ISAF World Sailing Rankings – 27 July 2015

The ISAF World Sailing Rankings for 27 July 2015 have been released.

Finn

It’s as you were in the Finn with the top three of Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic at World #1 sitting above the British pair of Edward Wright at World #2, and Giles Scott World #3.

A big mover in the class is Germany’s Andreas Christiansen who moves into the top 100 at World #74, with a ninth place finish in the 100-point Kieler Woche Regatta.

Winner of the Kieler Woche, Estonia’s Deniss Karpak is a non-mover at World #14.

49er FX

Martine Grael & Kahena Kunze (BRA) remain in the World #1 position helped by a second place finish in the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

New Zealand’s Alexandra Maloney & Molly Meech move up a place to second with a sixth place finish in the European Championships.

Jena Mai Hansen & Katja Salskov-iversen (DEN) also move up a place into third with a second place finish in the European Championships, with compatriots Ida Marie Bad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen pushed down from World #2 to World #4 with the movement of the duos.

49er

John Pink & Stuart Bithell (GBR) retain World #1 ranking sitting ahead of New Zealand’s Peter Turling & Blair Tuke.

Despite only registering five ranking events, Australia’s Nathan Outteridge & Iain Jensen move up a place to World #3, taking the place of Nico Delle-Karth & Nikolaus Resch who move down to World #4.

With a seventh place finish in Kieler Woche and a top 25 finish in the European Championships, Italy’s Uberto Crivelli Visconti & Gianmarco Togni make the move from World #61 to break into the top 50 at World #46.

Men’s 470

Third place in the European Championships help Australia’s Mathew Belcher & William Ryan retain their World #1 ranking ahead of an unchanged top six.

The movers within the 470 are Sweden’s Johan Molund & Sebastian Östling who move up from World #31 to World #21, mainly thanks to a 12th place finish at the European Championships.

Women’s 470

A first place finish at the European Championships cements Jo Aleh & Polly Powrie (NZL) World #1 ranking with no movement within the top ten.

Sitting behind the pair from New Zealand are Great Britain’s Hannah Mills & Saskia Clark and Japan’s Ai Kondo Yoshida & Miho Yoshioka in World #2 and World #3 respectively.

Laser

The World Championships have impacted the Laser rankings with winner Nick Thompson (GBR) moving up to World #3 and Pavlos Kontides up to World #4 with a ninth place finish.

Still holding on to World #1 and World #2 are the Australian’s Tom Burton and Matthew Wearn. Burton holds on to top ranking with a third place finish in the World Championships, while Wearn is just a single point ahead of Great Britain’s Thompson thanks to his fifth place at the Worlds.

With a 15th place finish in the Worlds and a second at the Pan American Games, Brazil’s Robert Scheidt climbs up to World #12 from World #28.

Laser Radial

There is no change in the Laser Radial until you hit the World #15 ranking where Croatia’s Tina Mihelic moves up from World #19 due to a second place in Kieler Woche.

Winner of Kieler Woche, USA’s Erika Reineke moves from World #58 to World #41.

Still top of the rankings is World #1 Evi Van Acker (BEL).

ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, RSX – Shaw (c) Ocean Images

Women’s RS:X

Winning the European Championships has helped Great Britain’s Bryony Shaw retain the World #1 spot ahead of Lilian De Geus (NED) who stays in World #2.

The European Championships also helped Hadar Heller (ISR), Saskia Sills (GBR) and Megumi Komine (JPN) move up into the top 50. Heller now sits at World #48, her best ever ranking.

Men’s RS:X

Taking a first place in the Pan American Games saw Brazil’s Ricardo Santos climb from World #7 to World #2, pushing Russia’s Max Oberemko down into World #3.

Santos and Oberemko sit behind World #1 Byron Kokkalanis (GRE).

Following each other up the rankings are French pair Louis Giard and Pierre Le Coq who move from World #18 and World #19 respectively, to World #9 and World #10.

Giard remains above his compatriot thanks to a stronger finish in the European Championships.

Hiroki Goto and Wakako Tabata, JPN, Mixed Multihull (Nacra 17) at day one of the ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth & Portland.
Returning to the London 2012 Olympic waters, the ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland is taking place between 8-14 June with the racing conducted over five days between 10-14 June at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Medal race day on Sunday 14 June will decide the overall event winners in each class.

Nacra17

The top five remains the same with Australia’s Jason Waterhouse & Lisa Darmanin World #1, helped by a second place finish in the World Championships.

A sixth place finish in the Worlds keep Italy’s Vittorio Bissaro & Silvia Sicouri at World #2, with the World Championship winners Billy Beeson & Marie Riou rounding out the top three.

With Rio 2016 qualification fast approaching for the Asian hopefuls, Hiroki Goto & Wakako Tabata (JPN) and Justin Liu & Denise Lim (SIN) move back up in to the top 50. Also breaking in to the top 50 with a personal best ranking are Olivia Mackay & Micah Wilkinson (NZL) at World #44 and John Casey & Kristen Lane (USA) at World #48.

Men’s and Women’s Formula Kite

The World Championships reflected the top three for the Women as World #1 Elena Kalinina (RUS) came first, World #2 Stephanie Bridge (GBR) came second and World #3 Anastasia Akopova came third.

For the Men, the top three remain the same with Florian Gruber (GER) at World #1, level on points with World #2 Alejandro Climent Hernandez (ESP).

Outside the top 25 there are some big movers with Axel Mazella (FRA) up from World #51 to World #27, Connor Bainbridge (GBR) up from World #68 to World #29 and Dor Zarka (ISR) up from World #86 to World #38 to name a few.

February 2015 ISAF World Sailing Rankings Released

The ISAF World Sailing Rankings for 2 February 2015 have been released.

• Top 30 in each Olympic event receive ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères invitations;
• ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, Presented by Sunbrella, a 200-point regatta, ensures significant changes across the ten Olympic events;
• New World #1 in the Women’s 470. No change at World #1 across nine other fleets.

Laser

By his own standards, Tom Burton (AUS) was off the pace at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, Presented by Sunbrella, finishing down in 18th. However with a number of medal winning performances already behind him, he holds on to World #1.

Philipp Buhl (GER) claimed the World Cup Miami title but only after his nearest rival Nick Thompson (GBR) suffered an equipment malfunction that allowed the German to pass in the Medal Race. Buhl’s victory gave him the full 200-points and he leapfrogs up from World #30 to World #7.

Thompson meanwhile moves up to World #2 as Robert Scheidt (BRA) slips to World #3.

Miami was a vital regatta for all of the competitors with valuable ranking points up for grabs. A top performance would prove significant and that was certainly the case for the 14th placed Jesper Stalheim (SWE) and the eighth placed Rutger van Schaardenburg (NED).

Stalheim picked up 175 points whilst van Schaardenburg received 186. They move back into the top 30 at World #20 and #21 respectively, securing an invitation to ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères.

Alex Mills Barton (GBR) and Kristian Ruth (NOR) also sneak into the top 30 at World #29 and World #30.

Several 50-point regattas across the world also see chops and changes in the middle of the rankings.

Laser Radial

There is no change to the leading Laser Radial trio with the Miami podium finishers all solidifying their top position. Bronze medallist Marit Bouwmeester (NED) sits at World #1, silver medallist Evi Van Acker (BEL) is at World #2 and Anne Marie Rindom (DEN), Miami gold medallist, completes the top three.

There are plenty of movers and shakers below them with the 200-point ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami and several 50-point regattas ensuring so. With the top 30 receiving invitations to ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères, the fight for position in Miami was fierce.

Alison Young (GBR) moves back into the top 30 after a busy period of racing. Wins at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne and Sail Sydney combined with a ninth at the ISAF Worlds and a fourth at the Sailing World Cup Final had left her at World #38. A hard fought fifth in Miami pushes her back into the top places and she sits at World #18.

At the cut off point for Hyères invitations, Joyce Floridia (ITA) and Fernanda Decnop (BRA) both move into the top 30, counting the key points they secured at World Cup Miami. For Paloma Schmidt (PER), a 45th in Miami was not enough to solidify her position in the top 30 and she misses out by four points.

Finn

Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) retained World #1 in the Finn following a silver medal performance at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami. The Croatian has three consecutive second place finishes to his name, ensuring a sublime haul of points.

Giles Scott (GBR) holds a perfect ranking score of 800 points after he extended his winning streak in Miami. However, the Briton only counts five regattas to his ranking whilst those around him count six. Scott is positioned at World #7.

Zsombor Berecz (HUN) moves back into the top 30 after he won gold at the 50-point Palamos Christmas Race at the back end of 2014. The current World #30 takes the final Hyères invitation. Palamos silver medallist Milan Vujasinovic (CRO) also moves into the top 30. He is at World #20.

49erFX

Having dominated the 49erFX over the last 12 months, Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA) comfortably sit atop of the rankings on 988 points.

North American gold and a World Cup Miami bronze ensured their position was solidified and they are 69 points clear of World #2 Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen (DEN).

Alex Maloney and Molly Meech (NZL) finished second at the Midwinters before sealing World Cup Miami gold with a day to spare. With the full 200 World Cup points coming their way they move up to World #3.

Interestingly, since the 49erFX’s first ranking release on 12 December 2012, there have only been two World #1s, the Brazilians and Kiwis. But as crews continue to master the equipment, they’ll look to spring some surprises on the road to Rio.

Tess Lloyd and Caitlin Elks (AUS) took the honours at the Oceanic Championship and continue to march up the rankings. They move up four places to World #14.

49er

ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami bronze was enough for Jonas Warrer and Anders Thomsen (DEN) to retain World #1 in the 49er. Joel Turner, sailing with Iain Jensen, picked up silver in Miami and as a result Turner moves from World #40 to World #18 and will receive a Hyères invitation for himself and usual crew Lewis Brake.

Turner came in for Nathan Outteridge who missed out on Miami competition for personal reasons. Jensen will revert back to sailing with his usual helm. Outteridge and Jensen sit at World #24 but only count four regattas to their point’s total.

Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch (AUT) put together a steady string of Miami results that ultimately handed them the title. They did not win a race across the series of 13 but 11 top ten performances gave them the edge. They remain at World #3.

A 23rd in Miami was enough for Federico and Arturo Alonso (ESP) to re-enter the top 30 at World #27. Jacapo Plazzi and Umberto Molineris (ITA) move to World #30 after a 31st in Miami. Both crews will receive invitations to ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères.

Men’s 470

Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (AUS) retain World #1 in the Men’s 470 after two medal winning performances in Miami, USA. They claimed the North American title in advance of ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami but were made to settle for silver at the main event. They sit 25 points clear of World #2 Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis (GRE).

Luke Patience and Elliot Willis (GBR) finished behind the Australians at the 100-point North American regatta but had their revenge by securing a seven point victory at World Cup Miami. As a result they shift up to World #3.

Japan’s Tetsuya Matsunago and Yugo Yoshida are the big movers this month. The Japanese pair picked up bronze at the 470 North Americans before sealing a tenth at World Cup Miami. As a result, they have moved up to a personal best of World #5 from World #19.

Palamos Christmas Race silver medallists Guillaume Pirouelle and Valentin Sipan (FRA) sneak into World #30, thus securing an invitation to World Cup Hyères. At World #31 Antonio and Joao Rosa miss out on an automatic invitation by 24 points. Their chance to qualify will come at Princess Sofia Trophy regatta in Palma, Mallorca, Spain.

Women’s 470

New Zealand’s Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie move back to World #1 in the Women’s 470 having dominated ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, Presented by Sunbrella. Taking the full 200-points the Kiwis are 99 points clear of Fernanda Oliveira and Ana Luiza Barbachan (BRA).

Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (GBR) finished 27 points off the Kiwis in Miami, however with a silver medal coming their way they move up to World #7 from World #21.

Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar (AUT) took the gold at the 100-point North American Championship in advance of their ninth at the World Cup. They sit at World #11.

France’s Maelenn Lemaitre and Aloise Retornaz took 50-points away from the Palamos Christmas Race regatta at the end of 2014 and remain at World #24.

There are no shock entries into the top 30 after many of the leading teams used Miami to solidify their spot top 30 status.

Men’s RS:X

It was an up and down week in the Men’s RS:X, with consistency a rarity on Miami’s challenging track. Nonetheless, the form racers came to the forefront.

Dorian van Rijsselberge (NED) claimed gold which promotes him up to World #13 from World #29. Silver for Thomas Goyard (FRA) moves him up to World #3 a personal best and bronze medallist Byron Kokkalanis (GRE) retains World #1.

Sebastian Fleischer (DEN), Joan Cardona Bocarando (ESP) and Ivan Pastor (ESP) all move into the top 30 after solid Miami performances and subsequently qualify for ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères.

The 100-point RS:X African Championship title went the way of Algeria’s Hamza Bouras. The Algerian moves up to World #105, a personal best.

Women’s RS:X

Flavia Tartaglini (ITA) holds on to World #1 in the Women’s RS:X in spite of a disappointing final day in Miami. The Italian was on the course side in the Medal Race and dropped out of the honours. Nonetheless her fourth place was enough for her to retain her position at the top of the rankings.

The Netherlands’ Lilian de Geus and Russia’s Olga Maslivets were major benefactors of Tartaglini’s downfall. De Geus took silver which pushes her up to World #4, a personal best, and Maslivets’ bronze sees her climb up to World #25 from World #38 to secure a Hyères invitation.

Bryony Shaw (GBR) claimed a comprehensive Miami victory, solidifying her spot at World #2.

Nacra 17

Vittorio Bissaro and Silvia Sicouri (ITA) successfully defended their ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami title with a day to spare. By taking maximum points at the 200-point regatta they hold on to World #1.

Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves (GBR) took silver in Miami and remain at World #6. Billy Besson and Marie Riou (FRA) sneaked onto the Miami podium and sit at World #2.

Mandy Mulder and Coen de Koning (NED) finished fourth, moving them back into the top 30

The ISAF World Sailing Rankings for 20 October 2014 have been released.

• Men’s RS:X racer Byron Kokkalanis (GRE) climbs to World #1 following ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao victory;
• Australia’s Tom Burton (AUS) retains World #1 in the Laser after Qingdao bronze;
• Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp (ESP) continue their rise after first senior title at ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao;
• Ups and downs in the Laser Radial after World Cup Qingdao.

Laser

Tom Burton (AUS) retained World #1 in the Laser after a tremendous fight back at ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao where he picked up bronze. The Australia had a tough opening day, finishing down the pack in both races but as the week progressed he worked his way up and sealed bronze on the final day to keep hold of World #1.

Qingdao gold medallist Tonci Stipanovic (CRO) is just 21 points behind Burton at World #3 with Robert Scheidt (BRA) sandwiched in the middle, eight points off the World #1.

Stipanovic (CRO) was in fine form in Qingdao to seal gold for the second consecutive year ahead of Pavlos Kontides (CYP) who was made to settle for silver again. Kontides sits at World #4, ten points off the Croatian.

Wannes Van Laer (BEL) is one of the big movers from Qingdao after his fourth place finish. The Belgian progresses up to World #20 from World #31 and also received an ISAF Sailing World Cup Final invitation from his fourth place in Qingdao.

There were four other graded Laser regattas in the current period, all worth 50 points.

Juan Igancio Maegli (GUA) won gold at Semana de Buenos Aires in Argentina and moves up one spot to World #33. KSSS Olympic Class Regatta victor Kaarle Tapper (FIN) moves up to World #49. Laser Europa Cup Portugal winner Martis Pajarskas (LTU) is at World #78 and Sail Qatar winner Haakon Haakonsen (NOR) enters the rankings at World #361.

Laser Radial

The final day at ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao saw a shootout between Dongshuang Zhang (CHN), Tatiana Drozdovskaya (BLR), Sara Winther (NZL) and Tina Mihelic (CRO) for the podium spots.

Zhang took the honours at the 2013 edition and made sure of victory once again, finishing ahead of her rivals. Counting four regattas to her point’s total Zhang sits at World #12.

Mihelic (CRO) came up from fourth to second on the final day with a strong showing. The Croatian progresses up to World #5 from World #9. Bronze medallist Winther is the biggest Qingdao mover, coming up from World #27 to World #18. She also booked herself an invitation to the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final this November.

Drozdovskaya finished last in the Qingdao Medal Race and dropped out of the podium places. She remains at World #3. 2014 Laser Radial World Champion Marit Bouwmeester (NED) stays at World #1 with Evi Van Acker (BEL) World #2.

There were three 50-point Laser Radial regattas in the current period. Josefin Olsson (SWE) took gold at the KSSS Olympic Class Regatta and is positioned at World #22. Carolina Joao (POR) came out on top at the Laser Europa Cup Portugal and as a result moves up from World #183 to World #139, a personal best. Semana de Buenos Aires gold went to Lucia Falasca (ARG) and she moves up 12 spots to World #47.

Laser and Laser Radial Medal Race Highlights – 2014 SWC Qingdao

It was an epic final day battle in the Laser between Tonci Stipanovic (CRO) and Pavlos Kontides (CYP) at ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao with the Croatian taking the spoils. In the Laser Radial, Dongshuang Zhang (CHN) defended her title ahead of a close knit bunch of racers.

Men’s RS:X

Byron Kokkalanis (GRE) jumps up to World #1 in the Men’s RS:X following victory at ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao. The Greek sailor was dominant in Qingdao, sealing victory with a day to spare to take the full 200-points on offer. He reaped the rewards and climbs from World #8 to World #1 for the first time in his career.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao silver and bronze medallists Aichen Wang (CHN) and Max Oberemko (RUS) took a good haul of points and progress into top spots in the Men’s RS:X Rankings. Wang sits at World #8 whilst Oberemko is at World #3.

Women’s RS:X

With just ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao as the only ranked regatta in the current period, Flavia Tartaglini (ITA) retains World #1 with Byrony Shaw (GBR) at World #2 and Laura Linares (ITA) at World #3.

Qingdao gold medallist Jiali Sun (CHN) took maximum points at the 200-point ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta in the Chinese city and advances up the rankings. The 23-year-old moves from World #23 to a personal best of World #11.

Olga Maslivets (RUS) finished second in Qingdao and as a result sits at World #37. Bronze medallist Hongmei Shi (CHN) climbs to World #53 but only counts one result in her point’s total.

Men’s 470

Men’s 470 rising youngsters Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp (ESP) continue to impress in the fleet and took their first ISAF Sailing World Cup title in Qingdao, China. The 2013 and 2014 junior world champions have had a great year and by taking their first significant senior title in Qingdao they advance up the World Rankings.

Picking up 200-points from Qingdao the duo climb from World #17 to a personal best of World #10 and head into the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi, UAE brimming full of confidence.

Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis (GRE) finished behind the Spaniards in Qingdao. With a good points haul they move up one spot to World #2. Onan Barreiros and Juan Curbelo Cabrera (ESP) completed the Qingdao podium and also advance up the rankings. They go from World #14 to World #8.

Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (AUS) remain at World #1, counting six excellent results to their point’s total of 985.

Women’s 470

China’s Mengxi Wei and Yani Xu re-enter the rankings at World #47 having dominated the fleet at ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao. The Chinese pair were strong in Qingdao’s big breeze and big waves and rampant in the light tricky breeze, amassing consistent top results that gave them a convincing win and the full 200 ranking points.

Xiaomei Xu and Ping Zhang (CHN) finished behind their compatriots in Qingdao and as a result pick up a good haul of points that sees them rise to World #13 from World #29.

Shasha Chen and Haiyan Gao (CHN) completed the Qingdao podium and sit firmly at World #8, the leading Chinese duo in the rankings.

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie (NZL) drop a regatta from their points total and slip from World #1 to World #4. Camille Lecointre and Helene Defrance (FRA) advance to World #1.

Nacra 17

There were no Nacra 17 regattas in the current period which ensures there is no change in the top three. Vittorio Bissaro and Silvia Sicouri (ITA) top the billing and are followed by Darren Bundock and Nina Curtis (AUS) and Thomas Zajac and Tanja Frank (AUT).

2013 and 2014 Nacra 17 World Champions Billy Besson and Marie Riou (FRA) are at World #9 but only count five regattas to their point’s total.

Finn

With the ISAF World Sailing Rankings on a 12-month rolling cycle, Giles Scott (GBR) has dropped from World #1 to World #3 as he now counts five regattas to his point’s total. As a result Bjorn Allansson (SWE) moves up to World #1 and Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) moves to World #2 with both sailors counting point’s from six regattas.

The 50-point International Finn Regatta in Malescine, Italy was the single regatta held in the current ranking period. Giorgio Poggi (ITA) claimed the title and sits at World #16.

49er

The KSSS Olympic Class Regatta was the single 49er event in the ranking period. Top honours and the full 50-points available went to Sweden’s Carl Sylvan and Otto Hamel. The Swedes continue to sit steady at World #13.

World #1 stays the same with Jonas Warrer and Anders Thomsen (DEN) holding steady. They continue to be trailed by John Pink and Stuart Bithell (GBR) and Julien D’ortoli and Noe Delpech (FRA).

49erFX

Just like the 49er, the KSSS Olympic Class Regatta was the only 49erFX regatta in this period. Lisa Ericson and Hanna Klinga (SWE) came out on top to pick up 50-points from the regatta. As a result they move up four places to World #14, a personal best for the Swedish team.

There is no change at the top of the rankings with ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year nominees Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA) sitting pretty at World #1. Ida Marie Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen (DEN) follow.

2015 ISAF SAILING WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION SYSTEM PUBLISHED

The qualification system for the 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup (SWC) has been published.

The 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup will consist of five rounds for all ten Olympic events and where possible, Formula Kite Racing.

ISAF WORLD SAILING

With reduced quotas, a qualification process based around the ISAF World Sailing Rankings and ISAF Sailing World Cup Qualification Regattas will be used to determine the entrants for each round, ensuring the world’s best sailors will be within the World Cup fleets.

Event winners from each SWC Round will qualify to the 2015 SWC Final whilst the best placed ‘home continent’ sailor in each round will also qualify. The top three finishers at the 2015 Class World Championships (if already held) will qualify to the 2015 SWC Final. The remaining SWC Final places will be awarded via the ISAF World Sailing Rankings.

ISAF Sailing World Cup
The ISAF Sailing World Cup is a world-class annual series for Olympic sailing. It is open to the sailing events chosen for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition.

The ISAF Sailing World Cup brings together the major regattas on the Olympic sailing circuit. Over 2,000 of the world’s leading sailors representing 75 nations competed in the sixth season of the World Cup, 2013-2014.

ISAF World Sailing Rankings – September 2014

The ISAF World Sailing Rankings for 22 September 2014 have been released.

Finn

2014 World Champion Giles Scott (GBR) rockets to the top of the Finn rankings and finally counts scores from the maximum six regattas. Previously ranked at World #14 he adds the maximum 200 points to his total and tallies a perfect line up of first place finishes to keep Sweden’s Bjorn Allansson at bay at World #2. Silver medallist from the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) moves up one place to World #3.

Finn North American Champion Caleb Paine (USA) posted a career best Finn World Championship result, coming in seventh in Santander and moves up three places to World #8, the highest ranked sailor who is counting points from just five regattas.

The youngest sailor in the Medal Race, Junior World Champion Anders Pedersen (NOR) sailed the regatta of his life, qualifying for his first Medal Race and securing a spot for Norway at the 2016 Olympic Games. Pedersen finished eighth overall and sees his ranking position improve by 12 places to World #16.

49erFX

It was a dramatic 49erFX Medal Race on the Duna course with just two teams fighting it out for the title – European champions Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen (DEN) and World #1 duo Martine Sofiatti Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA). The Danish pair got off to the best start but couldn’t hold off the Brazilians and it was Grael and Kunze who claimed the gold medals and consolidate their position at the top of the ranking. Nielsen and Olsen remain at Wold #2 whilst bronze medallists Giulia Conti and Francesa Clapcich (ITA) move up seven places to Wold #3.

Just outside the medals in fourth place were Dutch pair Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz who climb one place up to World #4. It was an up and down regatta for defending champions Alex Maloney and Molly Meech (NZL) who just missed out on the Medal Race cut finishing eleventh but now counting six regatta results they move up six places to World #5.

At their first World Championship together in the 49erFX, Sweden’s Lisa Ericsson and Hanna Klinga finished in ninth place and see their ranking position improve by four places to World #18.

49er

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) have a perfect ranking score in the 49er following victory at the Santander 2014 ISAF Worlds that that also extended their unbeaten run to 11 consecutive regattas (four within New Zealand and seven international events). The pair count five regattas to their ranking score and with those around them counting six, they currently sit at World #5.

Jonas Warrer and Anders Thomsen (DEN) picked up silver in Santander and therefore retain World #1 with six solid regatta scores under their belts. Warrer, Beijing 2008 Olympic gold medallist, won gold at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami and silver at World Cup Mallorca.

Like Burling and Tuke, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) count five regattas to their point’s total. They sit at World #7 following a third place in Santander.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Final

Men’s 470

After a dominant display at the ISAF Sailing World Championships, Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (AUS) retain World #1 in the Men’s 470. For the pairing it was their second world championship title together but for Belcher, it was his fifth in a row, having won three with Malcolm Page in the build-up to London 2012.

Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic (CRO) and Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis (GRE) took silver and bronze in Santander and as a result sit at World #2 and #3 respectively.

Spain’s Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp won the Men’s 470 Medal Race, finishing seventh overall in Santander and as a result move up to a personal best ranking of World #17.

Women’s 470

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie (NZL) lost out on Women’s 470 gold at the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships but with a second place overall, their silver lining is moving back up to the World #1 position.

In a do or die final Women’s 470 race it was a dual between the Kiwis and Austria’s Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar for gold. The Austrians took the lead at the first mark and never looked back, claiming a well-deserved first world championship title. As a result of winning gold the Austrians move up to World #5.

Bronze medallists Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (GBR) count five regattas to their points total and as a result sit at World #13.

Laser

Brazil’s Robert Scheidt has advanced to World #1 in the Laser after a consistent 12 months of racing that features three podium finishes and a fifth at the Santander 2014 ISAF Worlds. Tom Burton (AUS) follows Scheidt by just five points at World #2 after he took silver in Santander.

Nicholas Heiner (NED) was a class above the rest in Laser Medal Race at Santander 2014 taking victory by over minute. With results behind him in his favour the Dutchman was crowned 2014 world champion, sparking wild celebrations. Heiner sits at World #11 counting the full 200 points from Santander, a fourth and tenth at ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca and Hyeres, a 16th at the 2013 Laser Worlds and two silver medals from 100-point EUROSAF regattas.

Laser Radial

Marit Bouwmeester (NED) retains World #1 in the Laser Radial after taking her second world championship title at the Santander 2014 ISAF Worlds. Bouwmeester’s last world title came at the 2011 edition of the ISAF Worlds as she once again proved she can mix it up on the grandest of stages.

Bouwmeester is ten points ahead of World #2 Evi Van Acker (BEL) who picked up bronze in Santander. Silver medallist Josefin Olsson (SWE) only counts five regattas in her points total and is currently ranked at World #14.

With plenty of ups and downs within the 120-boat fleet in Santander there are plenty of changes afoot across the Laser Radial rankings.

Nacra 17

Billy Besson and Marie Riou (FRA) won their second Nacra 17 world title after a dominant display at the Santander 2014 ISAF Worlds. The pair won the inaugural title in 2013 and retained it comprehensively with a day to spare in Santander.

They currently sit at World #5 counting the maximum 200-points from the Santander 2014 ISAF Worlds and ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca. They received 197 points from their second place at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres but have only sailed at three 200-point regattas, compared to those around them who have sailed at four.

Vittorio Bissaro and Silvia Sicouri (ITA) have finished in the top four at four 200-point regattas, winning two. They retain World #1 and are followed by Darren Bundock and Nina Curtis (AUS) and Thomas Zajac and Tanja Frank (AUT).

Women’s RS:X

Charline Picon (FRA) was the class act of the women’s RS:X fleet at the ISAF Worlds, only once finishing a race outside the top four. Picon had secured the gold medal with a day to spare but finished off her regatta in true champion’s style with a Medal Race win. Counting results from just five events, the 2014 World Champion moves up six places to World #4.

Holding on to the World #1 position is Flavia Tartaglini (ITA) ahead of Bryony Shaw (GBR) and Laura Linares (ITA) at World #2 and 3 respectively.

To the delight of the home crowd, Marina Alabau (ESP) took the silver medal. She moves up six places to World #29 with just three ranked regattas from the past 12 months to add to her points. The bronze medal went to Mayan Davidovich (ISR) who improves her ranking position by seven places to move up to World #14.

Men’s RS:X

Like Picon in the Women’s, Julien Bontemps (FRA) was on fire in the Men’s RS:X at the ISAF Worlds. He finished 21 points ahead of Przemyslaw Miarczynski (POL) to become a two time Men’s RS:X World Champion. Bontemps only counts five regattas out of a possible six to his points total and with 200 points coming his way from Santander he moves up to World #11 from World #18.

Ricardo Santos (BRA) retains World #1 whilst Poland’s Piotr Myszka, who finished fourth in Santander, moves up to World #2. Men’s RS:X bronze medallist Thomas Goyard (FRA) advances from World #8 to World #3, a personal best.
