The great Sir Garfield Sobers received a special presentation ahead of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) between Barbados Tridents and Trinbago Knight Riders at the Kensington Oval on Saturday morning.
One of the game’s greatest players, whose influence and legacy extends across the Caribbean and beyond, Sir Garry will celebrate his 80th birthday later this month and to mark this milestone, Hero CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe was joined by dignitaries from Barbados Tridents – including Sid Mallya and T. Venkat Vardhan – as well as Tridents captain Kieron Pollard and William Griffith (CEO, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.).
Mr. Mallya also presented Sir Garry with a signed Tridents jersey and speaking at the event, CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe said: “Sir Garry is an icon of Barbados, the West Indies and the game of cricket and we are delighted to pay tribute to him and his enormous contribution across the sport ahead of his 80th birthday celebrations on 28th July. Unfortunately the birthday events clash with our games in Lauderhill, Florida, so we thought it important to acknowledge his fantastic contribution to the game here in the Kensington Oval.
“One of Barbados’ favourite sons, Sir Garry has been a wonderful ambassador for the game for many years and as well as a close personal friend, he has been a great supporter of the Hero CPL since day one. We are honoured to host him, his partner Jackie, son Daniel and extended family and friends to mark his birthday. I know that I speak on behalf of all fans of the CPL in extending our very best wishes at this time of celebration.”
In a Test career spanning 20 years between 1954-74, Sir Garry was arguably the greatest player of his generation and scored 8,032 runs (including a then record Test score of 365 not out) in 93 Tests and taking 235 wickets. In addition to the West Indies, he also represented Barbados, Nottinghamshire and South Australia and scored 28,314 first-class runs and took 1,043 first-class wickets overall.

The 2016 HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Player Draft was unveiled at a gala ceremony in Barbados on Thursday, with some of the leading West Indian and international talent set to descend on the Caribbean this summer.
Delegates including West Indies coach Phil Simmons joined representatives from each of the six franchises including owners and coaches as well commercial partners and media to the impressive Concorde Experience.
Speaking in the aftermath of the CPL Player Draft, CEO Damien O’Donohoe commented: “It has been a busy period over the last few weeks for each of the franchise owners. But with the conclusion of the Player Draft today, we can now look forward to staging many mouth-watering contests later this summer in the Caribbean, and for the first time in the USA, with some of the best international talent in world cricket on display.
“There is a strong selection of outstanding international talent, supplemented by the introduction of ‘marquee’ players for each franchise which allies to our biggest roster of local Caribbean players to date, and that remains a cornerstone of the CPL’s strategy to develop West Indies cricket.
“Last year was our most successful campaign to date, where we welcomed over 302,000 fans through the gates, which represented an increase of 44% from the previous season. This year we are going to work even harder to build on this strong platform and engage our growing international audience. It is without doubt our most exciting roster of talent, with some of the biggest names signed up for what is the biggest party in sport.
“We look forward to working with each of the stakeholders, not least the West Indies Cricket Board who have been hugely important supporters of the CPL, to deliver our best season yet.”
Proteas batsman Faf du Plessis will line up for the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots alongside West Indies duo Samuel Badree and batsman Lendl Simmons, Australian international Brad Hodge, retained players Evin Lewis and Tabraiz Shamsi as well as Canada’s Nikhil Dutta (ICC Americas) for the coming season.
Australia’s two-time ICC Cricket World Cup winner Shane Watson will join his former international team-mate Michael Hussey as well as West Indies World T20 captain Darren Sammy at the Zouks. They will team up alongside the likes of Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher as well as South African paceman Morne Morkel and batsman David Miller.
The highly-decorated former ICC Cricketer of the Year Kumar Sangakkara, meanwhile, will return to the Jamaica Tallawahs after helping them seal the inaugural trophy in 2013 and he will join the electrifying Chris Gayle, Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and local favourites Andre Russell and Chadwick Walton.
The recently re-named Trinbago Knight Riders will welcome back the number one ICC WT20 international bowler Sunil Narine to their ranks from Guyana and he will be joined by Proteas batsman Hashim Amla and Dwayne Bravo, Kevon Cooper as well as former Black Caps captain and ‘marquee’ player Brendon McCullum who will making his first appearance this summer at the biggest party in sport. Left arm spinner Sulieman Benn and Pakistan wicket-keeper Umar Akmal will also join the Trinidad and Tobago based franchise.
Talented duo Christopher Barnwell and Versammy Permaul will be aiming to provide the local backbone for New Zealand star top order batsman Martin Guptill for the Guyana Amazon Warriors as they bid to go one step further and seal the coveted CPL title which has eluded them on two occasions in 2013 and 2014. They will be joined by the hugely talented Dwayne Smith and Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir who has moved from the Patriots.
Finally, Barbados Tridents will be spear-headed by the arrival of star Proteas batsman AB de Villiers who will join fellow South Africans Robin Petersen and David Wiese alongside the influential Kieron Pollard, Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik, Ravi Rampaul and Steven Taylor (ICC Americas) who was also retained by the franchise.

Cricket followers in the USA will have the chance to watch some of the greatest players in the world this summer in the HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved the staging of Twenty20 (T20) fixtures in the forthcoming 2016 season.
Six fixtures are planned to take place in July, with full fixture and ticket information for the coming season to be announced in due course.
Commenting on the announcement, CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe said: “Today is a landmark day for the CPL and a massive boost for cricket followers across the USA ahead of the CPL Player Draft in Barbados on Thursday.
“This project has been in discussion for many months and we are grateful to the ICC for supporting this move which enables us to step up our planning and open up opportunities for the cricket-hungry American public.
“I would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Dave Cameron and our partners in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in this process. The participation of the ICC Americas team in the recent Nagico Super 50 has proven to be a hugely important step forward and we are committed to providing more opportunities for players and that experience will certainly count for those six ICC Americas players who will be selected in this year’s Draft.
“The CPL has already had a positive impact in the Caribbean and we are excited about bringing top quality cricket to the USA. We are committed to developing the next generation of cricketers and we believe that by exposing the best talent from across the Caribbean and the Americas region in the CPL, we can inspire a new generation of cricketers in the USA.”
ICC Head of Global Development, Tim Anderson, said: “In partnership with the US cricket community the ICC has recently established a strategic framework for the future development of cricket in the USA.
“The staging of high level international cricket is a key part of this strategy, therefore we see the approval of several CPL matches in the USA as a positive step forward for all cricket followers in the US.
“We are also delighted that a number of development activities will take place around the matches, ensuring that the expertise and experience of the CPL players, coaches and officials contributes to the exciting growth of the game in the USA.”
