Thirty Byte CII Boys Line Up For Youth Olympic Games Challenge

A fleet of 30 Boys Byte CII’s will line up to race on Monday 18 August when sailing commences at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

Based on Lake Jinniu in Nanjing 30 boys, aged 15-16, from 30 nations will fly their flag on the Chinese inland waters as they bid to take the honours at the second Youth Olympic Sailing Competition.

Following a continental qualification system the fleet features a diverse mix of young talented sailors.

From Algeria, to the Cook Islands, Indonesia and USA the varied mix of nations is unique and across the four Youth Olympic Games fleets, Boys and Girls Byte CII/Techno 293, there are a total of 62 nations competing from 101 possible spots.

The Boys Byte CII fleet is expected to throw out some exceptional competition but the main question on everyone’s lips is “Who can beat Hungary’s Jonatan Vadnai?”

The Hungarian sailor has been head and shoulders above the pack, literally in many cases, and has 2013 and 2014 Byte CII World titles to his name.

At the 2013 Worlds, the first Youth Olympic qualification regatta, the Hungarian took the title convincingly, finishing 19 points ahead of fellow YOG sailor Henry Marshall. A year later he took the title again, sealing the deal with two races remaining.

Despite his dominance the Hungarian remains coy about his chances, “At the World Championships it was strong wind and in Nanjing I think it’s going to be light and if it’s light wind it will be harder for me and not that easy.”

Vadnai has had a busy summer leading up to YOG having competed at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in Tavira, Portugal where he finished seventh, and the Laser Radial Youth Worlds where he finished fifth.

With a packed summer of sailing Vadnai feels prepared for China, “Now I’m going to bigger regattas like the ISAF Youth Worlds and I’m getting better at tactics so it doesn’t matter what boat I compete in. The Byte is a tricky boat, it’s very small and very unstable but I like it very much.”

America’s Marshall was absent from the 2014 Worlds but pushed the Hungarian in 2013 and they resume their fight in Nanjing. 2013 bronze medallist Pavle Zivanovic (CRO) will also join the pair on the start line as will 2014 podium finishers Scipio Houtman (NED) and Arvid Nordquist (SWE).

The road to Nanjing 2014 began in August 2013 with the Worlds acting as the first qualification regatta. Continental Championships in Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania followed ensuring a strong blend on nations.

Paul de Souza (BAH) set out on mission to qualify for YOG and after falling short at the 2013 Worlds he took to the North Americans where he faced some nervy times, “I worked really hard to try and qualify for the Youth Olympic Games. I went to two different regattas and didn’t quite make it the first time. The second time I managed to qualify in the third spot and I’m pretty proud of myself, I didn’t expect to qualify because a lot of the kids I was sailing against I’d never beaten before. I was quite glad to see that I made it.”

The 101 sailors will stay in the Athletes’ Village and get a first-hand experience of the Olympic Games and de Souza is looking forward to the whole package, “I will just be really proud to be representing my country and to see my other competitors are there sailing and to see other competitors from my country in other sports. I will be glad to be up there with them at the opening ceremony.”

Chile’s Clemente Seguel was able to qualify his nation at the South American Championship alongside Brazil’s Pedro Correa and Peru’s Angelo Giuria. The Chilean had an exciting start to YOG when the whole team met Chilean President Michelle Bachelet for the official farewell. With the formalities done Seguel is ready and up for the challenge, “I have been training in the gym everyday from Monday to Friday and sailing at the weekends.

“You have to race with the wind you have. If there is light winds then that’s something I am not worried about although I do prefer stronger winds. I know that in China we will have light winds so we need to get used to this and mentally prepare and start training for those conditions.”

Olympic spirit and Olympic values will be key focal points for the young sailors and Seguel will use the event as a springboard, “Competing with the best sailors in the world in the Youth Olympic Games is a motivation to get to the Olympic Games in the future. I am very happy and excited because this high level championship is really important for your sailing curriculum vitae and experience.”

The Opening Ceremony on Saturday 16 August will officially kick off the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. The sailing competition begins on 18 August at 11:00 local time and will conclude on 23 August.

World Volleyball Championship Organisers Look Ahead With Confidence

A press conference was held at the National Stadium in Warsaw on Monday to present the state of preparations for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014, which will take place from August 30 to September 21.

The Polish Volleyball Federation was represented by its President Miroslaw Przedpelski and Vice-President Artur Popko. Polsat TV Sports Director Marian Kmita and Lukasz Sekula – board member of PL2012+, which manages the National Stadium, were also present on the organisers’ side. They were joined by Deputy Director of the Professional Sports Department Pawel Slominski, who spoke for the Polish Ministry of Sport and Tourism.

Polish Volleyball Federation Mirosław Przedpełski welcomed the press to the National Stadium, which will also host the Opening Ceremony and Match of the Men’s World Championship. Speaking about preparations for the tournament.

Mr Przedpelski said: “Everything is going according to schedule and without any obstacles. Let me repeat what I often say – that Poland was chosen by the FIVB to organise this World Championship first and foremost because of its position as a centre of world volleyball. There is no other place like this. We have everything: the fans, the atmosphere and the organisation. We need to show the world that there is no better place to play volleyball than Poland.”

Mr Przedpelski added that: “Everybody in our federation is focusing on preparations for the tournament. The Opening Ceremony is a great challenge but its organisation is well under control. This World Championship is a unique chance to boost volleyball’s popularity all around the world. New technologies will be introduced at this tournament and I’m sure that Polsat TV will do a great job in covering it all. I’m very glad that the whole world will see this.”

Polish Volleyball Federation Vice-President Artur Popko said: “First of all, I’d like to assure you that our preparations are drawing to an end. We are thinking of the Opening Match at the National Stadium and working on it as a separate event. Over three thousand people will be working at the stadium during the Opening Ceremony. The most difficult and nervous moment was the opening of ticket sales but our fans didn’t let us down and the tickets for the National Stadium disappeared in 100 minutes. Tickets for the other arenas are also selling well. The teams will be playing in a total of seven venues. The competition branding has been set up at the host cities and an one can feel an atmosphere of expectation at the venues. The branding of the venues is part of a new initiative by the FIVB. It‘s very attractive and well suited for such a prestigious event – not to mention that it matches our national colours well.”

Mr Popko also commented on the competition’s legacy: “What remains after the World Championship is also important for us. All kinds of activities and events promoting volleyball among children and youth have been going on in the host cities and those will surely be continued. Thanks to the Ministry of Sport we will also have the Mini World Championship. The Trophy Tour made it possible for the fans to see the new trophy with their own eyes – something that has never been done before. The Polish Volleyball Federation is ready for the World Championship. All formalities are either already completed or being finalized right now.”

Pawel Slominski, who spoke on behalf of the Polish Ministry of Sport and Tourism, said: “This is the second event of such scale and importance in the history of Polish sport. The Ministry of Sport supports volleyball in Poland. We subsidise the training of the national teams – not only seniors but also other age groups and beach volleyball – and let’s not forget the volleyball schools. In 2014, the Ministry donated PLN 31.5 million to the PVF – the highest subsidy among sports federations in Poland. I’m saying this with a sense of satisfaction, because cooperation with the Polish Volleyball Federation has been perfect. The schooling system created by the PVF seems ideal. We have also subsidised the renovation of competition halls, like Bydgoszcz’s Luczniczka. Financial support for the organisation of the World Championship in Poland has also been given by the Ministry. And as a fan, I’m counting on our national team to get a hold of a medal.”

Lukasz Sekula described Polsat TV’s role in the competition: “In 25 days, more than 62 thousand spectators will have a chance to take part in the Opening Match of the World Championship. The National Stadium is proud to host the biggest sports event in this country – two years after Euro 2012. For us it is most important to provide the highest quality in organising the event and we are cooperating with the PVF to achieve this.”

Polsat TV Sports Director Marian Kmita commented that: “This is the biggest TV production in the sports history of Polsat TV. It’s our pride. For 15 years, we did what we could to make volleyball a part of our everyday life. We invested not only money but also a lot of heart. Surely, this event would not be held in Poland without Polsat TV.”

The demand for the World Championship from fans has surpassed initial estimations and half a million tickets have been sold. The TV coverage of the opening match will involve three production trucks, 30 cameras (including Spidercam and Super Slow Mo cameras) and 300 crew members. There will be daily news coverage of the competition on all Polsat TV channels and four special PPV channels will make it possible to show all of the matches live, with all Polsat and Polkomtel clients getting these channels at no additional cost.

Mr Kmita concluded that: “We hope that this will lead to integration among fans and in the special Fan Zones. I hope that this event well leave us proud and with a medal. It will be a fantastic experience for everyone.”

The first international outing for GVBA will be the U-21 Zone II tournament which will be held in Dakar Senegal next weekend, the team will be traveling on Wednesday 13th August 2014 with thirty six member delegation.

The Auditor was quick to opine for more financial supports mainly from the central government and other institutions to support the team to successfully take part in this event.

“This tournament will act as a warm-up match before the African women championships to be held in Algeria from the September 5 to 15, 2014 for the categories of U18 and U23 Women and the winner will represent Africa in the corresponding 2015 World Championships.”

In another development, Gambia Volleyball Association organised a three day seminar for referees and coaches as well as another on beach volleyball.

NNL WEEK 23: WIKKI TOURISTS, KWARA UTD, 3SC, GABROS, EYE PREMIER LEAGUE…

Expectedly, all the home teams won their matches as the Nigerian National League (NNL) season is gradually coming to a crucial stage where any margin of error will do damage to the teams’ ambitions to either gain promotion to the elite cadre or drop to the amateur rank.

With this scenario in mind, the table toppers in the two divisions of the NNL ensured that they maintain the status quo as Wikki Tourists of Bauchi despite dropping three points after a 0-1 loss to TEAP Football Club in Abuja still lead Division A with 41 points just a point above Kwara United which beat Jigawa Golden Stars 1-0 in Ilorin at the weekend.

In the same vein, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) walloped rivals Abia Comets 2-0 in Ibadan to perch pretty at the top of Division B with 40 points while second placed Gabros International garnered three points from the home match against Go-Round FC.

However, it will take a miracle for the Nigerian Prisons FC with 16 points out of the possible 69 points after 23 rounds of matches to escape relegation even as Unicem Rovers, Remo Stars and Prime FC of Oshogbo are in danger of being relegated to the lower division also at the end of the season.

ITTF Shortlisted For Beyond Sport Award For The 3rd Year In A Row

ITTF

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has been shortlisted for the prestigious C” for the third year in a row for its successful Dream Building Program.

ITTF's award winning development program have put a lot of smiles on kids faces around the world
ITTF’s award winning development program have put a lot of smiles on kids faces around the world

ITTF’s Deputy CEO Glenn TEPPER stated: “ITTF Dream Building being shortlisted by the prestigious “Beyond Sport” awards is due recognition of what is in the ITTF DNA, CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility-using table tennis as a vehicle for social change.”

“ITTF’s long history of involvement with social projects has recently become more targeted and professionally presented through ITTF Dream Building, thanks to the combined efforts of the ITTF Singapore Office, ITTF Marketing and ITTF Development. This is sure to continue under ITTF’s new presidency with DTTB having actively supported ITTF’s Development Program since 2006”

The ITTF Dream Building Program is a marketing initiative by the ITTF Marketing Department to raise funds to invest into development, junior and para programs across the world. The inaugural ITTF Star Awards held in Dubai in January was one of the key events to raise funds for these vital programs.

All of the ITTF’s programs take the below aspects into consideration to ensure a lasting legacy:

* Systematic activities organized in the frame of a long term development plan which aims to spread table tennis globally, in better and sustainable conditions;

* Creativity to maximise the use of funds in educating our human resources as multi-skilled experts, leaving the maximum legacy on each visit to a country;

* Emphasis on the younger generations and less developed associations;

* Inclusion as a key word in any possible program, project or activity;

* Social responsibility high on the agenda by creating opportunities for those in need and minority groups; and Establishment of long term partnerships with global organizations, local Non-Governmental Organisations and National Associations, including UNOSDP, Peace and Sport and IPC to name a few.

Being shortlisted for the “Beyond Sport: Sport Federation or Governing Body of the Year” is yet another accolade for the efforts of the ITTF Development Programme; a whole host of awards have already been gained through innovative projects.

In 2013 the ITTF claimed the SportAccord Spirit of Sport Award. Before that, in 2009, the”best International Federation” was presented to the ITTF at the “Peace and Sport Award”; whilst on several occasions the ITTF has been short listed at the “FICTS Sport Movies and TV Awards” gaining a Mention D´Honneur in 2012.

In addition to these, in 2012 the ITTF Women’s Development Programme was awarded, and one year earlier the ITTF won the SportBusiness International “Making the difference” awards.

ITTF Development Director Leandro OLVECH added: “It is an honor for us to be shortlisted again for the Beyond Sport Awards, I am sure it helps the ITTF, sponsors and partners to get more exposure showing what can do sport for the positive social change. This should also encourage the National Associations to establish their own humanitarian projects which is our ultimate aim”
