 4×100 yards relay.

He was also at the 1954 Commonwealth Games in Canada where he won two silver medals in long jump and 400 by 110 yards relay to become the first Nigerian athlete to win two medals at the Commonwealth Games.

KAB who was born on June 7, 1924 is Nigeria’s and probably Africa’s oldest Olympian at the age of 90. An Olympian of note was a touch bearer at Barcelona in the 1992 Olympic Games.

Another sports legend that will receive the lifetime achievement award in sports, Dr. George Ogan was born July 20, 1938. He participated in long jump and triple jump at the National level before representing Nigeria at the 1994 Olympic in Tokyo.

At the 1966 Commonwealth Games in in Kingston, Jamaica, Ogan won the silver medal in triple jump event coming behind was a follow Nigerian Sam Igun who set a new game record to win the gold medal.

Dr Awoture Elayae got a place in the life time achievement award for his great love for sports as an athlete, coach, teacher, lecturer and sports administrator. Dr Elayae who hails from Isoko, Delta State was the coach of the Nigerian team to the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Dr Eleyae was appointed Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa, Africa’s highest sports authority, from 1992 till 2005. He holds the Nigerian National Award of the Officer of the Order of Niger (OON) also the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa Medal of Honour.

Speaking on the Lifetime achievement award, the General Manager, Unmissable Incentive Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu stated that the recipients of the award deserves the honour bestowed on them by the award panel because they committed their lives to the development and growth of sports in Nigeria.

Meanwhile the organizers of the prestigious award has charged the Super Eagles under the new Coach Shuaibu Amodu to go all out and win their last two games to stand a chance to qualify for the African cup of Nations billed for Morocco.

Nominees Emerge As Nigerian Sports Award 2014 Enters Voting Phase…Okagbare, Oshoala, Enyeama Top List

The 2014 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award has entered the voting phase as the top three nominees for each of the different categories of the award have emerged. The list of the top three nominees for all the categories of the award was unveiled at a Press conference on Thursday by the organisers of the Award.

Addressing the media, the General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu noted that the panel received overwhelming nominations for the 2014 editions of the award from members of the public adding that it was a tough job for the collating to select the top 3 nominees for each category.

According to Idowu, Nigeria’s golden girl, Blessing Okagbare and Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama top the nomination chat as both of them were nominated in two categories.

Blessing Okagbare who won double Gold medals at the just concluded Commonwealth Games was nominated for the Track & Field Star of the Year and SportsWoman of the Year Awards while Vincent Enyeama was nominated for the Sportsman of the Year and Footballer of the Year Awards.

Asisat Oshoala, who won the Golden Boot and Ball at the just concluded Women U-20 world Cup, is nominated alongside Desire Oparanozie and Dike Courtney for the Footballer of the Year (Women) category.

In the Ball Sports category, high flying Table Tennis player Aruna Quadri, who won the award last year, is nominated alongside another sensational table tennis player: Segun Totiola and Onaolapo Ojo while Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume are the only two nominated for the track and field award.

Coach of the Falconets, Peter Dedevoh, Manu Garba and Stephen Keshi are the three nominees for the Coach of the Year Award.

For the Team of the Year Award The Falconet, Super Eagles and Golden Eaglets are the nominees.

Vincent Enyeama, Ogenyi Onazi and Osaze Odewinge are the three nominees for the Sportsman of the Year while Blessing Okagbare, Asisat Osoala and Courtney Dike are to slug it out for the Sportswoman of the Year Award.

The three Governors; Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State and Liyel Imoke of Cross River State who were nominated for the Sports Governor of the Year Award last year still emerged the nominees for the 2014 edition.

For Boxing Star of the Year Award, Ekpo Isaac, Efe Ajagba and Efetobor Akpochi are the top nominees.

Wrestler duo of Aminat Adeniyi and Odunayo Adekuroye were nominated with Teakwando Star- Chika Chukwumerije for the Combat Sports Star of the Year Award.

In the Discovery of the Year category Asisat Oshoala battles Ese Brume and Courtney Dike for the honour while Maryam Usman and Oluwatoyin Adesanmi were nominated for the Weightlifting award of the Year.

In his own remarks at the Press conference, the Chairman of the Award Panel, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo stated that public voting is open for the Sportsman and Sportswoman categories while other category winners would be decided by the panel.
