Glo-Caf Awards: Hayatou arrives, meets Fashola

President of the Confederation of African Football, Alhaji Issa Hayatou on Wednesday arrived in Nigeria’s commercial and economic
capital, Lagos, as the Centre of Excellence geared up for Thursday’s showpiece Glo-Caf African Football Awards.

Accompanied by his wife, Alhaji Hayatou arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 1.30pm and was received by
President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari and Globacom’s Executive Director (Special Projects), Mr. Mike Jibutoh.

There were also Members of NFF Executive Committee, Chief Emeka Inyama, Alhaji Muazu Suleyman and Alhaji Yusuf Fresh, Nigeria’s former Member of the FIFA Executive Committee, Dr. Amos Adamu, CAF Executive Committee member Anjorin Moucharafou, former NFF Vice President, Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam, Olabode Opeseitan (Globacom’s Director of Public
Relations), Ademola Olajire (NFF’s Assistant Director of Communications) and Nasiru Jibril (Personal Assistant to NFF
President).

The train immediately moved to the Lagos State Government House, Marina, where Hayatou was received by the Executive Governor, Mr.Babatunde Raji Fashola at a short but impressive ceremony.

Hayatou hailed Fashola for his commitment to the real growth of Nigeria football through several youth developmental programmes, and hugely commended the Aminu Maigari-led NFF for Nigeria’s sterling performances in international competitions in year 2013.

“As we speak, Nigeria is the real giant of Africa, having won the Africa Cup of Nations and qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals, won
the FIFA U-17 World Cup and also qualified to play the African Nations Championship. These are remarkable feats.”

Responding, Governor Fashola applauded the several feats recorded Hayatou since the former 400m champion of Cameroon became Africa’s football supremo 26 years ago.

“Apart from countless other achievements, you were able to get FIFA to make the World Cup truly a World Cup, by bringing it to Africa. You also got FIFA to bring the Club World Cup to Africa, played for the first time on our continent last month. What is left, and what I charge you and your Executive Committee to work hard at, is the technical development of African Leagues, and how to bring the economy of football to Africa.”

Eagles Arrive Cape Town In High Spirit…Envoy Charges Team…Nigerian Troupe Welcomes Team

The Super Eagles arrived South Africa on Wednesday morning to begin quest for honours in its maiden appearance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2014, specially designed for players who ply their trade across leagues in Africa.

The team led by Assistant Coach, Dan ‘the Bull’ Amokachi, who is holding forte for Stephen Keshi, who has stayed back in Nigeria for this weekend’s Glo-CAF Awards before joining the team, left the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos on Tuesday night at about 10:30pm. After five and half hours flight with a South Africa Airways plane, the team arrived Johannesburg at 4:30 Nigerian time, which is 5:30 in South Africa.

The team was received by a team of Nigerian Embassy officials led by Ambassador Sunday S Yusuf, who expressed delight at the safe arrival and ensured that the team had a smooth passage through immigration procedure. The envoy also charged the team to ensure that they win the trophy at the first try. “Nigerians are now used to winning, especially here in South Africa and I’m sure you will not let the nation down”, he said. Amokachi assured that the team will do its best at the tourney, even as Keshi is being expected on time before the Eagles opening game against Mali.

After a little wait at the OR Thambo International Airport, the team connected another SAA flight to Cape Town where it will play its preliminary matches. On arrival the team was received by about 30 cheering and drumming Nigerians under the aegis ‘Nigerian Union in Western Cape’. The group was led by Kalu Obi.

From there the team whose Team Administrator, Dayo Enebi Achor, was already on ground was taken effortlessly to its abode at Garden Court De Waal, a quiet suburb of the city. The team has since settled down and will have its first training session tonight at 8:30pm local time, which is 7:30 Nigerian time.

Super Eagles boss, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi and his Ethiopian counterpart, Sewnet Bishaw believe that it’s about time Nigeria returns to the summit of African football with one of their players winning the coveted African Player of the Year Award. The awards are scheduled for Lagos, Nigeria next week.

Bishaw who spoke first also expressed his love for the Abuja National Stadium and wished it was in his native Ethiopia. “Nigeria was obviously the best football nation in Africa last year and I won’t be surprised if a player from the country emerges the player of the year. They deserve to get the award. I also wish this beautiful stadium is somewhere in Addis Ababa”, he said smiling.

Keshi on his part said it has been a very long time since a Nigerian won the African Footballer of the Year Crown and he is rooting for John Mikel Obi to emerge the best among the pack. “It will boost the team and Mikel and all Nigerians because it has been a long time since we last won the award and I know we deserve to win this year”, he said.

On whether he will be happy to be named the African Coach of the Year, Keshi said he will play the wait and see game but added that it will be a great honour to be so named. Keshi who is primed for the award and may not depart with the national team to South Africa on Tuesday evening is favoured to bag the prestigious Coach of the Year Award.

Top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation and Globacom Communications have been perfecting strategies and methods for a
highly successful Glo-Caf African Football Awards, which will take place at the Eko Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos on
Thursday, 9th January, 2014.

The Glo-Caf Awards traditionally rewards the best men and women performers in several sectors of the game in the continent in the
outgone year.

At the weekend, NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari held a meeting with a delegation from the telecommunication giants, where several issues, especially the reception, transportation, accommodation and security of the CAF delegation as well as the role of Nigeria Football Federation were highlighted.

Noting that the NFF is one of the most respected football Federations in the African continent and that the Aminu Maigari administration is a brand to associate with, Globacom’s Director of Public Relations, Mr. Olabode Opeseitan declared that “our objective is to deliver a world class event interspersed with unique brand of African entertainment, and we need the support of NFF to achieve this.”

Former Nigeria captain Sunday Oliseh will anchor the event alongside renown South African broadcaster Carol Tshabalala.

NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, pledged the support of the Federation to ensure that the showpiece is a huge success, “to the
glory of our country.”

At the meeting inside the NFF Secretariat were NFF President Aminu Maigari, Chairman of Technical Committee, Barrister Chris Green, General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu, Director of Competitions, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi and Assistant Director (Media), Ademola Olajire. From Globacom were Olabode Opeseitan, Mr. Vincent Oparaeke (Head, Marketing Communications, North West) and Mr. Afolabi Otufowora (Head of Events).

For the first time in decades, and underlining the tremendous success that year 2013 was for Nigeria football, several Nigerian players and teams are in line for honours on the night.

Nigeria’s National Team, winner of the 29th Africa Cup of Nations and first African team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, is nominated for National Team of the Year, while the U-17 Team, record fourth winners of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates, is nominated for Youth National Team of the Year.

Midfield lynchpin John Mikel Obi is nominated alongside Ivorians Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba for Player of the Year, with Coach Stephen Keshi in the race for Coach of the Year alongside compatriot Manu Garba of the U-17 side, and Kelechi Iheanacho, Most Valuable Player of the FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013, in the race for Most Promising Talent.

Attacking midfielder Sunday Mba, who scored the only goal of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Final, is nominated for African Player of the Year (based in Africa) while the Nigeria Football Supporters Club will pick up the Fair Play Award.
