FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships 2015: Great Britain Sees Challenge From Netherlands On First Day Of Team Competition

Great Britain saw off a formidable challenge from the Netherlands to take the lead in the first part of the Team competition today at the FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships 2015 in Deauville (FRA).

The Netherlands’ riders won three of the five tests on offer today, but strong performances from Great Britain’s Sophie Christiansen, Anne Dunham and Sophie Wells gave the British team a slight advantage after the first day of competition.

Competing in Grade Ia, Christiansen obtained the highest score of the day with 76.130% on her new horse Athene Lindebjerg, a sweet victory as this is their first major championships together. Teammate Dunham placed second with 75.261%, a fraction ahead of Norway’s Jens Lasse Dokkan. These scores, combined with a strong performance from Wells, were enough for Team GBR to gain the lead at the end of day one.

“I knew we had to raise our score and ride a solid test,” said Christiansen. “When I went into the arena though, that was not what I was thinking about. I was thinking about my horse and hoping to get the best out of her, and I knew that would come. I was quite nervous going in there today not knowing how she would react. I’m so proud of Athene and my team.”

Such was the strength of the Grade Ia competition that its top four placed athletes were the highest scoring athletes across all grades today.

In Grade Ib, Nicole Den Dulk led the charge scoring 73.120% on Wallace N.O.P. to take the win. Second place went to Stinna Tange Kaastrup of Denmark, while Austria’s Pepo Puch took third.

Den Dulk said: “I won! It doesn’t happen often that I beat two Olympic and world champions. It was a great ride and my confidence was there, and I know we can do it. You need a bit of luck as well, but I was still up two per cent and I hope to do it again tomorrow. We have a tough group with a lot of competition, but competition makes you stronger, and for me it’s just a great day.”

Den Dulk’s teammate Frank Hosmar, individual, freestyle and team bronze medallist at London 2012 and double bronze medallist at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014, scored his very first European Championship victory in today’s Grade IV. Riding Alphaville N.O.P. his healthy 74.00% put Great Britain’s Sophie Wells into second place, with Germany’s Carolin Schnarre and Denmark’s Line Kongensgaard joint third.

Hosmar said: “This is my first European Championship win! We’ve trained a lot and Alphaville is getting stronger. Now we can really get into the details and that’s working out really well. I’ve had him since he was four, and he’s now 10. All the pieces are falling together now.”

Making her European Championship debut, current Grade II world champion Rixt Van Der Horst (NED) won her class just ahead of Great Britain’s Natasha Baker and Belgium’s Barbara Minneci. Riding Uniek NOP, Van Der Horst scored 72.618%.

“I’m very happy. I was relaxed and he [Uniek NOP] gave me a really good feeling and felt great,” said Der Horst. “We had a really good test. I’ve won all my international tests this year and he is getting better and better. We improve every time.”

Germany’s Hannelore Brenner won the Grade III on Women of the World. The multi European, World and Paralympic Champion scored 71.474%, to finish just ahead of Anne Katrin Lubbe from Norway, and the Netherlands’ Lotte Krijnsen. Germany currently lies in third place for the Team competition.

USA’s Hancock and Italy’s Palmucci win the last two World Championship Golds

Vincent Hancock and Valerio Palmucci claimed the Skeet Men and the Skeet Men Junior titles, rocketing Italy and United States in 1st and 3rd place in the final medal standings, where the Russian Federation placed 2nd.

There couldn’t have been a better ending for the 2015 ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Lonato.

The Skeet Men Gold medal match turned into a top-level battle between France’s Anthony Terras and USA’s Vincent Hancock, with the latter prevailing over Terras after a breathtaking shoot-off. Both athletes, in fact, shuttered 16-out-of-16 final targets, and it took 8 more to witness the first mistake and award the World Championship title to Hancock.

“I feel sorry for Terras. I feel he deserved to win. Of course I would not let anybody else win if I get the chance, but he shot so good.” He then admitted. “He shot a perfect match. That’s something I have already done before, and trust me it’s not easy.”

Terras, who previously concluded the qualification round with the equalled-World Record score of 125 hits, continued his perfect streak during the semifinal, where he marked 16 points. His score was the best one among the six finalists, tied with Hancock and ahead of Italy’s Gabriel Rossetti and Denmark’s Jesper Hansen, who both qualified for the Bronze medal match.

In the 3rd place final, Rossetti, 20 years old and current holder of the European and World Junior Championship titles, bested Hansen, Silver medallist in Al Ain (UAE) during the 2015 ISSF World Cup, with a final score of 15 targets against 14.

Previously, at the end of the semifinal, Argentinian shooter Federico Gil, 6th in this event at the Toronto 2015 Pan-Am Games, concluded with 12 hits, placing 5th, while Azmy Mehelba of Egypt placed 6th with a final semifinal score of 11.

At the end of the qualification round, France pocketed the Team Gold medal with 364 total points; Italy followed in 2nd place with 362, while USA finished in 3rd place with 360.

Mairaj Ahmad Khan of India and Ralf Buchheim of Germany ended up winning an Olympic quota place for their country, placing 7th and 8th.

In the Skeet Men Junior event, Valerio Palmucci of Italy claimed the Gold medal, prevailing over USA’s Phillip Russell Jungman in the Gold medal match. Antoher Italian junior athlete, Cristian Ciccotti, lost the Bronze medal match in favor of Nicolas Vasiliou of Cyprus. Finland’s Eetu Kallionen and France’s Dylan Chauray ended the semifnal in 5th and 6th place, respectively.

Today’s men’s and men’s junior Skeet finals concluded the 2015 ISSF Shotgun World Championship conducted in Lonato, Italy, from the 10th through the 17th of September.

In the medal standings the host country, Italy, finished atop of the overall medal standings, with 4 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals (including individual, teams, senior and junior medals). The Russian Federation followed in second place with 11 medals (4 gold, 6 silver, 1 bronze), while the United States of America took the third place – thanks to today’s gold won by Vincent Hancock at the men’s skeet final – with a total of 12 medals (4 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze).

The final competition of the season will occur in Nicosia (CYP), where from October 15th to October 21st the best shooters of the 2015 ISSF season will battle for the five Shotgun World Cup Final titles.

ODEGBAMI REJECTS NFF CONDITIONS On FIFA PRESIDENCY.

Former Nigerian international, Segun Odegbami, has protested against the criteria set by the Nigeria Football Federation for nomination of a candidate for FIFA presidential election.

NFF had said that a prospective candidate must obtain endorsements from their state Football Associations, the National Sports Commission and the Confederation of African Football.

But Odegbami in a letter addressed to the federation President, Amaju Pinnick, and copied to Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari, the FIFA General Secretary, Jerome Valcke and CAF President, Issa Hayatou, described the endorsements from the NSC and CAF as unnecessary.

Odegbami describes the conditions as odd and a product of a lack of familiarity with the guidelines for the FIFA presidential elections.

“Why will amaju tell me to go and meet amos adamu or issa hayatou for endorsement, amaju does not like my bid or support my bid to become the president of fifa, probably because have played the game before, two weeks after my declaration amaju hasnt called me, I sat down with him and i told him about my plans to run for the fifa presidency, at first he said it was good but later he told me he was going to speak to some other federation heads to support me, i later heard him on tv saying i should go meet some people for endorsement.”

The deadline for candidates to formally present their nominations through their home federations, with other supporting documents, is October 26. Candidates will also undergo an integrity test, through FIFA’s ad-hoc election committee.

The Super Eagles played a draw in Tanzania then later won their first game under Oliseh, after they defeated Niger Republic in a friendly game recently.

Nigeria will step up their preparations for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with two international friendly fixtures next month, against Congo and Cameroon in Belgium but Okumagba sees the two matches as key to get Nigeria into shape.

“i think the eagles will soon bounce back to winning ways, we all saw what happened in Tanzania, it was Oliseh’s first litmus test, which wasnt that bad, a draw and a win against niger in the international friendly, but i think the next two friendlies will help the eagles come back to winning ways.”
