Ahly and Esperance fight for the club Volleyball World Championship ticket

2014 Men’s African Club championship

The African representative at the 2014 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship will be determined on Saturday when 10 time champions Ahly (EGY) battle it out against 3 time champions Esperance (TUN) in the 2014 Men’s African Club Championship final at the Olympic Hall in Sousse, Tunisia.

Winners of the final will clinch the title and book a ticket to the FIVB prestigious event in Belo Horizonte, Brazil from May 5 to 10. The bronze medal match will take place between two Tunisian teams Sfax and Etoile du Sahel.

Ahly who own now the record of crowns to their name are now seeking their eleventh title after 1980, 1983, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2011 with a relatively new line up having only 3 players kept from the squad that won the last title since 3 years.

Ahly led their preliminary pool D with 4 straight victories over Ahly Tripoli (LIB), Prisond (CMR), FAP (CMR) and Beau Vallon (SEY) dropping only a set against the Libyan side.

They then continued their victory rhythm after beating Algeria’s Bourj Bouarrirj in the quarterfinal before they passed the biggest obstacle in the semifinal after beating defending champions Sfax after an epic tiebreaker to claim a final spot.

On the other had Esperance (TUN) who won the Arab Club Championship last month are now seeking their fourth trophy after 1994, 1998 and 2000 to make the trio of the Tunisian, Arab and African championships.

Their line up 7 current national team players beside the Russian Alexander Sorokltove and now they want to regain the cup they didn’t gain since 14 years.

Esperance led the preliminary Pool C with 5 straight victories over Ahly Benighazi (LIB), GSU (KEN), Port (CMR), Nemostars (UGA) and Mugher Cement (ETH) losing only a set in their way to the quarterfinal against the Libyan side. They took over Setif (ALG) in the quarters before they eliminated the organizers Etoile du Sahel in the semifinal.

Giants Ahly and 3 Tunisian teams through to semifinal of African club championship

2014 Men’s African Club championship- Quarterfinals

Record holders Ahly (EGY) beside three Tunisian clubs Etoile du Sahel, Esperance and Sfax ontinued their way to the semifinal of the 2014 Men’s African Club Championship after their respective victories over Borj Bou Aririj (ALG), Ahly Tripoli (LIB), Setif (ALG), and Ahly Benighazi in the quarterfinal matches held at Sousse, Tunisia on Wednesday.

Now Ahly plays Sfax and Esperance face Etoile in the semifinal matches on Thursday where the winners qualify to the final to come one step closer the dreams of qualifying to the 2014 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil.

Ahly (EGY) did a little effort to trounce Borj Bou Arrirj (ALG) 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-18) in a match lasting 64 minutes. Ahly returned back to semis after 2 years when they finished 4th, while 2013 bronze medallists play for 5-8 positions.

Esperance (TUN) fought for 74 minutes to cruise past Setif (ALG) 3-1 (26-24, 25-17, 20-25, 25-17) to clinch their second consecutive semifinal ticket. Setif now will play for the 5 to 8 standings.

Defending champions Sfax (TUN) played their best to overcome Ahly Benighazi (LIB) in straight sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-16) in 62 minutes to claim second consecutive semis ticket. The Libyan team will now play for the 5 to 8 standings.

Organizers Etoile du Sahel completed the Tunisian trio in the semis after their clinched a tough victory 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21) in the most exciting of the quarterfinal matches.

In the quarterfinal 9 to 16 positions Prisons (KEN) beat Ittihad Tangier (MOR) 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 24-26), while FAP overcame their compatriots Bafia 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-17).

Ettihad Misurata (LIB) took over Port Douala (CMR) 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16) and finally GSU KEN) beat Espoire (COD) 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16).

In the play off 17 to 21 positions Autoridade (MOZ) set their competition first win over Mugher Cement (ETH) after a tough tiebreaker fought 3-2 (14-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-12)

8 African teams chase Volleyball Club World championship berth

2014 Men’s African Club championship

Eight African clubs will battle it out for the prestigious FIVB Club World Championship slot when they play their matches in the quarterfinal of the 2014 Men’s African Club Championship at Sousse, Tunisia on Wednesday.

The quarterfinal programme features 8 North African teams from Tunisia (3), Algeria, Libya (2 each) and Egypt (1) making a lot of traditional derbies in that region.

Ten time champions Ahly of Egypt faces Algeria’s Bourj Bouaririj who search for their first title. Hosts and 2 time champions Etoile du Sahel (TUN) line up against 2013 Bronze medallists Ahly Tripoli of Libya.

Six time champions Sfax of Tunisia meet Ahly Benighanzi of Libya in a third famous derby, while 3 time champions Esperance play Setif of Algeria in the last quarterfinal encounter.

The quarterfinal will now start the knockout stage to determine the winner of the competition which already secures a ticket to the FIVB Men’s Club Word Championship in Brazil.

Quarterfinal line up completed at Men’s Volleyball African Club Championship

2014 Men’s African Club championship- Day 5

Sousse, Tunisia, March 24, 2014- Esperance (TUN), Ahly Beni Ghanzi (LIB) from Pool C, Ahly (EGY) and Ahly Tripoli (LIB) joined the already qualified Etoile du Sahel (TUN), Borj Bou Aririj (ALG) form Pool A, Setif (ALG), Sfax (TUN) from Pool B to the quarterfinal of the 2014 Men’s African Club Championship following the fifth and last day of the preliminary round held at Sousse, Tunisia on Monday.

The qualifiers will now start the knockout stage to determine the winner of the competition which already secures a ticket to the FIVB Men’s Club Word Championship in Brazil.

The day 5 showed organizers Etoile Sportive du Sahel (TUN) defeating Bourj Bou Aririj (ALG) 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-9, 25-19) in the pool A leaders decider. Etoile finished at the top of the pool with a win loss ratio of 4-0 and Bourj came second with 3-1

Bafia (CMR) took over Nahda (SUD) 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19) to finish fourth 1-3 and Nahda came fifth with 0-4.

In Pool B Sfax of Tunisia hammered Autoridade of Mozambique 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-12) to finish as pool leaders with 4-0 and losers came fifth with 0-4.

Misurata (LIB) beat Espoir (COD) 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-14) to end the pool stage at the third position while losers came fourth.

In Pool C Esperance (TUN) flew past GSU (KEN) 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-21) to end as leaders with 5-0, while the Kenyans came third with 3-2.

Ahly Beni Ghazi (LIB) joined the quarters with a straight sets win against Mugher Cement (ETH).

Port (CMR) beat Nemo Stars (UGA) 3-2 (13-25, 25-17, 29-27,18-25,15-10).

Record holders Ahly (EGY) topped Pool D with a straight sets win over FAP (CMR) 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-22), while Ahly Tripoli improved to 3-1 with a last victory over Beau Vallon (SEY) to complete the quarterfinal line up.
