At 32 years, Ugandan Vision Volleyball Camp’s (VVC) Josephine Nammanda is contemplating retirement from the sport. Actually 2015 could be her last season on the big stage.

Yet, her performance at the just-concluded Women’s African Club Championship in Cairo, Egypt is one that makes many believe she still has a lot to offer. Nammanda (56 points), Peace Busingye (66 points) and Zaina Kagoya (52 points) were the best performers in the six games VVC played on their way to finishing seventh out of 13 teams in the Cairo event.

That is the best ever position by any Ugandan club at the women and men’s championships combined. “After losing the first set against Injis below 15 points, we realised that our Ugandan version of volleyball wouldn’t take us anywhere,” Coach Hannington Nsubuga said. “And we needed to step up as a team, that’s when Jose (Nammanda) Zaina, and Peace decided to lead to by example,” he added. Nammanda top scored for VVC with 16 points with Busingye (13), Nabbuto (10) and Vivian Adeke (10) all managing double figures as they recovered from the first set setback to defeat Injis 3-1 (13-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-15) in their opening fixture.

Nammanda top scored with 14 points, four of those off the block, as she inspired VVC to a 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11) win over ARSU of Seychelles to make the last eight.

Nammanda’s nine points weren’t enough to see VVC past Al Shams in the quarterfinals but Busingye led in that encounter with nine as they lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-10).

VVC defeated Cameroonian outfit FAP 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24) to finish seventh overall with Nammanda managing 11 points, Nabbuto 13 and Busingye 16 as Kagoya led with 18 points.
