Rasu’s Big Hitting Takes Vanuatu To Victory On Day Two Of The ICC World Cricket League Division 6 in Essex

Joshua Rasu’s big hitting took Vanuatu to a win over Norway today at The Glebe ground in Essex on day two of the ICC World Cricket League Division 6.

Norway, in their first match of the tournament, kicked off their campaign with the bat in disastrous style as they lost early wickets in the opening six overs to reduce them to 19-2. Suhail Ifthikar (37) and Zeeshan Siddiqui (45) steadied the ship but Norway struggled with their running between the wickets and suffered three run-outs. Vanuata’s Nalin Nipiko (4-30) was the pick of their bowlers as Norway were restricted to 184 from their 50 overs.

It was not enough as Rasu produced an attacking innings with five fours and five sixes in his knock of 95, which included two maximums straight down the ground in consecutive balls. Norway bowler Jawad Mir (4-17) carried their fight but could not prevent a four-wicket defeat.

Rasu said: “I am glad to get my 95 to set up the game but I am disappointed not to make a century after how close I was, and I would have liked to have seen out the rest of the game.
“I don’t think we need to see the games out quicker but we do need to keep our net run rate up to win the group.”

Matt Stokes’ unbeaten knock of 135 helped Guernsey make it two wins from their first two games. Guernsey elected to bat against Botswana and it proved a good decision as opener Stokes set about laying the foundations for a 151-run win at Frinton-on-Sea. Stokes was aided by great support from Tim Ravenscroft, who hit 58 off 37 deliveries, and Ben Ferbrache, who smashed an unbeaten 68 off just 27, to give their side an intimidating 313 total.

And the Botswana reply never really got going, with Oliver Newey (3-19) taking three early wickets and Tom Nightingale (3-34) also doing the damage as Botswana were all out for 162.

Suriname sneaked past Fiji with two balls to spare for their second win in as many games at Castle Park, Colchester. After Fiji skipper Josefa Rika’s early dismissal, Jikoi Kida Vanualeva (89) and Giles Smith (24) settled in to bring up the team 50 in the 15th over. But disaster struck as Suriname’s Muneshwar Patandin finished with an outstanding 5-33 in nine overs of work to leave Fiji all out for 205 in 48.4 overs.

Wasim Haslim (53) was the star in the middle of the Surinamese innings then Gavin Singh, the player of the match for the second day running, took the match to the final over, with Suriname needing three runs to win. And despite losing Singh for 53, Suriname were able to scrape over the line with two balls to spare for a six-wicket win.

Suriname captain Mohindra Boodram said: “We were pleased with the bowling performance. “We thought it would have been easier, batting second, to get 206, but they bowled well and credit to them. At the end we came out on top. It was a good game for us.”

Meanwhile, the ICC has confirmed that Saudi Arabia will not take part in the tournament after it was unable to secure visas in time. As such, the Event Technical Committee has decided that all Saudi Arabia’s matches in the tournament will be cancelled. The remaining Group B teams – Cayman Islands, Vanuatu and Norway – will play their remaining matches as scheduled, with the results of these matches to determine group rankings for the purposes of qualification to the second round.

DIAMOND RACE UPDATE AHEAD OF THE SECOND 2015 FINAL IN BRUSSELS – IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE

The 2015 IAAF Diamond League is about to reach its climax, with 13 of the 14 meetings having taken place.

Last Thursday, Zurich staged the first of two finals and there was the coronation of 16 Diamond Race champions. On Friday night (11), the remaining 16 will take their place on the podium in Brussels.

Dominant Diamond Race leaders

Friday‘s Diamond Race action will kick off with the women’s discus.

With five victories and a 15-point lead, Sandra Perkovic has been dominant in this year’s competition. She needs only to compete in Brussels to claim a fourth consecutive Diamond Trophy.

The same is essentially true of Sifan Hassan in the women’s 1500m and Caterine Ibargüen in the women’s triple jump.

Both women hold leads of eight points or more and participation alone is required for them to win the Diamond Race in their respective disciplines.

IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE

Nail-biting duels

In the men’s shot put, David Storl and Joe Kovacs are equal on 14 points and have three victories each.

Whoever finishes ahead of the other in Brussels will take the Diamond Trophy and the US $40,000 winner-takes-all cheque, a duel made all the juicier by the fact that Kovacs relieved Storl of his world title in Beijing barely two weeks ago.

Renaud Lavillenie is looking for port-Beijing redemption.

The only athlete to have won the Diamond Race in every year since it was inaugurated in 2010, Lavillenie needs only to win in Brussels to secure a sixth Diamond Trophy.

However, the French world record holder and 2012 Olympic champion only holds a three-point lead over Greece’s Konstantinos Filippidis.

Perhaps the most brilliant double act of the season in any discipline has come in the men’s triple jump.

Christian Taylor and Pedro Pablo Pichardo have delivered a wonderful, season-long battle fro supremacy during 2015. It was Taylor who claimed the major prize when they faced each other in Beijing, but Pichardo still has a two-point lead in the Diamond Race.

In the women’s 200m, meanwhile, one of the heroines of Beijing will be out to rekindle the old fire in the Diamond Race.

Allyson Felix hasn’t had her hands on a Diamond Trophy since she claimed two of them in 2010 but the 400m world champion could change that on Friday.

She leads the women’s 200m Diamond Race, but only by a single point, with Jeneba Tarmoh hot on her heels and 200m world champion Dafne Schippers is also in reach.

Nowhere are the margins closer, however, than in the women’s 100m hurdles.

After six rounds of Diamond League competition, three athletes have shared the spoils exactly among themselves. Jasmin Stowers, Dawn Harper-Nelson and Sharika Nelvis all have two victories and ten points under their belt.

The Diamond Trophy will simply go to whichever of them crosses the line first in Brussels.

Six is the magic number

In six of the Diamond Race events to grace Brussels this year, the winner is close to taking the crown. Bershawn Jackson is five points ahead in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Justin Gatlin, Ruth Beitia, Virginia Nyambura, Francena McCorory, Nijel Amos and Vítezslav Veselý all hold leads of six points.

Amos looks highly likely to claim his second consecutive Diamond Trophy in the men’s 800m, having missed out on the chance to claim gold in Beijing. His six-point lead could be enough, particularly in the absence of David Rudisha.

Beitia’s consistence over the season has been outstanding and, despite a thoroughly competitive field, few would doubt that she could rise to the occasion in the high jump and claim Diamond Race glory.

Likewise, Gatlin, McCorory, Nyambura and Vesely, all of whom have the quality to claim the minimum requirement of a third place in the Belgian capital and transform their six point lead into a Diamond Trophy in the sixth year of the IAAF Diamond League.

Final flourish

The final Diamond Race event of the evening will be arguably the most gripping.

In the men’s 5000m, there has been a different winner in each of the six rounds so far, and five of them – Ben True, Thomas Longosiwa, Caleb Ndiku, Yomif Kejelcha, Hagos Gebrhiwet – will be present in Brussels.

With none of them having reached eight points, however, it is not just these five who can claim the Diamond Trophy.

In theory, any of the athletes on the startlist could win the Diamond Race in Brussels, even those who are currently without any points.

It is by far the most open Diamond Race of the season.

As a final flourish, with some of the most even Diamond Races, some potentially epic duels, and some of the most dominant athletes, the 2015 season finale should be a night of the superlatives in Brussels.

No Deal, As Mercedes Refuse To Sell Engines To Red Bull

Regardless of a deal with Renault that does not end until the end of the 2016 F1 Championship, Red Bull has had their request for a supply of Engines turned down Mercedes.

The German Company has had a very successful Season so far with both of their drivers sitting at the top of the drivers championship and also topping the contractors chart.

Mercedes also won both the drivers and constructors championship last season. This recent surge in the fortunes of Mercedes might have informed Red Bull’s approach but as things stand now they would definitely have to look elsewhere as Mercedes continues its domination of Formula1.

Wang & Zhang are the ITTF-North American Champions

USA’S Timothy WANG and Lily ZHANG have claimed the respective Men’s & Women’s Singles gold at the 2015 ITTF-North America Championships that concluded today, 7 September 2015 in Westchester, New York.

Top seeded in the tournament, WANG had a taste of sweet revenge against Canada’s Pierre-Luc THERIAULT, prevailing 4-1 (11-7, 12-10, 3-11, 11-9, 11-6) to win his first ITTF-North American title.

After his victory, the 24 year old shared: “I lost to Pierre-Luc at the Pan American Games earlier this year, so I wanted to get my revenge, and luckily I pulled through.”

“I finished second for a couple of times at the ITTF-North America Championships, so it felt really good to finally win it. I was telling myself to stay aggressive and bring in my game, because if I play passive, it’s not going to take me anywhere. I played a lot better than expected today, my backhand was on fire,” added the newly crowned champion.

The Women’s Singles gold medal match was an reenact of the 2015 ITTF-North America Cup final showdown between archrivals ZHANG Mo (CAN) and Youth Olympics Bronze medalist Lily ZHANG (USA). The table was turned this time round is New York, as Lily ZHANG remarkably came back from 0-3 down to win a dramatic final 4-3 (8-11, 5-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-4, 11-8).

After her match, a thrilled Lily ZHANG shared “This is just the second time I have beaten her, and this is definitely one of the most exciting and nerve wrecking matches in my life.”

The Canadian team put up a good fight against Team USA in the Men’s & Women’s Team events, but the Americans proved to be just too strong. In a bitterly fought Men’s Team Final that lasted over 3.5 hours, Team USA was able to stage a huge comeback from 0-2 down to win the Team title 3-2.
