Cameroon Upset Egypt For Rio Olympic Volleyball Berth

2016 Women’s African Olympic Qualifier- Final

Cameroon booked Rio Olympic Games ticket foolowing the ground breaking victory over Egypt 3-2 (25-14, 25-27, 21-25, 25-23, 15-7) in the final of African Women’s Olympic Qualifier at Palais des Sports in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Tuesday.

Kenya clinched the bronze medal after they beat Algeria in straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) too finish third.

Cameroon will represent Africa in Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games this year, while second Egypt and third Kenya will compete in another chance to qualify in the World Olympic Qualification tournament along with Colombia (3rd of South America and Puerto Rico (3rd of NORCECA).

Cameroon v Egypt 3-2 (25-14, 25-27, 21-25, 25-23, 15-7)

Cameroon claimed the African Olympic ticket after they beat Egypt 3-2 (25-14, 25-27, 21-25, 25-23, 15-7) in the final of the qualification tournament. Cameroon led comfortably in the first set before Egypt rebounded aggressively using their tight block to come back and win 2 successive set leading 2-1. Cameroon rebounded back to win the fourth set extending the match to tiebreak where they used the spirit of their supporters to win it widely 15-7.

The powerful opposite spiker Nana Tchoudjang led Cameroon’s spikers with 21 points followed by middle blocker Stephanie Fotoso 19 points. Aya El Shami led the losers and the match with 22 points followed by Nada Meawad 15.

Kenya v Algeria 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 26-24)

Kenya claimed the bronze medal of the qualifier after they flew past Algeria 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) in the third place match. Both team played a depressive game after they missed the chance to qualify to the final, but the Kenyans were more insisted to win.

Mercy Moim led the Kenyan scorers with 7 points followed by Kibor Chelagat who contributed 6 points. Promising right attacker Yasmine Abdelrrahim led the losers with 11 points followed by captain Safia Boukhima 8. Kenya dominated the net action through their better blocking beside using the spike service to disturb the Algerians.

Kenya v Egypt, Algeria v Cameroon in Womens Olympic Volleyball Qualifier Semifinal

2016 Women’s African Olympic Volleyball Qualifier- Day 3

Kenya and Algeria led their preliminary round pools at the 2016 Women’s African Olympic Qualifier following their decisive wins over rivals Cameroon and Egypt respectively in day 3 matches held at Palais des Spots Hall in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Sunday.

Kenya’s opposite Lydia Maiyo led her team past Cameroon 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 25-9) in a thrilling encounter in front of full house supporting the home team to lead Pool A. Algeria beat their North African neighbours 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23) to lead Pool B.

Now Kenya meet Egypt and Algeria play Cameroon in the semifinal matches on today.

In the third match of the day Botswana set the first win against Uganda 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 10-25, 15-11) in the third place decider of Pool B.

The winners Botswana face Tunisia the third of Pool A in the 5th place match on Monday.

Algeria v Egypt 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23)

Algeria led Pool B after they overwhelmed Egypt 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23) in the decider for the leader of the pool after both teams already secured semifinal tickets. Egypt led comfortably in the first set before Algeria came back aggressively to win 3 successive set with their tight block and successful attacks specially through the outside hitter Yasmine Abdelrrahim. Lydia Oulmou led Algerian scorers with 10 points, while Aya El Shami led the losers with 11 points.

With the win Algeria improved their win- loss ratio to 3-0 to finish first of the pool. Egypt dropped to 2-1 to end the preliminary round in the second position. The losers were better in blocking having the advantage 10/5, while Algeria had better serving gaining 5-2 advantages in ace services.

Kenya v Cameroon 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 25-9)

Kenya defeated Cameroon 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 25-9) to top Pool A with a win- loss ratio of 2-0. Cameroon dropped to 1-1 as both teams already confirmed semifinal berth. Kenya led pool A with 6 points followed by Cameroon 2 points and Tunisia 1 point.

Kenya controlled the match through their dominance in attacks specially through the opposite attacker Lydia Maiyo who led the match scorers with 20 points aided by Lusenaka who scored impressive 15 points. Stephanie Fotoso led the losers as she contributed 12 points for her side.

Botswana v Uganda 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 10-25, 15-11)

Botswana beat Uganda in a long Marathon 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 10-25, 15-11) to finish 3rd of Pool B. Uganda started in high performance to win the first set, but Botswana rebounded quickly to 2 successive sets and lead 2-1 after they controlled the match. Uganda surprisingly came to the game in the fourth set to extend the match to tiebreaker. Uganda early led 6-1 in tiebreak before Botswana bravely fought to win 15-11.

Gasekgonwe led Botswana scorers with 17 points , while Peace Busingye led Uganda with 8 points. Botswana finished the pool matches with 1-2 record to finish third ahead of Uganda (0-3).

Semifinalists Confirmed At Women’s African Olympic Volleybal Qualifiers

The 4 semifinalists were confirmed at the 2016 Women’s African Olympic Qualifier as Kenya, Cameroon (Pool A), Algeria and Egypt (Pool B) secured final 4 positions after day 2 of the tournament held Palais des Sports hall in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Saturday.

Kenya overcame Tunisia 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-23) in Pool A to drop their opponent to their second defeat and this helped Cameroon who were in rest to capture the second position with their tiebreak victory over Tunisia on Friday.

Both Egypt and Algeria went to their second win over winless Botswana and Uganda respectively. Egypt hammered Botswana 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-17), while Algeria nailed Uganda 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12) as both team improved to 2-0 with 6 points, leaving Botswana and Uganda with 0-2.

The third and final day of the preliminary round will determine the ranling of the qualifying teams to determine the semifinal face offs as Kenya face Cameroon for the top of Pool A and Egypt play Algeria in a North African clash for Pool A top position.

Algeria v Uganda 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12)

Algeria become the first team to book semifinal ticket at the Women’s African Olympic Qualifier after they took over Uganda 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12) in Pool B match lasting 67 minutes.

Algeria improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0, while Uganda dropped to 0-2. Algeria still had 1 match in the preliminary round against Egypt to determine the pool leaders.

The Algerian coach played with most of his line up and started with the substitutes until he finished the match with the standing line up. Uganda started the match very competitive in the first set until they draw 22-22 and won the set hardly 25-22. The second and third sets showed complete Algerian dominance with the main players doing the role.

Outside hitter Kahina Arbouche led the match scorers with 13 points followed by Safia Boukhima 10. Saidat Nnungi led the Ugandans with 9 points.

Egypt v Botswana 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-17)

Egypt set second win against Botswana 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-17) to clinch the second ticket of Pool B to the semifinal of Olympic qualifier. Egypt improved their record to 2-0, while Botswana dropped to 0-2.

Botswana started the match in their best form and succeeded to lead several time until Egyptian coach changed some players to regain the rhythm and win the set narrowly 25-21 before Egypt controlled the match with their better defense and win the second and third sets.

Mariam Metwally led Egyptian scorers with 12 points, while Gasekgnwe led the losers with 7 points. The Egyptian team had advantage in blocking 11/1 and in serving 6/1 to control the victory.

Kenya v Tunisia 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-23)

Kenya led Pool A with 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-17, 25-23) against Tunisia in the match of the day. Kenya started their campaign with 1-0, while Tunisia dropped to 0-2.

Kenya led pool A with 3 points followed by Cameroon who were in rest day (2 points from 1-0) and Tunisia 3rd with 1 point from 0-2.

Suzuki Moim led the Kenyan scorers with 9 points, while Kaothar Gemail led the losers with 7 points.

Kenya dominated the first and second sets to win widely before Tunisia came back in the third set to overcome 10 point deficit and draw 22-22, but again Kenya used their experience to win the tough set 25-23.

Giants Kenya, Cameroon And Tunisia To Meet In Tough Pool At African Olympic Qualifier

African champions Kenya were drawn in a tough pool along with hosts Cameroon and the favourites Tunisia after the drawing of lots for the Women’s African Olympic qualifier held at Djeuga Hotel in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Thursday evening.

Pool B comprises of Egypt, Algeria, Botswana and Uganda. The top 2 teams in each pool will qualify to the semifinal where the winners book the tickets to Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, while the second and third of the tournament have another chance to qualify through the world Olympic qualification tournament.

Coaches of the 7 teams expressed their hopes to clinch the tickets to the prestigious Olympic games to play in the elite event.

“We are coming here to win the tournament to continue our great performance at the international level after we gained the gold medal of the World Grand Prix last year,” Said Kenya coach Japheth Munala.

“Our pool is very tough but I know my ladies are able to make it to the Olympics.” He added.

The competition will be opened on today with an epic face off between Cameroon and Tunisia in Pool A. Uganda face Egypt and Algeria line up against Botswana in Pool B
