Amuneke: Only the best players for Chile 2015

Thursday, September 17th is exactly one month away from Nigeria’s opening Group A match against the USA at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015, and as the defending champions, much is being expected from the Golden Eaglets, presently under the watch of Coach Emmanuel Amuneke.

Speaking against the background of the team’s performance at the recent Suwon International Youth (U-17) Tournament in Korea Republic, the former African Footballer of the Year told thenff.com that
only the best players would be selected to represent the country in Chile. Excerpts…

Thenff.com: It is exactly a month to Nigeria’s first match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, against USA. What is the state of your team, Golden Eaglets?

Amuneke: The state of our team is that we are still preparing. We are glad that we were part of the Intercontinental competition in Suwon, Korea because it gave us the opportunity to access the players individually and collectively, as a team. So, we are working towards the World Cup in Chile and we
are hopeful that we would be able to give a good account of ourselves when we get to Chile. In football, you can say that everything has been done at this stage; it is a continuous process even when we get
to the World Cup because you still have to prepare the team in order to face the challenges of the matches to be played.

Eaglets training in Suwon
Eaglets training in Suwon

Thenff.com: The Eaglets came third at the intercontinental tournament in Suwon. Were you satisfied with the performance of the team generally?

Amuneke: We were not bothered about the final position of the team at the tournament in Suwon; rather, we were concerned with the response of the players based on what we are demanding from them in terms of their individual and collective behaviors when we have the ball and when we don’t have the ball. I’m happy for the players because they gave a very good account of themselves and that gives us hope that we will do our best at the World Cup. However, we are not getting carried away about anything yet. We are still working on our lapses and when we go to our training camp in Argentina, we will intensify our preparation so that whenOctober 17th comes, we would be ready to play and give
our best against USA.

Thenff.com: Who were the players that impressed you most in Korea?

Amuneke: I don’t think at this moment or at this category, we should be talking about individual players, and I have tried to channel my thoughts on looking at the team collectively rather than as individuals. I want all the players to feel important and there is no reason to be picking one player or the other for special praise. Of course, we have added some new boys into the team and we are happy they have shown to us that they can play. We just have to remain focused and it is our prayers that they would also be able to give a good account of themselves at the World Cup.

Thenff.com: Very soon, you would have to pick the 21 players for the World Cup; do you have them in your head already?

Amuneke: (Laughter)….No. I don’t have anybody in my head. Selecting the best 21 players is not as easy as that. We, I mean the technical crew, have to sit down and evaluate the performance of the players; and pick the ones that would be very useful to us. We still have days to the World Cup but we would evaluate the players so that at the end of the day, we would take only those who can do the business for us in Chile. Only the best players would be taken to Chile because I want all the
players to be able to play when occasion demands. We want all the players to have high sense of responsibility because you can’t predict what would happen; so all of them must be ready to play at any point in time. That is why we involve everybody when we are training in order for everybody to be on the same page. When the time comes, we will pick those that would make us proud.

Thenff.com: Nigeria is the defending champion of the FIFA U-17 World Cup trophy. Are you under any pressure going to Chile?

Amuneke Emmanuel Golden Eaglets Coach
Amuneke Emmanuel Golden Eaglets Coach

Amuneke: I’m not under any pressure but I have the sense of direction that we are the defending champions at this level. I don’t want us to dwell so much on that. We keep working quietly and hard; when the time comes, we shall be ready. We must psyche ourselves that we can do it, but I’m not under any pressure. I think I’ve always been used to pressure, previously as a player and now as a coach. I believe in hard work and I don’t think hard work disappoints anyone.

Thenff.com: You played against Korea, Brazil and Croatia at the tournament in Suwon. Can you confidently say your team would be able to cope well at the World Cup?

Amuneke: Yes, we are going to cope very well and that is why we are the defending champions. No team would be a push -over at the World Cup and it was great we went to Suwon because our boys can now see a clear picture of what to expect in Chile. All the 24 teams going to Chile have one objective: To win the World Cup. That means we must be on top of our game if we want to win. We would be ready for the World Cup, that I can assure you.

Newfanzone Bookies Corner (Game week 6)

Our pick of the weekend has returned after the mid-week games in Europe and some teams have turned their fortunes around and will hope to transfer the form into their league matches. Players who have been rested will also make a return after a deserved rest and also look to make immediate impact for their club.

Tobi Olubiyi’s (@tobipreety) predictions:

La Liga

SPANISH LA LIGA

Sevilla Vs Celta – Both teams to score (BTTS): Sevilla had a fantastic game in the Champions League at home against German club Borussia Monchengladbach scoring 3 goals. Unai Emery’s men have not won a league game this season but I believe they will score at least a goal against high flying Celta Vigo who are yet to loose this season and have scored 8 goals. I expect both teams to get a get at least a goal each in this game.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid Vs Granada – Real Madrid win: Real Madrid have been in fine form this season scoring goals without remorse. They scored 4 against Ukraine giants Shaktar Donesk with Attacker Cristiano Ronaldo scoring 8 goals in his last 2 games and is close to setting a new goal scoring record in Real Madrid. Granada have lost twice this season conceding 7 goals. Los Blancos would be too strong for Granada especially at the Bernabau.

Chelsea Vs Arsenal – Arsenal win/draw : Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are having their worst possible start to a League campaign in decades and they are currently in 17th place , winning just once in 5 league games but the Blues had an emphatic 4-nil victory mid week against a poor Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal rested a few players in their Champions league game and lost to Dynamo Zagreb who have not tasted defeat in their last 47 matches.
Arsenal have been the in-form team compared to Chelsea so far this season and I believe arsenal will do enough to get at least a point from Chelsea.

Swansea Vs Everton – Both teams to score (BTTS): Ayew and Gomis have made Swansea an overly attacking team this season contributing to the lot of the teams’s goals so far this campaign. Swansea have scored in 4 of the 5 games they have played this season. Roberto Martinez got a well deserved victory against Chelsea last match day scoring 3 goals against the defending Champions.
I expect both teams to go all out for maximum points, this will be an interesting game with both teams getting on the score sheet.

ITALIAN SERIE A

Italian Serie A

Roma Vs Sassuolo – Roma win : Stadio Olympico is a fortress for Roma and their form this season has seen them undefeated so far including a victory against defending champions Juventus. Sassuolo will have to show something special to get anything in this game.

‎Chievo Vs Inter milan – Under 2.5: Second placed Chievo have had a dream start to the season so far winning 2 games and conceding just 2 goals and are having a uphill task against Inter Milan who have an 100% record this season. Inter have not scored much and the also do not give away a lot of goals, this will be a cagey game and both teams would want to avoid a defeat and concede few or none. I see this as a tight game between the top 2 teams and there will be less than 3 goals scored by both teams.

GERMAN BUNDESLIGA

Wolfsburg Vs Hertha BSC – Wolfsburg win : Wolfsburg have invested wisely in the summer after the departure of star player De Bruyne. They have started life without him positively by remaining unbeaten in 4 league games. Dardai’s Hertha have also been impressive with just 1 defeat in 4 league matches, but the firepower of Schurlle, Verinha, Draxler behind Bas Dost will be too ferocious for the Hertha defense line lead by Plattenhardt. Wolfsburg will do enough to get the victory at the Volkswagen arena

Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund Vs Bayern Leverkusen – Both teams to Score (BTTS) : Dortmund are one of only 2 teams in Bundesliga with a 100% record this season and a tie against Leverkusen could be tricky especially after the visitors scored 4 goals against BATE Borisov in the Champions League. Both teams would get goals in this game as they are both good attacking sides.

FRENCH LIGUE 1

french ligue1

Monaco Vs Lorient – Monaco win : Leandro Jardim’s men have started the season slowly with 2 wins from 5 games. They lost their last home match against high flying Champions PSG in a 3 nil white-wash. I see them returning the smiles to the grim faces of the Stade Louis Faithfull with a victory against Lorient who have won just once this season.

Marseille Vs Lyon – Over 2.5 goals : This is the biggest fixture in the French Ligue Un this weekend and I expect it to live up to expectations with both teams giving us an exciting match with lots of goals. Marseille have scored 10 goals which is the highest in the league so far this season while Lyon have scored 6 goals.

Ademola Adejuwon’s (@demydemo) predictions:

English Premier League

Barclays Premier League
Barclays Premier League

Chelsea vs Arsenal- Double Chance on Chelsea: Chelsea are not in good form in the league at the moment where they have lost 3 games in 5. The defending Champions got back to winning ways against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the UCL on Wednesday and they would hope they can bring that sort of form to the table when they play against their London neighbours Arsenal who are not in Scintillating form themselves. Jose Mourinho has never lost to Arsene Wenger in the league and I think this will continue this weekend when the Gunners visit the Bridge.

Liverpool vs Norwich- Liverpool win:

liverpool fc logo

Liverpool would want to put the woes of their last two games behind them when they welcome the Canaries. Norwich would be happy that Suarez no longer plays for Liverpool. Coutinho is back for this one after serving his suspension and in him they have someone that could lead the team going forward. Benteke has two goals so far this season with a wonder against Manchester united and if he wants to get plenty of goals for Liverpool he needs to start scoring against smaller teams like Norwich.

Manchester City vs WestHam- Over 1.5goals:

Manchester_City.svg

Giant killing West-Ham United visit league leaders Manchester City. The Citizens have yet to concede a goal in the league this season with a sturdy defence made up of Kompany, Kolarov,Sagna and Mangala. West Ham have defeated Arsenal and Liverpool away from home this season and they won’t be scared facing City at the Etihad. An over 1.5 is a safe bet knowing both sides are capable of getting a goal or two in this fixture.

Real Madrid vs Granada- Real Madrid win and over 2.5 goals: Real Madrid are in red hot form at the moment especially their talismanic winger Cristiano Ronaldo who has banged in 8 goals in two games. Rafael Benitez side have yet to concede a goal which means they have found a way to balance attack and defence. Trust Ronaldo to get a goal or two in this one at the Bernabeu.

German Bundesliga

German Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen- Both teams to score(BTTS):

Dortmund have been doing fine in the league this season with an 100% record so far. This weekend they welcome a very tricky side in Leverkusen who are basking in the euphoria of their 4-1 victory in the Champions league. Dortmund have scored a lot of goals this season but they’ve also manage to ship in a little which means Leverkusen will have joy going forward especially with the kind of quality they possess offensively in Chicharito, Bellarabi, Hakan and Kiessling. Both team to score will be a safe bet here and trust this game not to disappoint.

Wolfsburg vs Hertha Berlin- Wolfsburg win:

Wolfsburg are in good form at the moment which sees them sit in 3rd position in the Bundesliga at the moment. They lost De Bruyne to Manchester City but in Draxler they have found a perfect replacement for the young Belgian. Hertha has not been bad themselves losing just one games so far but I don’t think they have the squad to push Wolfsburg all the way.

Bayern Munich

Darmstadt vs Bayern Munich- over 1.5 goals:

Unbeaten Darmstadt welcome defending Champions Bayern to their home. Bayern thus season have found goals easy to come by with Muller,Lewandowski and Costa doing the damage upfront for the Bavarians. Darmstadt have scored 4 and Conceded 3 goals this season which means they might not be given Guardiola’s men too many chances.

French Ligue 1

Monaco vs Lorient (Monaco double chance)

Monaco are in good form in the league at the moment and this weekend they welcome 17th place Lorient who win their first game last week at home to newly promoted Angers. Monaco’s team play has helped them a lot so far this season after losing key players like Abdennour,Kondogbia Carassco and Martial. They may suffer from fatigue due to their Europa league engagement on Thursday but trust them to at least get a point from this game.

Reims vs PSG- double chance(Win or draw) on PSG:

League leaders PSG travel to 3rd place Reims. PSG form is good at the moment with Di Maria and Cavani doing the needful for them. Reims are no pushovers themselves being in third place but trust the Paris Landlords to get something from this game . It’s going to be tough but with the quality PSG possess they should at least get a draw in the encounter.

Italian Serie A

AS Roma logo

Roma vs Sassuolo- Roma win:

Roma hosts Unbeaten Sassuolo who were held to a draw last time out against Atalanta. Roma held Barcelona to a draw in Rome during the week and their attack of Dzeko, Salah Gervinho is strong enough to defeat any Italian team especially when they play at home.

Paul Ayorinde’s (@El_pauleta) predictions

French Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain, psg

Reims V PSG- PSG win: Paris Saint-Germain will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s draw against Bordeaux. Reims are a very compact and disciplined side, PSG have won once in the last three meetings at the Stade Auguste Delaune II. I tip PSG to dig deep and get a slim away win.

Rennes V Lille- Double chance(Win or draw) on Rennes: Rennes are in top form in the Ligue 1 this season losing just one game while Lille has been struggling in the league with just one win in the last 5 matches. I expect Lille to be defensive and Rennes might find it hard to break them down. I am predicting a win or draw for Rennes on Friday night.

Italian Serie A

inter milan

Chievo V Inter Milan- Double chance(win or draw) on Inter: Chievo were denied a 100% start to their season because of a number of poor refereeing decisions at the Juventus arena. Inter maintained their winning run with an important win over city rivals AC Milan. Chievo and Inter are in good form, so i expect the match to be tight. I tip Inter Milan to get a least a draw away from home.

Napoli V Lazio- Both teams to score(BTTS): Napoli continue to struggle in the league while Lazio got their second win of the season last weekend. Both teams are blessed with attacking talents,so i expect a great game of football. I tip both teams to score at Stadio San Paolo on Sunday.

German Bundesliga

Bayern Munich

Darmstadt 98 V Bayern Munich- Bayern Munich win with over 2.5 goals: Darmstadt have been impressive this season getting good results away from home but I expect Bayern Munich “fire power” to be too much for them. I tip Bayern to win with lots of goals.

Cologne V Borussia Monchengladbach- Double chance(Win or draw) on Cologne: Monchengladbach can’t seem to get a good result this season and i don’t expect them to get a win at the RheinEnergie stadion on Saturday. I am tipping Cologne to get at least a draw at home.

Borussia Dortmund V Bayer Leverkusen- Dortmund win with over 2.5 goals: Dortmund are in top form while Leverkusen are yet to hit top-gear in the league. I expect Dortmund to dominate the match and get a win in an high-scoring game.

Spanish BBVA Liga

German Bundesliga

Real Madrid V Granada- Real Madrid win with over 3.5 goals: Real Madrid and 2014 Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo are scoring goals with ease. I expect the game at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu to be a goal fest. I tip Real Madrid to win with over 3.5 goals.

English Premier League

Manchester City V West Ham: Man City win: Manchester City have got off to a perfect start to the season winning all 5 of their opening fixtures without conceding a single goal. I expect them to defeat an high-flying West Ham United in a tight match at the Etihad on Saturday.

APB Heavyweight Champion Will Be Determined By Egorov vs Russo III

The APB World Championship Matches continues on Friday night in Moscow, Russia where Heavyweight (91 kg) Champion Aleksey Egorov defends his title for the first time against the number one contender Clemente Russo (ITA).

Boxing fans around the world can view the action from 19:00 (GMT +3) at https://www.youtube.com/user/AIBAproboxingTV while the event will also be broadcasted by TV Boetz.

Egorov established himself as the most dominant APB Heavyweight by winning all four of his matches, and he became the Inaugural Champion after a close points win over Russo last January.

That was the second time Egorov had beaten Russo in this competition, and though each bout proved to be incredibly narrow, they both took place in Italy which makes Egorov’s victories over such an outstanding competitor even more impressive.

The 24-year-old Champion is proud of his current APB achievements, but is firmly focused on adding to his superb reputation.

“I’m looking forward to this fight. I have been training hard and I’ll be ready to succeed. My first two matches with Russo were not easy at all. The audience was very supportive to him and I had to overcome the pressure, which I eventually did,” he said.

“Fighting in Italy isn’t much different than fighting anywhere else, and I got used to it. During the second fight, I even had supporters in the Italian audience. For our third match, I never pursue knockouts but it’s an awesome way to end a match, I would not be against ending the fight with a knockout.”

For the first time in the trilogy, Egorov will enjoy home advantage against Russo, but his decorated opponent has arrived in Moscow in tremendous form.

Cycle I victories over Anton Pinchuk (KAZ) and Roman Golovashchenko (UKR) have revitalised Russo’s APB career, and after a career which has seen him earn many major honours, a pro World Championship is finally in his grap.

The Italian has won two AIBA World Boxing Championships and two Olympic Games silver medals, but believes that becoming APB Champion would be: “a great achievement for me to reach, especially because I have dedicated two years of training for it. This would be one of the most important milestones for me to accomplish.”

Aleksey Egorov defends his title for the first time against the number one contender Clemente Russo
Aleksey Egorov defends his title for the first time against the number one contender Clemente Russo

Unlike their first two matches which took place over six and eight rounds respectively, the title match will be a 12 round battle, which the challenger is more than happy with.

“I’m not nervous about the 12 rounds. Egorov is very skillful and strong, but I’m ready to go to Russia to win,” he confirmed.

The longer distance will suit the attributes of the two athletes, as they both have tremendous stamina and train intensely all year round.

Egorov uses a pressure heavy style with plenty of jabs that allows him to control matches, while Russo’s elusive movement and fluid footwork should open gaps during the bout.

A boxing match between two world class Heavyweights is always met with keen interest, but with the prestigious APB belt adding even more cachet to this contest, the event has the potential to be one of the most captivating moments of the year.

In Memoriam: Johannes “Hansi” Wallmeier (GER), 1942-2015

Hansi Wallmeier (GER), one of the most well-respected people in national and international equestrian sport, has passed away. He died on 8 September, the day before his 74th birthday, in Bielefeld after a long battle with cancer.

The son of a stable manager, Wallmeier was just 15 years old when he began his commercial apprenticeship at the German Olympic Committee for Equestrian Sports in Warendorf on 1 April 1957, working in the National Federation (FN) Sports Department.

Wallmeier started his career as a flat jockey, before going on to become an accomplished amateur rider, competing successfully in Dressage and Jumping, with 35 victories to his name.

In 1970, Wallmeier switched his focus to judging and, eight years later, became director of the German Association of Judges in Warendorf. After 50 years of service as one of the longest-serving officials in the National Federation, he took his well-earned retirement in April 2007.

Internationally known for his role as an FEI Steward, Wallmeier was a strong advocate for compliance with the FEI rules and regulations, ensuring horse welfare came first. A horseman through and through, he was seen more as a helper and advisor for both riders and horses. He was well respected by the athletes as a real partner of equestrian sport. The highlight of his stewarding career came in 2006 when he was FEI Chief Steward at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Aachen (GER).

Renowned for his significant contribution to clean and fair sport, Wallmeier was honored by the German National Federation in 2006 with the presentation of the Reiterkreuz in Silber (Rider Silver Cross) award. He was also presented with the Horsemanship award by the German Association for the Protection of Horses, as well as the PSI award, celebrating his outstanding contribution to equestrian sport.

“Hansi Wallmeier was a great horseman and a true role model for the entire equestrian world”, Secretary General of the German National Federation Soenke Lauterbach said.

“Hansi Wallmeier was a really wonderful person, who contributed greatly to the sport of Jumping”, FEI Jumping Director John Roche said. “We are extremely grateful for the service he gave to equestrian sport as an international Judge and Steward. He will be greatly missed on the international circuit.”

The FEI expresses its sincere condolences to Hansi Wallmeier’s family, his many friends, the German Equestrian Federation and the global Jumping community.

Magic In Moscow Anticipated As Ehsan Rouzbahani Defends His APB Light Heavyweight Title Against Mathieu Bauderlique

Moscow, Russia will host two APB World Championship Matches on Friday night, including a first title defence for Light Heavyweight (81 kg) Champion Ehsan Rouzbahani (IRI) against Mathieu Bauderlique (FRA).

Boxing fans around the world can view the action from 19:00 (GMT +3) at https://www.youtube.com/user/AIBAproboxingTV while the event will also be broadcasted by TV Boetz.

27-year-old Rouzbahani won the Inaugural Light Heavyweight Championship earlier this year against Kennedy St. Pierre (MRI), and has excelled in APB with three impressive victories.

The Iranian star defeated Bauderlique last December over six pulsating frames, with their eagerly anticipated rematch scheduled for 12 rounds.

This fight brings together two of the biggest punchers in the Light Heavyweight division, as the powerful Rouzbahani meets a rival who has performed spectacularly in recent matches.

Bauderlique’s last three opponents have all failed to hear the final bell, after the Frenchman stopped both Nikita Ivanov (RUS) and Joseph Ward (IRE) in dramatic fashion, before his truncated Cycle I Round 2 bout with Spas Genov (BUL) was halted in the second round.

“I lost to Rouzbahani narrowly in our first bout after he took advantage following a knockdown in the 4th round, but I managed to reduce the gap throughout the fight, and that’s why a 12 round bout will be a serious advantage for me,” remarked Bauderlique ahead of his title match.

Magic in Moscow anticipated as Ehsan Rouzbahani defends his APB Light Heavyweight title against Mathieu Bauderlique
Magic in Moscow anticipated as Ehsan Rouzbahani defends his APB Light Heavyweight title against Mathieu Bauderlique

“Rouzbahani is indeed a great boxer and he’ll be ready to face me, but this bout will be different from the first because I am an instinctive boxer which everyone will see on the night. In any case, I want to win the belt, and he’ll be ready to defend it.”

Considering the power both men possess, many boxing fans are anticipating the contest to be an all-out war, but there is more to the boxers than just knockouts.

Bauderlique is an incredibly resilient fighter with a great chin and tremendous timing, while Rouzbahani has remarkable movement and one of the best jabs in APB.

Fireworks are expected in Moscow as the outstanding Champion and challenger battle it out for the coveted APB belt, and fans are advised to keep their eyes glued to the action at all times.

FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships 2015: Twenty Nations Head To First Championships To Be Held In France #EuroPara2015

A total of 75 athletes from 20 nations will compete at the FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships 2015 which get underway tomorrow (18 September) in Deauville (FRA), where a three-day battle for medals will take place alongside one of the last major pushes for world ranking points for Rio 2016 Paralympic Games qualification.

Just one year after the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Normandy (FRA), the region, which is steeped in equestrian sport, will once again be welcoming spectators with open arms, and with free entry, to France’s very first FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships.

FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships 2015: Twenty nations head to first Championships to be held in France

Great Britain faces toughest competition yet

British riders have been the ones to beat for pretty much the entire history of Para-Equestrian Dressage, but over the last few years there have been signs of a real challenge to this dominance from other European athletes.

While Team GBR is as determined as ever to keep the top spot, a number of key rivalries are developing in the sport’s five grades, including a fascinating head-to-head between the Netherlands and Germany.

Grade Ia has, for the last few years at least, been dominated by Britain’s Sophie Christiansen. She famously took three gold medals – team, individual and freestyle – at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, and swiftly repeated this at the JYSK FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships 2013.

At last year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™, Christiansen was a hot favourite to repeat “the triple” and become one of the few athletes to hold Paralympic, European and World titles simultaneously. While she smoothly took the individual honours in Normandy, Italy’s Sara Morganti, who won individual and freestyle bronze at the 2013 Europeans, beat Christiansen in the freestyle with a superb display of horsemanship to the My Fair Lady soundtrack.

Both athletes will also have to tackle the challenge posed by Great Britain’s Anne Dunham, who won consecutive gold medals at four Paralympic Games starting in Atlanta in 1996, and is Christiansen’s closest domestic rival. Dunham took home double silver and team gold at the 2013 Europeans, and is definitely one to watch in Deauville.

Tough at the top

Great Britain’s Lee Pearson, the 10-time Paralympic gold medalist, had a disappointing London 2012 by his own high standards. He was aiming for his 11th gold medal, which would have matched the tally achieved by wheelchair racer Tanni Grey-Thompson, but although Pearson was on the gold medal winning team in London, he had to settle for freestyle bronze and individual silver. He wasn’t selected for the 2013 Europeans but, used to overcoming challenges, Pearson worked solidly on his new horse, Zion, to come storming back at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 to take the team, individual and freestyle Ib titles.

In Deauville, Pearson will once again be up against the London 2012 winner, and current double European champion and World silver medalist, Austria’s Pepo Puch.

But it’s not just Pearson and Puch in the running for the medals. Add in the Netherlands’ double World bronze winning Nicole Den Dulk to the mix, and then stir in former World Champion Stinna Tange Kaastrup of Denmark, the double bronze medalist at the 2013 Europeans, and the Grade Ib competition could be the most exciting of these Championships.

Real surprise

The real surprise of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 was the sudden emergence of Dutch superstar Rixt Van Der Horst in Grade II. Competing at her first major international, the young rider knocked outright favourite Natasha Baker (GBR), the London 2012 individual and freestyle gold medalist and triple gold medalist at the 2013 Europeans, off the top of the podium to take both individual titles.

Since then, Van Der Horst has used that experience to rack up a slew of top scores in competitions across Europe, and will definitely be out to prove that the Worlds was not a one-off.

Baker, on exciting new horse Sooki St James, will also be aiming to lay the crucial groundwork ahead of next year’s Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, which she says is now her number one focus.

German/Dutch face-off

Germany’s Hannelore Brenner and the Netherlands’ Sanne Voets will be going head-to-head in Grade III. Until the 2013 Europeans, Brenner had won pretty much every major championship she competed in, scoring straight golds at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games and the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2010 in Kentucky (USA).

But that changed in 2013, when Voets took the European title in the freestyle, a feat she repeated at last year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Normandy.

Home advantage could well come into play this year too. France has its best chance of a Grade III medal at these Championships with José Letarte, who took double bronze at the 2013 Europeans.

Denmark’s Stinna Tange Kaastrup, former World Grade Ib champion and 2011 European freestyle gold medallist, scored double bronze at the 2013 Europeans. She will be looking to get back on top at the three-day FEI European Para-Dressage Championships 2013 in Deauville, France, which start tomorrow. (Liz Gregg/FEI)

Dutch courage

Belgium’s Michèle George is the rider to beat in the Grade IV competition, and Britain’s Sophie Wells will be out to do just that. Following World and European success in 2010 and 2011 respectively, Wells was hoping home advantage would swing things her way at London 2012, but it was not to be, and she took individual and freestyle silver behind George.

The pendulum swung back in Wells’ favour at the 2013 Europeans, but while the British athlete swept up three golds, setting the stage for a mighty battle in Normandy last year, it was George who topped the podium in Normandy, taking both titles in a thrilling competition.

The Netherlands’ Frank Hosmar is also a force to be reckoned with in Grade IV. He won individual and freestyle bronze at London 2012 and in Normandy last year, behind George and Wells, and double silver at the 2013 Europeans.

As with all the Dutch riders, the sense of imminent breakthrough at the FEI European Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships 2015 is strong.

Five world-class cities in strong competition for Olympic Games 2024

IOC to contribute USD 1.7 billion to the local organising committee

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is delighted to announce a very strong field of candidates for the Olympic Games 2024. Five cities – Budapest (HUN), Hamburg (GER), Los Angeles (USA), Paris (FRA), and Rome (ITA)* – will compete to host the Olympic Games 2024 after submitting their applications to the IOC by last night’s midnight deadline.

In line with Olympic Agenda 2020, the Host City Contract 2024 was published today. The IOC will contribute USD 1.7 billion in cash and services to the organising committee for the Olympic Games 2024.

“We are welcoming five outstanding and highly qualified Candidate Cities,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Olympic Agenda 2020 has shaped the Candidature Process more as an invitation and the cities have responded by engaging with the IOC through dialogue and cooperation. In the new invitation process the IOC learnt that all the candidates are embracing Olympic Agenda 2020 from their respective vision for the future of their city. Sustainability and legacy are the cornerstones of each candidature.”

In keeping with its commitment to good governance, transparency and ethics, following Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC today published all the documents related to the Candidature: Candidature Process Olympic Games 2024, Candidature Questionnaire Olympic Games 2024, Host City Contract Principles, and Host City Contract Operational Requirements. This is the first time that the full package of documentation has been made public at the very outset of the process.

With their candidatures, the five cities commit themselves to respect the Olympic Charter and the Host City Contract for all participants of the Games and all Games-related matters. In this context, the IOC made changes to the Host City Contract, including:

– Reference to sexual orientation in the non-discrimination clause as part of the Host City Contract Principles with overarching significance for the entire Olympic Games’ project. The IOC is clear that sport is a human right and should be available to all regardless of race, sex or sexual orientation as stated in the Olympic Charter

– The freedom of media to report on the Olympic Games is now integrated in the Host City Contract Principles

– An amendment on labour law compliance that states: “The City, the NOC and the OCOG shall take all necessary measures to ensure that development projects and other projects necessary for the organisation of the Games comply with local, regional and national legislation and international agreements and protocols, applicable in the Host Country with regard to planning, construction, protection of the environment, health and safety, labour and anti-corruption laws.”

In light of Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC has distilled down over 7,000 pages of Technical Manuals into fewer than 350 pages of contractually binding Host City Contract Operational Requirements. For the organisation of the Games, the IOC is providing the future organising committee an extensive transfer of knowledge including the Olympic Games Guides.

With their applications, the cities have to follow the strict Rules of Conduct for Candidate Cities, which regulate all forms of communication between the Candidate Cities, IOC Members and oth
