American Boxing Confederation’s Top Athletes Gear Up For Crucial Olympic Qualification Tournament in Buenos Aires

The American Olympic Qualification Event get underway in ten days time, with a record number of 241 boxers from 34 countries registered for the tournament in Buenos Aires from 11-19 March in Predio Ferial la Rural de Palermo venue. In all, 25 men’s and 5 women’s quota places for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be confirmed at the end of 11 days of boxing in the Argentina’s capital.

“It is moments like these for our boxers that bring their years of dedication and training into focus. The Olympic dream is a unique driving force for athletes and with 60 places at Rio 2016 already taken up, there is no doubt that the race for the remaining spots between so many brilliant athletes from this famous boxing continent will be thrilling”, said AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.

Top US women’s boxer Claressa Shields has won all of her major competitions since the London 2012 Olympic Games, and the reigning Olympic, AIBA Women’s World, American Confederation and Pan-American Champion now has her sights firmly set on Rio 2016, along with Canada’s Pan-American Games winners Mandy Bujold and Caroline Veyre.

With six boxers already confirmed for Rio, Cuba’s men’s team will only have four representatives in Buenos Aires, all of them stars of the Domadores WSB franchise: reigning Olympic champions Roniel Iglesias and Robeisy Ramirez, Erislandy Savon and Leinier Pero.

There is great expectation on the shoulders of rising US stars Shakur Stevenson and Antonio Vargas, while the Argentine fans will want to get behind their medal hopes Yamil Peralta, Alberto Palmetta and APB star Alberto Melian. WSB stars Yoel Finol of Venezuela and Carlos Andres Mina from Ecuador will also be among the favourites to qualify, while Costa Rica pins its hopes on flyweight David Alejandro Jimenez, the first boxer from the country ever to win a medal at the AIBA World Championships.

“The strength of the field in Buenos Aires speaks volumes about the quality of boxing on our continent as we go into this important Olympic year. There are potential gold medal winners in every squad, but it is a long journey to becoming Olympic champion with a lot of bouts to win, starting here in ten days’ time”, said American Confederation President Osvaldo Rafael Bisbal.

Argentina Condors dig deep to earn a sensational 3-2 win over Venezuela Caciques in Buenos Aires

Argentina Condors scored their first WSB win of Season VI as they edged past Venezuela Caciques in spectacular fashion in Buenos Aires on Friday night. With the match tied at 2-2 going in to the final bout, Kevin Espindola kept his cool to deliver a match-winning performance, delighting the home fans.

It was the Condors’ Christian Roda who set the tone from the opening contest, stepping up against Caciques’ AMBC American Confederation Champion Yoel Finol. The Venezuelan looked to be in control in the early exchanges, but after knocking down the southpaw mid-way through the third round, Roda’s confidence visibly grew, and he powered through to take the first bout and give the hosts an unlikely advantage.

The lead was cancelled out when Brian Ivan Nunez defeated the hosts’ 20-year-old lightweight Luis Angel Cabrera. Having lost to Cabrera in Season V, Nunez was in no mood for a repeat showing, and his attacking style brought Caciques back on level terms.

WSB RECCURENT BANNER, Argentina Condors dig deep to earn a sensational 3-2 win over Venezuela Caciques in Buenos Aires

The most hotly anticipated contest of the evening came in the third bout, with the experienced WSB welterweights Alberto Ignacio Palmetta and Gabriel Maestre both looking to give their sides the advantage. Southpaw Palmetta started well against Venezuela’s Pan-American Games champion, and as Maestre came back strongly the Argentinian reacted brilliantly, raising the tempo and delivering a vital win for the Condors.

It was a timely introduction for Caciques’ in-form light heavyweight Albert Ramon Ramirez, who won five out of his six bouts during last season’s campaign and never looked in trouble against Argentina’s Sergio Lebensztajn, levelling the tie at 2-2. Step forward the hosts’ Kevin Espindola who, at thirteen years younger than his opponent Edgar Munoz, boxed like a man with nothing to lose. Controlling the tempo from the outset, the Condors’ super heavyweight delivered a boxing master class to the delight of the home fans, landing enough strong punches to bring a precious win for the Argentine team in the capital.

Caciques de Venezuela Looking For Season’s Second Away Win Against Argentina Condors

In Group C’s all South American WSB clash on Friday night, Caciques de Venezuela travel to Buenos Aires looking to build on their opening round victory against Rafako Hussars Poland last weekend with a win over Argentina Condors.

The Condors will need to produce their best form if they are to secure a result from their first match of Season VI against a confident Venezuelan side, and the honour of opening up the evening’s proceedings will fall to flyweight Christian ‘La Joyita’ Roda as he faces Caciques’ 19 year-old American Confederation champion Yoel Finol.

The hosts’ lightweight boxer Brian Ivan Nunez follows Roda into the ring, and will be eager to exact revenge on Venezuela’s 20-year-old Luis Angel Cabrera, who defeated the Argentine in Season V.

The most highly anticipated bout of the match then comes between the two experienced WSB welterweight boxers Alberto Ignacio Palmetta and Gabriel Maestre. The Condors’ Palmetta, who has been training with coach Jorge Ochenduszka in the KO Gym, defeated Maestre in the semi-final of last year’s American Confederation Boxing Championships on the Venezuelan’s home turf, but Pan-American Games champion Maestre will be determined to return the favour this time around.

Sergio Lebenstajn has a tough bout against Venezuelan Albert Ramon Ramirez in the heavyweight match up, before Condors’ Kevin Nicolas Espindola takes on the highly experienced Edgar Ramon Munoz, part of the Venezuelan national side since 2002, in the last bout of the night.

Eaglets Tackle Argentina At AFA Centre

Nigeria’s U-17 side, Golden Eaglets, will on Tuesday have their work cut out when they tackle their Argentine counterparts in a friendly match at the Argentina Football Association (AFA) Training Centre in Ezeiza, Buenos Aires.

The match, which is part of the team’s preparation towards the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015, will kick off at 3:30 pm local time (7:30pm Nigerian time).

In a related development, Golden Eaglets’ assistant coach, Kabiru Baleria, has yet again heaped plaudits on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over its choice of Buenos Aires Football (BAF) as the training camp for the national U-17 team ahead of U-17 World Cup finals.

The Emmanuel Amuneke -led side have spent few days at the idyllic BAF complex owned by former Argentine international, Matias Almeyda and Baleria said the quiet environment has added value to the team’s preparation, even as players battle for competition.

“It is nice we are here for our preparation towards the World Cup in Chile,” said Baleria, a former Nigerian International ” The boys are happy and you can see the excitement on their faces since we arrived here in Buenos Aires.”

The team has been training twice daily since arriving on Friday and the technical crew is delighted at the keen competition in camp.

Coach Amuneke praised the intensity of the training and demanded further commitment from the players, adding that much was being expected from the team in Chile.

“I’m happy with the intensity of the training but we can get better,” Amuneke said on Monday.” We have to keep working hard in the coming days because we have few days before our first match at the World Cup.”

NFF’s Assistant Director (Technical) Siji Lagunju, who is with the team in Buenos Aires, said he was impressed with the quality of training as well as the response of the players. He is also of the view that the players would in due time be well attuned to the demands of the technical crew.

Eaglets Land In Buenos Aires, Begin Training

World champions, Golden Eaglets of Nigeria on Friday arrived their pre-World Cup training camp in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A contingent of 25 players and 10 officials including NFF’s Assistant Director (Technical) Siji Lagunju, had earlier departed from Abuja on Thursday. They later left Dubai (the city where Golden Eaglets’ class of 2013 had their training camp before winning a historic fourth title for Nigeria in the same country) in the early hours of Friday for Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) en route to Buenos Aires.

On ground in Buenos Aires to receive the team were officials of Nigeria Embassy led by Mr. Elekwachi Ndubuisi and Mrs. Felicia Ezeorah as well as NFF FIFA Match Agent, Jairo Pachon, who informed that all arrangements had been put in place for the team’s smooth preparation ahead of the World Cup to be held between October 17 and November 8 in Chile.

Pachon told thenff.com that the Golden Eaglets would engage Argentina’s U-17 team in a friendly match on October 6 and would on October 11 feature against the U-20 team of either Racing FC or Boca Juniors before departing for Santiago.

Golden Eaglets’ Head Coach Emmanuel Amuneke had on Thursday before departure announced a strong squad of 25 players for the trip, including team captain Kelechi Nwakali along with nine others who were in the squad that secured the team’s ticket for the World Cup at the last Africa U-17 Nations Cup in Niger.

FULL LIST: Kelechi Nwakali; Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ebere Osinachi, Kingsley Michael, Orji Okonkwo, John Lazarus, Halilu Lukman, Udoh Akpan, Benjamin Amos, Taiwo Alimi, Chinedu Madueke, Ibe Tobechukwu, Ejike Ikwu, Tochukwu Okoli, Udochukwu Anumudu, Chiaha Chisom, Funsho Bamgboye, Yunusa Abdullahi, Agor Chukwudi, David Enogela, Michael Edidiong, Samuel Opeh, Joel Osikel, Gavi Thompson.

Meanwhile, the Eaglets have begun training at the Buenos Aires Futbol ground. BAF, as its simply known is a facility privately owned by former Argentine international, Matias Almeyda and it’s tucked away at San Roque in Tigre on the outskirts of the capital city of Argentina.

According to Eaglets’ Head Coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, the facility in BAF is similar to what was obtainable at the Papendal Sports Centre in Holland that was used by the Super Eagles in the 1990s during the era of Dutch coach, Clemens Westerhof. Though not as gigantic as Papendal in Arnhem, BAF has about seven training pitches with state of the art gymnasium, swimming pool and other adjunct facilities good for camping.

“This facility is good since it is out of town and would allow for maximum concentration throughout our camping here ahead of the World Cup,” Amuneke admitted.

The former Nigerian international, after offering prayers to God at saturday’s morning training, further told the players that they should think about nothing other than football and the World Cup. The Eaglets are expected to train twice daily with slight variation when there is a friendly match.

Meanwhile, the weather condition in Buenos Aires is chilly with temperature oscillating between 8 and 15 degree centigrade – same weather in Chile with most South American countries nearing the winter season.

Youth Engagement And Innovation At The Heart Of Buenos Aires 2018 Preparations

Wrapping up the second visit of the International Olympic Committee’s Coordination Commission to the Argentinian city of Buenos Aires, host of the 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2018, the IOC delegation concluded the two-day meeting today enthused by extensive plans to engage young people and innovate at every stage in the preparations.

Following the IOC Executive Board’s approval last month of the sports programme, which sees all team sports adopting a youth-focused discipline and the addition of new appealing events such as BMX freestyle, beach handball, kiteboarding and cross country running, the local organisers (BAYOGOC) have ensured that all elements of their Games Foundation Plan have the necessary youth appeal.

Further work has been done to develop the “cluster concept”, which will see four dedicated areas of the city integrating the sports competitions with sport initiations, sport showcasing, music, culture and Olympic education for local youth and families to enjoy a full experience in addition to the elite youth competitions within the same location.

A detailed outline of the Learn & Share programme was presented – it will target not only the attending athletes, but also schools nationwide through Olympic educational programmes supported by a strong digital offering and numerous city sports and cultural events featuring high-profile guests.

With the support of all levels of government and the Argentinian National Olympic Committee (AOC), the Organising Committee has, in this year alone, reached over 850,000 spectators and close to 100,000 young participants in 163 sporting, cultural and educational activities across the city. The IOC Coordination Commission was particularly impressed with the effects of this extensive engagement activity; with three years to go to the Games, a recent city survey has shown public support rocketing to 82.3 per cent in favour of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

To support the 40-strong organising team, a Youth Commission is now functioning as an advisory board to ensure the project is catering for young tastes and trends, while key emphasis has been placed on innovating in the areas of social and digital media in order to reach the 2.6 million young people in the city and wider national and global youth audiences.

Legacy plans, put at the heart of the project from the outset to ensure the event is not only a 12-day event, but a catalyst for change for urban and social development, have been further developed with the AOC to ensure youth sports participation is boosted as part of a nationwide programme to target and identify young talent and bring sport to young people.

IOC Coordination Commission Chair Frank Fredericks

IOC Coordination Commission Chair Frank Fredericks said: “We are bowled over by the energy, passion and creativity of this team. They want to make the Youth Olympic Games 100 per cent unique and attractive to young people, and, with over three years to go, they have already captured the imagination of the people of Buenos Aires.” He continued: “We are impressed with the extent to which BAYOGOC has embraced Agenda 2020 and is already implementing 13 of the recommendations in its preparations. We look forward to our next visit when the team will be into the planning phase and we start to see this vision become the reality.”

On Friday, the Coordination Commission visited the construction site of the Youth Olympic Village in the south part of the city, the area of Buenos Aires targeted by the local government as in need of urban development and where 65 per cent of the nearly 4.000 athletes will be able to walk to their competition venues. Young architects have been appointed in the design process and construction has recently commenced.

Strong relationships have been developed early in the process with the TOP Partners, whose regional offices in Buenos Aires have allowed for support of several local events, such as Olympic Day and sports initiation projects, while cooperation is already underway with all 28 International Federations to further develop the venue master plan and Learn & Share projects.

WBSC Welcomes Short-Listing Of Baseball, Softball For Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) President Riccardo Fraccari today welcomed the news that men’s baseball and women’s softball have been included on the shortlist of additional sports (events) being evaluated by Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games organisers for potential inclusion at the 2020 Games.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation was among 26 international sport federations to have submitted bids to Tokyo 2020 organisers earlier this month.

“This is a great day for our sport,” said President Fraccari, “today baseball and softball — and the millions of athletes and fans who call it their sport — reached first base. And on behalf of WBSC and the entire baseball and softball world, I would like to thank Tokyo 2020 and its evaluation panel for this opportunity to move into phase II. Being considered for the Olympic Games is a tremendous honour for baseball and softball, and the possibility of our athletes playing for their countries on the Olympic stage is a shared point of hope and excitement within our sport.”

wsbc. World Baseball Softball Confederation

As Tokyo 2020’s evaluation continues, the WBSC will be hoping to underline that adding baseball and softball to the 2020 Games in Japan — where baseball and softball are embedded in the culture, have existing facilities and are popular across both genders — can provide Tokyo 2020 organisers with another tool to shine the spotlight on the 2020 Games and on the host nation itself, optimising fan-, youth- and overall engagement nationally and internationally.

In August, presentations to Tokyo 2020 organisers will be made by the shortlisted international federations. Tokyo 2020 will have until 30 September 2015 to propose any new events to the International Olympic Committee. The final decision on the composition of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic sports programme will be taken by the 129th IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016.

WBSC’s previous Olympic bid, which proposed men’s baseball and women’s softball for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games, earned the second-highest amount of votes at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires in 2013, finishing behind wrestling.

Happy World Table Tennis Day!

From Buenos Aires to Haiti, the world is celebrating World Table Tennis Day in its own unique way.

Today, 6 April 2015, marks the first ever World Table Tennis day which rejoices the sport of table tennis, a true sport for all.

Over 100 events in more than 50 countries across the world are being held today, with one common theme – Table Tennis for Everyone, Everywhere!

“The response has been amazing! Being the first year, we were expecting between 20 and 40 events but there are currently more than 100 in around 50 countries!” stated ITTF Director – Development Program, Leandro OLVECH.

The showcase event will be staged at the “Obelisco”, the most iconic monument in Argentina being located at the 9 de Julio Avenue, and considered the widest street in the world.

The street will be closed off, with a sea of tables being assembled for thousands of people to come and play table tennis, and celebrate World Table Tennis Day!

Major cities such as Amman, Berlin, Bombay, London, Manchester, New York, Paris, Tehran and Zurich are also hosting events, as is Suzhou, the city that will host the forthcoming QOROS 2015 World Table Tennis Championships.

Notably, New York will see training for teachers in order to coach their students; in Bombay, entrepreneurs will be involved in a special event, whilst in Manchester, a gathering to integrate immigrant families from the suburbs will be staged.

Likewise in Paris, Ping Sans Frontieres, an organisation that collects equipment to donate to African countries, with organise a coach education day.

Not to be left out, San Salvador, the capital of the small Central American country of El Salvador, will continue the principles of the Nittaku Dream Building Project in an attempt to involve young people in sport as opposed to being drawn into the gang culture.

Meanwhile, in Brighton on the south coast of England, an attempt will be madeto break the current global record of 139 players competing in a table tennis rally and thus gain a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

“The idea behind this day is to gather table tennis enthusiasts, attract people who usually don’t play table tennis, promote the love for our sport and ideally engage new players to the practice in the long term” said ITTF President Thomas WEIKERT.

So pick up your rackets, find a table, and play table tennis to celebrate World Table Tennis Day!

Brazil’s Hugo Calderano & Gui Lin Crowned At 2015 ITTF-Latin America Championships

Major contributors to Brazil’s victory in the Men’s & Women’s Team events on 17 March, Hugo CALDERANO (BRA) and GUI Lin (BRA) claimed the Men’s & Women’s Single title to make it to the top of the podium once again at the 2015 ITTF-Latin America Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 21 March 2015.

In the Men’s Singles finals match, Youth Olympic bronze medalist Hugo CALDERANO survived a close call to overcome his colleague Cazuo MATSUMOTO 4-3 (14-16, 11-1, 11-6, 11-4, 10-12, 12-14, 11-6) to defend his title.

On the eventful victory, the 18-year-old shared “I was leading three-one but we both know each other very well, so he knew how to put me in trouble; he became more aggressive from the fifth game onwards, it was vital I kept calm. It’s very important to trust in your own game, that kept me going in the match.”

“Both of us practise in Europe, we have improved a great deal, as have others. The challenge we have against players from Europe and Asia is making us better. I really like to play here in Argentina, it was here I played my first ever international tournament and I always enjoy it here; now it’s time to celebrate and think of China and then Toronto, those are my next goals.”

In the Women’s Singles finals, 21-year-old GUI Lin (BRA) prevailed to take the crown against Mexico’s Yadira SILVA in a tension packed 7-games finals (8-11, 8-11, 15-13, 13-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8).

After her victory, the Brazilian reflected “A key factor was to stay mentally strong as I was trailing several times. I know I can play well, I’ve done it in recent days, I just need to hold my focus through these moments and keep playing according to my tactics. It was the main reason for the win and the title”

“This is a very motivating accomplishment for me!” added Gui Lin. “Being the new Latin American champion is a great joy and it will help me in the big tournaments to come.”

As with the case of the Women’s Singles final match, it was success for GUI in the Women’s Doubles category. Together with her experienced compatriot Ligia SILVA, GUI had a close encounter with the Puerto Rican sister, Adriana DIAZ & Melanie DIAZ, to win 3-2 (9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9), and take home the fifth crown for Brazil.

It was Mexico & Chile who prevailed in the Mixed Doubles & Men’s Doubles gold medal matches respectively, preventing an all Brazilian sweep of all seven medals on offer.

The Mexican duo of Marcos MADRID & Yadira SILVA had a taste of sweet revenge at the Mixed Doubles finals against the Puerto Rican pair of Brian AFANADOR & Adriana DIAZ, who defeated them at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games last November. This time in Buenos Aires, the Mexicans emerged victorious to beat the second seeded Puerto Ricans 3-1 (6-11,11-5, 11-7, 11-8).

Victory in the Mixed Doubles, MADRID & his partner Salvador URIBE (MEX) were unsuccessful in the Men’s Doubles final hurdle against Chile’s Manuel MOYA & Alejandro RODRIGUEZ. The Chilean pair upset the Mexicans 3-1 (11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7).

With the conclusion of the 2015 ITTF-Latin America Championships, all attention now turn to the qualification events for the Pan American Games that begins 22 March 2015 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
