GOtv Boxing Night: Organisers Assure On Adequate Security

Fans coming to watch top class boxing action at GOtv Boxing Night 6 have been assured of adequate security in and around the venue of the event. The assurance was given by Mr. Jenkins Alumona, Managing Director/ Chief Executive of Flykite Productions, organisers of the boxing tourney.

Alumona explained that top-class security, which has been a feature at every edition of the event, will not be relaxed. “This edition falls on Good Friday and we are expecting families to come and enjoy boxing. The security will be tight as it has always been. One of our partners, KSquare Security, is the leading provider of security services for big events in the country. Fans have nothing to fear. The security arrangements will be top-notch,” he said.

GOtv Boxing 6, holds on 25 March at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos. It guarantees the best boxer on the night a cash prize of N1million. The event will feature two title fights and three national challenge duels.

The biggest of the fights will see Nigeria’s Abolaji “Afonja Warrior” Rasheed take on Ghana’s Adjei Sowah in a West African middleweight title fight. In the other big fight, crowd favourite, Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi will attempt to win the West African light welterweight when he takes on Djamiou Ekekpo of the Rebublic of Benin. Also, there will be a national lightweight challenge bout between Otto “Joe Boy” Joseph and Hogan Jimoh Jnr., son of former champion, Hogan Jimoh aka Atomic Bomb.

The three remaining fights will parade five of the graduates of the GOtv NextGen Search, who will make the pro debuts. Michael “Show” Rolland and Nwoye “Lion” Prince face each other in a national lightweight challenge contest, while Saidi “Attacker” Lawal will take on fellow graduate Samuel “Godspower’ Elegbede in a national super middleweight challenge duel. Another super middleweight challenge contest will see Matthew “Wizeman” Obinna take on Yusuf “Koste” Moshood.

Organisers Give Reasons For GOtv Boxing NextGen Search

The organisers of GOtv Boxing Night have explained why they are holding GOtv Boxing NextGen Search, slated to take place in Lagos between 17 and 19 February.

In an interview in Lagos, Jenkins Alumona, CEO Flykite Sports and promoter of GOtv Boxing Night, said GOtv NextGen Search has been conceived to raise a fresh crop of professional boxers to replace the current stars when they eventually hang their gloves.

According to Alumona, GOtv Boxing NextGen Search was conceived to widen access into the professional category for young professional boxers and amateurs aspiring to turn professional. The search, he added, will widen the pool from which boxer for the hugely successful GOtv Boxing Night will be selected.

“GOtv Boxing NextGen Search is being held in association with the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control and it will offer a launch pad into the big time for talented boxers from any part of the country. The event is open to professional boxers and those who wish to turn pro,” explained Alumona.

The event, which will feature five distinguished boxing coaches as judges, will open on 17 February with the unveiling of the partnership between GOtv Boxing Night and the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame at the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame Gym, Olatilewa Street, Surulere, Lagos. The same day, sparring sessions by boxers registered for the event will begin and continue the next day and at the same venue under the watchful eyes of accomplished coaches, who will then select the brightest talents.

The concluding part of event, which will hold at the Old Skool Restaurant of the National Stadium in Lagos, will be devoted to free medical examination for boxers who make the grade. Selected boxers will also have the opportunity of attending a sports /medical seminar to be addressed by famous sports personalities and doctors on how boxers can take care of themselves and grow in the sport.

Each boxer who makes the cut will have his boxing licence paid for by the sponsors, GOtv Boxing Night.

GOtv Boxing Unveils NextGen Search For New Stars

The next generation of professional Nigerian boxing stars is set to be unveiled at the GOtv Boxing NextGen Search, an event billed to hold between 17 and 19 February at the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame Gymnasium on Olatilewa Street, Surulere, Lagos. “We are calling on professional boxers as well as amateurs ready to turn professional from every part of the country to come and show what they can do.

“GOtv Boxing NextGen Search is part of the ongoing plan to revive boxing by widening the access to GOtv Boxing Night, which is broadcast in 47 African countries by SuperSport.

“It is a launch pad to development and sporting stardom for boxers with ability,” explained Alumona.

6th Edition Of GOtv Boxing Night Hold on Good Friday

The sixth edition of GOtv Boxing Night will hold on 25 March, Good Friday. This was disclosed on Tuesday in Lagos by Mr. Jenkins Alumona, Managing Director, Flykite Sports, promoters of the event.

According to Alumona, the forthcoming edition is scheduled to provide top class boxing entertainment during the Easter celebrations, an occasion for the family.

“We have taken into consideration the fact that Easter is about the family, and families require entertainment during the celebrations. We assure boxing fans of top class entertainment, which has been the tradition of GOtv Boxing Night,” he said.

While the fight line-up has not been released, Alumona said boxers to be selected will be the best available. “We are widening our search for talents. Many amateur boxer are ready to turn professional. We will look at the most promising. The selection process will be rigorous. It is the least we can do,” he explained.

He won the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy and a cash prize of N1.5m.

Fan favourite, Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi also defeated Sadiq Ahmed to win the National Welterweight title.

GOtv Boxing Night V: Edo Boy Thanks Organisers

Stanley “Edo Boy” Eribo, who on Saturday, became the national light welterweight boxing champion after he defeated Sunday “Capo” Olalekan by knockout at the GOtv Boxing Night V, which took place at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos has applauded the organisers for making him a millionaire.

Speaking shortly after he was adjuded as the best boxer of the night, Eribo said his emergence was not a fluke, “I want to use this oportunity to thank Flykite Productions for making me a millionare, this is a stepping stone for me and I want to use this platform to become a world champion.”

All Set For GOTV Boxing Night

The fifth edition of the GOtv Boxing Night holds tomorrow at the Indoor Sports Hall of The National Stadium, Lagos.

The event will witness the biggest ever pay-out in the history of Nigerian boxing, as the best boxer on the night will go home with a cash prize of N1.5million and the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy.

GOtv Boxing Night: Skoro Will Fall In Round 5, Boasts Uganda’s Kakembo On Arrival

Ugandan boxer, Edward “Shaka” Kakembo, arrived Lagos on Wednesday ahead of his 26 December African Boxing Union featherweight title fight with Nigeria’s Waidi “Skoro” Usman at the GOtv Boxing Night. Kakembo, who has won all of his nine professional bouts, arrived with his manager, Paul Akoth, a Kenyan.

Speaking on arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Kakembo, the Ugandan Professional Boxing Commission champion, dismissed Skoro’s chances of beating him.

“I have trained so well for this fight to ensure that Skoro is beaten in front of his fans. His defeat will be my Christmas gift to Ugandans. I have seen the tapes of his fight and he will not go beyond round 5,” he boasted with eyes bulging.

His opponent, however, dismissed his boasts as impotent. “Kakembo cannot beat me. Never. He will not last the distance. Saturday is almost here and I will beat him so much that he will be afraid to come back and fight in Nigeria again” Skoro said.

Two other title fights will be staged at the event. Flykite Productions, promoters of GOtv Boxing Night, have announced plans to make the fifth edition, holding on 26 December, a family-friendly one. According to Jenkins Alumona, Flykite Managing Director/CEO, this edition is aimed at giving families fun during the Yuletide holidays. Alumona called on parents to come to the National Stadium in Lagos, venue of the event with their children, who are assured of being given a wide variety of gifts.

“The season calls for giving. We are committed to that. It is why we are inviting parents to let their kids be part of the fun and get gifts. We assure them of security in and around the venue. GOtv Boxing Night V: Capo Eyes National Title, N1.5m Cash Prize

Sunday “Capo” Olalekan, the dreadlocked, hard-punching Light Welterweight boxer, has declared that he will win the National Light Welterweight boxing title at the GOtv Boxing Night on 26 December. He also sees himself winning the N1.5million cash prize for the best boxer of the night.

Capo will be fighting Stanley “Edo Boy” Eribo at the tournament billed to hold at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos. The prize was introduced during the first edition of GOtv Boxing Night in March 2014 and became more attractive when a cash of NI million and the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy were introduced as accompaniments.

GOtv, headline sponsors of the tournament, have added an extra half a million naira for the forthcoming edition.

Speaking in Lagos during the week, Capo, who is currently in a training camp, said: ” I heard that Eribo has been boasting. No problem. He will eat his words at the GOtv Boxing Night. I have beaten better boxers. I do not see how Eribo can stand between me and the title,” he said.

Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, who is seeking to dethrone the National Lightweight boxing champion, Sadiq Ahmed, has declared himself the next champion of the category.

Fijabi will fight Ahmed for the title on the 26th December at the GOtv Boxing Night slated for the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos. Both boxers also have an opportunity to win the N1.5m cash prize attached to the award of the best boxer of the tournament as well as the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy. Fijabi, who won the prize at the July edition of the event said, he is sure of winning the cash prize and the national title.

“I beat Sadiq as an amateur and I will repeat the trick as a pro. I know he is the champion, but his reign will end on Boxing Day. I don’t watch Flloyd Mayweather’s fights for nothing. I am going to practice everything I have learnt from those fights on Sadiq. His reign has ended. This is my time,” he said.

The fight between the two boxers is one of the four bouts scheduled for the event. The headline bout is the African Boxing Union Featherweight duel between Waidi “Skoro” Usman and Kenya’s Michael Nyawade. Also lined up is the National Light Welterweight title decider between Sunday “Capo” Olalekan and Stanley “Edo Boy” Eribo.

The fourth fight, a national Super Middleweight challenge contest, will feature Sunday “Golden Child” Ajuwa and Rasheed “Afonja Warrior” Abolaji.
