Nestle the leading nutrition, health and wellness company has been playing a leading role in school sports development across the country.
In 1999, some schools in the south west part of the country started the championship which today has become the nation’s major resource for the game of Basketball.
Most of the nation’s big names in the game at various levels are products of the Nestle Milo Secondary schools Basketball championship.
At a press conference held in Lagos where the draws for this year’s finals were made, the MD/CEO Nestle Nigeria PLC Mr.
Dharnesh Gordhon stated that using standard Basketball facilities at this level gives the players a good opportunity to showcase their skills and sporting talents thereby giving them world class exposure here at home.
Mr. Dharnesh Gordhon adds that Nestle believes that sports is a great platform for Nigerian youths to learn positive values that set the foundation for a child’s future. Values such as respect, discipline and team work.
The grand finale of the MILO Secondary School Basketball Championship will be taking place at the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium from the 11th to the 16th of August.
The qualifiers for these finals had emerged from keenly contested qualifiers held in 4 different zones across the country over a period of 3 months.
Some of the qualifying schools are Dutse Model Int’l School and Government Girls Secondary School, Gwawaran, both from Jigawa state, St Augustine Seminary, Ezzamgbo of Ebonyi state; Osadennis High School Asaba and West End Mixed Secondary School,Bayelsa State.
Others are St. Jude’s Girls Secondary School, Amarata, Jesus College, Oturkpo, Government Girls Secondary School Gboko and CAC Grammar School, Akure.
Henson Demonstration Group of Schools Benin, Ilupeju Grammar School, Lagos and Yejide Girls Secondary School, Ibadan complete the list of finalists.
The qualifying teams are expected to arrive Lagos on the 11th of August while their departure has been slated for the 17th of August, 2014.
