Tunis 2014 ACCM: Stakeholders Applaud Mark Mentors

Despite finishing ninth over-all in the just concluded 29th Africa Champions Cup for Men held in Tunis, Tunisia, Nigeria’s sole representative at the competition Mark Mentors basketball club have receive praises from various basketball stakeholders across Nigeria.

The Peter Ahmedu tutored Mentors who debuted at the continent biggest men club championship failed to made it to the knock-out stages after starting it group-B campaign on a promising note with a 68-65 points win over Abidjan Basket Club of Cote d’Ivoire but subsequently faltered in the group remaining games.

The Nigerian side also defeated Malabo Kings basketball club of Equatorial Guinea to finish ninth after getting a full dosage of what it takes to play among the biggest teams across Africa.

Mark Mentors chairman, Igoche Mark was singled out by stakeholders for remaining steadfast and believing in the ability of the team that came into limelight two seasons ago.

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Tijjani Umar while speaking on a live radio programme on Monday said the team did well at the continental championship.

The NBBF boss, however, believed that Mentors would have finish among the top-four if it had the needed experience and exposure but says the team must have learnt one or two lessions from the Tunisia Champions Cup won by Angola Clube Recreativo E Desportivo Do Libolo.

Umar called on all stakeholders in the game to play it’s part so that Nigeria teams (clubs and national teams) can benefit more from activities that would propel the game to a higher level in Nigeria.

He concluded that 2015 will be a more challenging year for Nigeria as there are more continental championships that Nigeria would enter at national and club levels.

Former head coach of the senior national men’s team, Ayodele Bakare urged people to understand that Mark mentors made its debut at the African stage and finishing ninth was not a bad result.

“I understand people’s expectation from Mentors but sincerely, it is not easy on the international stage, especially for first-timers as Mark Mentors were. Let us appreciate what they have been able to do, commend and encourage them. I am sure they have learnt a lot and will do much better as time goes on. And thanks to them, Nigeria’s flag was hoisted at that tournament and the country was represented, Bakare opined.

Vice-president of the NBBF, Muktar Khaleh on his part said Nigerians need to appreciate what the mentors have achieved; we must not forget it’s their first time out there. The team must have learnt a lot at the championship and for sure they will register a better performance the next time they get there. Kodus guys.

Ayo Bakare Steps Down as NBBF Technical Director

At a media parley in Lagos yesterday , former Head coach of the Nigerian national team and technical director the Nigeria Basketball Federation Mr Ayodele Bakare annouced his resignation from his position as technical director of the Nigerian Basketball federation.

In his statement to the press, Mr Bakare said “After due consideration of my personal commitments at this time I have decided to withdraw from my role as the technical director of the federation .This is not a sudden decision but is made after a lot of consideration, discussion and consultation between the federation and l “.

He further went onto allay fears of dissatisfaction or disagreement with the federation, saying “I remain irrevocably committed to the progress and success of this current NBBF administration and will continue to support and serve Nigerian basketball as sincerely as I have in the past 25 years or more years.

Regardless of whether I am in an active or reduced role I pledge my support for the federation and urge you (the Press) to continue to support NBBF for the uplifting of Nigerian Basketball”. He added.

Mr Bakare stepped down after just 4 months in the office as the head of the technical committee of the Nigerian Basketball federation. Regarded as Nigeria’s best basketball coach, Bakare has been instrumental in Nigeria’s rise as a basketball nation, leading the men’s national team to their first ever qualification for the Olympics two years ago in London, and appearances in the FIBA World Championship (1998) and the 2008 Olympics.

He also led D’Tigers to several FIBA-Africa men’s tournaments, and finished in second place on three occasions (1997, 1999 and 2003).

ISL, Avi-Cenna Win Big at The 15th Edition of the AKOFA Private Secondary Schools Basketball Championship

The 15th Edition of the AKOFA Private secondary schools basketball championship came to a close in grand style at the Avi-Ceena International School Lagos on Saturday 8th March, 2014. With the International School University of Lagos going home with the championship trophy after triumphing over host Avi-Ceena International School by 39-34 points in the Boys Final. The female Final saw Vivian Fowler Memorial College narrowly losing to Avi-Cenna International school 17-21 after a fierce encounter.

The Avi-Cenna girls who took unto the court for their final game just before the Boys final match and where carried by Most Valuable Player of the tournament Ruth Omotayo who is on full scholarship due to her sporting talent. In the girls 3rd place match International school University of Lagos defeated Queens College Yaba, Lagos 10-9 in overtime after a 7 all stalemate in regulation time. While Sound Hope academy won the bronze medal match for the boys 31-24 against White Sand school Lekki.

Present at the event is the newly appointed technical director of the Nigerian Basketball federation Mr Ayodele Bakare accompanied by his wife and kids as well as Nigerian Basketball Federation Board member and Chairman of the Management committee of the DStv premier basketball league Mr Agboola Pineirho, former Nigerian National Women’s team head coach Scott Nnaji, Cordinator of the Youth Alive Community League for Under 18 and Under 14 Mr Gbade Olatona and the Proprietor of Avi-Cenna International School Mr Fouah amongst other dignitaries that featured parents, teachers and students.

Speaking with our correspondent at the event, the founder of the AKOFA Ivy Basketball league Mr John Faniran said “I’m proud of the standard of the competition especially in the female cadre”. He also promised that the winners will be going to Europe for a summer tournament in Belgium and Holland come August. He further went on to thank the sponsors Honeywell Noodles and La- Tesern Pharmaceuticals as well as the Lagos State Basketball Association and the Nigerian Basketball Federation and the schools for letting their students participate. He encouraged more schools to participate and more corporate organizations who want to sponsor the competition.

Speaking about the Champions ISL where he’s two son ( Bolaji and Bolu) played actively for, Mr Faniran said “the key to their success is that they have a passionate coach and their school loves basketball with a passion”.
This is ISL’s 3rd basketball winner’s medal in the less than a year having previously won the Deregos Basketball Championship and the National Nestle Milo secondary schools championship in Lagos.

The new N.B.B.F Technical director Ayo Bakare commended the organisers of the AKOFA Ivy Basketball league. He said “These are
the kind of developmental programmes we are looking for, about 3 or 4 of these talents can possibly represent Nigeria at the Under 16’s”. He also went on to encourage more grassroot tournaments. “We – the federation are willing to help as many of these grassroot competitions across the nation as we can”. We are starting on a clean slate and we want to groom players who can represent Nigeria for 10 to 15 years down the line.

The male most valuable player of the competiton Nwachukwu Chinoso from International School University of Lagos who captivated fans with two monster dunks in the game, showed the character of what true sportsmanship is all about. The very modest 6 feet 5 inches 15 year old said “I really don’t think I deserve the MVP award because everyone on my team actually contributed to our success”. “I’m thankful I’m going home with this but Europe; America is the next point of call.It is time to show the world my talent”. he added
