1,000 Borno pupils get books, pens from 1 GAME

More than 1,000 pupils from Gamboru Alajiri Primary School in Maiduguri have received free books and pens from the 1 GAME Campaign as part of moves to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds in school.

Project Development Coordinator, 1 GAME Campaign, Agafi Kunduli who supervised the distribution of the materials to the pupils said the donation which formed part of the 1 GAME: 1 Book, 1 Pen initiative was also aimed at encouraging vulnerable children to enroll into school.

He said: “Our objective as an organization is not just to support effective policies that are helping to put kids in school, but also to provide these kids particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds with the basic tools they need while in school.

“We believe that this move will not only assist these children in achieving better learning, but will also encourage other vulnerable children to embrace primary education, knowing that they wouldn’t need to buy a book and a pen if they accept to enroll.”

Gamboru Community, where the Gamboru Alajiri Primary School is located, has witnessed series of attacks in the past by Islamists militants fighting against western education in Borno and most of Nigeria’s North-Eastern states. The community also has a very high number of Almajiri children.

The 1 GAME Campaign is looking to improve literacy level in Borno, a state with over 1.8 million out-of-school children by encouraging parents to send their children to western schools while it provides basic writing materials for those children coming from very poor backgrounds.

The organization has often blamed the violence in Borno and other North-Eastern States state to ignorance and poverty. It believes that if the current generation of children embraces primary education, the issue would be addressed in future.
