First-Time Finalist Beer Beats World’s #1 Pejcic At Bangkok’s 50M Rifle 3 Positions Final

Germany’s 21-year old first-time finalist Jolyn Beer secured an odd-defying victory against the world #1 Snjezana Pejcic of Croatia, at today’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women final at the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.

In spite of her lack of experience, the young German shooter secured Gold with 455.9 points, leaving her Croatian opponent in second place with 454.5 points, 1.4 points behind her.

Beer finished the Kneeling section of the final in third place with 151.8 points, and then climbed up in second at the end of the Prone series with 307.1 points, eventually overtaking Pejcic in the last fraction of the match. She had never won an international competition, before, and she was not event listed in the ISSF World Ranking.

“It’s amazing, it’s my first world cup, and my first medal. I am speechless,” said Beer.

“I was quite confident, anyway. The Kneeling position is my weakest one. I told myself that if I managed do well there, I was going to finish in style. And that’s what happened.”

“The pressure kicked-in at the last shot. I really wanted to beat Snjezana and win the match, but I was afraid to fire a bad shot. I zeroed-in, focusing on the technique, and I made it!”

The 2015 “ISSF Shooter of the Year” Pejcic, 33, had closed the Kneeling and the Prone series in the lead with 154.7 and 308.1 points. Eventually, she took Silver with 454.5 points, scoring two 9.7 out of her last three shots.

She was followed by People’s Republic of China’s Zhang Binbin, an expert 10m Air Rifle shooter participating in her first 3 Positions final today. The 27-year old Chinese shooter jeopardized her chances to finish atop of the podium as she scored an 8.5 on her 44th shot, eventually claiming the Bronze with 444.0 points.

Earlier, today, the 10m Air Pistol Women final ended up in a tough duel between the two-time Olympic Champion Guo Wenjun, 31, from the People’s Republic of China, and the World Rank #11 Tien Chia Chen of Chinese Taipei, 32.

The two athletes moved atop of the table after the first shots, and then exchanged positions several times in first and second place, divided only by a few tenths of a point. When only two shots were left to be fired, Tien Chia Chen had a 0.6 lead over Guo, but she lost her chances as she scored a frustrating 8.3 on her last shot, leaving the Gold medal to her Chinese opponents.

Guo climbed atop of the podium with a final score of 198.8 points. Tien collected Silver with 197.8 points.

“I have learned how to manage the stress of such situations through the years,” said Guo.

“As I am preparing for my third Olympics, I am trying to improve these psychological aspects of the game. You need good technical and physical preparation to compete, but a strong mind can make the difference in the fight for the medals.”

Guo is indeed preparing for Rio 2016, where she is looking for her third title back-to-back, after winning the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

“I never look at my previous medals,” she said. And that applies also to today’s Gold. “Every time I win a medal, I save it a home, and never look back at it again. Every competition is a new start.”

Guo’s teammate Zhang Mengxue of the People’s Republic of China, 25, joined her on the podium, as she took home today’s Bronze medal with 177.8 points, collecting another positive result here in Bangkok after she made it to the final match at the 25m Pistol Women final, two days ago (when she placed 6th).

Following them, two Thai shooters – Klaisuban Pim On, 23, and Prucksakorn Tanyaporn, 26 – battled for a spot on the podium throughout the match. Receiving a huge support by the local spectators, they eventually closed the round in 4th and 5th places, with 156.4 and 136.1 points, respectively.

Today, the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, will continue with one more medal match: the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men final is scheduled at 2.15 (UTC+7) and will be broadcasted live on http://www.issf-sports.org

ISSF World Cup: Grimmel (DEN) and Wu (BRA) climb Bangkok’s podium…

Felipe Almeida Wu of Brazil and Torben Grimmel of Denmark won today’s 10m Air Pistol and 50m Rifle Prone finals, at the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. They have different backgrounds and motivations, but both set their sights on Rio 2016, after winning the first match of the season.

It was the last shot that decided today’s 10m Air Pistol Men final, as the winner of the 2015 Pan American Games Felipe Almeida Wu of Brazil (23) and the 2014 Continental American Championship winner, Will Brown of USA (24), tied at the penultimate shot with 191.7 points.

The two shooters fought since the beginning of the final, stately climbing up toward the podium placements. When only two shots were left to fire, Brown held a narrow 0.3-point advantage on his Brazilian opponent, but as he shot a 10.2 to Wu’s 10.5, the two finished tied right before the last shot of the match.

The pressure of the final kicked-in: Brown scored a disappointing 9.7, while Almeida Wu zeroed and fired a winning 10.2, which allowed him to move in the lead and to secure the brightest medal with a total score of 201.9 points. Brown was left in second, with a score of 201.4 points.

“It’s amazing, I am extremely happy, hard work paid-off today.” Said the Brazilian athlete. “This is a very important year for Brazil and for Brazilian sports,” Wu added. “We have all eyes on us. Our national media started following us more and more in the lead-up to the Olympics. And this is crucial, especially for Shooting sport. I am happy to contribute to spread knowledge about our disciplines through my victories.”

“Winning the first international match of the year helps to build up confidence. I will continue to work, to be ready next August.”

Hoang Xuan Vinh, 41, from Vietnam, took Bronze with 180.1 points after fighting neck and neck against Wu and Brown. Kazakhstan’s Rashid Yunusmetov, ranked 22nd in the world in this event, was also going for a medal, but a 9.3 at his 16th shot cost him the podium. The 36-year old athlete placed in 4th with 159.3 points, just 0.7 points far from the medalists. Today’s turned into a disappointing final also for the winner of yesterday’s 50m Pistol Men event, India’s Jitu Rai (28). The Indian shooter started off the match with some strong scores, but then marked 8.8 and 9.9 on his 13th and 14th shots, dropping down in the placements and eventually taking the 5th place with 139.0 points.

At the following 50m Rifle Prone Men final, it was the 2000 Olympic Silver medalist Torben Grimmel of Denmark who finished in the spotlights.

Grimmel secured the brightest medal at the end of a thrilling duel against Australia’s 2008 Olympic Bronze medalist and reigning world champion Warren Potent, 53. With two excellent last shots of 10.3 and 10.7 points, the Danish athlete sealed the victory with a final score of 209.1 points, leaving Potent in second with 208.3 points. The 40-year old shooter came back atop of an ISSF world cup podium 8 years after his last victory in this event.

“It feels great to be back,” Grimmel said. “I had a work accident, and I had to pass through back surgery twice, in 2010 and then again 2013. But luckily I have been able to recover well. That was odd-defying.”

“My aim for 2016 is to go to the Olympics and to do well there. And I am confident.” He added. “We are all training and competing for an Olympic medal. I would say there are 10 to 15 people out there who have what it takes to win the Games. It’s unpredictable.”

“I am trying to stick to my routines as much as possible.” Continued the Danish shooter. “At the Games, the targets, the people and the scores are more and less the same: the main issue is to cope with the pressure and peak at the right moment. I have already been through it, 16 years ago.”

Following Grimmel and Potent, it was Hungary’s 19-year old Istvan Peni who secured the Bronze medal with 187.3 points, only two days after finishing in third at the 10m Air Rifle Men event. “Wow! This is amazing, it’s a dream!” He said. “I’d prepared really well for the 10m Air Rifle event, in the lead up to this world cup stage. And that worked really well. I can’t believe that I made it to the podium also today. Shooting next to these Olympic medalists is definitely inspiring.”

Even more impressing, Peni beat the world cup titleholder and #1 in the world Michael Mcphail of USA (34), to finish upon the podium. Halfway through the final, the top-4 athletes were divided by one point only, and Peni managed to keep Mcphail 0.4 points behind him, winning the medal and leaving the American shooter in 4th with a score of 166.2 points.

The ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, continues tomorrow. The 10m Air Pistol and the 50m Rifle 3 Position Women finals will be broadcasted live on the ISSF website (www.issf-sports.org) at 11:00 AM and 13:15 (UTC+7), respectively.

There will be a change in the 2016 ISSF World Cup Series calendar announced last year, as the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup planned to be held in Granada (ESP) has been moved to Baku (AZE), where a combined Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun World Cup Stage will take place. Both the 2016 ISSF World Cup Finals have been assigned to Italy, as they will be held in Bologna and Rome, respectively for Rifle/Pistol and Shotgun events. Following the success of the 2014 and 2015 editions, 2016 Junior Cups will be held in Suhl (GER) and Gabala (AZE), both including Rifle/Pistol and Shotgun events.

In 2017, the ISSF World Cup Series program will be limited to five total stages, which will be held in New Delhi (IND), as a combined Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun World Cup, in Munich (GER) and Gabala (AZE) for Rifle and Pistol events, and in Nicosia (CYP) and Acapulco (MEX) for Shotgun events. The 2017 season will also witness the launch of the ISSF Junior World Championship, with its first edition to be held in Suhl (GER) and including Rifle/Pistol events only. Shotgun junior shooters will have two world-class events to compete among themselves in dedicated age categories: the ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Moscow (RUS), where separate junior finals will be held, and an ISSF Shotgun Junior Cup in Porpetto (ITA).

In 2018, a combined ISSF World Cup stage in Changwon (KOR) will serve as a test event of the 52nd ISSF World Championship in all events to be held there from August 31st through September 14th. Another combined World Cup stage will be organized in Guadalajara (MEX), while Shotgun stages will be held in Mosta (MLT) and Tucson (USA). Rifle/Pistol World Cups, then, are scheduled to take place in Munich (GER) and Fort Benning (USA). Two ISSF Junior Cup stages will also be included in the 2018 calendar, in Suhl (GER) and Sydney (AUS), both conducted in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events.
