Golden Eaglets Qualify For Chile U17 World Cup

The U-17 National Team, Golden Eaglets became the first African country to qualify for this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup after a 3-1 defeat of Zambia in Niamey on Saturday.

The world champions came into the match as pool leaders, with same four points as Guinea but better goals advantage, and Zambia with three and the possibility of turning the table in Group A. But the Nigerians left no room for doubt as they took full control and led 2-0 at half time, courtesy goals by Victor Osimhen and Captain Kelechi Nwakali.

The irrepressible Osimhen made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half, but Zambia pulled one back in the 62nd minute through Patson Daka. Yet, the bridge was too far for them and they head back to Lusaka on Sunday.

The Eaglets are joined in the semi finals by Guinea.

In Wednesday’s semi finals, the world champions will square up with the second –placed team in Group B while Guinea are up against the top team in Group B.

Group B’s final matches come up on Sunday, with South Africa to play Cameroon and Mali taking the pitch against Cote d’Ivoire.
